Palin delivers a knockout

Perhaps the media and Democrats would have been better advised to set expectations high for Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech tonight at the Republican convention.  After ridiculing her as a small-town yokel for the better part of three days, Palin would have looked good if she managed to avoid drooling during her speech.  In the event, though, they could have set expectations as high as a Barack Obama acceptance speech, and Palin would still have exceeded them in a tremendous debut on the national stage.

Palin made it clear to the condescending media and her Democratic critics that she is no pushover, no cream puff.  Her nickname, “Sarah Barracuda”, seems a lot more fitting after tonight.  Not only did she defend her small-town upbringing, she attacked Barack Obama on almost every possible front, and for good measure went after Joe Biden and the mainstream media as well.

For instance, she sought to underscore Obama’s hypocrisy in talking about his love for working-class families while belittling them behind their backs, and included Biden in that criticism:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown.

And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves.

I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except that you have actual responsibilities. I might add that in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.

We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

And on Obama’s lack of any real reform in his entire career:

We’ve all heard his dramatic speeches before devoted followers.

And there is much to like and admire about our opponent.

But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform – not even in the state senate.

Palin also took a shot at Obama’s rather grandiose view of himself:

But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed … when the roar of the crowd fades away … when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot – what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet?

She didn’t forget the media, either:

I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.

But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.

In the moments after the speech, I told our on-air listeners that this was the kind of speech Zell Miller could have delivered.  Palin didn’t deliver it in a shrill manner or sound like she had a chip on her shoulder, though.  She sounded like she relished the opportunity to engage.  Palin has no intention of allowing herself to get steamrolled by Barack “Sweetie” Obama, Democrats in general, or a mainstream media that suddenly found itself becoming the echo chamber for anonymous Kos diarists.

She didn’t just play the role of attack dog, although her description of hockey moms as pit bulls with lipstick played very well with the crowd.  Palin delivered a stirring defense of small-town values and middle America, and told Americans that she’s one of them — just a mother who started off wanting a better education for her kids, then wanted to improve her community, and just kept succeeding all the way up the ladder.

Palin also delivered for John McCain as well.  She gave this quote which will certainly resonate for weeks:

In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers.

And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.

They’re the ones whose names appear on laws and landmark reforms, not just on buttons and banners, or on self-designed presidential seals.

She extolled the virtues of McCain, calling him the real agent of change in Washington.  Palin talked about the remarkable story of an American hero who may just finish the final steps of a journey from from a cell at the Hanoi Hilton to the White House, and what that says about his honor and our country.  She evoked a stir of emotions when Palin noted that small towns across America have memorials to men just like John McCain, only he made it home — and that middle America understands McCain because of that.

Palin showed her mettle tonight.  Alaskans tell us that she is “tough as nails” and doesn’t run from a fight.  Tonight, she challenged Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and the media elite to a fight to the finish.  And she has bad news for them: she has no plans to quit.

Republicans should feel cheered and elated by this event tonight.  No matter what happens in this race, we have seen the future of the party, and it looks bright indeed.

I give up, I’m not even going to try and point out that this woman isn’t very impressive compared to Fred or Romney. Yes, she gives a good speech, but so does Obama. So what?

In a single VP selection, it appears that McCain has started to re-make the Republican party’s agenda and direction in a way that’s more suitable to him. And the party faithful are teaming to jump on the shiny new Palin train.

foreverright on September 4, 2008 at 2:08 AM

Sarah’s speech went a loooooong way towards vindicating one of the most most important points Rudy made in his speech:

Obama picked the past, McCain picked the future.

Right now, that future’s looking pretty bright.

There’s still about two months to go and a lot can happen in that time, but I’m a lot more optimistic now than I was four hours ago.

“Change is not a destination and Hope is not a strategy.”

Money line of the night.

SuperCool on September 4, 2008 at 2:09 AM

Mocking Obama looks like the best way to undercut his cult of personality. And Palin did an amazing job of it without appearing vindictive or snide.

‘My fellow citizens, the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of “personal discovery.”‘

Best line, I think.

To say that her experience as a small town major is endearing is one thing- to say that I’d trust her more than Fred or Rudy to make major decisions is another matter.

I have absolutely no patience for the “she was over the top” crowd. The libs have been savaging Bush for 7 plus years. The left needs to grow a set. The truth hurts… and fits them like a glove.

Chicost84 on September 4, 2008 at 2:11 AM

A thought to ponder:
You know, I don’t believe she could have given that particular speech if she hadn’t been mercilessly attacked by the media and the Obama camp over the last few days.

Ronnie on September 4, 2008 at 2:12 AM

There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you … in places where winning means survival and defeat means death … and that man is John McCain.

So true!!

She also said, and correct me if I am wrong because I did not find it in the trans script:

“I have always loved my Country”

A direct shot at Michelle Obama.

Liberals have already outdone themselves by defending the racism and bigotry of the church that Obama attended for 20 yrs. and the separatist teachings of his “moral compass” and
“spiritual advisor” Rev. Wright.

They have defended his close relationship with an un-repentant terrorist Ayers.

They have defended Obama’s vote for NSA wiretapping, something that before they wanted to impeach the President over and claimed the Constitution was being ripped apart.

They have defended Obama’s backing out of a promise with McCain on election finance and watched him chase the money
and the lobbyist that go with it.

They have defended Obama on going from an immediate pullout of Iraq to Bush’s plan of it being based on conditions on the ground.

Now we are going to watch liberals further show the nation that they will do or say anything to push their political agenda by displaying their hatred for anyone that doesn’t share there political views by making sexist and bigoted attacks and spreading lies about a Women who is close to going further in government and leadership than any woman before her.

What ever Obama says, the sheep follow:

Is This What It Means To Be An Obama “Progressive?”

But a new breed of Democrat and “progressive” is emerging. Glenn’s Greenwald’s interview with Mort Halperin allows us to coin a new phrase – a Halperin “Progressive.” What is a “Halperin” progressive? One who decides what the right position is for progressives based on what Barack Obama does.

Palin is going to do what our activist media has been trying to hide from the world for years and that is expose the democratic party as the power hungry, hateful, bigoted idiots that they truly are.

Tonight, someone dropped a Barracuda into the gold fish tank that holds the Obama campaign and their followers in the media and she ate every last one of them up.

Great start tonight Mrs. Vice President, great start.

Baxter Greene on September 4, 2008 at 2:13 AM

I can’t put it any other way than this:

Friday morning, I came on this site, learned the news that it was Palin, and responded with disappointment. I asked the rest of you to “sell me” on Palin as the VP candidate.

Well. Consider me sold.

And, as cliche as it’s becoming to say, I also find myself in love with this woman. I’m serious when I say I haven’t felt this sort of compassion for a politician in….practically forever.

Clearly what the Majority Leader was driving at is that he can’t stand up to John McCain.

Fred wasn’t ever going to be VP because A) He added little to the ticket, B) He’s simply too old, and C) He probably didn’t want it.

Rudy is pro-choice, so he (sadly) would’ve been a guaranteed loss.

Romney is great on the economic aspect, but (also sadly) there’s a block of the country that’s suspicious of Mormons. Something like 17% said they wouldn’t vote for a Mormon simply because he/she’s a Mormon. He also wouldn’t have added much to the “new” aspect.

Thus BHO rapid rise on the change message the 70% that feel the country no longer represents them. It is time for a new team to be able to play. We have had the country club RINOs for 16 years. According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani’s speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.

Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.

Fred, Rudy, or Romney are far more qualified than this woman.

I vote none of the above… and not that is not Palinmania talking.

Romney has an exceptional resume and accomplishments. No argument there. But he also come with the (admittedly unfair)baggage of the Morman issue, his primary attacks on McCain, zero appeal outside of Conservatives, the RomneyCare disaster, he outspent everyone by at least 3-1 in the primaries and still did lousy.

Fred- single term senator turned lobbyist turned actor. I love Fred, but he is a terrible VP choice

Giuliani- I adore Rudy. I was a New Yorker when he was mayor and he is the best thing that ever happened to that city. 9/11 was the least of his accomplishments, but it made him shine. But, he’s a pathetic national campaigner and, if you think the mayor thing is bad with Palin, try running a guy that was ONLY a mayor (not that I agree, but that’s how it plays) He’s also got TONS of dirty laundry.

I stand by Palin. Yes, she comes with her own baggage, but it’s all tabloid BS. On the plus side, she put EVERY state in play other than CA, NY, NJ, CT and some of the other usual suspects. If there were more time in the campaign, I would predict a landslide. The trouble now is- can we work past the smears fast enough and get her known to people fast enough.

Given her record though, McCain/ Palin could be the best thing to happen to Washington in recent history. It will be ugly, but it could be the stuff of legend.

Yeah you’d think that either she was:

a) a better speaker

b) not playing from the disadvantage of having to hide her beliefs every hour of every day for electabilities’ sake

or

c) just more ballsy

admitting it could even be “a” will make Keef’s nuts retract so be gentle

I’m not bitter. Just wondering why the GOP suddenly has to start loving small state governors and present them as the standard bearers of the party.

Yeah- I’ll bet the Founding Fathers would really hate that-NOT.

Will add his wealth was a negative as well. After McCain flubbed the how-many-houses-did-he-own Question that killed Romney’s last change.

I like Mitt and wouldn’t have been disappointed with his choice. But tonight his speech was terrible and I wont miss him.

William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 2:42 AM

I would’ve fricken paid to have the same thing happen when Obama was speaking.
amerpundit on September 4, 2008 at 2:34 AM

Some staffer would have been thrown under the bus and the next day, right on time, CNN talking heads would be asking if it’s possible that GOP operatives had something to do with it.

You are wrong, however CNN nutcases were babbling about how her speech was an attack on Michelle Obama.

Must be more of those racist code words that David Gergen talks about.

I guess I’ll need to get a Racist to English decoder ring out again.

BTW- if you play Palin’s speech backwards, you can hear moose in their death throws.

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 2:20 AM

I just listened to it again, she did say it and I have no problem with it.
Michelle put herself in the political ring when she took the stage and could not hide her leftist idiocy.

They can yell racism,or “it’s about Michelle” all they want, but she hit Obama right between the eyes with a lot of Americans watching.
They are going to see that the press that is railing against her is so in the tank for Obama that it is sickening.
She did a he!! of a job and all the cut and paste propaganda dished up by the Obama operatives in the media to
cut it down will only lessen their credibility that much more.

The look on Mort’s face (Hume’s panal) was of total annihilation when he had to admit how good of a job she did
tonight.

I am guessing that a whole bunch of liberals felt this way themselves.

The media and Obama campaign can spurt their drival about
Obama’s supposed experience all they want, but Palin only reinforced what Obama said himself just a few years ago.

I’ll Say
So who said this this back in late 2005?

http://justoneminute.typepad.com/main/2008/07/ill-say.html

“I don’t think I have a place in history yet. I got elected to the U.S. Senate. I haven’t done anything yet.”

2008,and he hasn’t moved that bar up any further than it was then.

Obama,just a lightweight liberal puppet.

Why can’t they be? Good policy is good policy, small states just use it on a reduced scale for everything.

Besides, I don’t like the idea of confining ourselves to prospects from only a half dozen states; doesn’t exactly keep the pool well-stocked.

I don’t agree with it and think it’s the wrong direction, even if it has some merit in the current election. Unless you count illegal immigrants, voter growth is happening in cities.

foreverright on September 4, 2008 at 2:25 AM

I have been to 38 states in the union on business and pleasure. I grew up in NJ, lived and worked in NY (upstate and NYC), lived in SD, God Forsaken East TX, Dallas, Austin, Memphis and several other places in between.

I have seen it all and been part of every size community in the country. I can say with absolute fact that the big cities are the furthest thing from growth in the country, unless you are referring to negative growth.

Central TX (where I live now)is a fine example. TX has been the fastest growing economy in the country for the past several years. All markets, jobs, development, etc. are EXPLODING here. There is no housing issue in TX, especially in smaller towns and suburbs.

The same is true for most small towns. Many are developing at exponential rates. The only issue right now around the country is jobs. If we fix job growth in small towns, the economy will explode.

sven10077 on September 4, 2008 at 2:48 AM

How dare those small rural people get so uppidty

You missed my point, I was talking about winning national elections, not about rural vs. city values.

If there were more time in the campaign, I would predict a landslide. The trouble now is- can we work past the smears fast enough and get her known to people fast enough.

You’re being kind of naive- there are a lot of voters in the middle who will focus on issues like her stance on abortion and stem cell research. Its not simply a popularity contest. Anyway, it’s hard to say how much influence a VP candidate will have on a ticket.

Keep in mind that no matter who wins in Nov, the Cheney era is over. National policy-making will no longer occur out of the VP’s office. It’s hard to see Palin or Biden doing more than the tired old routine that’s usually handed to the VP.

Speaking of Hair Plugs, when are people going to start talking about his horrible health? That man can drop at any minute, yet CNN feels compelled to run a banner throughout the convention talking about John McCain’s cancer that has been nonexistent for years. Alas, like everything else CNN fails to mention that and focuses on how it was a serious and invasive form of cancer… as if it happened yesterday.

You’ll notice sarah didnt even mention her value voter positions at all tonight in her speech. It was her introduction and her policy beliefs that she spoke to tonight.

But now I see why you are belittling her experience. You dislike her conservative social beliefs. Funny last time I checked we are the conservative party. And McCain is at the top of the ticket not Sarah.

But of course that wont stop you from trashing her experience to cover for your feelings of distain for her beliefs.
