The reason for the Palin bashing in the media

The selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate has apparently deranged the mainstream media. They’ve reported that she belonged to a secessionist party for a while, but she’s been a lifelong Republican. They’ve reported that GOP convention attendees have started talking about an “Eagleton option” for her withdrawal, when the only people I’ve heard discuss it at the Xcel are the media themselves, and Palin remains wildly popular with the Republicans. What in the world has pushed the mainstream media into this kind of insanity?
The Wall Street Journal has a good analysis — fear:
Even as the Obama camp ponders how best to handle John McCain’s veep pick of Sarah Palin, the high priests and priestesses of the media have marked her as an apostate. The Beltway class is in full-throated rebellion against a nondomesticated conservative who might pose a threat to their coronation of Barack Obama and the return of Camelot-on-the-Potomac. …
They want a VP to be a kind of parliamentary choice, someone they have already vetted, someone who’s made them laugh with insider jokes at the Gridiron dinner. The Beltway class whines constantly about how it wants fresh voices in politics, but we guess this means a first-term Democratic Senator rather than a first-term Republican Governor from some godforsaken U.S. state few of them have ever been to.
We are instructed that Mrs. Palin isn’t qualified, because she lacks Washington experience. But until recently that was said to be a virtue in Mr. Obama, who is at the top of his ticket. Meanwhile, there’s hardly a peep of media notice that the Obama campaign is preposterously trying to remake Joe Biden into a poor scrapper from Scranton when he’s been in the Senate for 36 years. They all know Joe. But when Mr. McCain picks an authentic middle-class mother who is also a Governor, we are told she’s not up to the job.
The WSJ editorial hits close to home here. The outrage from the media over choosing a first-term governor seems oddly out of place for a media that has spent the last 20 months fawning over not one but two first-term Senators running for the Democratic nomination, or at least fawning over the second until his extramarital affair finally broke into the open. The third had just been elected to her second term in the Senate. Yet none of the media seemed all that exercised about a lack of experience during 2007 and 2008.
In fact, the Democratic frontrunners all had less time in elective office than Sarah Palin. Democrats seem to forget that they nominated John Edwards as VP in 2004 after only three years in public office at all, most of it spent — like Barack Obama — running for President. Where were E.J. Dionne, Sally Quinn, Eleanor Clift, and the rest of the commentariat when John Kerry made that pick? They were too busy singing hosannas to the Democratic ticket to worry about experience then, it seems.
What had Edwards ever done that indicated he should be a heartbeat away from the Presidency? At least Sarah Palin has executive experience, which most people will understand as more applicable to the Presidency than a year of legislative experience. She has worked with a legislature, run an executive branch of government, and managed to do it successfully enough to have approval ratings in the 80s.
The outrage has little to do with experience, and almost everything to do with being outfoxed by McCain. The media expected a staid, boring, safe white man that they could pigeonhole. Instead, they got a dynamic, successful, smart conservative “hockey mom” with a record of reform that Barack Obama cannot match and that is the antithesis of Joe Biden. They got knocked out of their lane, and now they have to figure out how to explain how they could possibly have overlooked Palin in their calculations. Presto! They overlooked her because she’s so inexperienced!
Forget the Eagleton option, people. That’s an option to salvage credibility for pundits who failed at political analysis. Palin’s not going anywhere, and her presence will continue to reveal the hypocrisy of these commentators.

Mabye it’d be dirty politics, but cluing in the country about Obama’s connections to nasty folks like Ayers, Wright and Rezko could really hurt Obama, IMO.
I’ve talked to several Dems who had no idea and were completely surprised when I told them about the unholy trinity.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT SARAH: JOHN McCAIN said that he’d pursue OSAMA BIN LADEN to the gates of HELL, and then he got a bright idea, he’ll drop SARAH and TODD into PAKISTAN, with instructions to “bring back that suckers head, ’cause CINDY just bought a place up in ALASKA and we’re gonna need something to hang over the fireplace.”

Because the mainstream news media is an “anti-democratic institution?” They’ve already picked who they want for president? Um, but I thought we knew this after the so called “conservative” media bashed Governor Mike Huckabee over and over and over and over with false and distorted charges.

I agree with ED……If I was forced to bet on the Eagleton option, I would put money that Obama would use it before McCain. Palin rallies the base, Biden does not! As Gov. Palin proves her salt she continues to be a cash machine for the RNC and a poll builder for McCain. Obama needs to be at least 8 to 10 points ahead in the Polls by election day to actually win this election. Just look at history….Polling is always off when Black candidates are running for office. For better or worse, some people lie during polling because they do not want to appear to be racist and say they are not going to vote for the Black candidate.
I for one am not worried about this election. Thanks to the Media being so in the tank for Obama and now their mishandling of Gov. Palin, McCain will win in November!
Just one persons opinion though!

If the Eagleton option is used by McCain, Obama is president. You turn on a conservative for liberals trashing her because of her values and it is political suicide for a Republican. She has taken on corrupt bullies before so a smart-mouthed redneck like Biden is not that big of a deal.

I’m hoping she’s like a rabid dog tonight, albeit one with that sweet smile and poised elegance, as she rips into Obama and Biden (what was he thinking, the guy is an absolute gasbag), together with their cheerleaders in the press.

The Obama campaign, and their surrogate media, did not expect John McCain to have the firepower to send a shot across their bow.
Apparently it was close enough to really, really get their attention. But their reaction suggest that they feel it could have gone in below the waterline. Says a lot about the confidence of the command structure on the bridge of the good ship Obama.
So, what possibly will be their reaction when McCain/Palin fire for effect.

You have male commentators in the media admitting to getting erections after watching extreme liberals politicians give a speech, you see questions asked in the media of Republicans that are never asked of Democrats, when a scandal is reported in the media and it’s a Republican it’s breaking news and a front page story and the word Republican is used in the story 30 times, on the other side When it’s a Democrat it’s hidden on page 30 of the New York Times and you would have to look the person name up on the Internet to find out what party that they belong to!
This is the problem with the Media today!

Palin has the MSM totally “off game”. They can’t really push the lack of experience because she has more than Obama. Instead they had to fall back on reporting some of the Kos stupidities and sending reporters to Alaska trying to dig up dirt. If they would work so hard finding dirt on Obama he would have been toast long ago. Anyone who came up through the Daily machine in Chicago has to be somewhat dirty.
duff65 on September 3, 2008 at 3:19 PM
The reason for the Palin-bashing is pretty clear – she is not dependent. Her fate is not determined or conditioned by government policy.
In the world of the media, a working-class woman with five children does not usually take care of herself. The government should be required to provide “benefits”. The government should be required to provide an abortion. A working-class mother of five should be angry and desperate.
We on the right see Palin as one of us – independent, free, happy, and capable of doing what she wants. The left sees Palin as a dangerous example for their base, and a repudiation of everything they stand for.

Why are the liberal/democrats afraid of Palin?
1. After McCain/Palin win in 2008, Palin will lead the way in 2012, leaving Hillary in the dust. After two terms of Palin, the only Clinton left will be Chelsea in 2020.
2. The MSM, backing McCain, expected him to roll over and play dead like Dole in 1996. He fooled them by doubling down with a convservative/woman with more applicable (executive) experience than either Obama or Biden. They can not believe the response she has received. If they can not push her off the ticket now, she will serve four years and have even more experience over Hillary (4 years VP vs. 8 years First Lady) in 2016.
jerseyman on September 3, 2008 at 4:02 PM
Add to that Obama- and tax-payer funded ACORN’s attempt to rig the election, then I’d almost have to agree. Almost. Any attempt to educate the public will take the form of Republican-financed ads. Which of course the Dems and the MSM will denounce and dismiss. How are Americans ever going to know the facts when the media refuse to report them? I’m with Chakra on this. The Dems own the media.

Please forgive me, a little off topic. I just read a Boston Globe article on the difference in position on abortion between the two tickets. It’s quite good, and it appears to have lot of helpful links, especially to Obama moments. I can’t remember if I saw this run through the headlines; I picked it off NRO.
For the good of the order, it boils down the differences starkly and succintly. Here you go:
http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2008/09/03/a_stark_choice_on_abortion?mode=PF
It highlights the following:
(1) the “punished with a baby” comment in the PA primary (with link to You Tube video);
(2) the lame correction (identified as such by Jacoby);
(3) respectful mention of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy;
(4) Obama’s hard-left position on abortion (with link to You Tube video for his promise to Planned Parenthood regarding the Freedom of Choice Act and description of the bill’s legal effect);
(5) Obama’s “above his pay grade” remark at Saddleback (with link to You Tube video); and
(6) Obama’s record on partial-birth abortion in the Illinois legislature.
Jacoby writes: “On abortion, no presidential candidate has ever been so extreme.”
It concludes with a respectful statement of McCain’s position and Palin’s life actions, and then remarks:
“Ambiguities may muddle the 2008 campaign, but not when it comes to abortion. The next president and vice president will be the most pro-choice in US history. Or the most pro-life.
BuckeyeSam on September 3, 2008 at 4:23 PM
Let us not forget that the first words out of Palin’s mouth after accepting the VP slot was to pander to the Hillary crowd with promises of “glass ceiling” victories. The pick was political, not professional. To pass up other more qualified nominees for a 2-year governor leaves much to answer for until of course you learn of her infant child. The puzzle becomes complete now that the fetus-freaks are happy that life was spared in the name of JC. Juan McShame now has trilolgy of fear complete: Bombs, Babies and Bibles.

Classy post.
Look at a map. What is that big tract of land we call the “Alaska” home to? ANWR.
How much did gas cost when the dems took over Congress? How much is gas now? How do Americans feel about drilling? (Hint: Which long, narrow state on the west coast with a track-record of “environmentalism” has begun shifting towards a pro-drilling stance (see, for example, recent events in Santa Barbara County)?)
Palin was picked because she is a political reformer from outside the Beltway with elected experience as a chief executive and because she has hands on expertise at dealing with domestic energy issues. She was not picked because of her ovaries, although some of us with ovaries (sadly, no kids – just a PhD) are happy that she was picked.
Personally, I am eager for a chance to see Gov. Palin educate our Speaker of the House on what a fossil fuel is and what is at stake at ANWR.

I think Ed’s right on about the surprise nature of the Palin pick explaining a lot of the clumsy media fumbling. Consider how much of the Palin coverage is transparently driven by the scumbags at Daily Kos and Democratic Underground. Sure, we all know the media guys read Kos and Huffpo, and get story ideas from them, but ever since Friday, they’ve been literally ripping posts from anonymous lunatics like ‘arcxix’ on Kos and running them as stories. The wildest fringes of Palinophobia were hit at exactly the same time we got the first round of polls showing a nonexistent, or minimal, convention bounce for Obama. The media freaked out and over-reacted, and when the first wave of embarrassment hit over the Trig Troofer fiasco, they reacted with angry defensiveness.
It’s not hard to imagine Andrea Mitchell, Sally Quinn, or any of the other MSM types as shoplifters caught with a pocket full of pilfered merchandise. They can never admit they were wrong, so they get angry, and the more wrong they are, the angrier they get. They are a crucial component of the Obama campaign, and they see themselves as even *more* important than they actually are… they probably feel that if they back down or apologize for the more libelous behavior toward Palin, or their most obvious use of the nutroots as a “news source,” their man Obama is doomed. He’ll never get across the finish line unless they carry him, and they can’t carry him if the public sees them as highly paid HuffPo diarists with fancy hairdos.
It will be most interesting to see what develops tonight and tomorrow. For all the savage hatred of Palin thus far, she really hasn’t done anything to earn the media’s anger – she’s barely said a word on the national stage. Tonight she will do so, and we might see some network anchor heads explode. Besides the unfairness of hating someone based on a (distorted) view of their biography, it’s damned unwise, because with the media outrage meter already cranked up to 11, they’ve got nowhere else to go. What will they accuse her of after she finally gets the microphone Fred Thompson warmed up for her? Cannibalism?
Sarah Palin made the liberals mad because she cornered them. Luckily, I think she knows how to deal with cornered animals.

I don’t think anyone wants to see the nation flooded with unwanted children. You make the assumption that abortion is the final word in birth control. It’s not! Technology advances, so abortion as a form of birth control should dwindle as that technology advances. Do not assume the loss of abortion will cause a flood of unwanted children, but it will cause great panic among feckless women.
I like Palin, and support her as VP, but you can’t deny that she was picked in some part because of the whole Hillary/PUMA split in the Democrat party. When you play identity politics, even to take advantage of your opponents identity politics gaff, it carries the whiff of favoritism, and that’s the way it is. I know it plays hell with your self esteem doesn’t it?
DFCtomm on September 3, 2008 at 6:49 PM
This may be a repeat cause I didn’t have time to read all of the posts, but…
I think the reason the media and Left are out for blood here is they see this scenario – Palin as VP for 4 to 8 years, runs for POTUS, and they cannot condemn her as inexperienced! She wins, then they are out of business for 12 to 16 years. They thought Obamessiah was their ticket to the big show for the foreseeable future, including another generation of Supreme Court lefties.
All of the inference and rumors are to discredit and discourage others who might have the audacity to challenge their “authority”.

Pres. Bush thought he was going to be signing an amnesty bill when he returned to the white house a year ago, so they don’t always get what they want. I myself can see allowing an abortion for incest or rape. The incest scenario is very easy with a DNA test, but the rape scenario gets much more complicated. What constitutes proof of rape? I have yet to meet a friend, acquaintance, or girlfriend who shared all my opinions, so why should I be surprised that I don’t share complete agreement with a politician I support.

Once those two words conservative and Republican were inseparable, but that time has past.

Here are some excerpts from her speech, with a little commentary by me. Courtesy of NRO.

Texas Gal,
I’m sorry I misunderstood you twice, but I made the assumption, from looking at his blog, that Alphie, is probably a Republican, or libertarian.

I’m a Republican Paleocon, just like Patrick J. Buchanan, TG.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK! Excellent as always, Ed.

A Paleo, really? Come on you’re pulling my leg.

I can see you’re very concerned. Let me tell you something buddy. It aint the policy. It’s the gal. She’s a Charlie Daniels Band Song. Screw you. We got her back. You get someone to get yours and it’s a fair fight.

For the record, I’m not a commie liberal, however I do understand the difference between a political circus and a criminal trial. Clinton wasn’t convicted of anything.
On the other hand, Bush & the NeoCons inflicted real damage to America both fiscally and politically. He will easily go down in history as the worst leader of our country.
p.s. nice moniker…let me guess, you’re about 5′2″ and still sleep in the top bunk?
DanKenton on September 3, 2008 at 7:31 PM
Look here. President Bush explained it all. The President can only try to change hearts. Oh, how utterly evil, the President should want to set a moral example. Oh the horror. Get a grip. The Congress is screwed so far to the left you don’t have to worry about your cherished right to behave immorally. It’s ironclad. She balances the ticket.
And screw you Shep Smith, trying to set the bar so high for her speech. These people are so far in the tank.

I concur on the first point: The case against Palin stinks of typical snobbishness from elite left, the press, and Washington insiders.
But to hone in on the second point, I think part of the fear has to do with the fact that with such an unknown, the media is under more pressure and there’s a lot of room for error. Forget about McCain’s judgment, it’s the press that’s cracking.
Heywood U. Reedmore on September 3, 2008 at 7:36 PM
Focusing criticism on Palin allows the BM (Biased Media) to blithely ignore the fact that Obama did coke, sat in the pews of a crackpot preacher for 20 years, has an unrepentent terrorist buddy as a political pal, has no executive experience, called for a catastrophic plan to lose in Iraq, slandered his grandmother as a “typical white woman”, won’t help his half brother in Kenya living in poverty (even though his Convention speech kept repeating that he was his brother’s keeper), and also that Barry’s mother had him ar 18 with a lying bigamist who fled back to Africa and died in a DUI.
Barack’s narrative (in Peggy Noonan’s meme) is so frickin’ inspiring… until you look at the details.
Palin probably believes in UFO’s too!

Useless Fumbling Obama’s? Yep, a UFO is out there.
coldwarrior on September 3, 2008 at 7:48 PM
I don’t really care if Palin was somewhat a political choice. This is a competition and race folks…so if you had a choice of people who all had character and an array of redeeming qualities, wouldn’t you pick the one who might help you win the whole thing by appealing to certain segments? Sure you would…its the same way you grow a successful business…by marketing to your target market.
That said, I do have 2 x chromosomes and am not excited about her because she does too. I’m excited about her because she is not afraid to stand up to opposition for whats right. I’m excited that she is 100% pro-life. I’m excited that she wants to help America see a way out of our gas prices without promoting big government. I’m excited that she can wear a great suit and a pair of fantastic stiletto peep-toed shoes and be that great strong woman without the feminist agenda and a chip on her shoulder.
On a different note, after a long time away its good to be back and commenting with all of you at HotAir. I’m hoping to get a vlog or at least a blog up and running again soon!

Because naturally, a child one person doesn’t want will be a child no one wants. I guess we should just kill them, since obviously that would be better. Hell, why stop at a trimester? Let’s just burn down orphanages so those poor kids don’t have to live with the pain of being unwanted.
I mean, all they’ll do is use up more of Earth’s precious resources if we let them live, right? And they’ll probably commit all sorts of horrible crimes.
If a “fetus” could vote Democrat in-vitro, imagine how many lives would be saved. Disgusting.

And you should be.
