Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:
Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”
Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.
While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.
I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.
Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

I’m loving these gratuitous shots of Palin’s fam. I don’t care how old Willow is she is smokin.

Must get this printed NOW!
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Okay Governor Lingle said that Obama and Biden have zero executive experience. Now that may be true of Biden but it in’t true of Obama. Obama was chairman of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. That’s what makes it so funny. In order to challenge that no executive experience comment, Obama would have to admit he worked extensively with Ayers and that his only executive experience was a failure. I’m loving it. LOL
Actually this lady is coming off with some pretty good zingers.
Deanna on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM
“H&C can have their show another night. Fox should be airing these speeches, no question. Bad move, FNC.
MikeknaJ on September 3, 2008 at 9:55 PM”
Right On! I keep switching to PBS. They seem to be better at shutting the hell up and focusing on the convention!
Star20 on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Watching a great speech by the Governor of Hawaii comparing Governor Sarah Palins experience vs. the two Dums on IPTV only blabber and Blubber on FOX SNEWS! God I’m getting sick of this channel also.
Why doesn’t Hannity STFU and show the convention this governor is doing a better job than Hannity’s same ol same ol and his lefty puke bag Colmes.
dhunter on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM
Love the line about electoral votes. She’s doing good.
Spirit of 1776 on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM
I thought Huck’s poverty reference was good. I didn’t see it aimed at Mitt, at all. He wove it into explaining that America is all about the opportunity to move up and that government only gets in the way.
progressoverpeace on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM
He’s a real man. Go Todd!
Pasalubong on September 3, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Loxodonta on September 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM
How about a Jindal/Lingle ticket? I like the way that rolls off the tongue.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM
And if that tool Hannity is going to insist on his show, he should get off his a** and knee Colmes in the groin and call him out for his role in the blog smearing.
BuckeyeSam on September 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM
I want to hear Rudy use some variation of the zero line. Then he can end his speech with:
Lose the zero. Get the with hero. John McCain.
BadgerHawk on September 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM
No joke. CSPAN cures ALL those ills.
techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 10:00 PM

It seems to me the network have done something with the sound. It seems very muted. PBS sounds much more “real”. Anyone else notice this?
SouthernGent on September 3, 2008 at 10:02 PM
Yeah I agree Palin/Steele or Jindal would be better.

A great Lingle story is that she’s currently engaged in combat with the (Democrat) Honolulu Mayor, Mufi, who wants to build a Springfield Monorail.
She’s against it, of course.

Sir Loin on September 3, 2008 at 10:08 PM
Been doing that since I found out she was the choice. Obambi blew his shot at a historical speech. Palin has a once in a lifetime chance here. She’ll rise to the occasion.
Heh. Rudy’s smacking obambi for voting ‘present’.
techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 10:08 PM
Idiots on DU are going spastic over “Bristol” holding Trig, but that’s not Bristol, that is Willow. They don’t even know the kids they’re insulting and attacking.

He couldn’t figure out whether to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. It was too tough.”
