Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:
Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”
Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.
While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.
I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.
Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

CNN, much to my amazement, seems to be pretty positive about her speech….except for Gergen… I think for them to say anything else would finish off what very little credibiity they have left!
She was fantastic!

Great speach. BUT SHE DIDN’T WRITE IT 0 N0EZ!!!1!1!!
I thought she did a pretty good job of mixing in just enough “aw shucks, I’m just a small town gal” and delivering body blows to team Obama. It dragged a bit at the beginning, but I was actually expecting that. I was not expecting her to hit Obama as hard as she did, though. I was pleasantly surprised.

TheSitRep on September 3, 2008 at 11:45 PM
We would like to thank the MSM in advance for their viscious smear campaign. It not only lowered expectations, but undoubtedly resulted in a dramatic increase in undecided viewers interested in just who this Sarah Palin was.

I’m being dead serious here. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as much compassion for a politician, let alone one who I didn’t even WANT to be on the ballot last Friday morning.
But I swear before God, if McCain / Palin wins, I just might f!cking cry.

The differences between the DNC and RNC shows are stark. One was a circus act of factory workers, sadness, Bush hatred and a loud distracted audience. The Republicans have been pushing service and country hard, chants of USA. They should have drawn straws for use of the POW story perhaps, but aside from that I can’t see how anyone can prefer the DNC contrived drama.
Even the stage differences were quality. Images of America and the flag OR huge booming name of the person on the stage, glorifying them instead of the country.

Wow, I’m thinking “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington”: a female, conservative version of James Stewart. It really was better than I could have thought and the way she provided “contrast” to Obama in such a sweet but strong way. You have to respect her, if not her views.—How can her expertise in energy be anything but perfect right now? It’s as if the whole universe aligned when no one was looking. I knew about Palin from this website and Michelle Malkin’s a while ago, but I never dreamed this.

She will be the very first Woman to ever be Vice President in this great nation’s history. And she’ll probably be President too. Look at her honey, and listen to her carefully. Now always remember- you can be anything you want to be, as long as you stay true to your conservative convictions.”

The Democrats and the media treat Republicans in general and conservatives in particular like they are war mongering, backwards loons and they feel like the McCain people are being rough. Please. After the crap they have said about Bush for the last 8 years decorum has become a dim memory. They should have thought about that.
Terrye on September 3, 2008 at 11:50 PM
The Left has been, once again, totally humiliated by their own selfishness and stupidity. They made the idiotic assumption that Governor Palin would be a little shrinking violet, and made up a whole slew of stories based on that, peddling them as truth. Then, Sarah Palin appears and rips their guts out, while smiling. The MSM is proven wrong, once again. They’ll have to take a little rest to nurse their gaping wounds, but then they’ll come back with forged papers, innuendo, and space alien stories trying to press their bet. They’ll never learn.
