Biden: We’ll go after the Bush administration

posted at 11:10 am on September 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I’ve been getting a lot of e-mail about this clip of Joe Biden speaking at a campaign event yesterday in which he promised to go after the Bush administration for “violations of the Constitution”.   Readers believe this to be an outrage, and perhaps it is, but for another reason altogether than what they think:

Biden’s comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

But his statements represent the Democrats’ strongest vow so far this year to investigate alleged misdeeds committed during the Bush years.

“If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued,” Biden said during a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to ABC.

“[N]ot out of vengeance, not out of retribution,” he added, “out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no attorney general, no president — no one is above the law.”

Quite honestly, there’s nothing objectionable about this statement.  Who could object to holding elected officials accountable for crimes they commit in office?  In this case, Biden is completely correct — no one is above the law, and we need to make sure that we don’t set precedents that undermine that concept.

Note too that Biden says IfIf violations occurred, they plan to investigate them.  As long as they stick to that approach, that seems not just fair, but fundamental to good government.

However, the real story here is that Democrats have controlled Congress for almost two years now, and they have conducted investigations into these allegations.  What have they found?  Nothing.  The 110th Congress has abdicated all of its other responsibilities to focus on witch hunts, hoping to find a Holy Grail of Bush Derangement Syndrome.  Despite wasting thousands of hours and millions of dollars, they’ve come up with a big nothingburger.

The real outrage here is either that the Democrats are so deep into the tinfoil hat brigade, or that they are so incompetent.  Neither of those options speak well to keeping them in leadership roles.  That’s why Joe Biden answered the man’s question carefully, and in my mind, completely appropriately.  If Republicans want to become a party of real reform, they’d better get used to acting on it.

Yeah, but since you aren’t going to win, you will have to go over Bush in your little pretend government that lives beneath those plugs in your head.

This is just pandering to the far-left – they’re not gonna do anything about Bush because they don’t have the evidence. It’s the same thing Pelosi did in 2006.

lodge on September 4, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Thats what I got from the clip that Biden was pandering to his base.

The real story is that crazy uncle is off the reservation. If I was the McCain campaign I would ask if Obama is going to waste tax payer money on endless investigations.

The real outrage here is either that the Democrats are so deep into the tinfoil hat brigade, or that they are so incompetent.

Was that deliberate?

OneGyT on September 4, 2008 at 11:14 AM

The 9% approval rating will be a high point if they continue this witch hunt.
That is how Clinton got off, the right was to shrill.
But all bets are off of “just an investigation” when the names of Conyers and Waxman are involved.

Once they go down this road they’re open to investigations by later administrations. It’d be a good distraction to keep people’s minds off of Iran building nuclear weapons but eventually they’ll see through that. In the end it’s just pandering to the nutroots. Something for them to fap about.

The dems and other fringes have politicized the Constitution the last several years, is what this comes back to. They have people beleiving the War in Iraq was “unconsitutional”, which is non-sense and would never stand up but is politics. The Paultard has famously done this on the right as well, and on other issues like FISA, Patriot Act, Gitmo, etc.

bunch of Constitutional dunces, the “Constitution Party” is a bit of a joke

jp on September 4, 2008 at 11:17 AM

BTW Biden had to make the case that this wouldnt be done “Vindictively or with Malice”. But that is the exact reason it is even being brought up.

The attack angle on this is Biden earlier on the speech panders by telling them how they are going to put liberals on the Supreme Court and how he with all his knowledge about Supreme Court vetting process is going to march them through Congress.

He also earlier in the speech lashed out at Alito and Roberts saying they are “Nice guys’ But not “His kind of Justice”

William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 11:18 AM

I wonder if they’ll also look into the Clinton Administration while they’re wasting time and money?

TooTall on September 4, 2008 at 11:18 AM

The left firmly believe that they don’t have ‘real power’ now for a more thourough investigation.

Once they have control of both WH and Congress, they will have even more money and energy resource (men) to spend on these investigations.

Sir Napsalot on September 4, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Now lets just look at the (sic) Clinton administration and the transfer of technology to the Chicoms …..NOW that real criminalization of power by a president.

grapeknutz on September 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Doesn’t he mean that he and Obama will farm out the work to some staff flunky?

Because going after the Bush Administration would take, you know, actual work.

Something Smugs and Plugs ain’t much for. They’ll be happy to read speeches written about it for them or bloviate about it.

Just as long as there’s no actual work involved.

That’s how Smugs and Plugs roll, dude.

It’s true that criminal violations should be prosecuted, but has any other presidential campaign made it such an issue?

Biden is without a doubt one of the slimiest morons that have crossed our paths in decades. The jackass has the unique ability to stick one foot in his mouth and the other in his backside. Yeah, Obama, you really picked a winner here . . . although I must admit that he fits in quite nicely with the rest of your inept gaggle.

rplat on September 4, 2008 at 11:21 AM

BTW for the left this entire campaign season really has only one them. To Slam GW for his Presidency. That has been the driving force. And its still going on with the Obama campaign still leading the charge.

I said when Hillary had her best chance to beat Obama it was because she kepy hitting him. She let up after the obama camp whined about being punched. We HAVE to keep hitting obama and not to let up when they whine about it being “Unfair”

8 years of BDS and they want to whine about “Unfair” attacks ? They will not go quietly but they have to be counterattacked.

However, the real story here is that Democrats have controlled Congress for almost two years now, and they have conducted investigations into these allegations. What have they found? Nothing.

And in the meantime, they’ve managed to get nothing done and are thought to be doing their job by only 12% of Americans. Go for it, Joe.

Connie on September 4, 2008 at 11:22 AM

I strongly encourage folks to read Victor Davis Hanson’s piece.

“Why does the left and liberal media, in McCarthyite fashion, now seek to destroy rather than just oppose these public servants? “

moxie_neanderthal on September 4, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Well, if– God forbid– these guys get into office, as long as they choose to spend their time on the Bush administration– investigating, castigating, vituperating, litigating and reiterating– it’s unlikely that they’ll manage to get any of their idiotic policies implemented. In any case, it seems to have worked for Harry and Nancy…

morganfrost on September 4, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I disagree on one point ed. Biden is asked a direct question about “Will you investigate Bush”.

He gives an direct “YES” answer. That is a political promise on a national state. He made it part of the political debate.

BTW if I was the Bush Administration Id reall go all out to help McCain. Because if Obama does get the Presidency they will be under intense pressure from the left to “Set things right” Obami will have to investigate him just to get Kos and the other sewer rats to shut up. We still see it with Kucinich and the others they arent going to give up this dream of frogmarching Bush in front of a court.

Bigfoot on September 4, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Dude, Biden is playing to the base. They are circling the wagons now. Campaigning in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Throwing out red meat to the BDS crowd. Running TV ads about abortion.

This campaign is circling the drain now.

rockmom on September 4, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Liberal red meat…or arugula…or a chemical-free, hypoallergenic veggie platter.

It’s Biden’s lame attempt to say, “See, Obama really is a tough guy under that bland, dull, effete exterior”.

All Bush all the time for these fools, too bad for them everyone else is movin’ on with Palin.

Exactly. One of the biggest things wrong with government today is too many elected officials playing politics and way too few practicing statesmanship.

I have many differences with the Democrat Party on matters of policy. That is enough to keep me from giving them my vote. But what earns them my contempt is their manic obsession with portraying the Republican Party as Public Enemy #1.

This is the same thing Obamba said in June. It is straight from the daily Kos, Code Pink, and MoveOn talking points that they have adopted. They are seething with rage and want to wipe out and reverse anything the Bush Administration has done. They will not be satisfied until they see George Bush walked out in hand cuffs and turned over to the Hague. I have been disappointed by Bush on many things but, the facts are when Bush came to office we had consecutive quarters of negative growth which is a recession. Bush’s tax cuts turned that around and the economy even with the devastating attack on 9/11. And we have not been attacked since, which no one at the time would have believed. Al Qada is decimated with the leaders hiding in cave like the animals that they are. He made two very good appointments to the SCOTUS. He has left many things to be done but, the last thing we need with the problems we still face, is a congressional debacle and continued Bush derangement.

Obama and Biden have the inner-city community-organizer vote, elites on both coasts, and elites in college towns. They are going to get buried.

This morning the press is spinning a conspiracy about limited access to Palin. Give her a chance to catch her breath, bone up a bit, and she’ll clean people’s clocks. Let’s not forget how BAD Obama is with an open mic. She cannot possibly do any worse–and she’s the #2 person.

fivebeers2002 on September 4, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Or Rockefeller for discussing American war plans with Syria?
Or Kerry “accidentally” outing a undercover CIA operative?

At some point there is going to be one survivor between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

indythinker on September 4, 2008 at 12:24 PM

The real outrage here is either that the Democrats are so deep into the tinfoil hat brigade, or that they are so incompetent.
Was that deliberate?

OneGyT on September 4, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Shouldn’t it be battalion instead?

Rick on September 4, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Hey you demojerks. Get over it. Living your lives in the hopes of getting even for the Clinton impeachment is not getting you anywhere.

TimothyJ on September 4, 2008 at 12:27 PM

“[N]ot out of vengeance, not out of retribution

A pound of flesh for the flesh that Clinton got. It is desperation and useless pursuits. Jreasy Joe used the word if, like a lawyer, but his base is demanding for anything short of choking on a pretzel.

Plus, they’re campaigning against Bush and he’s not even on the ticket.

Kini on September 4, 2008 at 12:32 PM

This is just pandering to the far-left – they’re not gonna do anything about Bush because they don’t have the evidence. It’s the same thing Pelosi did in 2006.

lodge on September 4, 2008 at 11:13 AM

And the reason they have no evidence, is because there is no evidence to be had… because… for what they are trying to prove, Pres. Bush has done nothing illegal.

But let’s not get the facts get in the way of a good ‘ol character lynching.

NOTE TO BIDEN:

1. Bush is not running in this election!!!

2. Blind, rabid hate is neither constructive nor inspirational! Get treatment for your BDS!

Controlling his own campaign’s ads is “ABOVE BIDEN’S PAYGRADE”

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2008/09/04/nets-push-biden-get-tough-biden-says-press-has-been-sexist-unfair-palin

Rodriguez suggested to Biden that the ad was in poor taste coming on the heels of news that Palin’s daughter is five-months pregnant: “Why release it when there’s so much attention on her 17-year-old daughter choosing to have a baby? People are criticizing the timing of that ad.”

Biden lamely claimed that the issue was above his pay grade: “I haven’t seen the ad, and you talk about my pay grade, I didn’t — I haven’t seen the ad, and I didn’t even know that even an ad was released.”

BEST JOE GAFFE EVER!

He actually says that Waxear and Leahy are compiling files and going through them with a fine tooth comb looking for criminal acts, right now! I’d say that was pursuing criminal charges. Now I need to shower. Yecchhh!

Maybe Obama can go to Detroit and help out his buddy the mayor, you know the one that was a super del. for the Dem.’s since he’s going to be in jail for the next year and a half. Gotta love our system of justice.

tee866 on September 4, 2008 at 12:42 PM

They have had two freaking years to do something other than threaten people.

Besides, considering what a complete dud the Democrats have been when it comes to running the Congress, dealing with the economic problems the country faces or even ending the war…they don’t need to be judging the other party.
They just talk talk talk. That is all they do.

Terrye on September 4, 2008 at 12:43 PM

Here’s the great Hope and Change that will be the
