Peggy Noonan on Palin: “A real and present danger to the American left”
posted at 11:55 am on September 3, 2008 by Allahpundit
More than any other reason, this is why McCain is finished if he dumps her. The sentiment is palpable among our readers; the desperate viciousness of some of the attacks on her really admits no other conclusion. If it works and the left beats her at the polls, Republicans will mourn, but if McCain hands them her scalp, god help him.
Because she jumbles up so many cultural categories, because she is a feminist not in the Yale Gender Studies sense but the How Do I Reload This Thang way, because she is a woman who in style, history, moxie and femininity is exactly like a normal American feminist and not an Abstract Theory feminist; because she wears makeup and heels and eats mooseburgers and is Alaska Tough, as Time magazine put it; because she is conservative, and pro-2nd Amendment and pro-life; and because conservatives can smell this sort of thing — who is really one of them and who is not — and will fight to the death for one of their beleaguered own; because of all of this she is a real and present danger to the American left, and to a future Obama candidacy.
She could become a transformative political presence.
So they are going to have to kill her, and kill her quick.
And it’s going to be brutal. It’s already getting there…
I think the left will go hard on this: Fringe. Radical. What goes on in her church? Isn’t she extreme? Does she really think God wants a pipeline? What does Sarah Barracuda really mean? They’re going to try and make her strange, outré, oddball. And not in a good way.
In all this, and in its involvement in this week’s ritual humiliation of a 17-year-old girl, the mainstream press may seriously overplay its hand, and court a backlash that impacts the election. More on that in a moment.
Follow the link and read that “more in a moment” for yourself. Even by Noonan’s standards, it’s a dynamite piece. What are the odds of the press overplaying its hand? Reasonably good: See, e.g., Jonathan Martin’s piece at Politico blithely dismissing conservative critiques of the nastiness of the coverage as pro forma GOP demagoguery hardly worth taking seriously. Even better, see this canny Mark Halperin flowchart of why there’s suddenly such a feeding frenzy around the Barracuda. It’s incomplete — Patterico and Jessica’s Well can fill in some of the blanks — but otherwise right on target. Purely rhetorical exit question: Of the two tracks Halperin lays out, which do you suppose reporters themselves are more passionately invested in?

The vile smears and the outrageously sexist attacks on Governor Palin and her family are showing America what the Left in this country is really all about.
Keep it up, fools. You’re digging your own electoral grave.

McCain sat in a N. Vietnam Hellhole for close to six years. The man will not cut and run just because a bunch of one-sided, so-called, journalist cross their “i”s at him. Put a bunch of new faces in the GOP. Shove the Democrats off The Hill once and for all. I can’t believe all this banter about him dumping the most exciting new politician to hit the scene is ages. Sorry Barry, you may not have the ponies to cover Her full court press.

Considering the incredible angst of the left and their determination to force America into socialism, this may not be the wisest thing to say.

I’m with NoDonkey. I’m pretty confident that most, if not all HA’ers, watched Fred’s account of McCain’s captivity last night–and were moved.
Those f***ing a**h***s have no idea who they’ve picked a fight with. They don’t know because they don’t have the kind of character that McCain and Palin have. It exists neither in their party nor in their candidates.

McCain should come out and say:
” You know what? I would rather lose and election then allow the left to destroy a good conservative woman, the future of this party and this country. We know your scared of her and if you want her gone your going to have to vote against us in Nov. ”
Stand by this woman Mr. McCain, she symbolizes the next generation of solid conservative leaders.
HoosierCon on September 3, 2008 at 12:45 PM
Key question: Is McCain feeling the same and ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of his new hotshot wingman and the country, even if they both crash and burn in a final moment of valor? I think the answer is yes, given his character. A direct strike on the DNC nuclear center is worth it. This is definitely shaping up to be a watershed moment in political history.

I’ll say this, if they do kill her all bets for avoiding the civil war are off.

I have been on the fence about McCain and I probably would have voted for him even though I’m not the biggest fan. I had my favorite and he’s been out now for a while. So I wasn’t sure if I was even going to vote.
The more I hear the left beat up on Palin, the more I can’t wait to vote for McCain. They have made my distaste for McCain irrelevant.
McCain/Palin is my ticket.
Lieberman and Thompson were great last night.
Geronimo on September 3, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Peggy Noonan also had an excellent point at the end of her article, referring to lobbyists:
Megadittoes, Peggy! Too much greasing the palms of lobbyists is (partially, at least) what brought down the GOP House majority in 2006. Both McCain and Palin have made careers out of sending them away empty-handed, and voters LIKE that!
Steve Z on September 3, 2008 at 12:46 PM
I can’t help but marvel at this unhinged rage from the left. It kind of reminds me of King Herod going after all the kids, or Vader killing younglings.
Can anybody really be that evil?
Yeah, guess so. And willingly broadcast it to the world.
innominatus on September 3, 2008 at 12:46 PM
Now why would a maverick with McCain’s record be seen as likely to cave to bullying by his opponents. Isn’t it more likely that the bullying simply amplifies his resolve.
I’m not in the least concerned that McCain going wobbly and ditching her. He might do a lot of dumb things, but that’s not one of them. The talk of such a thing is completely unfounded, no more contrived cognitive dissonance pumped out by the left.
So I hope MSM/bloggers keep on jumping sharks, as they’ll end up discrediting only themselves. Odds are high that Palin will take them down.

Palin lovers who have the good fortune to have her visit their area should, by all means, practice concealed carry. If you see someone acting suspiciously, keep an eye on them, and be ready to act. The woman is proud of her Second Amendment rights, and would protect ours. Let’s show her that her faith is not misplaced, and serves to protect.

Thank you, John McCain! I have been reading Hot Air and NRO for several months and trying to come to terms with voting McCain. (Sitting on the fence or voting for Obama are not actual alternatives, but paraphrasing Dunlap – forget it – McCain!)
I have dreaded pulling that lever for the man, but dang it if he did not pull it off! I not only want to vote for him – I called in a donation and ordered a sign.(Neither of which I have ever done before.) My wife is not thrilled about the sign thing, but I told her this election is more than Republicans and Democrats. It is almost right and wrong. I’m voting for McCain and Palin because they actually stand for something and I trust them to put the country’s best interest behind their own. I don’t think the other side would give one second’s thought to putting all of us under the bus. To the liberals – here’s your sign – Country First!

In a way, I think the left has been trying to get her to call it quits before the GOP convention confirms her as their VP candidate. I think they’ll lose interest in her after that. I hope, anyways. Well, maybe not. It seems to be having an adverse effect on Obama’s campaign. I don’t really want that though, I want the best man to win, without the funny business.

Although I’ve watched the MSM devolve into the house propaganda organ of the lunatic Left over the years, I have never been angrier at those pompous journalistic hacks than I am now. With their hysterical attacks on Sarah Palin, I have been pushed from being a tepid supporter of McCain to a rabid one, and I’ve backed up my supporter with donations. If I can find any other way to get back at the MSM, I’ll do it.
Cicero43 on September 3, 2008 at 12:58 PM
There’s no way McCain will dump Palin. First, he shouldn’t and second, he’s not that type of weasel coward. It doesn’t matter how much the lefty loons pile it on. They’re only endearing her to the sane population in the country and getting her more support and votes for the ticket.

I think it’s high time that President Bush take a Reaganesque stand and let’s the so called “media” know that enough is enough and it’s time to quit bringing shame down on their own heads with the lies, innuendos, and politcial attacks against a seventeen year old who made the mistake that millions of households have seen over the years.
Reagon could look into the camera and make his case and the country paid attention. Now is a time for such leadership. Condemn the pundits and politicians for their despicable, shameful behavior.

Oh, if McCain were to drop her her now, he gets the stick instead of the carrot of keeping her. His name would be mud. He would be seen as a traitor to his grave, probably worse than if he has given up his buddies in Hanoi under physical duress.
It would make it look like the old “liberal McCain” picked the brightest conservative future star with the goal of setting her up for media friends to shred apart for days while she was kept quiet, all so he could get back at the party for nixing Lieberman. He can’t dump her bruised and bloodied body with her kids in the gutter to die a slow political death now as he moves on to bigger and better things with his serious liberal VP Joe Lieberman.
Obama wins in the biggest landslide in the history of the nation if that happens.

Another effect that these savage and disreputable attacks on Palin have done–at least for me living here in the NW epicenter of the looney left–bring me out of the “closet” as a strong supporter of Republicans.
For the last few elections, I would vote one way but not really be forceful in conversations on my beliefs. I would allow the snarky, John Stewart asides to pass unchallenged in order to avoid disrupting an otherwise pleasant dinner/breakfast/meeting/etc.
No more.
Have had two experiences already (Palin is a creationist and Palin is a separatist) that I simply said “untrue” and defended my statement. Everyone (even the lurking McCain/Palin supporters) were in shock! I had broken with the social convention and actually stood up for my opinions. It was amazing that the snarky asides ended for the rest of the night. Don’t know if I changed anybody’s mind, but at least it stopped me from feeling like a Christian during pagan Roman times….

The “OK Corral” comment is usually used by lefties to denounce the idea of citizens carrying weapons. I’ll assume you’re not and assume you’re merely thinking of the advantage provided by the Secret Service.
A few years ago, when I was in college, President Bush passed through town. There were police posted along the route, but no Secret Service men that I could see, unless they were in very good plainclothes. He was not in a bulletproof SUV, but a tour bus. He waved to all as he went by. The potential for someone to do something was plenty there.
There is every reason to be vigilant. These lunatics are getting more and more violent with every election.

Folks if we pull this off it will be a huge hit to the future viability of the union of feminists and the democratic party on any topic that does not involve pro grievance mongers and abortion rights radicals.

Nice of you to assume that those of us exercising our constitutional right to carry arms, especially when licensed to do so, are likely to incite or be part of a shootout. People with licenses to carry concealed weapons are almost never involved in crime, and that is a fact. MadisonConservative is right, our job as citizens of this society is to be involved in maintaining order, not just sitting back and expecting others to provide it for us. If someone wants to legally carry in an area where the Secret Service is not restricting weapons, then more power to them. I would likely do that if McCain or Palin came to town, just for the exact reasons that MadisonConservative cited. The loony left are getting more and more radical and desperate by the day, and it will be up to us to stop them when they finally decide the time is right for their attempt at a power grab and/or widespread rioting. When that time comes, the police will be overwhelmed and it will be our job to protect our families and neighborhoods. Make no mistake, that day is coming, and you had better hope that there are enough people like me out there who are willing to actually do something instead of waiting for others to fix things. Because if there is not, then we are in very big trouble indeed… American society to become just like Europe overnight, if the loons get their way.

Acutally the libs saw this even before we did and then turned around and made it worse by attacking her.
What has happened is all corners of the far flung republican coalition from the most liberal repubs to the far right have suddenly fell in line and fell in line hard

When Pat B and Bill Kristol and everything in between agree on something this spells big trouble for liberals.

I just emailed Sally Quinn at the WaPo and asked her to reprint her article suggesting that John Edwards not run for president since he is the father of two small children and his wife has cancer, not to mention a chick (and possibly another infant) on the side. Thanking her in advance.
I am just saying!

The first paragraph is beautiful, but I’m skeptical about the second. What rankled Obama is what rankles Obama. That it touches on his life, that his mother was 18 when he was born. By attacking Palin’s daughter, you’re attacking him, and THAT’s what bothers him so much, because for him, it’s all about him. I know that’s a very cynical reading but it fits with the rest of Obama’s narcissistic personality. Don’t criticize him personally, even by proxy. It’s all about him.

Since Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, known as the yellow journalists of their time, the MSM have elevated it to new heights in their attempt to set the political agenda for the country as it relates to Sarah Palin becoming the Vice President of the United States.
The yellow journalism they are putting forward stems from the fact they are desperately scared of a ‘soccer mom’. A breed of woman that they have been cultivating for decades in an effort to bring them over to liberal’s side.
Well, the cultivating has official ended as they are now denigrating them and telling them that the job/family sacrifices they have made, and are now making, was only a ruse on their part.
So tonight, when Palin speaks, the soccer moms will be telling the MSM to go to hell, and they will no longer put up with their patronization of them.

Spoke to a sibling on the phone this morning, a realtor in the DC area.
Seems a lot of DC-area realtors are more than willing to give the Obama campaign money.
The reason?
If McCain is elected housing prices in the Langley/Great Falls and Potomac, MD areas are going to drop. Why the drop? Federal jobs to be cut and Beltway Bandits and lobbyists being squeezed out of mainstream Washington power bases. Have no idea as to how widespread this thinking is, but it does figure.
Vote Obama, enlarge government, increase the number of Beltway Bandits and lobbying outfits…thus housing prices in the upper-scale neighborhoods go up as competition for new homes grows faster than they can be built. For a realtor, this is money in the bank.
It also shows how shallow one segment of our population can be…what’s in it for me attitude prevails. Then, again I guess it does go beyond realtors, it goes to the heart of the Democrat Party…what’s in it for me.

Still drunk on Obama’s Kool-Aid. But finally aware that she’s drunk, and looking around for some black coffee.

The left has to destroy her now, just as they would if it was Jindal or Cantor. They can’t let a young conservative get a foothold in the national picture. If they can bury her now it will dissuade other young conservatives, maybe even blue dog democrats, from throwing a wrench in their socialist agendas.

Obama doesn’t have to attack her with bogus “higher ground” statements; he’s actively getting all his minions and MSM lackies to do so. Someimes I think Noonan is a mediocre precious little dimwit.
Obama is purebred shit and you have to be an idiot to find anything about this guy to admire.

Thanks, Peggy! You dern near redeemed yourself in that one commentary.
All the many points were solid. But that last one bears emphasis: If McCain doesn’t step up to the plate and defend Palin full force (and see to it that everyone else on his teams does so too), then we’ll make him history by the sheer magnitude of his November defeat.
Meanwhile, make my moose rare, thank you, with extra au jus
