Republican convention, night three: The crucible

Michael Steele, Mitt, Huck, Rudy, and then the main event: The heavy hitters start around 9 p.m. ET with the Barracuda to follow circa 10:30. Strident Obama partisans are excused from rooting for her; everyone else needs a note from mom. She’s still got an open field to run: 66% say they don’t know enough about her, and of those who do, two to one are in favor. We’ll have the video as soon as it’s available, probably shortly before midnight. If you’re away from the TV, most of the news nets’ websites offer live feeds, as of course does C-SPAN’s. A taste of things to come:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Romney’s going to go out and tweak Michelle Obama, an exceedingly foolish move after The One made a show of pushing Bristol Palin out of the crosshairs a few days ago. Granted, it’s apples and oranges, but it’s stupid to hand the media a gimme victim meme. Maybe Mitt will wise up and pull it beforehand.

While we wait, I offer you the good, the bad, the ugly, and the bizarre. The good: Whatever the left would have you believe, Palin’s apparently not one to legislate her religious convictions. The bad: The talking point about commanding the Alaska NG really is weak. The ugly: Three of the earmarks she requested as mayor of Wasilla were included in “pork lists” compiled and publicized by … John McCain. And the bizarre: Jake Tapper floats the theory that McCain’s camp is itself trying to circulate smears about Palin, to rally the base behind her. His evidence? The fact that they sent out a press release today about the new Enquirer story before he’d had a chance to see it. Good work, Jake.

I leave you with sweetness and light from a different McCain/Palin ticket. Exit question: Timothy Noah makes a tantalizing point here. Could the pathetic “scandals” the media’s unearthed have lowered expectations so much that anything north of decent tonight will be hailed as an earth-shattering triumph? Just desserts, baby. Taste them. Click the image to watch.

Update: Here’s a better exit question, actually. Try to guess who asked it: “Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow?”

Valiant on September 3, 2008 at 11:10 PM

Without John McCain we would not have this moment.
Don’t ever forget that.

carbon_footprint on September 3, 2008 at 11:11 PM

Why Palin. What a terrible VP choice. McLame deserves to lose and anyone who voted for him in the primaries is an idiot.

Hockey Mom Scores a Hat Trick!!!!!!

CanuckInPA on September 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM

Whats amazing to me is not that this great woman is miles and miles ahead of her rivals here at home. Those guys are child’s play for her.

Its that I don’t think there’s a world leader out there that can take her on. If her wit was physical blade, there’s not a soul who crossed her who would not be cut.

Brad on September 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM

This is what this convention has done for me so far:

I once said I would vote for McCain, but I wouldn’t support him financially or vocally.

Change. Change I can believe in.

Time to start convincing my friends (like they need it if they watched tonight) to start a little grassroots cheerleading for this ticket.

VolMagic on September 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM

John, nice touch. But get off the stage, it’s her/their moment.

Spirit of 1776 on September 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM

Where has she been all my life? I haven’t been this fired up about a candidate since The Man himself.

McCain did the impossible, he made me want to vote for a ticket he is on. Sarah is a keeper.

Matthews likens her to a torpedo aimed at Barack and Michelle as a cultural alternative.

I think Chrissie has a crush.

yo on September 3, 2008 at 11:14 PM

Olbermann was like “it was a good speech, and people who like that kind of thing would like that thing”.

i love you guys

Yes, Olbermann is a douche, as is Matthews. STFU!

MsUnderestimated on September 3, 2008 at 11:15 PM

Even Olbermann and Matthews are giving here kudos. Wow.

madne0 on September 3, 2008 at 11:15 PM

The media will live to regret the decision to try to kill her off. If you’re going to kill the queen, you better succeed.

econavenger on September 3, 2008 at 11:15 PM

AWESOME

Get your credit cards out, we gotta let the Maverick and the RNC know we like what we saw tonight!

IU_Conservative on September 3, 2008 at 11:15 PM

No shots at the press. They have no reason to gripe. Even I was bowled over by Sarah. WOW!!!! Best political speaker since Reagan. Great Job Governor!

Mort Kondracke – great speech that she didn’t write.

Give with one hand…take with the other….

IrishGirl17 on September 3, 2008 at 11:15 PM

Matthews found it “very appealing”.

forest on September 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM

All McCain said on stage was “Didn’t we make a good choice.”

CanadianGuy on September 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM

Olbermann’s not crediting her, he’s fumbling for a good response. He’s asking if a convention is the proper venue for sarcasm.
