Video: Gingrich rips the media for belittling Palin’s achievements

posted at 8:23 am on September 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

Something to start the day off right, like a video version of a hearty breakfast. Jonah Goldberg’s correct that the talking point about leading the Alaska National Guard sounds lame, and to the extent Newt means Palin showed guts in taking on an incumbent governor, Barry O surely showed some too in challenging the Clinton machine that ruled the party as of last year. Righteous stuff otherwise, though. I only wish he’d thought to call out The One’s charming habit of demeaning Palin by referring to her as the mayor of Wasilla instead of the governor of Alaska. Perhaps she’ll return the compliment tonight by addressing him as the state senator from Chicago.

Color me shocked, too, that our modern-day Murrow didn’t seize the opportunity provided by the satellite hook-up to take Gingrich on. Exit question: Palin’s speech is only 13 and a half hours away. What time should we start drinking?

The entire right should turn the tables on all of the media the same way Speaker Gingrich just did.

It would be funny to watch them have to defend Hussein, further exposing their biased views, instead of conducting interviews, or in their case, interrogations.

O’Reily should ask him about this in interview.

I’ll say it again, the attacks on the front page of NYT’s and elsewhere on Palin, AFTER Obama publicly condemned this crap, was nothing more than him doing it behind the scenes and providing cover with the media. downright despicable.

The Democrats remind me of small children on a playground. Because of their immature intellect they are forced to compensate with extremely loud verbosity.

I used to think so, too. That is, that was my “tolerant” understanding of the Left, the Democrats (either/or).

No longer. Not after seeing and watching and reading what the Left exudes now for the past several years, and particularly in the last few months. The Left is not like a child, it is a terrorist effort upon the United States of America.

I mean that, quite seriously. The Left lies, spreads viscious rumors (regardless of facts), is about the same as, well, looters when there’s a storm going on — you can always count on the Left to ruin the merchandise, disregard morals, ethics, truth, standards, posted signs, requests and basic cultural expectations of decency.

After the despicable storiees and screed I’ve read recently from the Left (about anyone they target, Palin’s just the latest and most noticable), I would never equate the Left with any child or vulnerable human being, I do equate them with corruption and lack of most characteristics that maintain what is “human” about our species.

S on September 3, 2008 at 9:24 AM

Ron Allan wouldn’t counter Newt for two reasons. There were no accomplishments by Obama plus he was being shouted at in his ear piece to cut it short because the sound bite by Newt was damaging to leftist causes.

As far as NPR. Unless people are willing to put their own personal freedom on the line (possibly face jail time) and picket/protest vigorously at NPR sites around the country people won’t know or care and the funding will continue.

We are at war for the ideological heart and soul of this country. Yes, Jihadist can kill maim and disrupt, but the liberal left and the 4th estate of the MSM is as serious, if not worse, threat to all of us.

I just finished reading NewsBusters and am fuming. I donated to a candidate for the first time in my life on Friday, and I’m going to do it again as soon as I get home. We need to open up our checkbooks to this ticket and propel them to victory. If Obama wins you can expect to see these digusting tactics used by the media in every campgin to come.

BadgerHawk on September 3, 2008 at 9:26 AM

What’s sad is that this is an easy response and should have been the answer of every Republican analyst over the past several days as this question has been asked over and over and over again. Yes, Newt delivered it devastatingly well, but it’s not like it’s rocket science to point out that there’s a world of difference between actually doing stuff and just talking and writing about doing stuff.

aero on September 3, 2008 at 8:46 AM

Well what made Newt’s dig so harsh that is tpooked the newsie into silence was:

“real mayor”

“real governor”

See Barry prides himself on “I’m a community activist dammnit” well nobody elects a community activist and you pretty much get to stay until you are either arrested or quit. Barry preens as though he were some sort of Mayor of Chicago…well Barry I’ve met the mayor of chicago* and you sir are no Daley you work for him.

*The Mayor of Chicago arguably has a more trying job qualifying him for the Presidency than the One does right now and I include Maverick! and Biden in that…Chicago Mayor is a huge thing any Mayor is a big thing in terms of saying “I pushed this, I foght this” I can’t recall a single time Barry single-handedly won a floor fight to pass some unpalatable piece of legislation for the nation over the wishes of 40+ US Senators

He also took the knee and raised it to the balls of “I was a State Senator damnit!”….Barry his a good portion of the time as a State Senator as he in essence was trying not to leave a paper trail to enrage the rural Illinois voter into fighting him tooth and nail. Real executives don’t get to pass bills by shrugging non-stop. Barry being weasely does not mean he is a leader it means he is a mandarin.

“Present” is not a political activity that inspires people no matter how hard they try to doll it up.

The newsie ran like hell and refused to confront Newt with anymore of his talking points because newt would have ate them up like Popeye eating the spinach can….

When confronted with talking points the best thing to do is run straight through them and at your target full bore.

Newt put on a clinic, we need MORE of that not less. If the newsie screws the pooch they get shrill and show they are in the can, if they get dumbfounded like Keef and his front-man last night they just gave YOU an opening for the undecideds to see YOUR talking points.

regards,
sven

Does MSNBC even dispute its over-the-top bias anymore? I never watch that station, nor do I check their website. However, after seeing much of the coverage of the DNC and reading the commentary about it and its events, I thought that I would check out what they are doing over there in regards to covering the RNC. What I found was that MSNBC seemed to be the opposition, making it a point to counter every assertion or comment made by the Republicans. Is this a “news” organization or a liberal advocacy group? I now know why those who watch MSNBC or CNN for news regard FOX News as a Conservative News organization. Propoganda works. This all just reminds me how scary the Fairness Doctrine would be, since a “news” organization like MSNBC would be out there advocating liberal ideals and candidates while muzzling the only real balance out there. Marxism is coming, I fear.

I will be the first to admit that I am no McCain fan, as I have stated on this forum in the past. I am still no McCain fan. But. . . I found it both heartwarming and stirring when Sarah Palin was announced and accepted the VP slot for his campaign. I am rooting for her and expect to see her hit a grand slam tonight with her speech. She seems to be a genuine person of principle and no-nonsense government (translated less government). That is what qualifies her, along with being governor of my state of residence, to be the VP and potentially the President. I would much rather have an inexperienced person of solid unwavering principle as President that a skilled, experienced politician. Go Sarah – Give them hell.

With any luck, her speech tonight will cause Keith Olbermann to explode.

King of the Britons on September 3, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Factor Exclusive- Billy O’Reilly give Obama a forum for the “political malpractice” that his campaign condemns.

Maybe yes, maybe no. It’s entirely possible that Bill intends to sandbag him by asking the tough questions about Ayers, about Wright, about Rezko, about his absolute lack of any executive experience. If so, then he will have redeemed himself.

On the other hand, if BOR lobs nothing but Larry King softball questions, he will have outed himself as a media whore and will see his ratings begin to decline.

I suppose we’ll find out on Thrusday nite.

Right you are! The Left, like I wrote, is attempting to generate as much negative attention AWAY from Obama. That’s what this attack on Palin is all about — they can’t defend Barack Obama because they won’t look at the guy squarely and require reliable information from the man.

If Barack Obama had substance, he would not NEED all this overkill from the media and other Left. He’d be being accepted with enthusiasm (not hysteria, not cultist worship, but general enthusiasm) and would not NEED all this over compensation from the Left.

Everyone on the Right (and in the Moderate Middle) should be writing a blog, making comments everywhere and anywhere, talking to neighbors, writing to sites and sources and doing whatever is reaonable to just keep the pressure on the issue of Obama – who, when examined even modestly, comes up with a giant zero.

Yep.

As a former Liberal, I recognized that fact as soon as they turned-tail on Iraq back in 2003.

The mistake the Bush Administration made, was treating their treason as “honest dissent”.

The Left HATES this country and LOATHES the military.

This point cannot be made often enough.

Hear, hear! If I may amplify your remarks: this election is a battle for the future of our republic and we are faced with two very stark, very different paths that diverge after November 4.

The Liberal Left and the Drive-By media, together with their hatchet-men in the blogosphere constitute a fifth column that eagerly anticipates the abolition of the republic and the creation of a national socialist state. They have declared war on the rest of America. This time has come to defeat them and defeat them soundly.

Liberalism must be destroyed and in this war we cannot afford to take prisoners.

ManlyRash on September 3, 2008 at 9:35 AM

Turn the Libtard news people on their heads by asking pointed questions about their biased coverage, and demand answers! Newt took off the kid gloves for a moment; this is exactly what we have been waiting for. Fred did the same with his speech last night, calling it like it is.

Do this Republicans, and you will fire-up the base beyond your wildest dreams!

The ol’ country Girl was watching the convention last nigh, the NBC version of it. She is a new Palin fan and new registered Independent (I think). I wandered into the room and asked her why she was watching NBC and she told me that was the only channel it was on, and she wanted to watch it live (NBC carries her soap opera and it has been her default channel). I told her we had cable and it was on many channels. NBC had an interview of Laura Bush. I told her Fred Thompson was speaking and she told me he wasn’t. I reached over and grabbed the control and randomly switched channels – there was Fred speaking. I then reiterated to her that NBC was the propaganda arm of the DNC and were trying to distract her from anyone who was critical of Obama. The ol’ country girl, as a recently dis-frocked Democrat had another life lesson.

I’m new here. Are we supposed to start drinking because we’re worried or is that just a healthy dose of pessimism. I often try to expect the worst, so that anything above that is gravy. Regarding the National Guard, Arizona Governor Napolitano in the interview she did with Palin said that the National Guard is a demanding responsibility and she by no means made it sound trivial. I think she knows more then Jonah on this score, no offense to Jonah.

But she listed the responsibilities, and it was nothing to sneeze at. She, a democrat.

Consider that the more hysterical and shrill the MSM is leading up to tonight’s speech, the more they are lowering the expectations for it. If Palin gives a good speech directly to the American people tonight, she will now look even more impressive and the MSM will look even more partisan.

The MSM is not merely biased, but so biased that it is potentially counter-productive to their favored candidate.

General Electric; Viacom; Disney; Westinghouse; Time-Warner… Hurt them where it hurts; cut off the money trail best we can.

Keemo on September 3, 2008 at 9:47 AM

I have a nervous excitement about the speech tonight. She acutally didn’t solidify my plans to vote for McCain. When you compare McCain and Obama on the issues, I find it hard to believe that a rational person could vote for the policies that Obama is espousing. I’m glad the Palin pick brought some excitement to the base because McCain needs the grassroots get out the vote machine that the base can provide when they are excited about a candidacy.

I must say that it takes quite a lot for me to be offended by the actions of anyone, but the past few days have really tested my patience with the character of the Left. It’s really been despicable how they’ve gone after the Governor.

I have a really strong hope that she shows the American people that she has the fight in her to stand up against attacks. She will do herself a lot of good by being firm but fair with the media.

Plus, I’d love to see Allah push the Sarahcuda nickname after she skewers everyone from Barack to Biden to Pelosi and to that lazy mofo on the couch that won’t get off his butt and get a job.

Of the last 5 presidents, 4 were governors, none were senators. You have to go back to Ford to find a senator, and he never won executive office on his own.

Bush the younger – governor
Clinton – governor
Bush the elder – executive branch experience
Reagan – governor
Carter – governor
Ford – senator

Gnosis on September 3, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Many are saying forget the national guard, there is a reason they keep that in the forefront. Alaska is just three icebergs away from Russia. Alaska is a backdoor to Russia, the National Guard up there is more sophisticated then most. The military installations in Alaska is our first defense. They are waiting for the debate, when Palin can say, “I have stood by our Coasties, and National Guard, starring down the Russians…have you? I have forced the Ruskies off of our fishing grounds and defended our resources against an aggressor, have you?”
As Governor, she knows details about our missile defense that few in the senate would know. Every Governor knows and has inspected the military systems in their state, and Alaska has some of the most sophisticated in the world.
This will come out in the debates, Biden will look like an insider with foreign experience, against an outsider with foreign and diplomatic, and military experience.

I guess it really is about ratings because he had to scoop Olbermann who’s got Obama on Monday (or is that not a scoop, has he been there before?)

Moxie on September 3, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Any woman who got pregnant before marriage or had a daughter that did should be OUTRAGED that this is going on. If they aren’t, they are brain dead libs.

Sarah Palin should come out and SCREAM..”BRING IT!”

GoodBoy on September 3, 2008 at 10:59 AM

Probably just as well Olberman is in New York. Wouldn’t look good for a Republican delegate to give him a wedgie on national TV. Especially after Newt just made a fool of him. That insipid smirk is what the left loves: the old junior high school tactic of mocking when words fail. That’s why they have made John Stewart the most trusted man in America.

snaggletoothie on September 3, 2008 at 10:59 AM

Notice that the media person who was asked Speaker Gingrich one question and received the appropriate response (Point Counter Point) and when requested to provide a response it was duh!!!, back to somebody to get me out of this place.

Unfortunately, who do they go to? Mr. Obribermen who had a smirk on his face, like a Chesier Cat and we know that it too was a figment of Alice’s imagination.

The Dems are in such trouble that they are going to do anything to win that they will bury themselves in hypocrisy. Because the American Public is feed up and they are not going to take it anymore.

MSGTAS on September 3, 2008 at 11:04 AM

How much does anyone want to bet that poor MSNBC floor reporter went deaf in one ear from the guy who was screaming in his earpiece to cut Newt off.

Here’s the problem though. I think it was Reagan that astutely said something to the effect that you need the media. Sure, you can hate them, but you’ve got to use them to your advantage.

Reagan was the master at this. He’s smile sweetly, call them by their first names, ask about their kids then put out his message right over their heads.

That said, I would have sent Newt a fruit basket if he had punched the guy.

Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 11:06 AM

O’Reilly will sit there and softball Obama. Guarantee it.

Was a time, way way back, when O’Reilly was hard-hitting. In the past few years he has become more and more about himself and his ratings than any sort of honest broker.

I’ve read his books. While there are a few gems in them, they are basically of poor quality overall. Harvard educated, too. And he writes like a high school sophomore.

If Obama gets a pass from O’Reilly, Fox News is toast. Fox and Friends being the only real hard hitting Fox program remaining on their line-up.

coldwarrior on September 3, 2008 at 11:13 AM

Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 11:06 AM –

Reagan, as I remember him, used the media. He also was unafraid to go over their heads, and that of Congress, to talk directly to Americans in their homes. No spin. No commentators trying to frame it all. Direct communication with the folks who really counted — us.

The McCain/Palin campaign needs to get some blocks of TV time for some real fire-side chats with America…face to face with America…one issue at a time, and talk to America directly.

Humanize their side of the campaign.

Let us see them for who they are, what they believe in, their record of accomplishment, let America see them as real people, which they are.

This is playing to the strengths of the McCain/Palin ticket…real people…not some built from the ground up bunch of poliical hacks like Obama and Biden.

coldwarrior on September 3, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Oh Snap! MSNBC got pwned!!!
Seriously though, Newt brought up great points. The media needs to be put in their place otherwise they’ll perpetuate their lies. Notice how he backed out of the conversation when confronted? Most liberals will do that…

bentman78 on September 3, 2008 at 11:26 AM

…”there are some openings”…yes, Olby is correct–even though his body language said otherwise. It’s amazing that they allowed him to cover the Repub Convention. what’s more amazing is that he didn’t jump down there and scream at Newt.
Being in charge of the national guard is a “lame” qualification…hmmmm. It’s still more than Barry has been in charge of. Misogyny runs very deep indeed.

He didn’t have any answers for Newt and I doubt that Olby had any either. Is there a clip of Olby filling in the ‘openings’?

Christine on September 3, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Color me shocked, too, that our modern-day Murrow didn’t seize the opportunity provided by the satellite hook-up to take Gingrich on.

Keith would need stones larger than his hazelnuts to take the opportunity to question Newt.

Mallard T. Drake on September 3, 2008 at 11:45 AM

Now that’s the stuff I like to see! Righteous anger beats unhinged derangement any day.

MirCat on September 3, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Yesssss Newt! Finally someone calls the media out and backs them up against the wall. They should do this each and every time. Love it!!!

That’s right, “your not going to argue the case”…..punk!

nottakingsides on September 3, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Thanks AP. . .Thanks a lot. You suckered me into
actually listening to Mad Olbie at the end of that clip.

“Newt Rocks”

Texyank on September 3, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Go Newt. It’s nice to see Republicans responding like they have a set.

Exit answer… No better time then the present?

@ntif@n on September 3, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Keep it up Olberman…soon your only viewers will be those violent mental midgets who are looting and pillaging the properties of the poor people of St. Paul and wherever else they happen to flock to…like locusts. MSNBC execs are clearly either insane or evil, since they willingly misinform their viewers and by airing sensationlistic claptrap to further dumb down American…not to mention a few extra bucks.

Nastaran on September 3, 2008 at 12:33 PM

I have three words for you Newt. Fab-u-lous! You were right on Huckabee too.

apacalyps on September 3, 2008 at 12:37 PM

The GREATEST clip today!!! NEWT taking on PMSNBC head to head. The look on KEITHY’S FACE priceless. Ol’ KEITHY does not want to tangle with NEWT. There wouldn’t be enough big chunks left to bury… PRICELESS!!!!

There is NO WAY that Olberman wants to take on Gingrich. It would be like a mediocre high school football team challenging the New York Giants. Olberman is an intellectual lightweight.

lionheart on September 3, 2008 at 2:05 PM

If Olby is the one with Restless Leg Syndrome, why is that thrill always going up Matthews’ leg?

thats right bathtub boy just grin and fade to black . I love it rip them a new one Newt.

Mojack420 on September 3, 2008 at 2:21 PM

I only wish he’d thought to call out The One’s charming habit of demeaning Palin by referring to her as the mayor of Wasilla instead of the governor of Alaska. Perhaps she’ll return the compliment tonight by addressing him as the state senator from Chicago.

No, she should call Obama the ‘community organizer from Chicago’, and point out that Obama bears responsibilitu for the scurrilous attacks on her family for his condesending reference to a sitting governor.

The fake practiced outrage of Obama that “families are off limits” is just a wink to slanderers when combined with such clear disrespect for women.

Right_of_Attila on September 3, 2008 at 2:29 PM

Bravo Newt . . . kick them in the groin.

The coincidence is too great. I was just watching this video and now feel I have to share.

mikeyboss on September 3, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Oh, and “there were some openings” in Newt’s argument. Let’s talk about them when he is no longer on air to respond.

“not going to argue the case”?

how could you?!? twerp–working for another twerp; why even include garbage from that show; almost no viewership; rendered almost completely irrelevant to the electorate; on a network that has lost virtually all credibility; what’s the point, anymore?

urbancenturion on September 3, 2008 at 3:18 PM

What time should we start drinking? – Allah

I don’t drink when I shoot. Got my ammo ready for making some noise…

k, just kidding, it’s against covenants, but I would if I was in Alaska…

kirkill on September 3, 2008 at 3:30 PM

Olberman only has people that agree with him on his show. He’s an A #1 extra large douche bag.

kirkill on September 3, 2008 at 3:31 PM

For God’s sake AP……’the one’ should be praised coz he took on the Clinton’s? It is starting to reek of your very own bias over here and it sometimes feels like I have stumbled into Kos by mistake. Thank heaven for Ed…thank you Ed…he still offers the sort of commentary I have always come to this site to find. Are you actively and knowingly trying to drive away your readers? This is getting beyond stupid……where is MM to add some guidance?
