Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.

While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.

I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.

Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

Hard to believe it wasn’t even a week ago that some of us were pushing the Pawlenty Veep thread up into the 2,000s when the Palin rumors started intensifying.

Told y’all not to worry.

Now on Nightline they are taking the ’she was a bad governor’ track.

Limerick on September 4, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I’m wondering if there was too much of the negative stuff from her that might turn off independents. On the other hand, getting dissed that much by a woman is really going to get under The Messiah’s skin. Let’s hope it makes him crack on the trail.

I peaked into MSNBC, right after the Palin speech, and rogor mortis has set in.

Andrea Mitchell has decayed the most, so far. Olbermann, Brian Williams (who looked down right ugly tonight), and even Brokow look desperate.

Entelechy on September 3, 2008 at 11:53 PM

Gotta love the unenthusiastic response from the tools at DeMSNBC: Olby and Matthews called it a “nice presentation” that should appeal to the base. Could these people be any more in the tank for the Democrats?!?

Dagnar on September 4, 2008 at 12:01 AM

Speaking of the “O”.. how great was that counter strategy to put the ZERO hand symbol in the audience!! I loved it..!!

Had to check in as we near 2000 posts. That was a tour de force. One for the ages. Sarah kicked some ass! The MSNBC crowd should be doing their broadcast with bags on their heads.

BrianBoru on September 4, 2008 at 12:03 AM

I have to say that the lineup tonight was just fantastic. From the start with Michael Steele through to the end with Governor Palin, it was an impressive display of teamwork and each individual did a highly commendable job. I feel good about the depth of the GOP and the next wave. Excellent night. Truly excellent.

progressoverpeace on September 4, 2008 at 12:03 AM

Evidently McCain is not one.. I wonder if his daughter saw that here and instigated that… it was very effective towards internet users.

Texas Gal on September 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM

Has not been since Reagain that I heard a politician give a long speech and my reaction at the end was… can’t we have a little more, please?

Not sure it’s possible to exaggerate the potential importance of this night. Say a prayer or three of thanks and protection if you’re religious, and even if you’re not.

Saw that – and hope they continue to make it a campaign issue (although I seriously doubt it). Unity? Yeah right, no better way to divide a country than to propose pursuing criminal charges on a sitting President. That’s fringe crap right there.

I’m eager to see what McCain does to follow this speech. Politics is an art of stagecraft, and his challenge is to ride the wave of energy from tonight without being swamped by it. I’m confident he’s working on a truly outstanding speech, and I really look forward to hearing it. Then we’ve all got some work to do between now and November…

I’d like to start by getting a grassroots movement under way, to have the major media organizations identify the cretins who were taking news ledes from Daily Kos, summarily dismiss them, and promise never to hire anyone like that again, followed by a public apology to the Palins. It will take a lot of pressure to get it done, but I say Yes We Can.

Doctor Zero on September 4, 2008 at 12:09 AM

What is with the douche Brian Williams? Olbermann, Matthews, the rest of the panel had to admit it was a good speech. They went to Brian Williams and he looked down to a piece of paper and READ FROM A LIBERAL BLOG posting almost the entire article they had written slamming her. They guy came off having less class than Olbermann. I had heard the Republicans were maybe going to boycott the Tom Brokaw debate. They should. I hope Rush tears him a new one.
