Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.

While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.

I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.

Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

Heh. The giant flag behind Mitt reminds me of Patton.

ReubenJCogburn on September 3, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Hey Mitt! CO2 is NOT a pollutant!

techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 9:14 PM

He was a little overexcited at the beginning. He’s found his pace, though.

What you said.

Spirit of 1776 on September 3, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Mitt’s got a good speech, but his delivery is awful.

More cowbell FRED!

Romney/Palin 08? Sigh…

jp on September 3, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Mitt was more dynamic than I think I’ve ever seen him. Still a little awkward, but better.

ReubenJCogburn on September 3, 2008 at 9:18 PM

…. Was that shorter than Bush’s address?

Typhonsentra on September 3, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Not the guy I chose, (I voted for Fred even though he was out by the time Texas got to voice our preference), but not a bad speech by Mitt.

techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Dang, I’m watching Hannity and Colmes, and Colmes sounds like someone knocked a couple of his teeth out – does he always talk that funny?

It wouldn’t surprise me if someone had, after his catty BS this past week.

Romney/Palin 2012

NickTx on September 3, 2008 at 9:19 PM

I’m surprised so many people are falling for the Obama “magnanimous” comments. Of course he can act magnanimous, knowing the mainsteam media will beat up on Palin for him. I give him no credit at all for saying that. Just words.

rivlax on September 3, 2008 at 9:20 PM

One hour until Sarah Palin!!!!!!!

carbon_footprint on September 3, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Sarahmania

William Amos on September 3, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Heh. The folks are having a good time at the convention. If you’re not watching it on CSPAN, you’re missing some good coverage minus the idiot pundits.

For the dnc the msm covered every down in the mouth negative minute of every speaker wall to wall.

They hate us.

It’s gonna be so sweet when they lose yet again. I’m predicting another McGovern debacle and for the marxist progressives to be completely discredited and tosses into the wastebin of history.

Ugh. The Huckster’s on. Time for a break.

ReubenJCogburn on September 3, 2008 at 9:26 PM

Uh oh… can’t say I’m looking forward to the Huckster’s speech, but I’ll keep an open mind. At least he’s not the VP!

Mitt rocks! “Keep Al Gore’s plane on the ground”, Awesome, I laughed out loud.

Geronimo on September 3, 2008 at 9:27 PM

Open up that big bottle of whine, there Huckster. How clintonian.

techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 9:27 PM

Mitt’s speech was great. Where was this fire that both he and Fred exhibited last night and tonight before the primaries?

great line by Huckabee

jp on September 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Not a Huckster fan here, but so far he’s doing well. A couple of zingers so far.

NickTx on September 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM

I love Huck’s humor.

jencab on September 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM

I doubled my planned donation on roll out day. Maybe I can cough up little more tonight.

IIRC, funds raised after the end of August can’t be spent on the McCain-Palin Campaign?? I’m not saying that’s a reason not to give, just an observation.

bluetick on September 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Dang, I thought Mitt’s speech kinda sucked (at least what I heard of it since I had to scramble around and find it at CSPAN since Fox didn’t cover it). I hated that whole liberal/conservative thing – very stale stuff IMHO.

Buy Danish on September 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Well, I like Huck, but that story about Obama was wrong.

progressoverpeace on September 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Steele and Romney both hit it out of the park. I’m a little behind on tivo but I assume Huckabee will do the same.

This convention needs to get fired up!!!!!!!!!!

Metro on September 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM

Okay, Huck. Let’s get going, now.

progressoverpeace on September 3, 2008 at 9:30 PM

Huck makes me cringe but that Madonna joke was hilarious.

The Ugly American on September 3, 2008 at 9:30 PM

I have a confession to make. I like Huck and I always have.
Just not a popular thing to share here.

carbon_footprint on September 3, 2008 at 9:31 PM

“Barack Obama’s Excellent Adventure”– haha! Does that make Biden Ted?

Pasalubong on September 3, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Bull, Huck. Obambi’s their pick ONLY because he’s black.

I’d love to vote for a black President. But Obambi isn’t in any way qualified for the job. That’s just a fact. But the dems don’t care about that.

Foolish people expecting the reins to this great country. They do not deserve them, and they will not get them.

And Huck’s doing a pretty good job tonight saying things that need to be said, and saying them well. So cudos to him for that.

techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Shrink government. It’s the only way.

progressoverpeace on September 3, 2008 at 9:31 PM
