Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:
Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”
Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.
While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.
I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.
Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

Another crazy Dem lady on Larry King just said she hasn’t heard ANYONE make the charge that Palin is a bad mother for pursuing the VP office and neglecting her kids in the process.
Second crazy Dem agrees that NO ONE has leveled that charge against Palin.

Unquestionably.
Olby just said some BS relating to Track’s deployment. He made one sound as if it’s the equivalent of releasing state secrets. And she cited a 9/11 date, and he quibbled about whether it was a ceremony or a deployment. It’s nonsense.
Matthews is whining about ideology. Ugh.
Olby is whining about sarcasm. He’s citing “elitism” against “community organizers.” I think their are more small towners who have been dissed by Obama’s Bittergate comments than angered commnity organizers. Yeah, he should pursue that avenue. Even Nora O’Donnell complained earlier that she hear’s that all the time on the trail: “What in the hell is a community organizer?” And Obama doesn’t want anyone revisiting his lack of accomplishment there. Dead end, Keith.

Even when the applause lasted for minutes at a time, several times?
If that thing didn’t pause for applause, it was way way way ahead of her from early on .. which means she went to the page early on and didn’t show it .. which means that her nerves are steel.

I was just wondering, but is McCain still running for President, or did he just drop out and let Palin takeover? I haven’t heard much about him this week, so I thought I would ask and see if he was still in this thing.

This was truly a great moment in US political history.
I feel comfortable, like when I was young and sleeping in the back of our family car while my Dad drove. Not a care in the world.
My 44th birthday was two days ago. I graduated from high school in 1982 when Sarah registered as a Republican. My heroes were Reagan and Pope John Paul II.
I have an ex-wife in Michigan with our 5-year old son.
I have a job interview Friday for a position that will pay probably in the area of $120,000. I know I’ll get it.
But, I’m really thinking of turning it down to volunteer for McCain’s campaign if they can use me in Michigan. Maybe I can get to see my son more often while there.
I know I can find another job with the work I do and I have plenty of savings for awhile.
I want a country like what Sarah talked about tonight for my boy.
An interesting point. My son’s first meat that he was able to eat was…get this…salmon. And that is how he got his name: Littlebear.
Good night and rest well, the election is not over yet, but our side just put up 6 runs in the first inning.

That much seems very clear to me at this point. Between her performance on previous television interviews, the Alaska gubernatorial debate, her rollout as VP on Friday, and other appearances, it’s apparent she does indeed have nerves of steel and nearly supernatural poise. She doesn’t even “um” or “uh” when she speaks extemporaneously. They’ll see, and they’ll need to invest in adult diapers.

By the way, did Larry King have a panel of Republican black men on his show immediately after Obama’s speech to “react”? (i.e. crap all over it)
aero on September 4, 2008 at 1:14 AM
A thought ..
Obama’s a good teleprompter speaker .. but as he showed at Saddleback, a hot mess off-the-cuff.
I’m really really hoping that our girl doesn’t have that problem. Debate (even in our stupid, silly, bastardized “prepared speech, no interaction” format), is a different animal.
From what I’ve seen in interviews though, she’ll do fine. Seems to be able to think on her feet and not answer questions using “uh, um” between every third word.
cgoode777 on September 4, 2008 at 1:17 AM
Or have that bizarre hatred of ferrets…
LOL!
Rudy’s speech was outstanding tonight. He was the king of snark, and I loved it. He was my first choice early on, pre-Fred. I would not have minded Rudy in the top spot at all. Of course, then we would never have gotten Sarah, because no one but Mac would have picked Sarah. All is as it should be.

Was VP pick Sarah Palin’s speech effective in introducing herself and boosting John McCain’s campaign?

The only people that should be afraid is her kids and her weak husband.
Pray for them, they have been thrown under the bus by momma.
The Republicans underestimate the fact the country is no longer “51%” pro-family (at least what used to be the Conservative, Evangelical idea of pro-family), and since with McCain and Palin, they showed they aren’t either…why bother with either of them. Now they are both nothing but Bush three for real. Nothng new to offer anyone, just Jerry Springer for the reast of the owrld, and rhetoric from a mom who cares nothing for her kids, for the conservative base…
Lovely.

Third option on that poll:
They’re clearly hoping so hard that she sucks as bad as Obama without the prompter and writers, but the evidence of past unscripted appearances all over YouTube say she’s going to knock their socks off there, too. As I said, invest in adult diapers, members of the MSM. You’re gonna need ‘em.

I want to add a hallelujah for C-SPAN! I watched all of the speeches tonight from their channel. It’s great to get the feed live, uninterrupted, and without commentary or “analysis”.
I can’t watch CNN or (P)MSNBC even for laughs at the insipid commentary. I boycott the major networks and PBS is a no-go. And, anymore, I can barely take Fox. I’ve had it with Hannity & Colmes and Greta.
So, C-SPAN it is. Will watch tomorrow’s coverage that way as well…

You are so going to get flamed. If she were a man with five kids would you feel the same way, because I personally thing the Presidency is a horrible environment for a family. The scrutiny, and lack of privacy makes it tough to raise a family. I don’t, however, think you’re going to see a single person getting a nomination any time soon.

Yes they did up until the point that NY cast their votes and Hillary as their highest elected official threw all the votes to Obama and then called to invoke the rule of nomination by acclamation which meant all the remaining individual votes by States were not necessary.
