Palin delivers a knockout

posted at 1:31 am on September 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Perhaps the media and Democrats would have been better advised to set expectations high for Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech tonight at the Republican convention.  After ridiculing her as a small-town yokel for the better part of three days, Palin would have looked good if she managed to avoid drooling during her speech.  In the event, though, they could have set expectations as high as a Barack Obama acceptance speech, and Palin would still have exceeded them in a tremendous debut on the national stage.

Palin made it clear to the condescending media and her Democratic critics that she is no pushover, no cream puff.  Her nickname, “Sarah Barracuda”, seems a lot more fitting after tonight.  Not only did she defend her small-town upbringing, she attacked Barack Obama on almost every possible front, and for good measure went after Joe Biden and the mainstream media as well.

For instance, she sought to underscore Obama’s hypocrisy in talking about his love for working-class families while belittling them behind their backs, and included Biden in that criticism:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown.

And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves.

I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except that you have actual responsibilities. I might add that in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.

We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

And on Obama’s lack of any real reform in his entire career:

We’ve all heard his dramatic speeches before devoted followers.

And there is much to like and admire about our opponent.

But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform – not even in the state senate.

Palin also took a shot at Obama’s rather grandiose view of himself:

But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed … when the roar of the crowd fades away … when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot – what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet?

She didn’t forget the media, either:

I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.

But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.

In the moments after the speech, I told our on-air listeners that this was the kind of speech Zell Miller could have delivered.  Palin didn’t deliver it in a shrill manner or sound like she had a chip on her shoulder, though.  She sounded like she relished the opportunity to engage.  Palin has no intention of allowing herself to get steamrolled by Barack “Sweetie” Obama, Democrats in general, or a mainstream media that suddenly found itself becoming the echo chamber for anonymous Kos diarists.

She didn’t just play the role of attack dog, although her description of hockey moms as pit bulls with lipstick played very well with the crowd.  Palin delivered a stirring defense of small-town values and middle America, and told Americans that she’s one of them — just a mother who started off wanting a better education for her kids, then wanted to improve her community, and just kept succeeding all the way up the ladder.

Palin also delivered for John McCain as well.  She gave this quote which will certainly resonate for weeks:

In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers.

And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.

They’re the ones whose names appear on laws and landmark reforms, not just on buttons and banners, or on self-designed presidential seals.

She extolled the virtues of McCain, calling him the real agent of change in Washington.  Palin talked about the remarkable story of an American hero who may just finish the final steps of a journey from from a cell at the Hanoi Hilton to the White House, and what that says about his honor and our country.  She evoked a stir of emotions when Palin noted that small towns across America have memorials to men just like John McCain, only he made it home — and that middle America understands McCain because of that.

Palin showed her mettle tonight.  Alaskans tell us that she is “tough as nails” and doesn’t run from a fight.  Tonight, she challenged Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and the media elite to a fight to the finish.  And she has bad news for them: she has no plans to quit.

Republicans should feel cheered and elated by this event tonight.  No matter what happens in this race, we have seen the future of the party, and it looks bright indeed.

Speaking of Hair Plugs, when are people going to start talking about his horrible health? That man can drop at any minute, yet CNN feels compelled to run a banner throughout the convention talking about John McCain’s cancer that has been nonexistent for years. Alas, like everything else CNN fails to mention that and focuses on how it was a serious and invasive form of cancer… as if it happened yesterday.

Funny considering Biden has had two brain anyerisms.

William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 2:53 AM

Eh, there seem to be a large number of middle-voters who have glommed on to Baracky and NOBODY knows a thing about where he stands on the big issues.

If middlers are technically capable of falling either way, then they can be snatched by either side. A few go with abortion, others go with low taxes, whatever.

What people have been looking for is someone to get them fired up again (IMHO) and while Baracky has slick oratory, there is no substance; Palin gives them both.

Bishop on September 4, 2008 at 2:53 AM

Keep in mind that no matter who wins in Nov, the Cheney era is over. National policy-making will no longer occur out of the VP’s office. It’s hard to see Palin or Biden doing more than the tired old routine that’s usually handed to the VP.

You’ll notice sarah didnt even mention her value voter positions at all tonight in her speech. It was her introduction and her policy beliefs that she spoke to tonight.

But now I see why you are belittling her experience. You dislike her conservative social beliefs. Funny last time I checked we are the conservative party. And McCain is at the top of the ticket not Sarah.

But of course that wont stop you from trashing her experience to cover for your feelings of distain for her beliefs.

It was that good. No, she’s not qualified, and the substance was thin, but my God — that was perhaps the greatest bit of political theatre I have ever witnessed. Her critics in the media and in the opposition may regret having piled on quite so enthusiastically, and with so little heed for who they hurt — or angered. Watching the tumultuous, ecstatic reaction in the hall, I was reminded of the famous words of the Admiral Yamamoto after Pearl Harbour: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant, and fill him with a terrible resolve.”

I think I’m more annoyed by the fact that Rudy went off the cuff of his speech, and lasted several minutes longer–forcing them to not show the video introducing Palin. Which in turn made Palin’s speech longer, and possibly had stations cut her off towards the end.

I’m not sure. expectations have been raised. I would love if the media continues to go after Gov. Palin as a country bumpkin until OCt 2. But she will do well enough. She has a month to get up to snuff on geopolitics, mccains positions on ecobnomic policy etc. Hell I was able to cram in a night for the final in college on polotical science 202 and got an A. I am sorry to say it, but you need to get out of you living room. How many cities/ towns have you lived in?

Again, I can say without hesitation that the bulk of small town America are the folks clinging to bibles and guns. Yeah, the big cities are mostly liberal and pro-life, but you are talking about a few dozen concentrations of 1-3 million people in comparison to the rest of the country.

Obama knows this fact, thus his massive effort to paint Republicans as elitist. Washington Republicans and CEOs are the template, but get out to the small towns and you will see something entirely different. Small town folks don’t care much for political parties or politicians in general, but they love their guns, churches, sports and blue collar work. And they vote in droves. There is no national politician who comes close to Palin’s potential appeal to these people.

Sarah Palin Delivers Smash Hit In St. Paul

The article seems to try to find every possible flaw, but it still recognizes her accomplishment.

Loxodonta on September 4, 2008 at 3:02 AM

Checkmate Obama, you’re numbers are only gonna go down from here. The left has once again been blinded by their own ego’s and thirst for power.

Phony and inauthentic people do not resonate with ordinary Americans. Celebrities live in a world of make believe. They spend their lives creating entertainment that is so far from reality and the way the world really is they can no longer determine truth from falsehood.

Well by the end of tomorrow night the rest of the nation will have seen the bull***t the media and other phony celebrities have been spewing for what it is. BS!

Under Senator McCain’s Leadership he has assembled a team that is going to win him the White House. I am so pleased at how they have articulated their positions unfiltered by the media.

The cat is out of the bag now. People are really gonna look at the mainstream media even more closer.

This should really cause barry to start plummeting in the polls.

We have an Alpha Male and Alpha Female running for President. Two people who are authentically masculine and feminine respectively.

I think America just fell in love tonight. They fell in love with Sara Palin and next Vice President and probably the first woman to ever become President.

What is so amazing about her to me is that she knows how to be a sexy woman, yet prove that girls can still be themselves and do great things. Can you imagine her talking to armennadinnjerk of Iran? She’d put that little pri** in his place.

If she wants to be the first woman President down the road, the job is hers to lose.

Great job Team McCain!

Michelle Obama made that comment in a political speech about her hubby. For them to declare it off limits now is really hypocritical.

William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 2:49 AM

Exactly!

But this is the campaign that with the press considers Obama’s 20 yr. relationship with a black separatist church, holding a fund raiser and working side by side with a weatherman terrorist, and Obama’s ties to lobbyist a “distraction.”

But Palin’s 17 yr. old engaged daughter’s pregnancy is front page news.

After this latest episode of media activism in trying to tear down a mother of five who is an elected official by pushing Kos/Huffington propaganda,I doubt McCain gives a sh!t what Obama or the media considers “off limits”.

Expect to see a lot more of Ayers/Wright/lobbyist ties coming from the McCain campaign until November.

Jim Treacher on September 4, 2008 at 3:13 AM

One other thing about the Ayers/Wright/lobbyist issues-

If anyone was wondering WHY Barry gave such a firm “back off” to the media; this was the reason. He’s benefitted from a shaky and illegitimate truce on these issues, coupled with the media worthlessness.

As much as an all out war on these topics is justified, legitimate and long overdue, McCain and the RNC have to be careful. Barry called for a pass for them and scored media praise for it (while they completely ignored his request). If McCain attacks these issues, we will think that Johnny Cochran rose from the dead with a race card army.

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 3:15 AM

I too, could swear she said, “I have always loved America.” Perhaps during teleprompter malfunction? And the few pages she carried to the podium had me salivating already. Hot damn, she’s gonna go for it. And she did! All the way. Played the liberal talking points like a virtuoso and supported McCain beautifully. Warms an old Conservative’s heart.

Caststeel on September 4, 2008 at 3:16 AM

In a single VP selection, it appears that McCain has started to re-make the Republican party’s agenda and direction in a way that’s more suitable to him. And the party faithful are teaming to jump on the shiny new Palin train.

foreverright on September 4, 2008 at 2:08 AM

Well, do you want to ride the “Palin train”, or let the Marxist Obama Express rule the rails? Whom do you suggest we vote for as an alternative?

I too have not been happy with the top-of-the-ticket candidates that the media helped to select foist upon us, but I’ll not sit idly by and watch the hammer and sickle easily replace our stars and stripes. Much blood has been shed to keep the flame of liberty and freedom burning bright and free; I’ll not let the putrid urine of marching Marxism extinguish it.

Complaining about McCain and “sitting this one out” will only hasten the orgasmic ascendancy of the leftists onto their throne of total unchecked power.

After 4 or 8 years of unfettered executive, legislative and judicial dominance (they will pack the court with activist judges and there will be no stopping any legislation that Obama proposes) by these power-hungry leftists, what do think will be left of our country? I don’t want to find out the hard way.

Sorry for the rant.

If you watch the speech, the teleprompter appears to screw up when she’s talking about Venezuela. She did have notes in front of her on the podium and she seemed to read them during the applause lines. She actually seemed better without the teleprompter. Bill Kristol said last Friday was the first time she ever used a teleprompter.

CanadianGuy on September 4, 2008 at 3:23 AM

Well, after being busy and not feeling well besides, while it was ‘live’ I got to see the recording of her speech on CSPAN’s website a few minutes ago.

Not the best political speech I ever heard, but certainly in the top ten… maybe top five.

She came off as both genuine and adroit…. and not at all insipid as those sort of speeches usually are, (for either dems or Reps.) If I hadn’t already liked her before, I for sure would now.

Too bad she has to run with McCain. Can you imagine the REAL “Straight Talk” you’d get out of a Thompson/Palin ticket if Fred¡ hadn’t wimped out before Super Tuesday??

As it is, if I didn’t know McCain as well as I do, she would have, tonight, convinced me to become an enthusiastic McCain supporter, and maybe even campaign volunteer.

The gal kicked butt. Barring something really bad coming to light in the next couple of months, I think she won the election for McCain and herself tonight.

If the RNC can just force John to shut up, and convince the GOP Congressional and Senatorial candidates to just ‘ride on her coat-tails’ the Republicans can win overwhelmingly in November.

Only the elitists on both sides and the completely brainwashed, kool-aid drinking liberal ‘commoners’ could fail to be inspired by, and perhaps infatuated with her.

Good rant. I agree, but even more so that you state.

The One’s fiscal policies will bring about a REAL recession within months. I give it a year before it turns to a full blown depression. Things are in a very shaky state and the market is not going to sit well with a bunch of liberal hooey. Especially raging unchecked with Reid and Pelosi.

Then you have his 3 day/ 3 opinion/ all wrong foreign policy and his genius “meet with everyone” nonsense. Foreign leader like him because they can’t wait to take advantage of this rube. He’s run overseas telling everyone how much better they are than us while they turn him on his head and shake our national security and economy out of his pockets.

I believe Dick Morris or an Indiana representative said today that the “Annenberg papers” are revealing a lot more information about the Ayers/Obama relationship than “we lived in the same neighborhood” bullsh!t that Obama said in the democratic debates.

Having Obama’s words played against the evidence of a much stronger and closer relationship with a terrorist is going to smack Mr. hopey changey even harder than the Rev. Wright
revelations(except we don’t have visuals).

This will be too much for the electorate to swallow except for the hard core left and Obama’s brainwashed flock.

McCain was really pissed off about the all out assault on

We don’t really get too many moments like that. Hopefully there will be many more, that she will prove worthy of the reaction she’s brought in a lot of us. I think she will be. I hope so because we definitely need it.

I don’t believe in looking to politicians for inspiration, it’s usually just manipulation anyway but I didn’t see her as a politician up there tonight, although she definitely is, and a very good one. But she did inspire me. And she reminded me of that George Thorogood song,

I hope you’re right, but so far, Morris is one of maybe 2 or 3 people seriously talking about the “Annenberg papers” and there is only a few more days where they are available.

If the media would actually do their jobs instead of getting their stories from Daily Kos, I would be more optimistic. Judging by this week so far, it’s seems that they’ve shipped all the reporters up to AK to try and dig up moose carcasses around the Governor’s mansion rather than send anyone to Chicago.

I understand the criticism about reading a speech written by others as s rung in the ladder for a newcomer to climb. But that girl was being herself and she will be more than able to grab the next rung.

I just saw something on Drudge that Biden and Obama will pursue criminal charges against Bush if elected. How do you think that turd is going to be flung back in the VP debates. This is going to be something to watch.

JAW on September 4, 2008 at 3:49 AM

Holy crap. Wow.

I was at work when the speech went live, but I’ve since watched it. Twice.

If Joe Biden isn’t right now curled up in the fetal position with a stiff drink in one hand and a dose of sedatives in the other- he should be. From what I read, I expected her to exceed the (low) expectations some had set for her- but not by this much. That kind of delivery wasn’t that of a half-term governor and former small town mayor, it was the speech of a seasoned pro who also happened to enjoy giving such speeches.

It’s not unfair to point out that it was just one prepared speech written by a speechwriter- we still have to see how she does in a more spontaneous setting, answering off the wall, detailed questions from the press. But from what I saw tonight, I can think of no single person in this country better suited to help the McCain campaign than this woman, Sarah Palin.

It’s still McCain vs Obama. Historically, running mates don’t have that great an impact on the election. However, I can not in my 38 years remember such a reaction to a VP candidate.

Hollowpoint on September 4, 2008 at 3:54 AM

I actually clapped out loud at one point during the speech. It was great.

And the chance shot of Piper (the Palin’s youngest daughter) cradling Trig (their newborn son) and then licking her free hand and giving the little tyke’s hair a spit polish? Ok, that was PRICELESS.

All families deserves privacy–famous or not–but I was very glad to have seen the Palin family tonight. Piper made me want a little girl and I can’t even take care of the milk in my refigerator!

Montana on September 4, 2008 at 3:54 AM

That’s the first speech by a politician I’ve sat completely through in more than a decade.

Will it be a bad thing if she continues to outshine McCain? I wonder how many conservatives who’re down on McCain will vote for Palin. It’s very reassuring that McCain picked her as the future of the party.

I can’t wait til Palin and Biden debate.

Well, they have been running against Bush non-stop for 8+ years, why stop now? Especially when they have no credible argument against the people who are actually running.

More lefty conspiracy theorist pandering. Go ahead. Don’t wait for the election. Trot your sorry never-been-in-a-court Harvard Law butt into a courthouse and file away. Then we can laugh hysterically while the judge throws the case out for lack of evidence.

If you wanted to file charges on Bush, you had 8 years to do it, Barry. Oh wait… I stand corrected. You have only been in Congress for 2+ years and have been running for President the whole time.

This is as bad as the House wasting time on “Executive Authority (aka no evidence for impeachment so we’ll just whine a lot) sessions while they dodged oil votes.

Obama has less experience than she does and he is going for the top of show job. I think they need to kinda pound that into the skulls of the undecideds.
McCain = massive amounts of experience and service to this country.
Obama = some new jack good at making campaign buttons and little else by way of experience.

I don’t agree with all of McCain’s positions but I at least respect him for his conviction which is something I can’t say for Obama or Biden.

Back OT: Palin knocked that speech outta the park. If there is ever going to be a woman POTUS, so far it’s looking like there could be a lot worse choices.

Cardiganfox on September 4, 2008 at 4:24 AM

If McCain attacks these issues, we will think that Johnny Cochran rose from the dead with a race card army.

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 3:15 AM

Actually, that I think that would absolutely seal it for McCain. Obama’s been trying to run as the “post-racial” candidate for one very important reason: white guilt is dying. Crying racism about every little thing is going to turn people off, especially in the political center and blue-collar America big time. Because the plain truth of it is, Americans are getting sick of being called “racist” if they even so much as criticize a black public figure or even more, getting hit with the “racist code” or “implied racism” BS that the left is clinging to.

People are just plain sick of being called racist just because the left has nothing else to counter criticism or argument with, and if the donks want to go there, they’ll pay a hefty price.

Mark my words.

If the Dems play the race card, come November, they’ll pay for it dearly at the polls, and not just at the top of the ticket, but in more than a few places, all the way down the ticket.

That’s why, unless the Dems and their media allies are complete morons, totally out of touch with reality, (although there seems to be mounting evidence that they are) they’ll stay away from playing that poison hand.

Oh boy. I don’t know what is going to happen next in the Sarah Palin story, but one thing is now for sure: John McCain has picked an Alaskan Margaret Thatcher to be his running mate.

She spoke for 36 pugnacious, stilleto-heeled, in your face, Barack Obama is a limp-wristed cover boy minutes. She blew the roof off. Sarah Palin has now shaken up a presidential race like no other nominee in modern times.

econavenger on September 4, 2008 at 4:35 AM

Headline on Yahoo: “Republicans defend Palin’s earmark history, say she’s changed.”

This is going to be brutal. The media is a huge advantage for Obama.

I won’t go that far, but I’m beginning to reconsider my plan to sit the election out, if it’s any consolation.

This from a cynical bastard who’s been known to joke about how giving women the right to drive and vote might have been a mistake.

We’ll see how it goes, but thus far I like Palin enough that I might vote for McCain just for the prospect of a future President Palin. This from one prepared speech written by a speechwriter delivered before a very friendly audience.

We can take the vote away from them, yet still have good women in office. The first woman in Congress, Jeanette Rankin of Montana, was elected in 1916. Montana did not allow women to vote in 1916. She wasn’t very good, but the point is made.

Gov. Palin was the point guard on her state championship winning basketball team.

So perhaps… A 3 pointer from half court +1 for the foul! What foul? That would be everbody on the opposing team, including their fans in the media, but excluding their star forward – yeah, the one over there checking his smile in the mirror – attempting to cut her off at the knees with every power tool they know how to operate.

OBTW: Nothing but net.

OK, it is only half time but it is still +4 points.

Unquiet on September 4, 2008 at 6:00 AM

Metaphorically speaking, Sarah ‘sticks the landing.’

She certainly got in her shots at Barry & Slow Joe but my favorite line was her telling the media elites she wasn’t coming to Washington to get their approval but to work for the American people.

Rest assured of the fact that Rush will spend a bunch of time on that line on Thursday’s show.

Let’s not forget that Fred also lacks executive experience.

eaglescout1998 on September 4, 2008 at 6:36 AM

Speaking of Hair Plugs, when are people going to start talking about his horrible health? That man can drop at any minute, yet CNN feels compelled to run a banner throughout the convention talking about John McCain’s cancer that has been nonexistent for years. Alas, like everything else CNN fails to mention that and focuses on how it was a serious and invasive form of cancer… as if it happened yesterday.

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 2:52 AM

Plus, McCain may have had cancer, but he’s licked it. Moreover, all indications he is watching his diet etc to make sure it stays gone.

Barack was a smoker, and there are rumours that he’s started again on the trial. He is trying to give himself cancer. Smoking is a form of suicide. Do we want a President that is secretly hoping for a the sweet release of death?

Waterboy on September 4, 2008 at 6:48 AM

On that prompter controversy…

I only watched one news feed (DNCTV, wanted to see if Olby and Mattys’ heads were still attached after that brutal smackdown) and the few times that they cut to an over the shoulder camera angle you could see the text of the speech in the propmter glass. It was scrolling and was in time with what she was saying. If it died mid speech, they never went back to that angle after that point.

It’s all beside the point, Sarah didn’t bring a knife to the gunfight, she brought a W-80.

SloJoe is asking Darth Cheney if he can rent out the Undisclosed Location for the next couple of months so he doesn’t make a complete ass out of himself when Sarah tears him a new one in the Veep debate.

Maybe Biden can convince God’s Chosen One, the Most Merciful Messiah, The Lord Barack Obama to debate Sarah’cuda instead.

It’s not like they (Obama, Biden, the Drive-Bys) haven’t spun up the meme that Sarah is running for the top of the ticket and not Maverick. It’s like the DNC and MSM are convinced that on Nov 5th, after OBambi has been dispatched underneath the foot of the Godzilla that they’ve unleashed, Maverick is going to fall over dead from the shock of finaly grasping the gold ring and Sarah does get to lead the country on day one (so far, it’s been she might have to run the country on day two) If they really want to play that game, then fine. Have McCain give his speech tonight then let slip the Lipstick Pit Bulls of war!

They’re going to rue the day that they awoke the sleeping giant.

ajrystad on September 4, 2008 at 6:57 AM

ROFLOL….Obama got beat by a girl…

still laughing…..how many speech writers does Obamam have on staff? anyone know. The MSM is trying to say the obama writes all his own speeches…now they are just grasping for something…anything…they are like a deer hit by a car trying to get to the woods before it dies….why I don’t know but that want it does…

unseen on September 4, 2008 at 7:03 AM

I watched the first few minutes of reaction on Fox News and then switched to MSNBC. I caught Chris Matthews right in the middle of a sentence where he appeared to be trying to praise Palin but seemed to have trouble forming a full sentence. Olbermann then started in on the “tone” of the speech.

Every time I switched back to MSNBC that’s what they were talking about. The harsh tone. At one point Olberman read the AP article from yesterday morning that was linked to here at Hot Air yet he gave the impression that it was written after the speech last night. He’s such a liar.

Greta had Susan Estrich on and that interview was amazing for how totally ass backward Estrich was. I think Greta was so nonpulsed she didn’t know what to say.

Over at CNN, Larry King was interviewing a bunch of stern looking Democrat women who apparently don’t have the first clue that jobs and taxes have anything to do with the economy because the theme of that interview was how out of touch McCain and Palin are because Palin’s speech “never once mentioned the economy”.

All three networks used the same “she can take a punch and she can throw a punch” tag.

Women like Palin can’t win. And it will be other women who are her harshest critics. Nothing she could have said or done last night would have satisfied any of them.

I think Sarah ought to sic Piper on all of them. That kid is a born politician.

Jaynie59 on September 4, 2008 at 7:06 AM

Yep. Might as well get used to President McCain and Vice president Palin. Sounds good. As long as there is no drama in the McCain camp, the race is OVER for Obambi.

seejanemom on September 4, 2008 at 7:16 AM

So, Obama and Biden want to pursue criminal charges against Bush? I thought they wanted to get rid of him, it seems to me they are doing everything they can to keep him around. And won’t most of America just love a long drawn out bitter partisan battle between Republicans and Democrats? Oh yeah, them, the American people. Throw them a bone promising free health care so that we can get back to doing what we do best.

I think that the very idea of something like that will hurt the Democrats. Bush is not as popular as he once was, but very few people want to see something like that.

Most people want to look forward to the future and I think that is what Sarah Palin hit on last night. A new day is dawning. Time for those bitter Democrats clinging to impeachment and war crimes trials to just move on.

Terrye on September 4, 2008 at 7:19 AM

I think I’m more annoyed by the fact that Rudy went off the cuff of his speech, and lasted several minutes longer–forcing them to not show the video introducing Palin. Which in turn made Palin’s speech longer, and possibly had stations cut her off towards the end.

Enoxo on September 4, 2008 at 2:56 AM

Rudy’s speech was great, and for all we know, there may have been technical difficulties with the film, and Rudy was told to speak a little longer to cover for it.

Biden is on Fox and Friends being interviewed about Palin’s speech. The smug look he usually wears is strangely missing at the moment. And now he is lying his ass off about the surge. He looks nervous.

Kevin71 on September 4, 2008 at 7:37 AM

I liked the speech, but was surprised it was so heavy-hitting against Obama, although I know that one of a veep’s main roles is to be the attack dog and I admittedly did not pay much attention to Biden’s speech for comparison.

But I am glad she said what she did. Those things needed to be said, they certainly weren’t going to be said by McCain who will most likely stick to the high road tonight. The governor has guts, and I hope she takes as good as she can give.

Laserjock on September 4, 2008 at 7:39 AM

After ridiculing her as a small-town yokel for the better part of three days, Palin would have looked good if she managed to avoid drooling during her speech.

Oops, I didn’t manage the avoid part.

Good speech, a bit unpolished delivery, which is to be expected from a rookie on the national stage. And that is to her advantage, it makes The Obamassiah look a bit too much like an actor, rather than a doer.
