The race to define Sarah Palin

posted at 10:15 am on September 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

After a masterful rollout of the Sarah Palin announcement last Friday, the McCain campaign has now found itself behind in defining his running mate to the nation.  Stung by a series of rumors and innuendo, the Republicans plan to launch a full offensive today, coordinating it with a speech that will certainly get more attention than most convention speeches.  They plan on making direct comparisons of Palin’s experience to that of Barack Obama:

Mounting a ferocious defense of his embattled running mate, John McCain said he is buying a TV ad arguing that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has more experience than the Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama.

In an effort to rev up conservatives, a campaign statement issued a list of critical media mentions that it called “smears” of Palin, who speaks in primetime at the convention on Wednesday night.

The campaign announced: “The McCain campaign will launch a television ad directly comparing Gov. Palin’s executive experience as a governor who oversees 24,000 state employees, 14 statewide cabinet agencies and a $ 10 billion budget to Barack Obama’s experience as a one-term junior senator from Illinois.”

The ad is what the campaign calls “a forward-leaning effort to counter the shameless smears that have prevailed during Gov. Palin’s introduction to the American voter.”

To a certain extent, the campaign has nowhere to cast the blame but on itself.  Instead of rolling out a series of ads extolling her experience and especially her record on reform, the campaign pushed itself into “non-political” mode for Hurricane Gustav.  They apparently believed that this would earn them some credit with the media, but obviously they miscalculated.  The dead air of the last three days gave the media a vacuum, which they filled with lies and innuendo immediately.

Now they face an uphill struggle to regain the narrative in this campaign.  Tonight, Sarah Palin will take the bull by the horns herself.  She has the opportunity to relieve all doubts with a dynamic, forceful address that encompasses her fight to reform Alaskan politics, often at risk to her own political career.  If she succeeds, then she can turn all of the slurs into weapons back at those who have thrown them at her.  If she doesn’t, it will be a long nine weeks to the election.

Today, the McCain campaign has rolled out a new ad — about four days late.  It consists of nothing more than Palin talking to the nation from her speech on Friday, which was definitely a good introduction to Governor Palin.  They plan on aggressively running this ad over the next few days as a means of reconnecting her to voters.  It’s not too late, but they’ve given the media a head start.

Update (AP): Between the Us magazine cover and Letterman’s Jerry Springer joke last night, I don’t think the worry is that she’ll be framed as inexperienced, I think it’s that she’ll end up being regarded as some sort of low-class freakshow whom no right-thinking person would take seriously. Even Gawker’s offended by the stereotype, but that’ll be a cold comfort if it catches on.

Ed- you are being too pessimistic and negative.
1. Palin is keeping Obama off the front pages. Celebrities only survive because of the infusion of daily press. (This time after the Democratice convention was supposed to be the big follow-up and hype of Obama/Biden. They have been knocked off the front page.)

2. It gets all the media scummy stuff about Palin out early and done with.

3. The only thing that really counts in the election process going forward are the debates.

4. One would assume there is lots of negatives against Obama/Biden to come. (And now Obaman and Biden’s families are fair game, plus Rev. Wright, Ayers, etc. have not been fully explored and exploited.)
(I am personally am hoping for the story that Obama had a Indonesian passport, under the last name of his Indonesian step-father who adopted him, that he used to travel to Pakistan to visit his mother…)

5. Biden suffers from terminal foot-in-mouth disease. They have kept him on a leash this week. Next week his foot will be in his mouth daily.

6. Palin was quietly vetted for the last 4-6+ months by conservative groups. They have been pushing McCain to select her. You don’t think they looked into every nook and cranny of her life? Their grade on Palin: A+.

7. No matter who McCain picked the press and Democrats were ready to attack. They are shocked by the Palin pick and, unwisely for them, threw all their “dirt bombs” at once in a panic.
Their goal was not to rally Democrats, but rather to put a fatal wedge between McCain and the Republican conservative base (as in Palin is white trailer trash)- they misjudged the Republican conservative base and Governor Palin.

The McCampaign ad team needs to hit Obama and hit him hard on his inexperience to be Commander in Chief. The fact that the MSM are hitting Palin as not having enough experience to be a VP yet she has more experience than he does!

carbon_footprint on September 3, 2008 at 10:51 AM

Ed,

Just look at the reaction here about Newt’s comments to MSNBC. If McCain’s camp follows that lead, you’ll see how the right and center will get behind McCain/Palin.

Again, I think that Palin was a “masterstroke” (from Fred!’s mouth, to our ears) as a pick and that the McCain black-out on a reaction to the Palin attacks has been masterfully orchestrated. We want the high ground, we want the media to expose themselves for what they are, and we want the left to shoot themselves in the foot. All of this is being done with little or no effort on the part of the McCain camp. Give them (the left/media) enough rope and they’ll hang themselves. Don’t think for a minute that top-notch advisors like Rove, Newt, Thompson, etc. aren’t in McCain’s ear guiding this correctly. All that is needed now is for Palin to seal the deal in her speech. The groundwork has been laid, the build up has been done, its all just waiting for her to deliver the killing blow.

I’m giving this two thumbs way way up.

Geministorm on September 3, 2008 at 10:53 AM

Again, the experience meme only helps our cause.

Non of the bottom-feeding mud-slinging has any substance to it and, in fact, has simply further energized the base.

Sure, I would have liked to have seen at least some ads touting her experience and values…

…instead we gave the left the time and opportunity to let the mask slip.

I saw Gov Palin doing her walk around this AM, she sure didn’t look embattled about anything. Must be “Just words”

tarpon on September 3, 2008 at 10:54 AM

I dunno…

I don’t claim to be a PR expert, but I think this has gone awry somewhat.

1. Taking Palin out on 3 speeches, the stuffing her is a closet was a mistake. They missed an opportunity to have her put on a public leadership mantle by doing a small press conference on RNC schedule updates. She’s #2 in the party now, let her run her convention.
2. Written statement was well worded, but it was an attempt to put the news out and downplay it. It backfired. She needs to talk to the press and tell them in person to stuff it, similar to Obama’s blurb. He got points, she didn’t.
3. I support John for boycotting CNN, but I think it was the wrong way to play it. He could have gone on air and beat the snot out of Larry. He’s great in those types of forums.

Overall, the McCain camp is coming off weak. They are doing it for good reason, but they are dodging the elephant in the room. Speeches don’t cut it. Palin could give the sermon on the mount tonight, heal the blind and make the crippled walk but the media will ignore it. Aside from their disgusting tabloid, in the tank BS; now they are pissed off for getting called out. They have 24 hr. air time and the bully pulpit. Now, Palin has a speech of maybe 45 minutes.

McCain has turned lemons into lemonade-powered Rolls Royces before. I sure hope that he does it again. I really want to be wrong in my pessimism.

Palin has complete control over the message and some good people to prime the scene with their own speeches. – forest on September 3, 2008 at 10:50 AM

She has complete control over HER message. Unfortunately, she has no control over how the Drive-Bys will spin it. But that’s okay. It’s not 1988 anymore.

ManlyRash on September 3, 2008 at 10:55 AM

BTW, how about forming a strong action group to boycott US weekly? Even if it peelsoffa few thousand conservative women readers from the magazine, it’d be worthwhile. ANd the other media will get the message before they comeup with similarly distasteful stories. Don’t let go Palin bashing di rigeur.

Also, we have to follow up every smear MSM throws at her witha call to doante to the campaign. That’s what DEMS do. SO that people won’t forget.

ManlyRash on September 3, 2008 at 10:57 AM

Sarah can handle it. And her daughters can handle it too. Yes, they will be forced into maturity quickly, but I doubt any of this really surprises them. A strong woman raising strong young women.

The media is turning Palin into Diana. She will be a phenomenon after tonight’s speech (which will have probably the highest viewership in campaign history), and I believe the media will end up regretting this onslaught of attacks.

ErinF on September 3, 2008 at 10:57 AM

It is patently obvious that this is a concerted effort by the liberal left to get Palin to quit. Interesting that the MSM is out there asking the Campaign when she is going to drop out. Since this information isn’t coming from the right, it is a pretty safe bet it is part of the left’s campaign.

As far as Obama’s lofty admonition to “back off”, it is apparent that these are “just words”. I fail to see how anyone exercising even a modicum of logic and reason can fail to reach the conclusion that this smear campaign is comming from within Obama’s camp. The attacks are SO partisan, SO outrageous, SO biased and SO coodinated, there can be no other conclusion. Obama is the only one that benefits from this.

And for those unaware of Obama’s prior campaigns, this is precisely the same tactic that knocked out his Senate competition. He claimed he had nothing to do with Ryan’s sealed divorce records being opened, nor anything to do with the records of another one of his rivals seeing the light of day during a heated campaign. You may dismiss this happening once as coincidence, but unfortunately for Obama, it is a pattern that has persisted over and over again in his run for political office.

Dirty tricks for a dirty politician. Interesting that he can’t seem to win much of anything without a well coordinated smear campaign. Speaks volumes about the substance of the man behind that carefully managed facade.

Actually (this is me making one disagreement with the article here), the hurricane, Gustav, was a blessing in disguise (foiling the Left’s glee about the destruction in that regard).

By forestalling any political campaigning by the GOP out of respect for the nation during a time of natural disaster, the Left emerged fully insane and fully exposed as being insane.

Sarah Palin’s popularity and supportable capabilities, to the Right, will remain if not be strengthened by this recent hate-spew from the Left, while the Left has used the “hurricane time” to entirely freakout POLITICALLY and SOCIALLY.

If anyone ever had any doubt that the Left is the Party of the Imbalance (and Imbalanced), these past days since hte Palin announcement (and the onset of hurricanes), have revealed the Left fully psychotic in action.

The Right, meanwhile, did the right thing and took care o the country while the emergencies merited that – the Left did the insane thing (literally) and took care to act-out insanely.

I (and many others) have said this before: The media will punch itself out on this one, and after tonights speech and over the next 2 months (Yes! This is 8 more weeks to go folks) Sarah will define herself to the public.

The added bonus is that the general pop is dying to hear her speak, and the bar is therefore set pretty low for her. Her natural charm will do the rest.

Prediction: By late September, McCain-Palin +4 or +5

Why Do We Like Palin? [Victor Davis Hanson]

Much has been written why Palin both brings strength to the McCain ticket and is a gamble at the same time. Why then the growing wave of popular sentiment in her favor?

Various reasons, but one I think is that millions of Americans are simply tired of being lectured at by smug elites. Jetting Al Gore made tens of millions finger-pointing at us about our global warming. Obama’s America, apparently unlike Rev. Wright’s Trinity Church, is a cruel, downright mean and dysfunctional place. John Kerry’s United States is one of the half-educated in need of Ivy-League enlightenment and tutorials.

So along comes someone (unlike Biden’s vastly inflated middle-class biography) who really is from the working class. She likes it—and finds snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and living in small-town America not as a wasteful use of carbon-emitting fuels, cruelty to animals, gratuitous depletion of our resources, or proof of parochial yokelism. Instead it is a life of action in an often harsh natural landscape, where physical strength is married to intelligence to bring us food, fuel, and progress.

Palin’s symbolism is the antithesis of the metrosexual wind- or body- surfing politican, and hair-plugged, neurotic TV pundit So at this time, right now, millions apparently like Palin’s atypical 19th-century profile. Again, it’s a pleasant change of pace from Harvard Law School, DC politics, “community organizing” and the can’t-do, ‘they raised the bar on me’ collective complaint.

If she can beat off the frothing Newsweek/MSNBC/New York Times inbred rabid wolves, and do it with the grace she has shown so far, she will fill a deep yearning among Americans for someone like her. A lot of Americans, if they watch reality shows, prefer truckers on ice or Bering Sea crab fishing to endless psychodramas of thirty-something suburban whiners.

So apparently they are eager to see a rare politican who is unapologetic about America’s past achievements (cf. Obama’s “tragic history” and need for more “oppression studies”), and who reminds us with pride that a muscular world of action, not community organizing, creates the bounty that others use and take for granted but so often sneer at the methods of its acquisition.

Right now, there are millions rooting for her in a way not true of Biden—and many who are criticizing her don’t have a clue why that it is so.

The media and elites just don’t get it, but WE do. That’s what counts!

Eggggsellent!

drjohn on September 3, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Look Ed, chill out!!!!

Give Americans a little more credit for being able to parse through all of the shilling the media is doing against Palin.

I have to tell you, I just volunteered for the first time in 8 years to make phone calls for the local Repub. party. My job? To reach out to other republicans to get their commitment to volunteer (I did this last night before the speeches). I called more than 90 people and nearly all were ready to volunteer – in word and deed to help elect McCain/Palin.

On the topic of Palin I want to expound on a very interesting phenomenon. In nearly every case (and mostly I spoke with women) when I asked about Palin and if they were excited, I got an overwhelming response. “You go girl.” “I’m mad as hell at the media.” “I’m now going to vote for McCain becuase I’m excited about this ticket.” “I can’t believe what the media is doing to this wonderful lady.” were the most common responses.

The base is energized. And now we must stand strong mentally against the media’s attacks. Their goals appears simple: discredit her so she’ll stop down. They only had several days to do their damage, because once she gives her speech it’ll be over for the media. Sure, they’ll continue to try and dredge up something, but by then it won’t work. They had to make their moves Monday and Tuesday to hopefully (in their minds) get Palin to step down. This isn’t going to happen, and after tonight and through the rest of this week, they’ll be largely minimized and muzzled.

If the attacks continue, look for a continued effort by Dem. operatives to shut it down. Here’s the problem for the Obama campaign. They may have put out a statement that they disagree with the media, but everyone knows how much in the tank the media is for Obama, and that they are all registered democrats. By default, people see them as shills for the democrats. Keep it up and Obama will get hit by the boomerang, and hit hard. Obama’s people will soon be pleading with the nutroots to stop. Of course, it won’t work. No one can control the freak show on the left.

This is all fine with me. It’s about time for the Daily Kos, Demo Underground, and like sites to get their comeuppance. They think americans think like them and agree on the issues from their warped, out-of-the-mainstream perspective. They’re sorely wrong and will be exposed.

Could the McCain camp have handled some of this better? Probably. But now isn’t the time to become overly critical. Now is the time to show our support, to donate, to volunteer.

And in the meantime, grab some popcorn – it’s about to get really good!!!!

Many posters have said that Palin represents a “normal” success story. Too ofter we are bombarded with “exceptional” success stories: Obama born on the side of a volcano in Hawii…struggling to survive in a private school in Indonesia, etc. Even McCain, while a herioc story, is really beyond the ability of most people to really, REALLY understand what he went through.

Sarah studied hard, did what she had to do, go a few breaks (but largely, from what I’ve heard, made her own breaks) and has lots to show for it. It’s a story that is actually well within the grasp of normal folks, with hard work of course.

The true value of this ticket is Palin’s extra-ordinary ordinary story.

Sarah Palin and the Two Americas
By Thomas Lifson
Liberals have long lamented the existence of two nations in America. They are right to do so today, but in a way they never meant. It is not the divide between rich and poor which soon will be causing serious pain on the left. Sarah Palin’s pending nomination for Vice President is exposing the depth of the cultural divide between Middle America and the leftists who have taken over the education, media, and cultural establishment of our country.

McCain needs to make the Palin nomination work. He’s made her narrative far to much of his theme that he can even think about dumping her for some other no-name like Pawlenty or some party regular like Romney.

Palin and McCain are joined at the hip now and cranky old bastard had better be telling the truth (not always a given) when he says that she got a full vetting. It’s one thing for the surprise of a granddaughter coming along before inaguration day. It’s something all together if that ethics investigation comes out unfavorably the week before the election.

highhopes on September 3, 2008 at 11:14 AM

The media is going to do what they are going to do, as far as innuendo and chasing of stories with a fervor they never showed eight months ago when the Enquirer story came out and Edwards was in the midst of running for president.

But Palin has two chances to define herself free of second-hand commentary — the speech tonight and the debate against Biden in October. The former is more important than the latter, but a good performance in the debate means the attempt to portray her as “trailer trash” will be tougher to pull off.

jon1979 on September 3, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Actually, I think that they mostly register as independent so they can give the illusion of non-bias. If you really want to know their affiliation, you need only look at their campaign donations. I think the last survey I saw had it 12:1 ratio (number of donations, not amount) Dem to Rep.

Did anyone else note Schuster crying about being registered “Independent” when Scarborough was laying into him? Like that means anything, its their easy “come back” whenever they expose themselves…oh, actually I’m registered Independent, if you must know, blah blah blah…No, we didn’t need to know, but we knew you were just dying to tell us, as if that means anything.

If they didn’t allow time for the smears they wouldn’t have any righteous indignation to display tonight… I think it’s yet another masterstroke.

John. E. McCain, soooooper genius.

Ding Ding Ding!
This is my theory too.

carbon_footprint on September 3, 2008 at 11:19 AM

Even McCain, while a herioc story, is really beyond the ability of most people to really, REALLY understand what he went through.

McCain has a unique lifestory but let’s not confuse that with his upbringing. Son of a prominent Admiral, virtually assured acceptance into the Naval Academy as a result, etc. When it comes to success stories, McCain is more akin to Biden or Obama than to the way Palin became successful. She had to work for it in ways the other three don’t have a freakin’ clue from their elitist roots.

Weren’t you the ones yelling last week about how inappropriate it was for Obama supporters to ask a Chicago TV station not to air an interview critical of Obama?

It’s Wednesday which means Ann Coulter’s weekly column comes out tonight. I can’t wait to see her take on all of this.

She was reportedly on Glenn Beck yesterday and stated that she would be voting for McCain because it puts Sarah Palin one heartbeat away from the Presidency.

The bottom line logic of most people who are not partisan in either camp, the ones that will determine this election, dictates that if Palin is such a bad choice for McCain, the Obama supporters would be cheering her choice not trying to undermine it, just as the McCain supporters cheered Obama’s choice of Biden. And in there lies the Obama supporters problem … Joe Biden, they know he was a bad choice made in panic about Russia and want to portray Palin as a bad choice made in similar fashion.

thats not what happened, they tried to shout down and silence Kurtz, without any facts to back up what they said. they were using typical brown-shirt tactics.

boycotting is perfectly fine. trying to silence the opposition isn’t. but again anyone who can see beyond talking points realizes this.

right4life on September 3, 2008 at 11:24 AM

While I am confident that Palin’s speech will go well tonight, I agree that the McCain campaign has been strangely passive for the last 48 hours. Finally, today, they’ve decided to fight back. But they have squandered some of their momentum from Friday’s announcement. Did they not think the left would attack? If so, shame on them. Or were they just wanting to be all warm and non-partisan during their Convention week? that does seem to be a big McCain theme. If so, again, mistake. I hope they understand now that their choice is: throw punches or take punches. There is no in between.

Hopefully, today’s effort includes tieing the Obama campaign to the smear machine.

james23 on September 3, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Ed, it sounds like you have the same respect for the collective intellect of Americans as the MSM. I think that the McCain played this had perfectly. The liberals are burying themselves in this smear campaign and it’s not going to sit well with women and most men. Only a complete moron would form an opinion of her based upon the ludicrous headlines that MSM is putting out.

I’ll close with saying that I fear for our country if this plays out well for the Dems.

How great would it be if, in tonight’s speech, Gov. Palin challenges Obama to a debate, something like this “The state Senator from Illinois has been avoiding a debate with Senator McCain all summer. And since I’ve have accepted the challenge to be Sen. McCain’s running mate, the press have done nothing but compare state senator Obama to ME. Maybe he would be more comfortable debating a “sweetie” from the town of Wasilla instead.”

That would cause a stir I think, and some loud cheers from the crowd.

Call these the “Palin Witch Trials”. Reminds me of the witch scene in Monty Python’s Holy Grail. The logic is about the same. Put a fake nose on her and call her a witch because she looks like a witch.

“The McCain campaign will launch a television ad directly comparing Gov. Palin’s executive experience as a governor who oversees 24,000 state employees, 14 statewide cabinet agencies and a $ 10 billion budget to Barack Obama’s experience as a one-term junior senator from Illinois.”

Awwwright! Finally!

To a certain extent, the campaign has nowhere to cast the blame but on itself. Instead of rolling out a series of ads extolling her experience and especially her record on reform, the campaign pushed itself into “non-political” mode for Hurricane Gustav.

Exactly. Falling behind was unnecessary, a tactical mistake with the campaign not with Palin herself. I’m confident Palin is strong enough to regain control of the narrative and pull McCain-Palin ahead of Obama.

As Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain exclaimed when he was out-manned, yet rallied his troops with a text-book manuever that turned the tide of Gettysburg and saved the battle and quite possibly the Union:

Stand firm, ye boys from Maine, for not once in a century are men permitted to bear such responsibility for freedom and justice, for God and humanity, as are now placed upon you.

So stand firm, lady from Alaska, for not once in a century are women permitted to bear such responsibility for freedom and justice, for God and humanity, as are now place upon you.

Looks like Palin’s selection makes women less likely to vote for McCain (from Rasmussen Reports on Sept. 2):

“If McCain’s strategy was to reach out to women voters, however, thus far it hasn’t been successful. The night after the announcement, slightly more women voters viewed Palin as the right choice for McCain’s running mate, but now 41% say she was not, versus 36% who still believe she was a good choice. Forty-one percent (41%) of women say they are less likely now to vote for McCain because of Palin, as opposed to 31% who say they are more likely to support him. Women voters were essentially even on this question in the earlier survey.

Men still back McCain’s decision. Forty-one percent (41%) say she was the right choice, while 37% disagree. Earlier, men favored the decision by a 43% to 31% margin. Forty-three percent (43%) of men voters say they are more likely to vote for McCain because of his choosing of Palin as a running mate, but 34% say they are less likely to do so. This is a jump in support from the earlier survey.

But even a plurality of men (47%) say Palin is not ready to be president in the event of the 72-year-old McCain being incapacitated while in the White House, although 32% believe she is ready. Women voters by a nearly two-to-one margin believe Palin is not ready.

The gender gap on Palin is likely a reflection of the larger gender gap in American politics. Women are more likely to vote for Obama while men are more likely to vote for McCain.

Voters overall by a 48% to 29% margin say Palin is not ready yet to be president, a view shared by 74% of Democrats and 48% of unaffiliated voters but only 16% of Republicans.”

I was NOT voting for McCain… now I am… and there are a LOT of conservatives out there like me…

This has not been reflected in the polling data, which is interesting… Palin was not JUST about the womans vote, but about Social Cons, and other small gov conservatives who do not trust Washington insiders to change anything…

Her pick cemented the base….

Romeo13 on September 3, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Excellent analysis as usual, Ed.

And silly us for thinking that the media would take a time out to devote some real journalism towards a potential disaster.

However:

…as a means of reconnecting her to voters.

Sorry, Ed. I don’t think we ever got disconnected. In fact, with the hysterical attacks mounting against Gov. Palin, the connection only got stronger.
