Peggy Noonan on Palin: “A real and present danger to the American left”

More than any other reason, this is why McCain is finished if he dumps her. The sentiment is palpable among our readers; the desperate viciousness of some of the attacks on her really admits no other conclusion. If it works and the left beats her at the polls, Republicans will mourn, but if McCain hands them her scalp, god help him.
Because she jumbles up so many cultural categories, because she is a feminist not in the Yale Gender Studies sense but the How Do I Reload This Thang way, because she is a woman who in style, history, moxie and femininity is exactly like a normal American feminist and not an Abstract Theory feminist; because she wears makeup and heels and eats mooseburgers and is Alaska Tough, as Time magazine put it; because she is conservative, and pro-2nd Amendment and pro-life; and because conservatives can smell this sort of thing — who is really one of them and who is not — and will fight to the death for one of their beleaguered own; because of all of this she is a real and present danger to the American left, and to a future Obama candidacy.
She could become a transformative political presence.
So they are going to have to kill her, and kill her quick.
And it’s going to be brutal. It’s already getting there…
I think the left will go hard on this: Fringe. Radical. What goes on in her church? Isn’t she extreme? Does she really think God wants a pipeline? What does Sarah Barracuda really mean? They’re going to try and make her strange, outré, oddball. And not in a good way.
In all this, and in its involvement in this week’s ritual humiliation of a 17-year-old girl, the mainstream press may seriously overplay its hand, and court a backlash that impacts the election. More on that in a moment.
Follow the link and read that “more in a moment” for yourself. Even by Noonan’s standards, it’s a dynamite piece. What are the odds of the press overplaying its hand? Reasonably good: See, e.g., Jonathan Martin’s piece at Politico blithely dismissing conservative critiques of the nastiness of the coverage as pro forma GOP demagoguery hardly worth taking seriously. Even better, see this canny Mark Halperin flowchart of why there’s suddenly such a feeding frenzy around the Barracuda. It’s incomplete — Patterico and Jessica’s Well can fill in some of the blanks — but otherwise right on target. Purely rhetorical exit question: Of the two tracks Halperin lays out, which do you suppose reporters themselves are more passionately invested in?

Sorry for the cross-comment.
As Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain exclaimed when he was out-manned, yet rallied his troops with a text-book manuever that turned the tide of Gettysburg and saved the battle and quite possibly the Union:
So stand firm, lady from Alaska, for not once in a century are women permitted to bear such responsibility for freedom and justice, for God and humanity, as are now placed upon you.

I actually have a really good feeling about Palin’s speech tonight. With the way Fred was going, I have a feeling that Democrats across the country are going to be popping extra-strength aspirin the next morning.
Perhaps the next Morning in America.

We can never give in to the left – ever.
Because they will not.
They have a just terrible candidate. Completely inexperienced. Wholly corrupt.
Media will not investigate the pile of dung the Democrats are running.
But Palin?
Destroy her.
I have confidence that John McCain will not back down. He knows when he’s backed into a corner and he knows how to fight.

Isn’t it amazing that the Democrat Party, which was so proud of their woman VP candidate in 1984, with comparable if not less experience, is now so appalled that John McCain would select a female governor as his running mate? Equally amazing is the Democrats’ lack of concern that their presidential nominee, Barack Obama, has less experience than either of the two women vice-presidential nominees.

MC, I also have a great feeling about her speech. She is bright and very comfortable in front of supporters. Look at how she performed on the roll out speech; all the while knowing about her daughter’s pregnancy and how it would have to be exposed. Brave lady.

I admit, I thought about that.
However, in fairness, I felt the same about some nut trying to hurt Obama. Where passions arise, there is always danger of that passion going too far.
carbon_footprint on September 3, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Amen to that.
And remember that the very first Hail Mary pass did work. It was from Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson in a playoff game against the Vikings.
After the game Roger was asked what he was thinking and he said something like, ‘Oh, I just said a Hail Mary and threw it up there.’
Pearson caught it, and the Cowboys won the game.

Count me in as one of those who will fight to the death to defend Palin. While I could honestly say that there will be decisions of hers I do not agree with, the smears and the attacks on her daughter have gone beyond reason and I’m fed up.
I know I know, I won’t be throwing my body on a grenade but my money and my effort in defending her will make a difference.

jp on September 3, 2008 at 12:05 PM
It wasn’t textbook. Chamberlain ordered his men to mount bayonets and charge. That wasn’t textbook, even at that time.
It was just brave and audacious: that’s why it worked.
And I’m from the South.
I think that’s what we need to do if we’re going to win it. Stop with the complacency and the defensive posturing and go on the attack.

Palin IS one of us: a true conservative, a real woman with a real life with a real job with real accomplishments and the left is scared sh*tless.
I have never seen the left so threatened – they want her blood, and have gone so far as to actually ask for her DNA.
They see her for the threat she is, as do we. The question is: Do we allow their bloodlust to overpower our desire to right the country and protect our own? I am not going down without a FIGHT.

Only because Nawlins, the poster-hell-hole for Dems after a Dem gov and a Dem mayor fucked up beyond belief, was spared this time.
Had it been a direct hit, or had the levee collapsed again (as it will, give it time) the Repubs would have been vilified for something else.
This is recoverable – and better, it gives plenty of grist for the right to throw back in the MSM and Obama campaigns’ direction over the next 2 months.

McCain isn’t likely to respond well to the Lefts’ “strongly-worded letters” – he’s seen what a fully unbridled Left looks like, up close, in person, on the sharp end.
I do not expect him to engage a full-on frontal assault in response. This is a time for subtlety, not ranting, and while McCain is known as having a temper I suspect that, in this case, he’ll not be grabbing for the grenades.

The trick behind MSM feeding frenzy is that they are throwing at Palin everything that was thrown at Obama: inexperience, not properly vetted, no friend of Jews, exotic, etc etc. We know how deeply in tank for Obama the media is, so all the charges on Obama the media took very close to heart and they are paying back with interest.

Most, if not all, POTUS elections are presented as “defining moments” in American history, but this one fits. The unthinkable that so many are thinking about, McCain dropping Palin, would destroy the GOP for at least the next two or three election cycles.
The left is scared to death, and a wounded, cornered, frightened animal is dangerous beyond measure.
We must rise up and defend Palin in every venue possible. Serioiusly, this isn’t a friendly game of tug-o-war at the company picnic, it’s a battle for the soul of our country.

Herein lies one of the problems or areas of confusion. “Abstract Theory feminist” defines political feminism. This is why I say I am pro-woman, but I am an anti-feminist. It’s either time to redefine feminism (which may not be possible) or come up with a new term entirely. Palinism? I’m a Palinist, not a feminist?

Maybe, although it hasn’t worked so far, and I’d like to think he’s smart enough to blow up in absolute private (i.e. in one of the many bathrooms in one of his many houses….) as opposed to having a meltdown on the stage in MN.
The question is how much “theatre” is in McCains’ previous temper tantrums? It’s got to be at least part acting – maybe with some real emotions, but allowing them to surface can be a good tactic for some situations, suppressing them can be good for other situations.
I would like to think he’s finally figuring out just how the MSM works.
I cannot convince myself of this, and hope his handlers are better than he deserves – but I can hope.

Non-rhetorical answer: It doesn’t matter what GOP partisans think, but it does matter how the persuadables in the mushy middle see it. And the MSM is one of the few institutions less popular than politicians already. So the odds are very good that the MSM is badly overplaying their hand.

It is my sincerest hope that tonight, Sarah Palin will serve up the liberal left as well as the MSM a nice, piping hot cup of SHUT THE HELL UP!!!, as she launches into a barnburning speech that will burn the eyebrows right off of Howard Dean’s face, leave Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi virtually tongue tied and hanging out to dry, and have outfits like the NYT, DKos, and HuffPO thinking twice before they so much as post even the very mention of her name.
