Who are the rednecks?

Gawker looks at the blue-staters rushing to define Sarah Palin as a drooling hick with a gun, living in a double-wide Governor’s Trailer in Juneau, and wonders why they believe conservatives to be the xenophobes. For people who supposedly support a woman’s right to succeed on her own terms and express opposition to prejudice, the building meme in the Leftosphere regarding Palin suggests that their ideals seem highly mutable:
How will the chattering classes of the blue states respond to the family saga of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin? Why, with the same flinty-eyed suspicion and close-mindedness that we profess to hate in the “God, gays, and guns” country of rural Americans. The Palin family background gives otherwise intelligent people the chance to indulge in the basest and most cartoonish of regional and rural stereotypes. …
And so the precious blue-state liberals reveal themselves to be the small-minded yokels suspicious of anything and everyone that’s different.
We’ve already seen this, and it comes from the very top of the Democratic ticket. In an unguarded moment among hard-Left elites in San Francisco, Barack Obama himself dismissed middle America as people bitterly clinging to their guns and their God only because they hadn’t yet learned to love Big Government. The crowd laughed at this sneering comment, and now the entire Democratic Party appears to have joined in the laughter over a Governor who grew up in just that kind of community.
That was a defining moment for Barack Obama; this is a defining moment for the entire party and the media. They claim to represent and/or champion blue-collar America, and yet the moment someone outside the elite enters the highest levels of political contest, what do they do? They sneer at her humble beginnings, they sneer at her community, and they sneer at her values — all of which embody the middle-America, suburban identity. And not only does she come from that heart of middle America, she has been tremendously popular among her fellow Alaskans, meaning that the sneering jibes hit at all of middle America, too.
It might work, at least for a short period of time. Ridicule can be a powerful weapon — but only when one believes they are in on the joke, and not the butt of it. Once people understand that Democrats and the media are laughing not at Sarah Palin herself but the entire idea of Sarah Palin, then Democrats may find that they’re the only ones laughing.
Update: Q&O links to a less humorous take from another liberal dismayed by the bloodthirstiness of the media and Democrats:
We surrendered all hope. We surrendered our shared dreams that our daughters would inherit a better world, a world of promise, equality, justice, fairness and honor.
We had dreamed of a world where our 17 years old daughters wouldn’t be striped naked and raped on the front page of the New York Times, above the fold.
We dreamed of a world where a candidate, man or woman, could run for the highest office in the land and not be “swiftboated” with sexual lies and slander so vicious, so cruel, so gross and destructive that they actually wither our very soul. …
So I thought the extremely bizarre story, so obvious a blatant lie, that somehow appeared in The Daily Kos, claiming Governor Sarah Palin had somehow faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her wayward teenage daughter would be laughed off and quickly vanish form the Kos pages like the trash it was. It was a joke, A sad, sick joke.
But instead of the aborted fetus it should have been, it was born full grown into the waiting arms of liberal bloggers and journalists, who quickly passed out cigars and congratulated themselves as proud mamas and papas. All this in spite of the fact that absolutely everyone knew the story was an absolute lie.
The only thing we aborted was the truth.
Read the whole post. Some integrity remains on the Left, but precious little.

Feckless Obama of the great divide.
When Obama first came on the scene, Americans treated him pleasantly, even generously well before getting to know him.
Obama’s example of cruelty towards others is his own cross to bear. He admitted at Saddleback Church that his mother and grandparents warned him not to be so abusive with people. He hasn’t even the judgment to bite his own tongue. Loose lips sink ships.

I just read something facinating that I hadnt considered about Hillary and Palin.
The democratic women dont want Sarah Palin to be the first female President. They want that honor to go to clinton. So that is why they are against Palin. They want their gal to be the first.
I dont think McCain is going to win over too many hillbackers. What he needs to do is two fold.
He has to use Palin to win conservative and independant women. Dont play up her guns and bible side play up her Mom and family side.
Second he has to point out to the hillbackers that if Obama is elected its very unlikely Hillary will ever be that first President. That Obama is as much an obstacle to that as McCain is.

Note also the sneering at Palin for attending the University of Idaho, with both Dowd and Susan Reimer making the exact same analogy comparing Palin’s education to Obama’s:

She’s a sitting governor, with a compelling life history. She lacks a strong academic background, but when has that ever been an important ingredient in a good president? I’m flummoxed by this media-driven Palin hysteria. For every criticism of Palin, a similar one can be made of Obama, often a stronger criticism, and yet they’re not made, they’re not pushed in the MSM. This is some of the most bald-faced media bias I’ve ever seen.

A woman who 20 years ago as aspirations to lead Sportscenter, not the free world.
A woman who last year “wasn’t paying enough attention to Iraq” to have an opinion on the surge.
Someone for whom McCain cited the fact that her state is close to Russia to allay fears of her lack of foreign policy experience.

I’ve noted that liberals have been up in arms about the movie Juno ever since it came out (which, on its own, was a wonderful movie either way). They seem to be VERY offended by the idea of a teenage girl exercising her choice to rule out abortion.
Personally, I’m with Fred on the issue. I think it should be decided state-to-state, allowing the citizens to have a voice in whether it should be legal. At the same time, the proponents of “pro-choice” really seem to only favor choosing one way.

Stupid troller. What she said was very clever and humorous. Constitutionally, the VP succeeds the prez if necessary, and presides over the Senate, and breaks ties. John McCain jokes a VP inquires daily about the health of the prez. They have no other constitutional duties and lack a specific role. They attend a lot of funerals. Each VP is different. Some are given more influence by the prez. Some are made to carry water, others are freer to do their own thing. Palin’s point was she’s doing good work as Gov of AK, and compared to that her role as VP is unclear, and to a perhaps uncomfortable degree determined by the prez himself. That being said, she must accept as it’s such an honor. But it’s fair to voice some trepidation about it. With such little material we have on Salin, I thought her quips on being a VP were ultimately very intelligent and to the point.
Paul-Cincy on September 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Here’s the quote from Palin.
As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?
Tom_Shipley on September 3, 2008 at 11:31 AM
For too long I have railed against business as usual inside the Beltway, which was enough of a reason to support Gov Palin. I understand she will be VP, so not in any position to veto legislation, but she is exactly the type of everday person I want in Washington to hopefully hit all these high priced lawyers turned professional politicians over the head with the common sense stick.
It is now up to the voters to ensure that it is Republicans sitting in those seats and not Dems. It does no good to send McCain and Palin to the White House if we don’t give them a supporting cast.

Well, frankly the US would be in better shape if “rednecks” ran the place. Investors Business Daily has been a big supporter of Gov. Palin. She’s the key to unlocking our natural resources. It’s imperative that we do so. Here’s their latest on Palin:
Palin’s Importance
“When Alaska governor Sarah Palin was chosen for the McCain vice presidential ticket, most attention was on her beauty-queen past and down-home North Woods family life. In reality, she’s the powerful governor of Alaska, the most pivotal state in the union for energy.
John McCain understood well that it’s the one state that can liberate the U.S. not just from high prices but from increasingly threatening enemies whose power derives solely from high oil prices.
Alaska was purchased in 1867 explicitly to ensure America’s energy future. Palin’s leadership has done much to develop Alaska’s energy resources, but the state is still stonewalled by Congress.
Palin’s strong Alaskan presence in Washington will change that.”

Okay, Tom, I’ll bite — what does the Vice President do? The answer is, it depends on the President. Other than being a tie-breaker in the Senate and taking over if the big guy pops his clogs, the role of the VP has been defined on the fly, differently in different administrations.

The Monster on September 3, 2008 at 12:53 PM
OK, I will admit that seeing the video, it was more of a joke on her part.
My main problem with Ed’s post — and many from the right-wing noise machine — are that the “media” and left are attacking Palin because of what she represents. Or that she “scares” them. When most of the criticism of her is about her A) lack of experience (which she does lack… she has MUCH less than Obama, which you guys have attacked for the past year) B) specific issue like troopergate.
I will say I don’t/didn’t support the conspiracy theorists looking into the Palin’s really the grandmother theory. You don’t push stuff like that, you don’t make a 17 year old girl the focus of hearsay like that. And you just generally don’t focus on people’s family like that (as Obama correctly pointed out).
I just don’t see much evidence of this “redneck” thing. I did see gawker thing from above, but that’s one post on one site. It seems to me it’s much like the “media bias” meme. It’s something that’s hard to prove or disprove, so you just run with it — reality be damned.
As far as me visiting Obama’s church, why don’t those who are making the American-hating, racists claims visit the church first making those claims. Again, like the redneck thing, you take a view examples and blow it up to smear and entire congregation of people.)
Tom_Shipley on September 3, 2008 at 1:17 PM
Again, no, she does not have less experience than Obama. Obama has never been a mayor or governor, has never been in charge of an armed forces unit, has never dealt with tribal groups in his region, has never served on any committees of note, nor done a thing to root out corruption, particularly in his own party.
And I will emphasize:
Sarah Palin will not be taking the oath on inauguration day if the Republicans win.
Barack Obama will be taking the oath on inauguration day if the Democrats win.
The executive experience of the former is nowhere near as relevant as that of the latter. Lack of experience is Obama’s problem, because he is running for president. Sarah Palin is not.
MadisonConservative on September 3, 2008 at 1:41 PM
I will take the executive experience of a governor over the experience of a Senator who hardly ever showed up for work.

Probably not, Tom is usually a drive by troll. He drops one hate bomb, then runs and hides.

I’ve been to churchs like the wrong rev. wright’s. his isn’t the only church like that. and I’ve been in the company of a few NOI types, I wouldn’t go to their ‘church’, and their disdain and hatred for white people, and this country is obvious.
you’d be surprised how prevalent the wrong rev wright’s theology is in black churchs.

I’m not surprised to see Tom_Shipley admitting he was wrong, which is hardly a typical thing for a leftist to do. He does not troll, and he tries to get people to engage with him. He’s flat wrong to say that Palin has “MUCH less” experience than Obama, but I suspect that, as with the what’s-the-VP-do? business, he’s repeating something he heard, but has not yet investigated.
Tom_Shipley, you’re better than that. Do you have any support for your assertion that Obama has more experience than Palin?
