Video: I really haven’t seen any sexism in the coverage, says … Meg Whitman

She missed all the examples cited here by WomenCount, huh? Ah well. She’s been busy. And in fairness to her, part of the media’s bias against Palin has less to do with her being a woman than being the parent of a daughter who was “foolish” enough to carry her child to term. If you missed William Saletan’s post at Slate yesterday or Ace’s superlative commentary on it, head there immediately after you’re done here. We all know, as a simple matter of probability, that the sons and daughters of politicians find themselves in Bristol Palin’s shoes all the time. Saletan crunched the numbers to find out just how often “all the time” really is. Why single the Palins out with the air of breathless scandal, then? Because, silly — Bristol Palin made the mistake of not going to the clinic and depositing mommy’s little inconvenience in the biodumpster. The scandal here, such as it is, is that she’s keeping the baby.
Let’s see if we can help Whitman out with detecting sexism on the trail, though. Below the Fox clip you’ll find a link to video of CNN running a clip of McCain supposedly checking Palin out at the podium. He’s not, of course, and so obviously not that they’re forced to acknowledge that — but of course they ran the clip anyway. Just for a laugh. Click the image to watch.

Oy vey.
They’re also pulling “oops, open mic accident” on Republicans, trying to find news to report that we’re not believing what we’re saying.
They did it on Peggy Noonan.

Its the media doing what they do, they did it to hillary when they smelled blood and now they are doing it to palin, when it comes to women it will backfire.
AP check out the Noonan Murphy open mike story thats just broken everywhere, that is not good.
zane on September 3, 2008 at 4:58 PM
something tells me I’d have a hard time running down a bear for Meg Whitman…..
sven10077 on September 3, 2008 at 5:00 PM
Dick Morris was just on Fox arguing that the left’s attacks will seriously backfire, as the right brings out its armies to defend her and she looks more human.
amerpundit on September 3, 2008 at 5:01 PM
That isn’t true at all Allah.
Do you think Campbell Brown, Mark Shields or John Roberts would be fretting about Biden or Obama’s ability to lead because their youngest child has down syndrome?

I mean look they gave Bobby Kennedy a pass on Ted.
sven10077 on September 3, 2008 at 5:03 PM
judging from the right wing comment sections on the blogs, i havent seen the republican based this enthused about anything since 2005. A sure way to wake up the base, have the old media start attacking a humble talented conservative republican woman.
zane on September 3, 2008 at 5:03 PM
Hey, Joe Biden’s then-21-year-old daughter was arrested in a bar brawl a few years ago.
Doesn’t that mean that Biden is an unfit parent who has neglected his children and is therefore unqualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?
Oh wait, that standard only applies to female candidates.
Glad there’s no sexism here, Meg.
AZCoyote on September 3, 2008 at 5:05 PM
Man, she’s a lot uglier than Palin, I’ll tell you that.

OK. This is real. Ms. Buell, perhaps the single largest financial and independently successful women to back Hillary Clinton, backs a group that sees the sexism against Sarah Palin.
Finally.

Tip to McCain…keep Meg Whitman in the back, back room and away from the cameras.
That woman does not exude enthusiasm for McCain or Palin…
I was waiting for her to any moment say she was going switch and support Obama.

LMAO!!!

Chakra Hammer on September 3, 2008 at 5:09 PM
Zane, I doubt seriously that Governor Palin is humble. I think she can take care of herself. I agree with you on the rest, but make no mistake about it- this is not damsel in distress begging for somebody to save her.
Mark my words. She’s a bad-ass: she’s comin’ and she’s bringin’ hell with her.
lionheart on September 3, 2008 at 5:09 PM
A lot more male sexism than female sexism is what I’m seeing. Double standards, more like.

My Prediction
Biden is going to have a “Stoke” or become “ill” in a couple of says, and Obama will Name Hillary As his Vice-President.

This seems much ado about nothing, not worthy of an “oy” or a “vey.”
Are Chuck Todd, Peggy Noonan, or Mike Murphy operatives for the McCain camp? I thought they were just media pundits.
I don’t really give a moose’s arse what some political “insiders” think about Palin. I’m sure it has ruffled the feathers of lots of folks who thought of themselves as political insiders to wake up and discover that they aren’t. McCain went with his gut and chose a kindred spirit from waaaay outside the Beltway. Palin’s the pick. Grow up and get over it.

That was the conclusion of CNN. I saw Jeanne Moos piece. Didn’t you read your own link?
Moos concluded there was nothing to the rumor. “We’re convinced he was just catching a look at whatever was on the podium,” she stated. “The moral of the story? Don’t look down.”

Meg Whitman is a top-5 surrogate for McCain, and she is not even nominally aware of the framing of the Palin pick by the Dems/MSM? Fuq, talk about off-message!
What.a.doofus. And not really a Republican in the classic Regan sense either, or even in the Bush 43 sense.
Whitman’s idea of a great “Republican” is Gov. Arnold in Cali. Expect her to be a candidate for statewide office in California in 2010, Senate at least and more likely Governor.
Mike D. on September 3, 2008 at 5:15 PM
Noonan open mic thing is a killer.
Must have been turned down to write the Palin speech…
Plus Noonan lost a lot of credibility as a writer – this comment is totally contrary to her Wall St. Journal column.
It would not surprise me that you will see her start edging toward endorsing Obama.
albill on September 3, 2008 at 5:15 PM
1. What Noonan says is not inconsistent with what she wrote. She can think that Palin was not the best pick and that the MSM has been hideous to her family. Plus, it’s not like you’re going to pick a fight with lefty Chuck Todd and disgruntled Mike Murphy while you’re stuck on-set.
2. That being said, I like open mikes. In particular, Noonan — for all of her decription of the Bubble today — has shown herself just as capable of being in it as her colleagues. To quote a classier lady, “Boo. Frickin’. Hoo.”
Karl on September 3, 2008 at 5:15 PM
whats bad is she says the election is now “Over”
jp on September 3, 2008 at 5:15 PM
True. The point, though, is the media is trying to create news. They’re purposefully trying to create soundbytes and gotcha moments to say–AHA, the Republicans even don’t believe what they’re saying.
That’s what was so incredulous with Campbell Brown’s interview, she was trying to get the McCain adviser to say “I don’t know any incidents where Gov. Palin commanded the Alaskan National Guard.” That’s not to say there weren’t any, because there ARE, but the guy couldn’t recount them all off the top of his head. They just want the “I don’t know” so they can spread that the McCain campaign doesn’t even know their own pick.
Enoxo on September 3, 2008 at 5:16 PM

Noonan had lost a lot of credibility with me over the past few months…her two-faced nonsense today wiped out the last ounce of respect I had for her.
doubleplusundead on September 3, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Yes, I get the sense from reading and listening to the media that the Mayor of Wasilla is being treated just like any candidate who has several children and is running for high office. Why, if it were not for HotAir and NRO, I would not even know she is a woman. (Sarcasm off)
I hope the Whitman sampler we have been subjected to is her attempt to “move along” from the whole woman candidate thing. (Not quite managing it, but willing to let it go.)
The Noonan thing? What is it with these people? Can’t we simply like a candidate we think has some integrity, smarts, and just happens to come across as authentic?
Dang, we’ve been begging for a real human being as a candidate for a long time now. We got one! Happens she’s a woman. That’s nice and not taking anything from her, but I like her because I believe she actually means what she says. I’m not blinded or “obamafied” by her – just hoping that indeed she is different fronm what we’ve had in the past.
Honestly, I don’t know why McCain picked her, but I do see why most of us like her. If he picked her for the wrong reasons – fine. We are not quite as dumb or blinded as some of our more learned Conservative fellows (and ladies) think we are.
kybowexar on September 3, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Meg is clueless. Too bad. Good thing she doesn’t have covetous eyes on elective office in Texas.

Wow… the National Enquirer now officially has more credibility than any of the MSM networks (Edwards story) and about as much class as CNN.
Seriously, what kind of news organization airs BS clips like that? Are they officially admitted defeat to YouTube for news (where there was a voice-over version of the same clip over the weekend)?
How do we go about getting CNN off the air?

I really haven’t seen any sexism in the coverage, says … Meg Whitman
Wrong, wrong, wrong! Let’s leave looks and everything out of this. We complain about how the media treats Palin then the moment someone doesn’t get enthused about her we denounce her on her looks? Bad bad form.
Obviously she’s wrong about the no sexism in the attacks bit but that doesn’t give us free reign to do something just as sexist.

I won’t watch the “wanderin’ eyes clip.” That is starting to get rediculous. Besides, with a wife like Cindy McCain, I don’t think Big John’s eyes need to wander too far.
Mallard T. Drake on September 3, 2008 at 5:26 PM
And what article would that be? Would it be the one from today where she wrote of the Palin pick:
So where does her off-the-mike comment contradict this? Reread the article if you’re confused. Noonan’s position essentially seems to me to be cautious optimism about Palin. If she’s cautiously optimistic I wouldn’t expect her to hold the firm position that McCain picked the most qualified candidate.
Now certainly she detests with strong language the idea of a narrative candidate and that issue isn’t covered in her piece one way or the other. I suppose you could argue a sin of omission on her part, but other than that I don’t see a contradiction.

One of the first videos I saw of Governor Palin was her advising women not to whine about being treated in a sexist manner, but to work harder.
I liked her approach.
Therefore, I see Meg Whitman’s response in this interview as being appropriate.
Let the readers and viewers across America decide how Governor Palin is being treated by the media. Whether they call it sexism or elitism or liberalism, I think they’ll see the media as outrageously biased.
Work harder. No whining.

Gov. Palin deserves the opportunity to serve America to her best abilities.
DNC: Oh, and did we mention, she’s female (and white)?
The media’s bias has less to do with Palin being a woman? This attack began on Palin, the MOTHER OF A CHILD WITH NEEDS. Until men gestate, pregnancy remains the elite condition of womanhood. Bearing a child is a woman’s issue. “Forgetting” the horrible attacks on Sarah Palin because her daughter provides new fresh meat for the DNC SLAUGHTERHOUSE for media consumption is not going to be tolerated by American voters, particularly women, nor should it be dismissed by Palin’s and RNC attorneys who should collect all the data substantiating the publicity. Document those who instigated lies into the public forum, and those who enabled and augmented the dispursement of lies.
Whitman on Palin: “And she should tell us her personal story”! “I think it’s fair”! I don’t think there really has been any sexism”!
Whitman on Whitman: I joined McCain’s campaign in February. Yes, I, too, was considered to be McCain’s Vice President. I am honored with myself, still. Yes, I too, have a political future ahead of me.
Whitman must be an extraordinary person with huge talents. She certainly is a successful veteran of the 1970 movement of women into college graduation and professional careers. NOW she’s died in the wool, a feminist who “sacrificed” everything necessary to get where she is. And she’ll be damned if she’s going to allow, let alone help some other female get what Whitman set out to have for herself.
Remaining aloof is the typical upper crust way of saying “whatever” so long as it’s not herself at risk. No surprise, that’s business as usual. Since it’s business as usual, there’s plotting, all the more cool tone from the feminist.
Economically insulated, cruel and “smart” indifferent people witness and tolerate abuse. After the stoning and the sacrifice of the scape goat, the grand finale features the whipping boy. Step right up, folks, step right up. Buy your tickets for the DNC extravaganza.
The DNC forgot what people really think about public humiliations of children. In the back of everyone’s mind, the thought occurs; if they can hurt her, I’m next. Americans don’t put up with abuse.
maverick muse on September 3, 2008 at 6:04 PM

McCain looks down and there is a sexual reference.
Clinton uses cigars to pleasure an intern, and that is considered outside of his presidential performance.
Hening on September 3, 2008 at 6:18 PM
Regarding the Slate article, I am beginning to think that the defence is going in the wrong direction. It’s fine to say that other politicians and former politicians have had, or are having, things swept under the rug…but the attacks aren’t coming from them. they are coming from the Andrea Mitchell’s, Sally Quinn’s and John Roberts’ of the world.
I don’t like the idea of it, but there is a side of me that would like to respond to a question from Andea Mitchell with a question about HER family life. What about the family skeletons of John Roberts, or Olbermann or all the rest?
Maybe fight fire with fire.
