Time preview: “A relatively short, plainspoken address in the voice of an ordinary working mom”; Update: Working ’round the clock

For what it’s worth, since so many people are posting speech wishlists today.
Palin has been sequestered for days with former Bush Administration speechwriter Matthew Scully, among other wordsmiths, wonks and speech coaches, boning up on policy and crafting her text. She is said to be keenly aware, as one leading Republican noted, that an untested candidate, dropped into the last weeks of a close race, can sink a campaign in a few disastrous sentences.
One knowledgeable source told TIME that Palin plans to deliver a relatively short, plainspoken address in the voice of an ordinary working mom. She’ll talk about challenging old-boy networks — oil companies, Alaska’s corrupt GOP establishment — and learning to lead. Raising five kids while making a career won’t necessarily earn you an invitation to the Council on Foreign Relations, but it does instill organization and discipline. That’s what Palin brings to the table, the source said.
For once, like Ace, I think a long wonky speech would be all to the good. The only way she can blow this realistically is if she moms it up too much and comes off as asking people to vote for her simply because she’s so gosh-darned down to earth. Too much cutesy-poo moose stuff, too much self-congratulation about having a Blackberry in one hand and a breast pump in the other, too much forced back-patting of Hillary will make for a lame, smelly identity politics stew. A friend at the convention hears through the grapevine that she’s going to knock Obama over the bitter clinginess of small-town voters, but whether that’s just one throwaway laugh line or something more extended is unclear. I’d love it if she came out and was all business on policy from the word go, without even acknowledging the personal drama and press viciousness. It’d be a total clusterfark for the media given how they’ve tried to paint her as an unserious rube; if she walked out and started dialing in on Iran or the surge like Condi Rice, it’d instantly remake her image.
Sounds like plenty of promising “maverick” material is in the mix, though. Exit question: How short is unacceptably short? Fifteen minutes? Part of the point here is simply to show she has enough to say to fill out a reasonably lengthy speech.
Update: Cross them fingers.
First, Palin wants to leave no question about which ticket has a better hold on the economy.
Palin will emphasize her experience and understanding of the energy economy and talk about how Alaska is the “intersection of global energy markets and domestic production.” Here, she’ll try to combat questions regarding her experience.
Palin will also pit John McCain against Barack Obama, making the case for the Arizona senator on the basis of policy and character.
“After she delivers these lines, McCain’s decision to choose her will be much more obvious,” said the aide who has been working with her on the speech.
Finally, Palin will introduce herself to voters as a likable, funny and smart person.
“Every one in the staff has fallen in love with her,” insisted this aide.

Quick question, sort of OT (my apologies)…
Did the McCain’s adopt a child or two? I see a female standing on the tarmac who in no way appears biologically related to anyone else standing for a family photo.

Thinking about it some more — I was told she likes to write her won speeches. I hope this is her speech, and not some insider hack’s. I think she has already proven she knows what she is doing, and she should just be allowed to do what she does best. Be yourself, Sarah.

Preview of what Governor Palin should say:
introduction. I proudly accept your nomination!
these are challenging times, especially in the economy, on accountability, and in foreign affairs. We need compassionate leadership with good experience and judgement
remarks about Sen. McCain
short biographical sketch of Governor Palin, highlighting tough decisions made and reform achievements. a couple of laugh lines
Personal note to media: “Leave my daughter alone.”
Attacking the angry left for raising taxes, Obama not having any achievements. Annenberg Challenge flop. Community organizer but his “organizer” neighborhood is still in desperate shape, not letting kids go to the school of choice, trying to end secret ballots to unionize, and greenlighting Iran, abortion clinics in the inner cities, hopeless liberal naivtee. A couple of laugh lines.
Attack Biden’s foreign policy judgement. Yet even he has misgivings about the top of the Dem ticket
Put our country first. Drilling, nuclear energy, energy independence, lower taxes, strong military, spend education dollars more intelligently, fix the health insurance market so families can get health care when they need it. Accountability in government. Accountability, accountability, accountability.
Challenging times. Russia. North Korea. Iran. China. Cuba. Venezuela. We need a realistic world view and we need to put our country’s values first. We always look to negotiate first, but we know from history that naive ideas about negotiation will lead to less security, not more. Freedom and democracy will never bend its knee to the tyrant’s rod. The best of America comes out when we put party second, and country first.
We need change. Washington should work for the people, not the other way around.

Her first words should be (after the applause dies down)
DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW
then stand back and let the delegates scream themselves hoarse.
Please dear Gov. Palin don’t screech. Don’t try to shout over the howling mob….wait…let them celebrate your success. Let them share in your accomplishments…
Then tell the elite how its going to be, how we are taking back our country.
Please God, let her demonstrate wisdom, for all to see.
Amen.

It will be considered successful IMO if it pushes back and shuts up the opposition long enough to get her back out onto the campaign trail. As Rudy said, give her a chance to give her speech and grant some interviews.
Again IMO the debates will be the clincher for McCain/Palin. Make sure you tell everyone you know to watch the debates!
Mr_Magoo on September 3, 2008 at 3:07 PM
The Damiano Plan… (like anyone listens to me)
1. Bio Video- cover the family, upbringing, family, kids, political rise, and the accomplishments (reform, energy, etc)
2. Speech
- DO NOT MENTION HILLARY ANYMORE!!! People can put that together themselves and that ground has been trod (and boo’d the second time around)
- Touch up the finer points of bio WITH subtle contrasts to Hair Plugs and Barry.
- Move on to framing the VP job and why you’ll kick as at it. Preside over senate (reform, energy, ethics), Represent that nation, Hold mirror under John’s nose, etc.
- Lightly touch some women’s issues… stress LIGHTLY. Again, the women don’t need it spelled out that you have a vagina. The 5 kids prove that
- Move on to something inspirational- goals for 4 years and beyond. What’s in in for American’s from VP Palin.
- Kick Obama/ Biden in the nutz
- Kick the media in the nutz
- Goodnight
Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 3:07 PM
As long as Palin keeps Obama talking about having more experience then a VP candidate, the better.
How bad does that look for Obama to actually have to address a VP candidate, over a Presidential candidate? That just makes him look less Presidential and more ignorant then he already does.
I dont know who is running McCain’s campaign, but they have taken it to Obama over the last month.
They need to keep Obama talking about Palin, b/c that fact alone means Obama has no experience when he has to keep comparing his experience to a VP candidate, instead of a P candidate.
TheHat on September 3, 2008 at 3:08 PM
My advice, everybody tune in tonight and judge for yourself. No matter what she does it will be judged through the jaundiced eyes of the already wounded animal known as “The Media”. Maybe Sarah will do the humane thing and put them out of their misery but not likely.
I am sure the majority of the tone of pundits tonight right after the speech and tomorrow will be along the lines of, “to deflect attention away from ______,” and “what is important to note is what she didn’t say”, and as always the infamous “some will say she failed to connect with ______”.
Watch it for yourself and you be the judge.
Just A Grunt on September 3, 2008 at 3:08 PM
I was thinking that myself this morning while watching the news. Team O would love it if they could sway the argument in that direction. It would be the Grand Slam of deflections! Hope (it works) and Change (the subject)!
Mr_Magoo on September 3, 2008 at 3:09 PM
I agree that “Super Mom” is not the route to go. But I don’t think wonky is good either.
Attack Obama. Attack him for being part of a big city Chicago political machine. And talk about how “I’m just a small town country gal” but that in small towns we learn that you have to stand up against corruption, not just look away.
Sackett on September 3, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Hey MSM, yeah this is Palin,
listen, I think that bar is still a little to high for a poor oh hick woman like me, can you help me lower it a little more? Oh you can. Thanks you are really a dear.
Russell H. on September 3, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Agreed. Mrs. Magoo leans to Obama (it’s a long story and she hates Biden so I’m still hopeful) so we made a deal to watch both major speeches and the debates – and then make an informed decison based on what the candidates say not what the media wants to show us.
Mr_Magoo on September 3, 2008 at 3:12 PM
The speech will not be “the unexpected” any more than her pick was (that’s people buying the MSM line).
According to Time’s source, she’s going to talk about her Mavericky, reform accomplishments, which makes perfect sense. Even the mopes at The Corner have figured out that this RNCC is stressing reform, not national security. McCain picked Palin for that reform cred, and talking about what’s she’s actually done accomplishes several tasks.
It implicitly draws the comparison with Obama’s lack of accomplishments.
It also shows her to be an effective governor/leader, which at this stage is more important than a display of wonkery written by fmr Bushies (which is how the MSM would spin that).
For that matter, discussing her accomplishments personalizes the speech, which will make it more effective with the mushy middle than some policy seminar that would seem abstract to them, perhaps even trying too hard.
I know AP wonders whether Palin is really ready to be POTUS if need be, but the fact is that no one in this race is truly ready for the job on Day One. Any of them will be getting plenty of help with the job, but that doesn’t have to be on display tonight. Camp McCain wants to show that Palin has taken on the status quo successfully (unlike BO) and I’m fairly sure they will be successful in doing so tonight.

They adopted a girl from an orphanage in Bangladesh (I believe) that had a cleft palate. Mother Theresa asked Cindy McCain to take her and another girl (which was adopted by a friend of the McCain’s). I believe she actually brought the girl home without discussing it with John first. That must have been a bit of a “surprise”….but, from all accounts, a surprise that they all consider a great blessing.
JadeNYU on September 3, 2008 at 3:14 PM
She should walk out on stage with a high powered rifle in one hand and in the other, a leash leading a grizzle bear
PappaMac on September 3, 2008 at 3:14 PM
If she is to wear the crown, she needs to knock the media and Obama out, take the fake presidential crown from MSNBC off his head, stomp on it, then walk off the stage wearing the real one from the voters.
econavenger on September 3, 2008 at 3:17 PM

My only criticism of Palin is that she needs some voice lessons. Thatcher once had a girly voice, but learned to lower and solidify it. I sometimes find Palin’s voice abrasive when she’s forcing words out over the top of hubbub.

I sure hope it is more. I’d like to see her knock Obama for his “former mayor” remark and cast it as out of touch and uninformed even two days after hearing she’ll be on the ticket. A nice rhetorical wind-up that, maybe Obama misjudged the competence of his advisers to keep him briefed properly would really get the house roaring.
Dusty on September 3, 2008 at 3:24 PM
True dat.
BacaDog on September 3, 2008 at 3:24 PM
They don’t need to move back to biography. I’ve heard her talk about Alaska and the energy economy. She’s comfortable and knowledgeable. She needs to talk substantively about the intersection between a broken politics and the lack of real progress on a number of pressing issues, including energy. She needs to talk about how she stood down her own State party establishment because things weren’t getting done for the people of Alaska. She came up through local government, she saw problems, and she didn’t back down or settle for imperfection just because the people causing the trouble had (R)s after their names. She needs to emphasize her facility with community issues at the state and local level; how she speaks the language. How she’s worked with a legislature, balancing priorities.
The speech should be mostly, if not all, about reform.
Let others draw the contrasts* between her and Obama, who has never stood up to a single traditional Democrat interest group anyone could name.
______
* Just occurred to me — someone should ask Obama whether seeing someone rise up from PTA through local government to Statewide office isn’t exactly the kind of outcome “community organizers” like to promote!

I’ll try to help. I believe that John and Cindy McCain have four kids: a son who graduated from the Naval Academy; a 20-something daughter who you see on the campaign trail; a son who’s in his late teens or early 20s and who’s in the armed services; and an adopted daughter, who you have in mind.
McCain and his first wife did not have any children, but McCain adopted two (or three) children whom his wife brought to their marriage from a previous marriage. Two children are sons (one working in Cindy’s distributorship, I think) and maybe a daughter.
I’m happy to be corrected.

Palin vs Obama
The speech needs to address this by exposing him as a wannabe naked emperor and elevating herself above him in direct comparison.
If the speech is a defensive apologetic “Gosh darnit, I’m good enough to be VP I would think, I’ve done some pretty cool stuff,” then it’s charming maybe but not nearly enough to win. She needs to land fatal mocking blows on her rookie opponent and his jr high media, and she has the global spotlight to do it.

She should go with what she knows. Speak from her principles, and to issues in the same way she spoke to them as Gov of AK. Different issues, still an executive position.
I don’t know why Obama gets more respect than Palin. Is it because he’s black, or a man, or gives a good speech? Being a Gov for a couple of years is much more experience than being a Senator for a couple of years. She made real decisions that mattered, and made things happen. As far as experience goes, Obama is a nobody.

I hope she cools it on the mom stuff. And, since it’s abundantly clear that the evangelicals are on board, I hope she cools it on the RTL stuff too. The image she should try to conjure in voters’ minds is something along the lines of “Mr. Smith goes to Washington.”
Personally, I’ll be trying to get an inkling of what kind of a conservative she is. Does she have the muddied sensibilities of Mike Huckabee, or the doctrinal coherence and confidence of Dick Cheney? Or, my greatest fear, is she some sort of Jesse Ventura of the Klondike?

There will be NO good words from any media tonight. Not even a peep about a nice hairdo…. nothing good. Regardless of her actual speech, coverage tonight and tomorrow will be as bad as it can get. Then, given time to parse her words more thoroughly and look at her record for things to distort, another wave of really bad coverage will begin. Keep your chin up and prepare for it.
I’m sure the McCain campaign is fully aware of this new onslaught and is prepared to deal with it. We have two months until the election and the McCain campaign has hardly taken a swing at “the One”. The lefty loons combined with the Gaffe Machine Duet coming in those two months will lay all of the necessary groundwork for the devastating counter attack.
The real fights will begin when the debates are held… it will be much more difficult for the media to hide or distort those results.

If she comes out and is simply Sarah Palin she will beat Andrew Sullivan’s butt-buddies like a drum.
If you remember that was the thing about Ronald Reagan. He was one of us and he was authentic. He was an intellectual and a moral giant and a true Conservative.
That’s all Palin has to be. Just herself. If she is one of us and authentic and smart and Conservative, she will live for a long time in history.
I suspect she’s all that and more.
My point is that she does not have to deliver the speech that YOU think is perfect. She has to be herself and what she is has to be what we need at this point in history. So, when it comes to the kind of speech she delivers, give it a rest and give her a chance.

A little jujitsu on Obama would be nice too. Maybe a play on his line that “they say I need more seasoning…so they can beat the hope out of me.” Something like “they say I need more experience….I guess they want more time to try to make up more lies about my family or more slanders about Alaska.”
And damiano had this one – “You know the other side is coming after me. You know what they are going to say….she doesn’t look like all those other Vice Presidents..she comes from a small town in a state far away…she talks a little funny…she has too many kids…and did you know she’s a WOMAN?”

Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 4:07 PM
Sarah Palin is not going to address any of the media drama of this past week. She will acknowledge her family as all candidates do. Do you honestly think she is going to embarrass her daughter and future son-in-law? No. Having said that, I do desperately feel for the young people when that camera pans on them tonight. Nobody should have to endure that.
Palin will accept the nomination, talk about herself and her approach to policy, talk about her vision and love for America, wants she wants the future to look like. At least, that would be my advice.
BigD on September 3, 2008 at 4:09 PM
On the contrary: if she won’t defend her daughter, how can voters know she’ll defend them? Besides, when the democrats have behaved so blatantly hypocritically, why not (briefly) point it out?
This smearing needs to be stopped, and if a man steps forward to defend her it will put her right back in the “little woman” role.
She needs to come out strongly and stop it; and the way to do that is to point out how misogynistic the comments really are.
But it can’t be the main body of the speech. It needs to be parenthetic, then left behind and spoken of no more.

“I appreciate what the rabid mainstream media is trying to do in teaching my family the famous Obama moral lesson that choosing life for a child leads to nothing but punishment for mothers, but with all due respect, go eat moose dung. You should all be fired for sheer stupidity, never mind that you’re all cowardly pathetic punks. Go pick on someone who won’t return fire and take you out.
“As for Barack Obama, sweetie, the next time you try to compare your airball record to my actual achievements and disparage my ability to lead people, I’m going to kick your ass and show voters who’s got game, and who’s just a lame wannabe hater. Feel what I’m saying?”

Joe: Her daughter is going to be there. Do you really think she is going to put the spotlight on her daughter like that?
Would you???

I agree Joe, but this ain’t the speech for it. That is the stuff of press conferences, ads and the campaign trail. Even debates.
She could have done it yesterday and she can still deal with it tomorrow, but tonight she’s got to be her own woman and make everyone trust her on her own merits.

“For once, like Ace, I think a long wonky speech would be all to the good. It’d be a total clusterfark for the media given how they’ve tried to paint her as an unserious rube; if she walked out and started dialing in on Iran or the surge like Condi Rice, it’d instantly remake her image.”
Standing ovation, AP. Well said and 100% correct. I wish the party operators had this tattooed on their forearms. She needs to be herself but address hard issues with intelligence and not hype things up with a bunch of canned bulls**t which is probably what the party geniuses are pressing her to do.

A splinter hurts worst when you pull it out; but it won’t stop hurting until you do. Her daughter cannot POSSIBLY be more in the spotlight than she is right now. To be briefly mentioned by her mother as she stands up to the bullies and says LAY OFF is small potatoes compared to what has been done to her, and will CONTINUE to be done to her, if the bullies aren’t stopped.
Others may disagree; I stand by my original thoughts.
RegularJoe on September 3, 2008 at 4:18 PM
It would be so easy for her to do the “mom, apple pie” in a few words. She can simply say after having five children anything that the world throws after her is easy.
Also she can contrast herself and Joe Biden by saying there are two types of senators. There is John McCain who dedicated his 26 years in the Senate trying to make this a better country and then there is Joe Biden who has one year in the Senate and repeated it 32 times.
Jdripper on September 3, 2008 at 4:19 PM
I was hoping maybe she’d gut a moose right there on the podium.
Cicero43 on September 3, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Laughed hard at the visual of that one.
Could you imagine? She drags out a moose carcass, hacks out the heart, holds it up all dripping and gory and says, “MSM, you shouldn’t have come after my daughter”.
Bishop on September 3, 2008 at 4:20 PM
I think a short speech is right for the occasion. The media decided to make more of her than she really is. At the end of the day, she is just the VP pick. She needs to introduce herself to those in the country (read: TV audience) who doesn’t know who she is. Unless a button pops off her blouse all the attention tomorrow morning will be on McCain and that will be it for her until she debates Biden — who is increasingly becoming more and more mentally challenged.

Accompanied by rolling her neck and z-snapping…
fossten on September 3, 2008 at 4:26 PM
A moose didn’t do anything to deserve that. We should have more respect for the noble moose.
Now, if she did all that and used Campbell Brown instead of a Moose… now you’re on to sumthin’
Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 4:27 PM
Keep it simple Sarah. And don’t mention Obama’s virgin conception.

Allah, go back and watch the Kudlow interview. I’m all for setting expectations low, but you seem to be missing the essential essence of this lady. She’s a tiger in a hockey mom’s sweater.
DrW on September 3, 2008 at 4:29 PM
The speech will last fifteen minutes……………. the applause will last until the election.
Seven Percent Solution on September 3, 2008 at 4:34 PM
I want her to look directly into the camera and say; Senator Obama, I Sarah Palin am the GOVERNOR of the GREAT STATE of ALASKA! The executive experience that you Senator Obama bring to the table could barely fill a thimble compared to what I have achieved as the chief executive of the largest state in the United States of America……
winemkr on September 3, 2008 at 4:36 PM
I don’t see how she could bomb, she’s the center piece of this entire event at the moment.
Typhonsentra on September 3, 2008 at 4:45 PM
I want a lot of wonkery. Harvard School of Government wonkery. Stuff that makes your eyes water.
To be sure, show the independence/maverick streak. But connect the wonkery with reform.
The first image I want the public to get of her is that she’s a policy wonk. After that, everything is gravy.
Yummy, moose gravy.
