Time preview: “A relatively short, plainspoken address in the voice of an ordinary working mom”; Update: Working ’round the clock

posted at 2:33 pm on September 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

For what it’s worth, since so many people are posting speech wishlists today.

Palin has been sequestered for days with former Bush Administration speechwriter Matthew Scully, among other wordsmiths, wonks and speech coaches, boning up on policy and crafting her text. She is said to be keenly aware, as one leading Republican noted, that an untested candidate, dropped into the last weeks of a close race, can sink a campaign in a few disastrous sentences.

One knowledgeable source told TIME that Palin plans to deliver a relatively short, plainspoken address in the voice of an ordinary working mom. She’ll talk about challenging old-boy networks — oil companies, Alaska’s corrupt GOP establishment — and learning to lead. Raising five kids while making a career won’t necessarily earn you an invitation to the Council on Foreign Relations, but it does instill organization and discipline. That’s what Palin brings to the table, the source said.

For once, like Ace, I think a long wonky speech would be all to the good. The only way she can blow this realistically is if she moms it up too much and comes off as asking people to vote for her simply because she’s so gosh-darned down to earth. Too much cutesy-poo moose stuff, too much self-congratulation about having a Blackberry in one hand and a breast pump in the other, too much forced back-patting of Hillary will make for a lame, smelly identity politics stew. A friend at the convention hears through the grapevine that she’s going to knock Obama over the bitter clinginess of small-town voters, but whether that’s just one throwaway laugh line or something more extended is unclear. I’d love it if she came out and was all business on policy from the word go, without even acknowledging the personal drama and press viciousness. It’d be a total clusterfark for the media given how they’ve tried to paint her as an unserious rube; if she walked out and started dialing in on Iran or the surge like Condi Rice, it’d instantly remake her image.

Sounds like plenty of promising “maverick” material is in the mix, though. Exit question: How short is unacceptably short? Fifteen minutes? Part of the point here is simply to show she has enough to say to fill out a reasonably lengthy speech.

Update: Cross them fingers.

First, Palin wants to leave no question about which ticket has a better hold on the economy.

Palin will emphasize her experience and understanding of the energy economy and talk about how Alaska is the “intersection of global energy markets and domestic production.” Here, she’ll try to combat questions regarding her experience.

Palin will also pit John McCain against Barack Obama, making the case for the Arizona senator on the basis of policy and character.

“After she delivers these lines, McCain’s decision to choose her will be much more obvious,” said the aide who has been working with her on the speech.

Finally, Palin will introduce herself to voters as a likable, funny and smart person.

“Every one in the staff has fallen in love with her,” insisted this aide.

I think they may be suckering in the M$M with a soft preview look. She can’t go too wonky because she’ll be said to be a parrot, but if she goes just wonky enough hammering O’bama on idiocy like tire gauges when it is her niche….I think she’ll do well.

John McCain’s getting my vote, but I’m with Sarah.

Geez Allah. You’ve completely bought into the media template and narrative and are now responding to it on their terms. WOW

You mean like an Obama speech?

This is one speech I don’t want to read ahead of time, so I’m going to be behind the curve. But I hope she speaks for 1/2 hr.

Spirit of 1776 on September 3, 2008 at 2:37 PM

She should really compare here experience governing Wasilla with Obama being a community organizer. Compare and contrast the results.

Do the same with her being a governor and him being a senator.

It’d be devastating.

Wow – that’s 9 days more shelf life than Obama’s last Speech o’ the Century!

Her inexperience and the media comparing her to Obama totally works for the republicans. They need to play that up more.

What’s funny is that Biden is totally a worthless player at this point.

lorien1973 on September 3, 2008 at 2:38 PM

How short is unacceptably short?

5’2″. I expect the NYT to break another “scandal” about how she wears heals to make herself look 5’4″.

forest on September 3, 2008 at 2:38 PM

98% of the speech reviews of the MSM have been written already. I think she should DEFINITELY talk about the American Dream that her life is. Hell, that’s all Barry O has… a freaking story (worthy of two autobiographies, right?). How many more people do you think will relate to her story as opposed to the Messiah’s?
Let Sarah be Sarah.

Yep! I think she could do a Noonan speech like no one else.

lorien1973 on September 3, 2008 at 2:39 PM

I don’t know, if she did that it would almost look like the old Saturday Night Live sketch where Reagan was speaking Farsi and ordering all the military movements, in between pardoning the turkey and meeting the Girl Scout. It would be too close to farce and make her look coached.

This lady has given tons of speeches, including an impromptu keynote speech to a governors’ conference on energy (the one where she started leaking) that got good reviews even from the Democrats. Let her be herself and speak about the things in her life that mean the most to her.

rockmom on September 3, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Considering breaks for applause and wild unhinged demonstrations of affection, if the speech as written is anything more than 10 minutes it may not end until mid-morning.

CK MacLeod on September 3, 2008 at 2:39 PM

How bout she goes out and be who she is? She didn’t win me over with super speeches…but being real. Honestly I’d rather have her simple highlight what she’s done and where she’s plans on going with it then anything else. She is a perfect example of actions speaking louder then words.

Sarah-
Tank top, black, thigh-high leather boots and a nose ring.

Trust me.

whitetop on September 3, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Depends… If she details out her attacks on GOP corruption in the state, that will emphasize her knowledge/skill over her mom-ness while still speaking frankly.

On the other hand, if she talks too folksy she might end up like Perot’s running mate, Admiral Stockdale. (Whom I liked but… y’know)

In simpler terms…
Plain speaking + substance = good.
Complex Oratory + no substance = Obama.

Skywise on September 3, 2008 at 2:40 PM

I think Sarah is smart not to give too info. on the speech. This would give the msm time to get a jump on their hate pieces if she gives out the info.

letget on September 3, 2008 at 2:40 PM

I wish she would take a book out of the left when they claimed that Obama took a line out of the “American President” movie when he looked at the camera and said he is willing to have that fight.

She should finish her speech the same way that president did protecting his girfriend:

“Barack Obama your cohorts in the media go after my daughter like she is a whore, if you want discuss just who has more experience and who is ready to lead, then come after me. My name is Sarah Palin and Im running for Vice President of the United States”

No time limit. Say what she has to say to introduce herself to the delegates. How long was her speech last Friday? That was just right IMHO.

Funny thing is I just watched MSNBC and there was debate about this speach.

Oddly it was balanced with some saying Sarah will do well. One pundit however said the “Fix” is in because this is a freindly crowd and she cant help but come across as “Likible”

We can thank the MSM for one thing. They have focused the Spotlight on Sarah and if she shines it will look like very sour grapes to the public for the MSM to trash her later

I agree, I don’t even by the “relatively short” statement – by that I think they mean, not 44 minutes of feel good nothing ala Obama.

Topsecretk9 on September 3, 2008 at 2:45 PM

She can’t come across like she is a hockey mom running for the PTA Presidency. If so, then it really is over.

She has to talk issues somewhere in the speech with an insight of a Washington outsider on what is best for America and how she can help McCain make America better and stronger.

She cannot “whine” about the press or being a woman in politics.

And everyone will ask: “If Palin was a man, what would he say?
(And what was Margaret Thatcher’s first speech when she was chosen to run for Prime Minister of Great Britan? It will be compared.)

albill on September 3, 2008 at 2:45 PM

We all know the media will say the speech sucks no matter what she says. If she does the mom thing they’ll say she’s inexperienced and if she goes for policy they’l say she’s a bad parent abandoning her kids.

eski502 on September 3, 2008 at 2:46 PM

Time magazine. Yeh they’re reliable. Dudes, you just got pwned. Did TIME already forget how well the McCain campaign can keep a secret? Expect a long speech, a great speech and a 10 point bounce by Friday.

Palin …… spin move and breaks for the end zone.

fogw on September 3, 2008 at 2:46 PM

This better be a long, detailed, showcase speech showing where she came from, who she is, what she’s accomplished and the reforms she plans to make.

This should not be a “short, plain” speech – she is capable of much more, and that needs to be showcased so it sticks like a knife in the belly of the MSM.

Indeed, I really hope they run the speech through Peggy first… I’m sure she would be glad to take a look. I trust her opinion and I’m worried about this speech. I’m looking background, some wonk, and some taps to her opponents. Nothing too cutesy either. She needs to show her ability to lead and the passion to serve.

former Bush Administration speechwriter Matthew Scully

Scully wrote speeches for GW after 9/11. Laura Ingraham says he’s a great speechwriter and she knows him well. That’s good enough for me. I remember some of those speeches and could tell the diffrerence when Scully left.

I would really lay it on thick about her energy experience and energy policies. Also, her strong commitment to cleaning out the crooks. I say nixsay on the mom stuff. She appeals to the women I know because of her toughness and her policies.

And what do they mean by “an untested candidate”? She’s tested, she’s run for office. Her views, policy, and remarkable track record is public record. If they mean she hasn’t run for potus, is that a requirement now? Eh.

better the latter than the former…

she should come out swinging HARD on oil, ebergy, and the path towards finding alternative plentiful cheap energy and how long it will take to get there.

Highlight her sliding scale tax, explain that it is not a cash grab but that the resource also belongs to the American people but the oil company MUST make a good profit to keep the working roughneck from being laid off in lean times etc etc etc…..

no I think if Sarah rises above the noise, makes a hard case for both sides in DC to gorw up on energy, and looks the camera dead in the eye and says….

“everyone from the person working at Wal-Mart to the research engineer at MIT, from a taxi-cab driver to the astronauts we use to try to take space, EVERYONE needs energy to be plentiful cheap and domestic.”

Nah they have played right into her hands at a minimum she has our side of the aisle far more receptive to any message she bears just by her willingness to take Keef Olberdoofus and Zuniga’s pap with such grace and dignity.

Sarah’ll be fine.

I don’t think the speech is going to matter much one way or another, unless her delivery sucks, which it won’t. People who already follow politics know all about her, the rest aren’t going to make a voting decision based on one speech. This is the election season,..we’ve already been speechified to numbness. F’example, I thought Thompson and Lieberman did O.K. last night, but doubt they changed many voting patterns. Rudi won’t tonight. She just needs to use herself as an example of how the average citizen can make a difference in government. People are hungry for that. End of story.

Sarah-
Tank top, black, thigh-high leather boots and a nose ring.

Trust me.

Ignore whitetop, Sarah. Just say NO to pantsuits, okay?

My collie says:

Especially the hideous neon orange variety.

remembering that she played basketball and is going for vice president, the more appropriate sports metaphor is that of a point guard.

Fakes left, head-bob, spin move, hard pas to McCain, who DUNKS!

Just as long as the “term “We’re tougher in Alaska!” is somewhere in the speech.

Oh, and maybe her husband Todd can take a day off to kick Jann Wenner’s (US Magazine’s publisher) teeth out.

Win or lose, imagine where Palin and Bobby Jindal can take us someday.

eski502 on September 3, 2008 at 2:59 PM

Understood. But my mind won’t let me go there.

Mr_Magoo on September 3, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Allah, what are you so nervous about?

Let this woman talk about substance. Talk up foreign policy. Talk up domestic energy. Talk it up. Dont make it short, at least 30 minutes.

Dig into Obama and his trump card on experience: a campaign.

Own him on “cars in Boston melting ice caps”.

Own him on “fighting in Afghan” as he sits on a committee for Afghan, and never attends meetings, per Joe Biden.

Freaking own these people Gov Palin!

And tell the media straight up, “If you want to debate my choice on whether I can work and raise a family, you better be prepared to answer that question yourselves.”

OWN THESE PEOPLE OFR CHRIST’S SAKE! Obliterate them. The time is now, to shake off the media and make them eat their words. Stand up and talk about women’s rights.

Bow up once in your GOP lives!!!!!

If Palin does well tonight, there ought to be a pool started on which big media talking head or blogger is the first to say — without irony — that she’s still not qualified because all she did was look good and read off a teleprompter.

jon1979 on September 3, 2008 at 3:02 PM

the shorter the speech, the worse it will look…..she knows what she if doing, let her talk and refute…in 40 minutes, this country will fall in love with her…in 12 minutes they will think McCain made a mistake and is hiding her…..sink or swim….Saracuda can swim and hopefully they will let her bite more than a few times…would KILL to see her compare her exec experience with Barry…..she could give all hers and then say Barry wrote two books about himself……hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!

SDarchitect on September 3, 2008 at 3:02 PM

“I love the idea of some 527 doing a spin off commerical of Obama being qualified for President is akin to him having stayed at a Holiday Inn Express!”

Barry’s not even that qualified, he stayed at the Red Roof Inn and asked why the continental breakfast didn’t stock espresso.
