Video: Meet the Palins; Update: McCain tells staffers, “We’re going to fight back”

Yes, that’s Bristol Palin and her fiance there to greet Maverick as he touches down in Minneapolis. A sweet moment, especially the smile on her face after a brutal few days. Whether they’re there because the campaign decided it plays better to have them there than out of sight or whether it’s because McCain is simply that classy (or, most likely, both) I leave for you to decide. For what it’s worth, the Palins’ soon-to-be in-law claims that the couple was planning to get married before they knew she was pregnant. Exit quotation: “This is just a bonus.”
Update: Sounds like the Eagleton option is off the table. Before this story’s done circulating, Maverick’s standing with the base is apt to be at an all-time high:
John McCain spoke to staff and advisers working in the campaign War Room at the Minneapolis Hilton this afternoon, and forcefully vowed to fight hard to defend his runningmate Sarah Palin against attacks from the media and Democrats. “They’re not doing right by our vice president, they’re not doing right by the American people,” McCain said, according to a source in the room. “We’re gonna fight back, we’re gonna get ‘em.” McCain pounded his fist into his hand as he spoke, the source said, and made clear that he would be aggressively challenging those who are attacking Palin.
McCain advisers expect that he will address the issue in his speech to the convention tomorrow evening.

Way to brass it out. Courage. Class.
Nice.

One big happy family. Man I hope they win.

Class act across the board.
Nice job Mr. McCain – very nice job.
jake-the-goose on September 3, 2008 at 4:28 PM
Great video. McCain spent longer talking with Bristol and her fiance than to Sarah and Todd Palin. You know that was deliberate. I liked the kiss for Trig also.

BadgerHawk on September 3, 2008 at 4:30 PM
Looks like McCain had a nice long conversation with the parents to be regarding all the scrutiny they’ve been under. Can tell by the gestures that he was saying something about holding up under the pressure, knows it’s tough, etc. Classy.
DerKrieger on September 3, 2008 at 4:30 PM
Very, very sweet.

Check out the lede to the story AP linked:
That’s some subtle nuancey goodness, right there.
Was it really necessary to include “unwed” after identifying the guy as her “boyfriend”?
This isn’t the Clinton family after all.
Jack M. on September 3, 2008 at 4:31 PM
What a great family.
The libs can dream on about another Eagleton. If Palin was not on the ballot, Republicans would just write her name in.

McCain loves Kids. I have a friend in Cali, where McCain talked to his son for 15 minutes and didn’t let anyone interupt.
:)

Notice how Sarah and Todd kind of hug around 1:24? It’s so subtle and touching. What a beautiful family. Suck it, Maureen Dowd.
Pasalubong on September 3, 2008 at 4:33 PM
They picked the wrong sailor to f with.
John McCain’s not Namby-Pamby Obambi. He doesn’t sprint out of news conferences when he doesn’t like the questions. He doesn’t cower in fear of debates.
Barry’s an untested, unqualified, unaccomplished wuss.
And his sneaky, underhanded attacks through his intermediaries, will not work.
NoDonkey on September 3, 2008 at 4:33 PM
Team McCain shouldn’t be too aggressive with their pushback… hating the media is too often a lazy copout. Team McCain could have handled this rollout a lot better.
ninjapirate on September 3, 2008 at 4:34 PM
I know McCain’s arms can’t go above his shoulders. Well, my eyes can’t go above Sarah’s chest. She’s hot!

Obama is a metrosexual – not a real man
DerKrieger on September 3, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Jeez, I guess I never really saw Mav stride around that much. It never occurred to me the limits of his movement. I mean, goddamn, that man went through a lot. As a policy maker, questionable. As a hard and strong man, there is no doubt, and my guess is that he picked a woman with the same fortitude. He’s sticking by the Palins just as he stuck with his men in the Hanoi Hilton, detractors and enemies be damned. These are two people who have something very high in their minds: loyalty.
I think that loyalty will serve this nation well. November can’t get here quick enough.
MadisonConservative on September 3, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Since they plan to marry, wouldn’t it be more correct to identify the young man as Bristol Palin’s fiance?
AZCoyote on September 3, 2008 at 4:35 PM
After all of the pricipled issues that I have disagreed with McCain on-
This entire Palin pick has been a class act. And this is just icing on the cake. The Maverick has gone a long way to win back my respect.
Thanks for coming over to my side of the Conservative table John. I salute you sir.
FiveWays on September 3, 2008 at 4:36 PM
I’m not a McCain supporter, nor do i particularly like Sarah Palin, but this is pure class.
Obama runs miles from people who he has been friends with for decades without any compulsion towards loyalty or honour. Here you have McCain making is plain he will not let these two kids lives be ruined by MSNBC and the NY Times.
zane on September 3, 2008 at 4:36 PM
I had no doubts on the update, but I still say Sarah needs to take up for herself.
Send her over to Countdown… with a rifle and a hunting knife. Let’s see if she can field dress and ass instead of a moose.

Yes–a classy move by McCain. I hope these kids can handle the crap they’re getting from the media.
Bugler on September 3, 2008 at 4:37 PM
On Friday I thought to myself, what a perfect rollout. No one saw that coming. I suspect a lot of people were probobly thinking the same thing before the media turned into a bunch of partisan hacks, foaming at the mouth waiting to attack.
BadgerHawk on September 3, 2008 at 4:37 PM
sounds like mccain has figured out the press isn’t his friend. hope he remembers it during his presidency.
right4life on September 3, 2008 at 4:37 PM
This is what I’ve been saying. The kid’s mother said he told her they were engaged months ago at the beginning of the year.
The left and the media cannot comprehend the thought that this couple were wanting to start a family… so they ignore it and make it look as hideous as they could.
Enoxo on September 3, 2008 at 4:38 PM
Yeah they are treating her how they treated Hillary after Iowa…remember how that worked out?

Brass Balls. That’s all.
Sakaki on September 3, 2008 at 4:38 PM
The Palin pick has done much more for McCain that rally the troops. It has humanized McCain, and has done more to highlight his devotion to his family and country than perhaps anything else anyone could have done.
And his ralling around Palin has proven, very early in the Campaign, that he is a fighter. And Americans love a fighter.

And that, my friends, is a fitting definition of Conservative vs liberal. As a conservative I would figuratively punch a liberal in the mouth for any slimy act of his/her….. a liberal will only cry and get me arrested….. big difference , as Obammy is about to find out. For literalistic ilk out there, as well as Soros sots… note I used the word ” figuratively”

The media is quite simply out of control. I’ve never seen anything like this.
Slublog on September 3, 2008 at 4:40 PM
Who is the man on the end? Is that Sarah Palin’s son or another boyfriend? I thought her son wouldn’t be able to make it on the campaign, but he doesn’t look like Willow’s boyfriend.

But, but, but, Senator Obama loves waffles!
Peri Winkle on September 3, 2008 at 4:40 PM
Wouldn’t that be the greatest thing ever? Right after she gives her speech, bringing down the house, she trots over to MSNBC and demands to talk to the Legthrill. Confronts him (and coward Olberdouche in NY) as to why they are so in the tank and so irresponsible. Totally faces them down. It would be for the ages.
Darksean on September 3, 2008 at 4:40 PM
Is that video working for you guys?
DaveS on September 3, 2008 at 4:40 PM

Exactly the kind of man I want for my President!
dman232 on September 3, 2008 at 4:41 PM
This is a two-front war for McCain and Palin — they’re facing down both the Dems and the media (I know, one and the same, but they’re different fights). They have a lot of enthusiastic and willing foot soldiers out here on the interwebz, though, and I hope they find a way to tap into our energy effectively in the coming weeks.
aero on September 3, 2008 at 4:41 PM
McCain’s well-known character trait of steely resolution will serve him well here.

I’d like to see that POS’s head mounted and stuffed on a wall, although it would ruin the comforting effect of the fireplace.
Still, I could force myself to enjoy a nice snifter of port next to it on a cold day.

Great job JM, and all. Very sweet. From the moment I saw the first The One ad, it was clear to me that Team McCain understood the martial arts principles by which one uses one’s opponent’s own mass and movement to make them fall. This is what McCain needs to do, with respect to both Obama directly, and the MSM.
I don’t think she needs it, but I will say a prayer that tonight goes well. This is exciting!

That is John Mccain he doesnt leave a man behind and he doesnt abandon his wing(wo)man
William Amos on September 3, 2008 at 4:44 PM
I have strongly disliked John McCain for at least 10 years. For a while after it became clear that he would be our nominee I seriously considered voting writing in George W. Bush this year. Eventually I came around to the rational and responsible conclustion that I needed to just hold my nose, man up, and pull the lever for McCain.
My how things have quickly changed. Now I am a proud supporter of our ticket. I am truly inspired by our nominee for the first time. I have actually been going down to his national headquarters in the evenings and volunteering. What a change!

And yes, all stations were glued to the DNC all week long.

This is becoming crazier by the day. The election has now turned in to the MSM vs. Sarah Palin. Barack is irrelevant in his own presidential campaign.

McCain is a class act and so is Palin.
The sleeze they are up against will be exposed…finally.
Can’t wait to see how the smarmy dolts at MSLSD spin this.
RobCon on September 3, 2008 at 4:46 PM
My first-time voting daughter just said “awwww, that’s so nice” then she said that she kind of gets what all her peer students at Temple feel about Obama. The difference is, she says, that she was already supporting McCain because of his policies. The fact that she can also feel emotionally connected as well, is a plus. She’s brave to stick up for McCain/Palin in her world, I’ll tell you.
