The race to define Sarah Palin

After a masterful rollout of the Sarah Palin announcement last Friday, the McCain campaign has now found itself behind in defining his running mate to the nation. Stung by a series of rumors and innuendo, the Republicans plan to launch a full offensive today, coordinating it with a speech that will certainly get more attention than most convention speeches. They plan on making direct comparisons of Palin’s experience to that of Barack Obama:
Mounting a ferocious defense of his embattled running mate, John McCain said he is buying a TV ad arguing that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has more experience than the Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama.
In an effort to rev up conservatives, a campaign statement issued a list of critical media mentions that it called “smears” of Palin, who speaks in primetime at the convention on Wednesday night.
The campaign announced: “The McCain campaign will launch a television ad directly comparing Gov. Palin’s executive experience as a governor who oversees 24,000 state employees, 14 statewide cabinet agencies and a $ 10 billion budget to Barack Obama’s experience as a one-term junior senator from Illinois.”
The ad is what the campaign calls “a forward-leaning effort to counter the shameless smears that have prevailed during Gov. Palin’s introduction to the American voter.”
To a certain extent, the campaign has nowhere to cast the blame but on itself. Instead of rolling out a series of ads extolling her experience and especially her record on reform, the campaign pushed itself into “non-political” mode for Hurricane Gustav. They apparently believed that this would earn them some credit with the media, but obviously they miscalculated. The dead air of the last three days gave the media a vacuum, which they filled with lies and innuendo immediately.
Now they face an uphill struggle to regain the narrative in this campaign. Tonight, Sarah Palin will take the bull by the horns herself. She has the opportunity to relieve all doubts with a dynamic, forceful address that encompasses her fight to reform Alaskan politics, often at risk to her own political career. If she succeeds, then she can turn all of the slurs into weapons back at those who have thrown them at her. If she doesn’t, it will be a long nine weeks to the election.
Today, the McCain campaign has rolled out a new ad — about four days late. It consists of nothing more than Palin talking to the nation from her speech on Friday, which was definitely a good introduction to Governor Palin. They plan on aggressively running this ad over the next few days as a means of reconnecting her to voters. It’s not too late, but they’ve given the media a head start.
Update (AP): Between the Us magazine cover and Letterman’s Jerry Springer joke last night, I don’t think the worry is that she’ll be framed as inexperienced, I think it’s that she’ll end up being regarded as some sort of low-class freakshow whom no right-thinking person would take seriously. Even Gawker’s offended by the stereotype, but that’ll be a cold comfort if it catches on.

Yeah! Hat/tip me.
Question: How many days has Sarah Palin been serving as Governor of AK?
Answer: 639 days
Question: How many days has Barack Obama been a US Senator?
Answer: 1338 days
Since Obama has been campaigning for 19 months, or 571 days. 1338 days – 571 = 767 days!
But keep in mind that Palin’s 639 are constant governing and decision making. You have to calculate the recesses that Congress takes.
Therefore, when a Liberal tells you Palin has no experience, just laugh in their face and walk away.

I will not give up hope yet. Palin has given me a reason to be excited again, and I’m not ready to give that up.

Actually I thought the media frenzy actually helped McCain/Palin.
I just can’t see how regular folks are ok with the media’s personal attacks on her 17 year old daughter.

How many pieces of state legislation and contracts, agreements, negotiations and decrees have Sarah Palin’s signature on them?

If? She is a dynamic speaker, I think better than BO, & certainly better than McCain or Biden.

I still can’t understand…
how can Bobby Jindal not be ready for primetime, even though he governs a much more dynamic and populous state…but Sarah Palin is “obviously” going to do such a great job…
Key numbers:
670,000-population of alaska
9,000-population of the podunk town she mayored
$20,000,000-federal earmarks lobbied for and recieved by mayor Palin
$15,000,000-her largest expenditure as mayor…a hockey rink they spent $7 million arbitrating the land rights to
am i missing something?

More than ever, I feel that this election will focus more on Obama vs Palin than it will Obama vs McCain.

Because that’s a great way to have a civilized political debate, right?
I’m pulling for her. I’m so tired of all of the negative press — even though I do disagree with some of her views. I want her to hit it out of the park tonight and bury the media naysayers.

I was thinking this last night. The McCain campaign should have just had a muted first night with the speakers focusing on service instead of canceling entirely and creating that news vacuum just gave the media the space it needed to smear Palin and her family.
It’s long past time to expect good faith from the media. They’re on a holy crusade for The One at this point.
Slublog on September 3, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Someone made a comment, here, about the SS# a day or two ago. These people are just deranged – totally deranged. I think they’ve all gone off their meds for the campaign.

Not really. The Obamacampers want it this way but McCain is wiley enough to avoid that trap
William Amos on September 3, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Yes. Jindal explicitly turned down the job a few weeks ago, and judging from his excellent performance this weekend, I’m sure the people of his state appreciate him where he is.

And keep in mind one very important thing that I hope McCain will point out, since nobody seems to be making the point.
Sarah Palin is running for Vice President.
Barack Obama is running for President.
The fact that their experience is comparable is a problem for Obama, not for Palin.

BTW what this really means it the GOP has to take off the kid gloves with Obama. Playing defense with Sarah is fine but they need to start utting the fire to Obama’s feet.
The Britney comparison campaign shows that the Obama campaign can be spooked and make bad decisions.
Time to go on the offensive on HIM.
William Amos on September 3, 2008 at 10:27 AM
Yes! I thought about that but felt it was obvious. Perhaps you are onto something though. The MSM is acting as if SHE is running for president! I say, let them attack her. It is only galvanizing our base and others.

J_Gocht on September 3, 2008 at 10:28 AM
Actually, a staged rollout would not have been well received. The new ad is simply a highlight video from her excellent speech in Dayton. That got plenty of play over the weekend.
The WSJ is right that there’s panic on the left. Gov. Palin is at least as qualified to be POTUS as Barry O but she’s second chair. The difference is that Gov. Palin has been a national figure for only a few days while Barry O became a rock star over the last 4 years. His inexperience has been pushed aside by a mainstream press eager to help make history. By allowing Gov. Palin’s inexperience to percolate in the press, Team McCain is well positioned going into the “final” 60 days of this seeminly interminable campaign.

Well, whetehr they could or couldn’t have done this or that differently. She is who she is and the facts are what they are and the media would have had their pile-on in any event.
All it does in the end is make the stakes higher tonight. And I don’t think that’s all bad. If she bows it, well, she blows it, but if she shines then the disgusting broadsides of the media the past few days will boomerang in a way that I suspect will be just as unprecedented as when they were launched.
If Sarah hits it out of the park tonight, this race is over. And if that happens, the media have only themselves to blame.

don’t worry too much about the headstart. My mom was a full on Obama supporter who is coming around because of the attacks. I suspect she is not alone.
nazarioj001 on September 3, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Normally Ed, I’m right with you on these topics, but this time I think you misread it.
I think McCain’s camp has played this to near perfection. Witness the reaction that the right has had to the lefty smear campaigns. By concentrating on Gustav, McCain counters the BS from the photo of him cutting his B-day cake during Katrina (btw, I live in east-central Florida, and we were directly hit by three catagory rated Hurricanes…Jim Cantori was in Palm Bay twice in one month for Francis and Jeanne, and you didn’t see us crying because the PotUS didn’t show up or that members of Congress were going about their normal lives…). Anyway, he shorted out any possible negative reaction from the media for his label of being disconnected or unconcerned. Meanwhile, the media built itself up into a frenzy over nothing and exposed its bigoted and left-leaning nature for the world to see. Every claim about privacy and the family being off-limits was thrown to the wind and the media showed their true colors.
Now, McCain’s camp can “react” to their attacks and lay waste to the trash. This leaves the McCain/Palin camp on the high moral ground and allows them to challenge the Obama/Biden camp to live up to their words to “Fight the Smears” and to take a hands-off approach to the families. At the same time, they insure that there will be huge media attention on this, more people will side with McCain/Palin due to outrage at the personal attacks and Palin will have a fantastic platform from which to either seal the deal, or fall flat on her face. Seeing how she has handled herself so far, I think this is going to be a home run, out of the park, across the street and over neighboring buildings…
I don’t think it could have been done any better.

All this has done is expose the left to some American’s that didn’t realize just how nasty they are…and how most of our media basically just makes things up to forward the leftist agenda. Sarah is one of US…not a pompous affirmative action Ivy league grad…or a Columbia university school of communist journalism grad. She doesn’t hang out with George Clooney or go to Cape Cod for the weekend. The left HATES us & they are deathly afraid of her…it’s funny as well as sad what they are trying to do. The more bs they sling at Palin, the more the silent majority is going to get out and vote.

Time for your Dan Quayle candidate to answer some tough questions
William Amos on September 3, 2008 at 10:34 AM
Ed, you need to get out of the media feedback loop.
Probably 90% of America was not paying attention to any of this until maybe yesterday and more likely today. It was Labor Day weekend and most people were on vacation or being evacuated due to the hurricane. Yesterday was the first day of school in much of the country. Average voters now know just enough to be very intrigued and likely to watch Gov. Palin’s speech tonight. The media frenzy guarantees that all the networks will carry it. Most Americans are going to see a poised, attractive, articulate woman telling a very compelling story about who she is and why she is up there, and they are going to say to themselves “what is all the fuss about? I like her.”
I can tell you, I was at the 1988 Republican convention and the meltdown over Dan Quayle FAR exceeded this. Quayle was so obscure he didn’t even have a following outside of the Indiana delegation. When the media frenzy hit him, he really DID look like a deer in the headlights. But Quayle gave a wonderful speech that showed what a dynamic young leader he really was (and included some great social-conservative red meat that really helped get the party behind Bush); the next night, George H.W. Bush gave an even better speech, and we all left knowing that we were going to win that election.
So please, everyone, don’t panic. This is not the way we would have scripted it, but it wll be OK. The benefit of the total surprise last Friday still outweighs everything that has happened in the last 48 hours.

Ed,
You’re frankly giving the media too much power in your assertions.
What have Americans been hearing the last few days, but non-stop free Sarah Palin coverage, that the American people are revolting to?
Frankly, you media types are too close to the forest to see the trees.
Screw the MSM!!
Don’t fall for these tricks and start blaming the McCain camp. They had their hands full with everything the way it all shaped out.
Start getting behind this campaign and don’t look stupid by trying to be centrist and scrutinizing the McCain camp into oblivion.
It’s not endearing HotAir to your readers and you risk getting raked under the hot coals as well.
If quit trying to gain respect from the MSM, by being so centrist here, you’ll actually gain solid respect from conservatives.
If you continue to try to be so centrist and “fair” we could just as easy tell you to screw yourself.
And that is a fair warning, just revealing what I really think of you.

Hearing news this morning that perhaps some Dem operatives released Palin’s SS number, minus a few digits. Now, I heard from one of my (many) liberal friends…and one said that you could read the numbers from that PDF of Palin’s voter registration proof that came out yesterday, if you looked at an angle on an LCD screen. I tried to…but I couldn’t make anything out.
Just wondering if maybe that’s the reason…

I’m glad the McCain campaign has declared war, but I don’t have a lot of faith that the media, who controls the venue that is the field of battle, will play fair.
FNC just contrasted the Us Weekly cover for the Obamas (”Why He Loves Her”) with the new cover for Sarah Palin (”Babies, Lies, and Scandal”), asking if it demonstrates a double standard in media coverage of Palin. That’s a start, but they have a long way to go. I’ve been disappointed that FNC has not taken the lead on the Bristol pregnancy stories by declaring candidates’ kids off limits and categorically refusing to cover it. They continued to announce it every 30 minutes for 3 days like it was breaking news.

Keeping with the theme, Palin will expose the media as the collective horse’s ass that they are.

Rudy was just on with Dianne Sawyer answering Questions about Palin. She even asked him if Palin was President on 9/11 would he have been confortable with that.
I hope to have the video up soon.

Ya think? Welcome to the party.

This seems to be a lesson the GOP will never learn.

Thanks. Actually the name comes from my kids. One is an aspiring rock musician, and the other just likes to collect rocks!

The loons on the left have unwittingly given Governor Palin the perfect fodder for her speech tonight.
They have basically put the fish in the barrel, The Governor need now only point and shoot.

Indeed…an from all indications thus far, Sarah’Cuda is an extraordinary communicator who relates to her audience – like Reagan did. She may very well become America’s Maggie Thatcher.
ManlyRash on September 3, 2008 at 10:47 AM
PoDunk town? Are you seriously insulting people who don’t live in LA or Chicago or New York? Are you dismissing their need for a mayor? Are you dismissing their ability to vote? Are you dismissing them because you think they’re a bunch of backwards hicks who are too stupid to live on either coast? Are you dismissing them because you’ve never actually lowered yourself to go to a Podunk town so you automatically assume that something under a million people is not relevant? I grew up in a town of 300 hundred people. Am I not a person because I didn’t grow up dodging gangs and smoking crack?
Idiot.

Judas Priest you’re tiresome.
Given the way some of the IVAW members have behaved (e.g. Knappenberger), I’d avoid them too. What would be the point of meeting with them when every other thing they say is a threat, a slander, or a bad-faith argument? McCain works every day with antiwar politicians and no doubt hears every day from antiwar members of the public, including former service members. Why does he have to meet with a fringe group?
Has Obama met with any Vets For Freedom folks?

The onslaught of attacks is all good news. The magnitude, viciousness and ferocity of the attacks only means one thing — Sarah Palin is the right choice.
scrubjay on September 3, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Hah! We’re two peas in a pod. 27-2 butt kicking…Go CATS!!!
fossten on September 3, 2008 at 10:48 AM
OTOH, this attack is creating a real backlash. They are really playing dirty. I might even work for the campaign now!

Would someone please start publishing home addresses and phone numbers of the media? Please start with CNN since I live in Atlanta.

Yep, she went directly from being a mayor to being the GOP nominee for VP.
Getting your talking points a bit late aren’t you? I think she was a Governor for a bit of time after she was simply a mayor.
And on the Dem side? A neighborhood organizer (whatever that is) and a guy from Scranton.
coldwarrior on September 3, 2008 at 10:48 AM
Exactly.. Remember how everyone said this election is a referendum on Obama and whether he is ready? Now its about who is better Obama or Palin.
The more Palin speaks she will be liked by the American people.. no doubt about it. She is no boring person like Quayle.
justinok on September 3, 2008 at 10:48 AM
I know the feeling. I was one of the ones who wanted Palin to stay in Alaska a little while longer, but the morning I found out she was picked it made me genuinely excited about the campaign for the first time.
And it was the second time (first being the House sit-in) that I was genuinely proud to be a Republican.
Maybe it’s because I’m a woman. I don’t know, but I really like her. It’ll hurt if she fails.
Exactly. The mentality on this should be obvious to everyone.
Though to be fair, she is running with a 72-year-old cancer survivor. McCain’s VP should be looked at more closely than other VPs. I’m not at all saying that they’re right, but I do see how that changes things a little.

You bet. And the timing is good. She is delivering a speech to a friendly audience and big viewership. It’s not an interview or a debate where the media stooges can try frame the discussion how they want. Palin has complete control over the message and some good people to prime the scene with their own speeches.
