Palin delivers a knockout

Perhaps the media and Democrats would have been better advised to set expectations high for Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech tonight at the Republican convention.  After ridiculing her as a small-town yokel for the better part of three days, Palin would have looked good if she managed to avoid drooling during her speech.  In the event, though, they could have set expectations as high as a Barack Obama acceptance speech, and Palin would still have exceeded them in a tremendous debut on the national stage.

Palin made it clear to the condescending media and her Democratic critics that she is no pushover, no cream puff.  Her nickname, “Sarah Barracuda”, seems a lot more fitting after tonight.  Not only did she defend her small-town upbringing, she attacked Barack Obama on almost every possible front, and for good measure went after Joe Biden and the mainstream media as well.

For instance, she sought to underscore Obama’s hypocrisy in talking about his love for working-class families while belittling them behind their backs, and included Biden in that criticism:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown.

And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves.

I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except that you have actual responsibilities. I might add that in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.

We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

And on Obama’s lack of any real reform in his entire career:

We’ve all heard his dramatic speeches before devoted followers.

And there is much to like and admire about our opponent.

But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform – not even in the state senate.

Palin also took a shot at Obama’s rather grandiose view of himself:

But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed … when the roar of the crowd fades away … when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot – what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet?

She didn’t forget the media, either:

I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.

But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. Americans expect us to go to Washington for the right reasons, and not just to mingle with the right people.

In the moments after the speech, I told our on-air listeners that this was the kind of speech Zell Miller could have delivered.  Palin didn’t deliver it in a shrill manner or sound like she had a chip on her shoulder, though.  She sounded like she relished the opportunity to engage.  Palin has no intention of allowing herself to get steamrolled by Barack “Sweetie” Obama, Democrats in general, or a mainstream media that suddenly found itself becoming the echo chamber for anonymous Kos diarists.

She didn’t just play the role of attack dog, although her description of hockey moms as pit bulls with lipstick played very well with the crowd.  Palin delivered a stirring defense of small-town values and middle America, and told Americans that she’s one of them — just a mother who started off wanting a better education for her kids, then wanted to improve her community, and just kept succeeding all the way up the ladder.

Palin also delivered for John McCain as well.  She gave this quote which will certainly resonate for weeks:

In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers.

And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.

They’re the ones whose names appear on laws and landmark reforms, not just on buttons and banners, or on self-designed presidential seals.

She extolled the virtues of McCain, calling him the real agent of change in Washington.  Palin talked about the remarkable story of an American hero who may just finish the final steps of a journey from from a cell at the Hanoi Hilton to the White House, and what that says about his honor and our country.  She evoked a stir of emotions when Palin noted that small towns across America have memorials to men just like John McCain, only he made it home — and that middle America understands McCain because of that.

Palin showed her mettle tonight.  Alaskans tell us that she is “tough as nails” and doesn’t run from a fight.  Tonight, she challenged Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and the media elite to a fight to the finish.  And she has bad news for them: she has no plans to quit.

Republicans should feel cheered and elated by this event tonight.  No matter what happens in this race, we have seen the future of the party, and it looks bright indeed.

McCain will have to be in fighter pilot mode.

I heard several of the talking heads say that they wouldn’t have appeared so harsh had the McCain camp let them know she was on the short list. They would have had more time to “vet” her in the normal way. Obviously they don’t read HotAir, because she’s been on the short list here for at least a month and probably longer. One of these days these folks are going to figure out they are not the smartest people in the room.

Looks like Sarah is ready for a fight, and the libs have exposed their chin with all their condescension and sexism.

God Bless Sarah Palin.

MadisonConservative on September 4, 2008 at 1:36 AM

You too. There were a few, some very subtle, and delivered elegantly.

I wonder what’s going through Michelle Obama’s head tonight.

Entelechy on September 4, 2008 at 1:39 AM

One key point. Win or lose Sarah Palin is going to be force in National politics. Even if we tragically get stuck with Obama she will be back on the national stage in 4 years

OR we are finally seeing a stake driving into the heart of the Obamanation.

William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 1:40 AM

Wow. DNC, RNC, Berlin, Paris, London – SP would rock-the-house. I would pay money to see SP & BO “debate” in the mode of Lincoln – Douglas. And I know that BO has delivered when the buildup/ pressure was on. But he has never had to do so after an onslaught like SP has endured. I am at a loss to think of another recent example like this – where the person under-the-gun delivered like SP did tonight. And there may be an example of someone doing the same – but no one in the modern era has ever done it better. Historic, simply historic. She – um’ McCain – has my vote.

luckyz on September 4, 2008 at 1:40 AM

It was a fantastic speech, though I wonder if it wasn’t a bit too vitriolic in parts.

amkun on September 4, 2008 at 1:41 AM

A few days ago I was panicky about Palin and even thought she should withdraw from the ticket.

God, I can be such a douchebag.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

What we saw tonight was the birth of a political superstar. Palin’s national career just took off like a Saturn V rocket.

Win or lose this year, the GOP is back on track if it can produce and promote a person like Sarah Palin. God willing, she will be elected president someday.

Palin & the Teleprompter [Rich Lowry]

I’m told by a McCain aide that the teleprompter operator mistakenly rolled through the applause lines throughout the speech. So he rolled over the first two lines of the next paragraph after applause. But she was unfazed by it.

William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 1:44 AM

I am at a loss to think of another recent example like this – where the person under-the-gun delivered like SP did tonight.

George H. W. Bush’s “thousand points of light” acceptance speech in ‘88 (right on the heels of ferocious controversy over the selection of Dan Quayle as his running mate) was outstanding, and helped turn a 15-point Dukakis lead into a 10-point Dukakis loss.

People forget how good that speech was, and how much of a difference it made.

Not so sure that I agree. I’m far more impressed by Fred as the future of the party. Yes, Palin gives a good speech, although her executive experience is still far off from even that of Bill Clinton before his election to President (remember, the guy you liked to call Bubba based on his experience as a small state governor).

To say that her experience as a small town major is endearing is one thing- to say that I’d trust her more than Fred or Rudy to make major decisions is another matter.

bill30097 on September 4, 2008 at 1:36 AM

I thought of a better scene than that!

Aragorn: [to the corsair ships] You may go no further! You will not enter Gondor.
Captain: Who are you to deny us passage?
Aragorn: Legolas, fire a warning shot past the bosun’s ear.
Gimli: Mind your aim!
[Legolas aims; Gimli knocks the bow as he shoots and the arrow kills the bosun]
Gimli: Oh! That’s it, right! We warned you! Prepare to be boarded!
[the corsairs laugh]
Captain: Boarded! By you and whose army?
Aragorn: *This* army.
[the army of the dead charges through him and onto the ships]

Now, that’s the scene that applies to all this! :-)

I also feel that this has screwed up Obama’s strategy. It seems like what

The Congressional races are the ones with which we should concern ourselves, not this circus we call a “Presidential election.” But why would we do that? This is where all of the “excitement” and “drama” is taking place. Unbelievable.
My thoughts on how wonderful a McCain presidency will be are summed up nicely with this conversation from “Charlie Wilson’s War”:
Gust Avrakotos: There’s a little boy and on his 14th birthday he gets a horse… and everybody in the village says, “how wonderful. The boy got a horse.” And the Zen master says, “we’ll see.” Two years later, the boy falls off the horse, breaks his leg, and everyone in the village says, “how terrible.” And the Zen master says, “We’ll see.” Then, a war breaks out and all the young men have to go off and fight… except the boy can’t cause his legs all messed up. And everybody in the village says, “How wonderful.”
Charlie Wilson: Now the Zen master says, “We’ll see.”

The kossuckers are having a “Today, we are all community organizers” moment lol. but I do think she went overboard on that line of attack, it was too broad and may insult unintended targets.

Noneya on September 4, 2008 at 1:42 AM

This could get really interesting…I mean, what do these community organizers do that is so great? What do they accomplish? If you get all these amazing stories about people transforming neighborhoods, then yes, you would be right…but if all you end up seeing is a bunch of busybodies playing the victim card and filing lawsuits, I say tear em up!

So, we both win. Could this be the beginning of Camelot II in the White House? :-)

You will have to wait until 2012.

I don’t think there will be anyone foolish enough to run against her.

obama got beat up by a girl….remeber the nerd in grade school that ran home to his mother after the girl beat the crap out of him. Now we now what he grew up to be….Obama got beat up by a girl….you can’t make this stuff up…

First, no one thought of the Kennedy’s as ‘ordinary’ people, and that’s why a regal description such as Camelot came into vogue Second, McCain will live in the White House, but Palin is only VP and won’t be sharing his bed. In short, the answer is no.

Not so they will be at the Naval Observatory and I could see them hosting sled rides and such if it snowed….

I am a delegate to the Republican National Convention. Sarah Palin was so outstanding tonight that the word outstanding is not strong enough. The Republican Party won the 2008 Presidency tonight.

Phil Byler on September 4, 2008 at 2:02 AM

My favourite line was to the effect: “The presidency is not the starting off point of a journey of self discovery.”

Laughed like hell.
Very impressive tonight.

It is an urban think. since most big cities will vote for Obama anyhow. It doesn’t matter. It would be like losing the black vote. If 99% are going to vote against you anyway why try to make sure you never ofend them?

yeah. It’s great to watch a speech like this with a non-junkie. My friend, who’d only heard a little about her from me, but frankly is a helluva lot more interested in college football than politics, sat down and watched it with me and was pretty soon rooting for her very hard – really enjoying her gall, moxie, precision, smarts – blown away and, unprecedented in the annals of his political interests – wanting to catch the replays and post-speech analysis, too.

In short, he was impressed.

You know who Sarah’s speech doesnt help ????

Actually, I was being sarcastic. I was saying essentially the same thing as you:

BTW – this community organizer thing was really more Rudy than Sarah. If you look at the text of her speech, she mentioned community organizers twice, in the comparison to small town mayors passage, and just following the line about the presidency not just being a journey of personal discovery: “My fellow citizens, the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of ‘personal discovery.’ This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn’t just need an organizer.”

That was it.

Ha! They want to double down, do they? Free advise: That might be unwise.

Spirit of 1776 on September 4, 2008 at 2:07 AM

If I was the headline writer at the NY Post: “Sarah Victorious imPALINg Obama!”

Seriously, has there ever been a better smackdown like this of the phony Messiah? Even the text is worth another look.

This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word “victory” except when he’s talking about his own campaign. But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed… when the roar of the crowd fades away… when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot – what exactly is our opponent’s plan?

What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger… take more of your money… give you more orders from Washington… and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world. America needs more energy… our opponent is against producing it.

Victory in Iraq is finally in sight… he wants to forfeit.

Terrorist states are seeking new-clear weapons without delay… he wants to meet them without preconditions.

Al-Qaeda terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America… he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights? Government is too big… he wants to grow it.
