Video: Meet the Palins; Update: McCain tells staffers, “We’re going to fight back”

Yes, that’s Bristol Palin and her fiance there to greet Maverick as he touches down in Minneapolis. A sweet moment, especially the smile on her face after a brutal few days. Whether they’re there because the campaign decided it plays better to have them there than out of sight or whether it’s because McCain is simply that classy (or, most likely, both) I leave for you to decide. For what it’s worth, the Palins’ soon-to-be in-law claims that the couple was planning to get married before they knew she was pregnant. Exit quotation: “This is just a bonus.”

Update: Sounds like the Eagleton option is off the table. Before this story’s done circulating, Maverick’s standing with the base is apt to be at an all-time high:

John McCain spoke to staff and advisers working in the campaign War Room at the Minneapolis Hilton this afternoon, and forcefully vowed to fight hard to defend his runningmate Sarah Palin against attacks from the media and Democrats. “They’re not doing right by our vice president, they’re not doing right by the American people,” McCain said, according to a source in the room. “We’re gonna fight back, we’re gonna get ‘em.” McCain pounded his fist into his hand as he spoke, the source said, and made clear that he would be aggressively challenging those who are attacking Palin.

McCain advisers expect that he will address the issue in his speech to the convention tomorrow evening.

You can just imagine the conversation between McCain, Bristol and Levi, where the Senator apologizes for everything they have been put through and promises to do everything he can to help them. And as you play it out in your mind’s eye, you know that each and every bit of it is true.

gridlock2 on September 3, 2008 at 4:50 PM

McCain should showcase Levi and Bristol as a couple that found themselves with a baby, and did the right thing. He should also comment on being the child conceived of parents out of wedlock not being so bad since Obama seems to have dealt with it well.

At least their child won’t grow up calling his grandmother “mom” and then throw her under the bus someday.

Hening on September 3, 2008 at 4:50 PM

Whether they’re there because the campaign decided it plays better to have them there than out of sight or whether it’s because McCain is simply that classy (or, most likely, both) I leave for you to decide.

Class act. There is no reason to have them “out of sight” as if there is something to be ashamed of.

Brat on September 3, 2008 at 4:50 PM

I’ve had a bad day, politically speaking. Bristol’s smile has really helped me out.

Harpoon on September 3, 2008 at 4:50 PM

How is this Alaskan family going to withstand the savagery of Obama and his vast army of evil?

jay12 on September 3, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Class, dignity and a positive outlook on life. Same as us “regular” Americans.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 3, 2008 at 4:51 PM

That’s Track. I guess he got some kind of special leave of absence from training for this. Very considerate of the Army, if so.

The Army released him, but he still had to take leave to go.

Chuck Schick on September 3, 2008 at 4:51 PM

Notice how Sarah and Todd kind of hug around 1:24? It’s so subtle and touching. What a beautiful family. Suck it, Maureen Dowd.

Had to replay just to watch that part, and you’re absolutely right. You can tell they love each other very much.

And I love your end quote, lol.

That was great.

Brat on September 3, 2008 at 4:53 PM

I have a feeling that the Dems who think that Sarah Palin is going to buckle and fold under the pressure (being a female from a rural state and all) are going to be unpleasantly surprised.

On one of the news progams I heard an analyst say something to the effect of “The political landscape of Alaska is littered with the bodies of those who crossed Sarah Palin”.

Hollowpoint on September 3, 2008 at 4:53 PM

One of my favorite talk show hosts sez that he has no problem with Palin yet he posted a few party pictures of Bristol and finace and friend(s) in which they are displaying a bottle of Morgan’s Spiced Rum, etc. He swears that he isn’t chauvinist but he’s posting tabloid pics and wondering aloud how Palin could take care of her children– since he assumes that her husband will keep on as a fisherman while his wife is VP in the WH. HELLO? The no-brainer is that he would be Mr. Mom.
I questioned and still question HRC’s ‘parenting’ style (brain-washed her in favor of her adulterous father) and her reasons for having Chelsea, (photo-op for an ‘in’ with mothers) but this is just dumb.
I still think that Romney was the best choice, but the base would still be split on that pick. Besides, what happened to ‘the VP doesn’t matter much’? And…don’t we want to bring fresh blood to DC?

Christine on September 3, 2008 at 4:53 PM

She has a beautiful family.

Esthier on September 3, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Indeed she does. It was nice to see all (most?) of McCain’s kids in one place, too — a rare occurrence, from what I understand since three of them are from his first marriage. The dual family photo op at the end of the tarmac greeting was neat to me. That’s a pretty impressive bunch of kids between them both! I think he has 7 and she has 5. Wow.

aero on September 3, 2008 at 4:53 PM

If Obama weren’t such a dullard, he would realize that what the media is doing to Palin will make it impossible for Republicans to accept him as President, should he get elected.

I know I won’t. Obama can go to hell on a cracker from Day 1 as far as I’m concerned.

Obama will be nothing to me. Not a President, not an American. I don’t want to hear about him or what he does.

I’ll consider the office vacant until he’s either impeached or loses re-election. Which he will, because he will be an awful President.

Obama could stop this if he really wanted to. He won’t, because he’s a gutless, worthless little man who wants to achieve the Presidency by any means necessary.

NoDonkey on September 3, 2008 at 4:54 PM

RE: McCain deciding to open a can of whup-ass on the media and the Dems — If anyone thought the guy who withstood 5 1/2 years of torture for what he knew was right was going to cave to a little media pressure, they had another think coming.

Heh. About all the Left seem to have these days is strongly worded editorials and smears. Having seen the Hanoi Hilton from the *inside*, I doubt Sen. McCain gives a rat’s ass about either.

I do hope the Left are prepared for what comes next, although I doubt it.

This is going to be an ugly campaign, people.

acat on September 3, 2008 at 4:54 PM

We have to fight. The left will stop at NOTHING. Remember how the left threatened to murder Ross Perot’s daughter, and he laughed at them, so they sent him pictures of an assassin on her front lawn looking in the window at her, and he withdrew from the race, got her security beefed up, then re-entered and lost. It was his temporary dropping out that cost him the election and his rejoining that cost Bush the elder his loss to Clinton, which lead to 9/11.

Palin is the best pick, and one of the best decisions, McCain ever made. She’s not going anywhere except the WHITE HOUSE.

NEVER STOP FIGHTING THE LEFT NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER STOP ATTACKING US.

Slightly O/T Sorry:

O’REILLY IS GETTING DUPED!!!!!!!

Bill O’Reilly is getting played like a worn out fiddle by excepting Barack Obama’s commitment to be on the O’Reilly Factor (THE NO SPIN ZONE) on the same night that John McCain ( A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE) is speaking before the nation. This is unprecedented by any media to give a competitor a forum on the same night and Bill O’Reilly is swallowing this hook, line, Obama’s bulls**t right down O’Reillys throat. If Roger Ailes and O”Reilly had any class they would tape-delay the interview for the next day. Bill O’Reilly is getting duped by Obama and is too dumb to realize it.

Rovin on September 3, 2008 at 4:57 PM

There certainly are a few things you cannot argue about the McCain’s and the Palin’s: authenticity, strength of family and toughness.

BigD on September 3, 2008 at 4:58 PM

Tonight’s theme music (at the end of Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech, The Impossible Dream”:

To dream … the impossible dream …
To fight … the unbeatable foe …
To bear … with unbearable sorrow …
To run … where the brave dare not go …
To right … the unrightable wrong …
To love … pure and chaste from afar …
To try … when your arms are too weary …
To reach … the unreachable star …

This is my quest, to follow that star …
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far …
To fight for the right, without question or pause …
To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause …

And I know if I’ll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie will lie peaceful and calm,
when I’m laid to my rest …
And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach … the unreachable star …

What a great family. I want them to adopt me!

On one of the news progams I heard an analyst say something to the effect of “The political landscape of Alaska is littered with the bodies of those who crossed Sarah Palin”.

Can’t remember where I saw it, but supposedly a McCain staffer was warning Sarah about the ugliness of national politics. She thanked the guy for the warning and then said, “By the way, do you know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?”

The campaign staffer said no.

Sarah: “A hockey mom wears lipstick.”

We’ve got nothing to worry about, folks.

Very good.

When they announced Palin, I sincerely HOPED that Fred Thompson would be her champion, aiding her transition from governing our nation’s largest state, richest in necessary natural resource, to supporting our next President as our VEEP. Where the job as McCain’s campaign aide de camp is enough professionally, with the horrible personal assassination attempts raining down on the Palins, Sen. Thompson proves his vivacity is absolutely reliable on every front, in combat as well as diplomacy. I do hope that Fred Thompson becomes our next Secretary of State, preserving our nation, enacting our Founding Principles.

maverick muse on September 3, 2008 at 5:02 PM

Sounds like the Eagleton option is off the table.
As if any sane person ever thought it was on the table…

The fact that so many on the left were buying into or pretending to buy into the idea shows you just how stupid the people we’re fighting against are. I’m not in favor of underestimating the enemy – they head into this battle with numerous logistical and other advantages, and not all of them are equally insanely stupid – but it’s worth reminding yourself from time to time that we’re not fighting with an army of political geniuses, and, when acting as a mob, they tend to reduce the lowest common denominator.

CK MacLeod on September 3, 2008 at 5:03 PM

I will admit, any reservations I previously had about McCain where wrong. He is exactly the man I want leading this great country. Sarah Palin and her family make me proud to be an American. I see hope for this country that I never could have imagined a few months ago. Real, good, strong, decent Americans controlling the executive branch of our government. What a great day for democracy.

PS: Get even with the liberal controlled media Mac.

And yes, all stations were glued to the DNC all week long.

Enoxo on September 3, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Enough with counting headlines and the speculative stuff. There is your media bias right there. How can ANY network cover the DNC then not cover the RNC.

The FCC should revoke the broadcast license of any station that covers one and not the other. There is no excuse.

Who are run by liberals… you forget.

upinak on September 3, 2008 at 5:09 PM

About my comment about HRC’s political reasons for being a mother: I forgot to say that I think it’s obviouls that Palin is doing this FOR her kids, not BECAUSE OF them. HRC is convinced that she’s ‘doing good’, but it’s hard not to see a big difference between the conservative and the variable liberal-socialist.
The left feels free to bash the female Repub mercilessly while they refused to utter a word about Silky, for instance. The movie “The Contender” (written to soften BJ’s troubles) was all about a liberal president, (Jeff Bridges) and a female VP, (Joan Allen), who was chosen after his VP passed away. The press went after her because of some wild parties she attended in college…strange how it’s more of a media circus in real life and when it’s about a Repub.
Tonight may change the dynamic because McCain will not allow her to drop out and Sarahcuda will be unleashed. For once i wish i had a front row seat.

Christine on September 3, 2008 at 5:10 PM

I love this video, and this pick.

There are valid reservations about her experience, but the left + media are erasing any doubts by their over-the-top smears and unfair campaign against her.

She looks real, and I think she’ll stand up just fine. Reminds me of a few other strong women I know. Underestimate her at your own peril.

I didn’t like McCain (still don’t- the ending of the Redstate Update that says “you have to vote for McCain to get her… there’s always a catch) sums up my feelings pretty well.

He is showing class and backbone, which was never in doubt. If he can be pushed right on a few policy issues….

I’m looking forward to voting FOR McCain/Palin instead of AGAINST Obama.

And, I know you will, but keep your chin up Palin family!

I don’t know if it’s any interest to you lot but aside from the BBC (imagine the Daily Kos transmuted into the national public broadcaster) the most vituperative UK newssource in recent days for smearing Palin seems to be the Times, which today lead on their website with an obviously fake photo of Sarah Palin supposedly in a stars-and-stripes bikini with a rifle in her hand. Owned by Rupert Murdoch. As is Fox. The channel on which O’Reilly will be putting his own personal ambition ahead of decency in his forthcoming Obama interview. Am I being paranoid or is there a connection?

schiehallion on September 3, 2008 at 5:34 PM

He’s saying that in good faith I think so she doesn’t look weak tonight with the campaign choke chain being pulled some to keep her away from tearing into the media and Obama.

Later on, McCain really needs a powerful ad to connect the Barack “punishment of a mother” quote to what silent Democrats, silent feminists and attack dog Obama cult followers in the media are all trying to do on Obama’s behalf. That seems to be the perfect targeted nuke to blow up the Obama campaign and educate America about the sick reality of these hypocritical liberals.

The intolerant goal is to essentially punish the two Palin mothers for their recent choices in the spirit of the Obama philosophy that death equals life, and choosing life brings scorn and shame. I seriously think the spirit of it all was to push Bristol specifically to break her for a bigger cover story, whereupon the supermom smiling Gov would be crushed and give up the campaign spot and her own joyful spirit. The sick people driving the crusade attacked at her most vulnerable point outside herself. What Sarah represents standing strong and tall in her introduction and again tonight simply triggers an impulse that she must be destroyed by any means necessary.

It’s the first time I’ve noticed though that people will be willing to go as far as selling their souls to elevate The One to power.

My dad, a WWII vet, compares this to his typical mission on a bomb run…fly through the flak storm, keeping her steady and strong until they’re over the target where they drop their bomb load and then head back home, in this case, the Whitehouse maybe?

Moxie on September 3, 2008 at 5:35 PM

What’s not to admire about this clip? The NEXT Commander in Chief greets his beautiful family; with one of his military sons trying to figure out whether to shake Dad’s hand or hug him; his obvious joy at hugging his adopted daughter from Bangladesh; his warm greeting to his VP and her husband; his kidding around about Todd Palin’s loss of whiskers and cleaning up so well; his obvious well wishes, encouragement, and admiration for the unwed couple who made the right choice, despite a mountain of politicians, press and media critiquing and judging their every breath, every decision, and their private lives as if they were three headed Communist frogs; his kiss for the smallest Palin and most unfortunate child there, but one who is vastly loved by his family (it is obvious); his playfulness with Piper Palin; and his welcome for Track Palin and introduction to his two military sons, and their obvious friendliness to a comrade in arms. Then a family photo of the next Leaders of the Free World.

I’m paying money for one of those.

Okay…the kissing the baby part was just a *little* over the top ; )

This is the best footage of McCain I’ve seen since the coverage of his return from Vietnam.

I feel honored to support what can only be called a “real man,” and a real American.

Hiding them sends the message that we are going to send our unwed teen daughters away, just as they used to do. Having the boyfriend there sends a clear message to young kids. It takes both a man and a woman to make a child (even in a lab, a man is necessary) and it takes both a man and a woman to raise that child. Young men need to step up to the plate and be a part of their child’s life. Whether or not marriage is the answer, is for each individual couple to decide, but what is non negotiable is the fact that a child needs both parents.

CK, there’s sixty days left to go.

That’s an eternity in politics.

Sarah will have to hold at least one press conference before the election.

There’s plenty of time for Senator McCain to reconsider…!

J_Gocht on September 3, 2008 at 5:50 PM

You can’t help but watch this and think …

This are REAL people.

Could some of it have been theater? Perhaps. But the way the elder sons … the troops we send in harm’s way … interact shows that there’s something very genuine at play in this scene.

It’s not all Queen’s waves and mugging for cameras. It’s more like two families reuniting.

Maverick’s standing with the base is apt to be at an all-time high

You know I don’t know if I’m the base or not. But I supported him in 2000 sent his books to everyone in my family… talked him up. But then I lost faith in him as my Senator. But I really respect the way he has handled this thing. And you can tell by this that Bristol’s international ordeal, he is partly responsible for, is important to him.

This is more like the man I supported in 2000.

It was never on the table. There was never a reliable source for any of it.

Maxx on September 3, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Okay, that’s it. I never thought it could happen, but I officially love John McCain. I have disliked him since the primary against Bush, but I have learned to appreciate his finer qualities.

This is a real man, people.

Re Bill O’Reilly:
Yes he is getting royally duped by Barry Hussein and he is showing himself to be the Ratings Whore Extraordinaire by airing Barry on the same night as McCain’s Acceptance.

HOWEVER….

I .. and many other redbloods.. are going to be watching the Giants-Redskins NFL Season opener when Bloviating Bill interviews Barry Hussein…and I will only turn back when it is time to hear McCain’s speech later on that night.

So let O’Reilly sell his worthless soul to the Devil… we got Football and then a War Hero tmw night.

Barney Frank: Sarah Palin’s family life is fair game
By Associated Press
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 – Updated 24h ago

WASHINGTON – Rep. Barney Frank is among the first Democrats to publicly say Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s family background, including the pregnancy of her unwed teenage daughter, should be fair game for campaign discussion.

“They’re the ones that made an issue of her family,” Frank, D-Mass., said Tuesday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Interesting that I can’t find an email address to email this moron.

Barney Frank is most likely a bit bitter because of the manner in which the wingnut talk show hosts have so relentlessly attacked and parodied his sexual orientation.

Perhaps he feels… “all’s fair in love and war”.

Yah know what I mean…?

J_Gocht on September 3, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Oh man, we’re toast. Look how embarrassed he is to see Bristol and Levi there. You can tell he’s totally uncomfortable about it and is trying to act like they’re not there.

/yeah right. There goes the Eagleton Hail Mary play that the opposing team’s been trying to put into action.

That was one of the nicest things I have seen come out of this campaign.

There’s plenty of time for Senator McCain to reconsider…! -J_Gocht on September 3, 2008 at 5:50 PM

But why? Do you really want him to reconsider? I can’t understand why the Drive-Bys are constantly harping about what a horrible decision this was for McCain to make. If it really was a horrible decision, they should be cheering it gleefully, in anticipation of a political pratfall. Sort of like what Republicans did with Biden: we were hoping he’d pick Biden and were overjoyed when he did, because Biden is a loudmouth putz.

And yet they are shrieking about how stupid McCain was to pick her. Could it be they – and you – are afraid?

james23 on September 3, 2008 at 6:28 PM

I watched that clip twice. I would say we are seeing a genuine “image” of John McCain. His interaction with the children and young adults moved me. And I’m his biggest critic here. If he would only give up on the open borders crap, I would feel much better about him.

I suspect his bitterness is rooted in a much deeper psychopathology. Then again, Sarah never experienced the joys of male prostitution. Try better next time, toad.

This absolutely the best stance. The more exposure Sarah, Bristol and her Husband to be gets the less impact all the negative hype will have. Just stay in their face cause you know the left can only spew their sewage under cover of dark. They throw huge amounts against the wall and just wait to see what sticks thats all.
