Clinton aides on the record calling attacks on Palin “sexist”

posted at 9:10 am on September 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe the PUMA movement has some life in it after all.  Following a three-day stretch in which the media attacked Sarah Palin for the quality of her motherhood, even Democrats have seen enough.  Politico notes that some have started pushing back against the media for its sexist approach to covering this woman in politics, including one top-ranking member of Hillary Clinton’s campaign team:

Sarah Palin found some unlikely allies Wednesday as leading academics and even former top aides to Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed the Republican charge that John McCain’s running mate has been subject to a sexist double standard by the news media and Democrats.

Georgetown University professor Deborah Tannen, who has written best-selling books on gender differences, said she agrees with complaints that Palin skeptics — including prominent voices in the news media — have crossed a line by speculating about whether the Alaska governor is neglecting her family in pursuit of national office.

“What we’re dealing with now, there’s nothing subtle about it,” said Tannen. “We’re dealing with the assumption that child-rearing is the job of women and not men. Is it sexist? Yes.”

“There’s no way those questions would be asked of a male candidate,” said Howard Wolfson a former top strategist for Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Wolfson was no mid-level flunky for Hillary.  He was one of the campaign’s most visible executives, spending plenty of time courting the media.  He got a perspective on the sexism that he saw, perhaps both real and imagined, and he sees a pattern repeating — and maybe even less covert than with Hillary.

Will this create a backlash?  The sexism of the media certainly helped stoke the fires that created the rift between Hillary supporters and the Obama campaign.  If a rerun does anything, it will remind these same voters of the Obama campaign’s silence in the face of these attacks.  And so far, although Obama warned people off from attacking the Palin children, they have said nothing about the audacity of questioning Palin’s mothering skills.

This sends a more subtle message, too.  Hillary’s aides certainly came to Palin’s defense rather quickly.  They could just as easily have waited to make this point on November 5th.  The media attacks certainly help Obama, at least in the short run, to define Palin as some sort of denizen of the double-wides.  If they put a stop to that by getting vocal in the early stages of this media mauling, does that signal Hillary supporters to continue rejecting Obama?

Perhaps, Ed. The important thing is that the key movers and shakers of the PUMAs – the ones who talk to the talking heads – manifest this displeasure vocally. That, in turn, will inflame the PUMAs, causing some of them to defect to the McCain camp.

As much of a backlash as the Lewinsky affair revamped sexual harassment law.

This is all about Hillary in 2012.

They look like they are behind McCain and Palin even more.

Wolfson was interviewed on Fox following Palin’s speech, and had very positive things to say about it’s effect, if not it’s content. But he was recently hired by Fox, so with a new hat I suppose he has a new tune.

Also, he is personna non grata with the MSM these days.

The media’s attack on Palin has been the greatest gift they could’ve given her….. non-stop PR 24/7, totally blocking out the Uh One in so doing.

The proof of this is how the same media’s tone has dramatically changed this morning.

Rudy hit it right, both in his speech and afterward talking to Andrea Mitchell. These questions would NEVER be asked of a man! I was SO glad he threw that in there at the end of his speech! With Mitchell, he also mentioned that Nancy Pelosi has five children and nobody ever asked if she were neglecting them as she rose to power. And in response to Mitchell’s spouting the Obama line that he got 18 million votes which shows that a lot of people think he is qualified, Rudy hit it out of the park (especially for the PUMAs if any of them were watching) – he said, so did Hillary, and she won all of the big Democratic states and she won almost all of the later primaries, while John McCain won nearly all of the GOP primaries and won them big. He said Obama has not unified the Democratic party while McCain has unified the GOP.

I hope Allah will get the video of Rudy’s interview and post it later.

Anyone in SE Michigan hear Jennifer Granholm’s husband, First Gentleman, Dan Mulhern, yesterday? I think Frank Beckmann expected Mulhern to show a bit of sympathy – well maybe not sympathy, but perhaps a bit of “kinship” with what the Palin family is dealing with.

Mulhern sounded as though he had regrets about his own wife’s career and didn’t think his own family/wife would be capable of handling a Vice Presidential nomination. It should be known that Granholm is not eligible for VP – she was born in Canada.

In any case, if I were Granholm, I’d be peeved at my husband for this phone call (apparently, Mulhern initiated the call into the radio station). I think he screwed up and put down his own wife and family in an attempt to jump on the “Palin’s incapable” bandwagon.

The moderates and independents who supported Hillary seem available for McCain/Palin to pick up. But those who are feverishly dedicated to Hillary being the first female President are now looking at a formidable future rival in Governor Palin. So, that group has a very difficult decision: which ticket is more likely to fail and set Hillary up for 2012? Nasty business, that, hoping for a failed presidency.

Loxodonta on September 4, 2008 at 9:47 AM

Greasy Joe Biden was also on Good Morning America – the happy, safe “home base” for Democrats – and he gave a folksy and very slick smackdown to those nasty, sexist partisans of the left who might want to question Sarah Palin’s choices in this campaign.

He said those critics have obviously never seen a strong woman before, like, for example, his own wife, who taught school full-time while raising their kids and studying for her PhD. He even threw out the old Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers thing – backwards, in high heels.

Pretty good recovery, I thought. This is the new strategy: applaud her wondrous womanness.

Obamamites have been claiming that the polls of registered voters are more important than the polls of likely voters this time, because Obama brings so much excitement to the race that he will attract a record number of new voters to the polls.

Dent the excitement, and this rush of new voters becomes little more than a chimera.

The so-called 4th Estate has an important role to play in our country–ergo the various shield laws that protect reporters in some ways from having to reveal confidential sources. If the media is not corrupted, they report/reveal/expose what our government is up to. How else would we know?

So Brown wants the traditional role respected. The problem is, of course, is that the media is corrupted, beyond repair, and doesn’t deserve the respect and role they were previously allowed. She won’t acknowledge that, but many have already voted on that issue by abandoning tv and newspapers.

Others have already, and rightly, pointed out that this election is Republicans vs. MSM. It will be stunningly beautiful to see them lose (Barack Obama’s fate doesn’t interest me at all.)

Noonan objected to the narrative but that was because she is accustomed to doing and seeing the narrative work. But Sarah Palin is the narrative. It is who she is.

I mention this because one aspect that has been little noticed is part of that narrative is the assertion that having an inconvenient pregnancy does not destine a women to a life unfulfilled. The asserted truth shouted from the roof tops for decades has been that becoming pregnant at any time other than the precise timing a woman decides, will leave the woman with career lost, plans put on hold, achievements postponed and prosperity forever denied.

This, of course, was partly true, but only so in the matter of society’s having been accustomed, for the most part, in traditional roles of women. Those radical feminists who wanted to change that tradition used their fight against it to assert that abortion of an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy was the only way to break off the traditional barriers and prevent the loss of the career, plans, achievements and prosperity. For whatever individual or collective reasons, they meant to implant this as a truth and largely succeeded.

Sarah Palin has shown it is not a truth. Abortion is not a necessity. Career, plans, achievements, and prosperity can still be had with children in tow and, though life will be different, it will still be grand. Hillary may be the most visible woman now to have added millions of cracks in the glass ceiling in society, but Sarah is going to put millions of cracks in the mirror society holds up for women now. She will change attitudes and possibly a great many votes this election.

Lenin taught that women should be working outside of the home if the Revolution was to be effective. That is a fact.

Wasn’t that part of his belief that the state is the parent? As for today’s reality, current tax policy (and the wants of most consumers) cannot abide a single-income household.

Campbell Brown of CNN wonders why the campaign did not let the media vet Palin before. Since when does the media vet candidates!! They are beside themselves–McCain threw them for a loop.

I know O’Reilly isn’t popular here, but he did a total takedown of Sally Quinn on the same subject last night. And he did ask why the media have not vetterd Barack Obama.

You know that Obama is suddenly running TV ads about abortion? Do you think they had planned to do that when this campaign started? They are scared sh!tless about Sarah Palin. For years, liberals have been able to scare women and convince them that pro-life politicians are either men who do not know what it is like to have an unplanned pregnancy, or women who were so wealthy or “kept” by their husbands that they could not understand either. Sarah Palin just completely screws their narrative.

rockmom on September 4, 2008 at 11:25 AM

maybe even less covert than with Hillary

Ah… well then. That’s like calling the Battlestar Galactica “less covert” than the USS Enterprise. Both were overt, but behavior with Palin has been more overt by two orders of magnitude.

There is no -ism, be it sexism or racism that is quite so breathless as that expressed by those who believe themselves to be incapable of it.

RocketmanBob on September 4, 2008 at 11:36 AM

My Bad Folks

I forgot they support Palin’s right to run without enduring sexist treatment…Even if they qualify it by asserting that her beliefs will spell the end of enlightened, multicultural, and diverse society…

Well if that’s the case, I CAN’T WAIT !

RocketmanBob on September 4, 2008 at 11:39 AM

I was thinking the same sort of thing. Hollywood would love (should love) this story – if only she was a liberal. Candy Slice on September 4, 2008 at 9:59 AM

Obama was supposed to be a “transformational” candidate. But he turned out to be conventional with transformational packaging. Palin is truly transformational. And she, like Reagan, is likely to change what “conservative” means in a significant way. Along with this change would be the possibility that people who could never have imagined themselves as conservatives before, will be able to see themselves as conservatives, once they’ve seen what the mantle of conservativism looks like, as worn by Sarah Palin. In ed school I learned this term “possible selves.” It is used in finding ways to show students the many different selves that they might become. Many don’t need this sort of thing, but some do. I would say the same is true in our society, where a benighted educational system, and stunted intellectual exchange (stunted by things like PC, and the relentless distortion of reality by the MSM), have left many people yellow dog Democrats, who by their natures ought to be conservative Republicans. When Sarah Palin shows them, by example—that being an evangelical Christian doesn’t mean you’ve checked your brains at the church door, that being a conservative doesn’t mean you hate gays, or blacks, or anyone else a priori for that matter, that being a Republican doesn’t mean you are rich fat cat—then some of those who thought they were yellow dog Democrats will be saying, “You mean THAT’S what it is to be a Republican? Hey, I can get to that. And

that

is transformational.

I am intrigued at how the media/ Dems keep pushing the “not properly vetted” line, even though this has been totally debunked. Sure. A professional, independent vetting organization of 25 people in Alaska for 3 months digging through everything by Palin’s underwear drawer, multiple interview as long as 3 hours, full financial, criminal and political background checks overdoes not count as vetting.

So what DOES count as vetting?

“She hasn’t even done Meet the Press or talked to MEEEE!!!”.

Gee… in 18 months of Obama gaining his vast executive experience to President the media and singularly avoided ANYTHING about his background. But since he’s been on Meet the Press, he’s fine.

Fox News just reported that Rahm Emmanuel stated that “Sarah Palin was “handed” her speech. and he congratulated Sarah Palin for successfully completing the task that John McCain handed to her.”
I am shocked…since women are so “cherished” by his religion.
