Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.

While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.

I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.

Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

I have to admire you people who watch MSNBC and report back to the rest of us. I couldn’t stomach watching that crew over there.

Olby asked if Biden could drop the need to be “deferent” with Sarah in the debates now since she was so mean to the chosen one.

Geez, what happened that allowed the MSM to drop their deference?

hawkdriver on September 4, 2008 at 12:21 AM

Rudy was pretty funny when he did the Obama with his nose in the air bit. Probably a throw back to his Saturday Night Live appearances.

Marcus on September 4, 2008 at 12:19 AM

Sarah should throw the first pitch for the World Series opener– no matter which teams are playing. Could show John Kerry how it’s done.

PA Cat on September 4, 2008 at 12:19 AM

Blaaahhahaha – LOL, I just got an image in my head of a limp-wristed Obama trying to throw out the first pitch. The guy’s a friggin’ nancy boy.

Best night EVAH. Now, the press will be hounding her with “gotcha” questions, but they may get something back they can’t handle. Love how she zeroed in on MI, OH, PA. Combined her energy expertise with a little talk on economy and jobs.

Curses, foiled again; Barry isn’t the only one who can deliver a speech with the teleprompter, camera action and huge crowds roaring. So the ubertards have divined from Barry’s chicken guts that Palin’s speech was great, and that it was written. Well, every ubertard knows that the only way an ubertard gives a good speech is to take it from someone else, preferably dead so they neither mind nor feel flattered at being imitated. Exactly whom are the ubertards saying that Palin is imitating, having delivered a great speech MOST SUCCESSFULLY, proving herself the real thing?

MS. AUTHENTIC, Gov. Palin
HATS OFF, GENTLEMEN!
Palin resembles the classic warrior spirit that Delacroix depicted leading a revolution for liberty, La liberté guidant le peuple. NO WONDER THE DNC, SOCIALISTS AND MEDIA FEAR PALIN! Saracuda is potent, the very essence that O’Nada impersonates.

My advice: bookmark it for later reading. Don’t let it sour your mood.

Best line in her speech:

“To the most powerful office on earth, [John McCain] would bring the compassion that comes from having once been powerless”

Just a short paragraph, but as moving as Fred Thompson’s more extensive biography. It’s a line worthy of Ronald Reagan.

Olby is plugging an AP story about access to the family.

A**hole.

On half-ass MSNBC poll: I think he said 16% more likely, 60%less likely, and 15% unsure about voting for McCain.

Problem is that it’s probably a poll of Maddow viewers. But that’s likely a problem when 16% of those butches (sorry, I hate her) are going with Palin.

Robert Gibbs, senior Obama adviser, on CNN just said, “We have yet to hear just exactly how John McCain is going to accomplish a stronger economy, more jobs, blah, blah, blah.” What does he think happens when we increase domestic energy production, build dozens of nuclear plants, encourage small businesses, and all that stuff Palin listed quite specifically tonight? All those are concrete plans that stimulate the economy and create thousands of jobs.

Obama’s people are scrambling. I expect renewed viciousness from libs and the media bright and early in the morning. They’ve abandoned all pretense at objectivity.

Here’s a couple more Texas sayings that are relevant:

Obama = He thinks the sun comes up just to hear him crow

Obama = He’s got tongue enough for 10 rows of teeth

Kinda self explanatory!

Olby asked if Biden could drop the need to be “deferent” with Sarah in the debates now since she was so mean to the chosen one.

Good idea, Keith. Because we’ve just seen how she responds to abuse.

She did many things. But I think you could say that she did a could job af being the little [girl] who told everyone that the emperor has no clothes.

It’s about time.

MSNBC is reporting breaking news about a breakdown in the teleprompter.

Crisis. She’s a f***-up.

BuckeyeSam on September 4, 2008 at 12:45 AM

If she delivered any significant part of that thing from memory after a teleprompter breakdown in the middle of the biggest speech of her life …

… well …

game over.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing about how the Republican’s orchestrated it .. made sure she memorized or had paper to quickly go to .. just to show she ain’t so stooopid after all.

I did see her flip a page at some point. If the prompter died .. she handled it amazingly well .. duplicate hard copy or not.

However, this was the best speech, words and delivery, I have ever witnessed at a political convention in my life. And I am OLD.

I agree. It was very good.

Zell Miller’s speech at the RNC in 2004 was awesome though.
