Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:
Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”
Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.
While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.
I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.
Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

Typical. Sarah Palin gets things done. – Obama writes 2 books about how wonderful he is.
So this wasn’t written by her. And they think that their comeback was smart?
Lordy!

AP’s gonna have to change the red meat image to a small cow image, now (ala Krauthammer)

Let me say this too since I’m sayin’ stuff: Sarah Palin is absolutely and without doubt the right choice for McCain’s running mate. He could not have done better.
She killed it tonight!!!

YES! I just switched between Fox & MSNBC, and through the utter contrast saw just how biased Mitchell was, during her post-speech interview of Giuliani. She so deflated, she threw a few half-hearted pitches his way, and he took the opportunity to bat them out of the park. It ROCKED!
And boy did she ever reveal her ill will here. She basically took the other side against Giuliani in the interview. (And yet at the same time, couldn’t really say much… hilarious!)

Sure, and I like him. But why does inexperience in the #2 spot compromise that argument for the #1 spot. Both of Obama’s parents died young and he smokes. I’ll bet he and McCain have comparable life expectancies.

Loxodonta on September 3, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Can any of us imagine ourselves in her position just prior to the speech? The pressure?
National attention–if not more. Such high expectations, a nitpicking, vile-minded, gang of media vultures in the wings?
I was nervous for her as she took the stage.
HAH.
Joke was on me. Heck, it turns out I was more nervous than her.
Wow. What a great job Sarah Palin.
And how unbelievably CUTE was it when Piper Palin (their youngest daughter) held her baby brother Trig in her lap, then licked the palm of her hand nad gave his baby hair a spit combing!
I about died in peace at that sight.

Olby still does not want to talk, how often have we seen that?
allrsn on September 3, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Not Just Olbermann
These MSNBCers are visibly depressed.
Andrea Mitchell is glumly interviewing a beaming Rudy Giuliani. By contrast, when Mitchell was reporting from Invesco, she gleefully recounted the Democratic delegates’ reaction to Obama’s best lines: “Whooee! Whooee!” she said into the camera.
Kicking it back to Keith after the Rudy interview, a crestfallen Mitchell said, “The war has begun.” Indeed.

My God, I can’t believe it. I love McCain! Yes! I said it! I almost cried at the end when he came out and proclaimed “Didn’t we make a great choice!” I choked back tears!
Then, my son said “Dad, I thought you hated McCain?”

That was one of the best political speeches I have ever heard. The woman is a political natural. I have rarely seen anyone connect with an audience like that. And she managed to remain human. No one thinks she is the messiah or anything as ethereal as that, she is the real deal. She is an American.

I have only one regret about Sarah Palin’s speech: She gave it as the vice presidential nominee and not as the presidential one.
I’m still not voting for John McCain. But I’m voting for Sarah Palin. (And yes, I do realize that the two of them appear together on the ballot, and that you can’t have the one without the other.)
