Video: Meet the Palins; Update: McCain tells staffers, “We’re going to fight back”

Yes, that’s Bristol Palin and her fiance there to greet Maverick as he touches down in Minneapolis. A sweet moment, especially the smile on her face after a brutal few days. Whether they’re there because the campaign decided it plays better to have them there than out of sight or whether it’s because McCain is simply that classy (or, most likely, both) I leave for you to decide. For what it’s worth, the Palins’ soon-to-be in-law claims that the couple was planning to get married before they knew she was pregnant. Exit quotation: “This is just a bonus.”

Update: Sounds like the Eagleton option is off the table. Before this story’s done circulating, Maverick’s standing with the base is apt to be at an all-time high:

John McCain spoke to staff and advisers working in the campaign War Room at the Minneapolis Hilton this afternoon, and forcefully vowed to fight hard to defend his runningmate Sarah Palin against attacks from the media and Democrats. “They’re not doing right by our vice president, they’re not doing right by the American people,” McCain said, according to a source in the room. “We’re gonna fight back, we’re gonna get ‘em.” McCain pounded his fist into his hand as he spoke, the source said, and made clear that he would be aggressively challenging those who are attacking Palin.

McCain advisers expect that he will address the issue in his speech to the convention tomorrow evening.

You just keep the faith. It’s all you have. – fossten on September 3, 2008 at 6:38 PM

It was all McCain had when he stayed at the Hanoi Hilton. It was all Roger Staubach had when he threw the winning touchdown pass and uttered a Hail Mary.

As I recall, the pass was completed and the Cowboys won.

Can she…?

J_Gocht on September 3, 2008 at 6:35 PM

Or brigades or battalions like that magnificent Biden…or that Canada doesn’t have a president, like Obama thinks???
But then you can ignore the mistakes on your side, you’re too busy trying to find them on the other side.
By the way, don’t forget to remind Obama that Russia has a veto vote in the U.N…..
HAHAHAHAHA!!!, he didn’t know Russia had a veto, unbelievable. He probably thought VETO was another arm of NATO.

“…If McCain loses, you never see me here again…”

Manly, I have to admit, you can be a tad harsh, from time to time; but for you to never be seen or heard from here again…

What fun would that be…?

I’m gonna opt to keep you on board…

No deal….!

r2b, we all have our faults and from time to time we all misspeak.

It’s when we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again… what did Albert Einstein say…?

Oh never mind, that was… “do the same thing over and over and expect different results”

The video was a touching, spontaneous personal moment for all present.

McCain’s campaign was a long shot for a long time. Dead in the water at one point. I have Palinmania. I guess this is what it feels like to be in the tank.

J:

Anyone who thinks the American military has killed more than a million Iraqis does not need to be talking about someone else’s lack of knowledge or experience or anything else. Obama has made some completely outrageous mistakes that would bury any normal person..but because he has other uninformed people such as your self and a drooling compliant press he can get away with much.

But if he wins, his friends in the press can only hide so much, lie so much and evade so much. Sooner or later, he will have to do the job or fall flat on his face.

From time to time. But a troll is a troll 24/7.

You know so many of us owe John McCain a huge apology starting with me.

During the GOP primaries I couldn’t stand him. I was a solid Rudy and then Mitt guy. I cursed the name John McCain.

Now, after his pick of Sarah, and seeing this video, I luv this guy! Capital ‘C’ for classy.

John McCain, from a fellow sailor, I’m sorry I ever doubted you. McCain/Palin ‘08!!!

I was resigned to hold my nose and vote for John McCain with little to no enthusiasm. George W. Bush was too moderate for me and McCain makes him look conservative. But I am elated with Sarah Palin and I am starting to get excited about Mr. McCain in spite of myself. At Saddleback, when he admitted his biggest regret was the failure of his first marriage and then he took responsibility for it’s failure he gained a little more of my respect. I know it was a political move, but he could have still advoided mentioniing it and went for some legislative failure. I liked that. I like the classy way he is handling this situation with Bristol Palin. I am also more and more impressed with Cindy McCain. I was touched last night when the other little girl from Bangladesh came out with her adoptive father (sorry I don’t remember their names). Cindy McCain, by all accounts, has been the real deal when it comes to working with impoverished children. Just imagine the accolades if Michelle Obama had ever even so much as stepped foot in Bangladesh.

I don’t see the importance of the “we planned on getting married anyway”, so what? The point is, five months into the pregnancy, they still aren’t.

Aslans Girl on September 3, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Believe it or not you can see and almost hear what he’s saying to those kids. His sincerity actually shows in his actions. He feels for those kids and what they’ve had to hear and deal with over the past few days.

I don’t read leftist blogs because they are so vulgar and nasty. We know we have trolls assigned to us…just ignore them, don’t get in the dirt with them, don’t bite when they make statements to deliberately incense us…it gets tedious and they have no intention of stopping because the whole purpose for them writing what they do is to get us mad…Don’t feed the trolls please!

Like a lot of folks here I haven’t been a McCain fan in the past…far from it but this video, especially his meeting with Bristol and her fiance’ strikes as being so genuine, warm and kind. I really found it moving and it showed a side of McCain that I didn’t know about. I don’t think many people do and that’s a shame.

Well, as far as McCain being a class act, one anecdote related by a colleague who was in attendance at an event honoring John McCain at which a number of McCain’s fellow senators and VIP’s were in attendance:
Following the event, as everyone headed to their cars, the fellow-senators and VIP’s pushed their way to the head of the line in front of the “common folk” to get their cars from the valets. McCain was standing in line with the regular people, some of the other people in line urged him to go ahead, after all, he was the guest of honor. His answer? “Nope, I’ll wait my turn”.
When I heard that story, my opinion of him (not very high at the time because of the amnesty bill) was raised quite a bit.
