Peggy Noonan: Let me explain

Just posted at the Journal. She claims “it’s over” was taken completely out of context via video editing, which, given her specificity as to what that part of the conversation was really about and the fact that this did, after all, come from MSNBC and TPM, seems at least reasonably plausible. Not sure I buy the explanation about narratives, though:
It was just after the 1988 Republican convention ended. I was on the plane, as a speechwriter, that took Republican presidential nominee George H.W. Bush, and the new vice presidential nominee, Dan Quayle, from New Orleans, the site of the convention, to Indiana. Sitting next to Mr. Quayle was the other senator from that state, Richard Lugar. As we chatted, I thought, “Why him and not him?” Why Mr. Quayle as the choice, and not the more experienced Mr. Lugar? I came to think, in following years, that some of the reason came down to what is now called The Narrative. The story the campaign wishes to tell about itself, and communicate to others. I don’t like the idea of The Narrative. I think it is … a barnyard epithet. And, oddly enough, it is something that Republicans are not very good at, because it’s not where they live, it’s not what they’re about, it’s too fancy. To the extent the McCain campaign was thinking in these terms, I don’t like that either. I do like Mrs. Palin, because I like the things she espouses. And because, frankly, I met her once and liked her. I suspect, as I say further in here, that her candidacy will be either dramatically successful or a dramatically not; it won’t be something in between.
That’s great, except that as I noted earlier, it’s precisely Palin’s narrative as the gun-toting, moose-hunting hockey mom that Noonan argued this morning has struck such fear into the left’s withered little heart. Quote: “Because she jumbles up so many cultural categories, because she is a feminist not in the Yale Gender Studies sense but the How Do I Reload This Thang way, because she is a woman who in style, history, moxie and femininity is exactly like a normal American feminist and not an Abstract Theory feminist; because she wears makeup and heels and eats mooseburgers and is Alaska Tough, as Time magazine put it; because she is conservative, and pro-2nd Amendment and pro-life; and because conservatives can smell this sort of thing — who is really one of them and who is not — and will fight to the death for one of their beleaguered own; because of all of this she is a real and present danger to the American left, and to the Obama candidacy.” It’s the narrative that terrifies them, in other words. In which case, if she doesn’t like narrative politics, what’s she doing trumpeting it in her column as some potential liberal giant-killer?

I don’t think her earlier column was specifically praising the Palin narrative but pointing out the difficulty the Democrats will have in pigeon-holing her. A subtle distinction, perhaps, but I am willing to give Peggy Noonan a pass on this one. She is not always right, but she is generally worth listening to. Also, she doesn’t seem to have thought about the Narrative issue until after she wrote that column and her comments on MSNBC were clearly off-the-cuff and more like thinking aloud.

That woman has more class than Harvard.
sven10077 on September 3, 2008 at 11:10 PM
It’s a little ironic that Palin’s line in her speech tonight about Obama can be reworked for Ms. Noonan if “Scranton” and “San Francisco” are replaced by “The Wall Street Journal” and “MSNBC”.
jon1979 on September 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM
She’s doing quite a bit of damage to a once-formidable reputation so far this month, isn’t she?
Unless Peggy’s just positioning herself for a low lottery number for next season’s Georgetown party lists…
Jaibones on September 3, 2008 at 11:14 PM
Yeah good subtle digs and I think she can either get the blue-bloods to go with her some if she ever gets clout in the future or coattail them home with Republicans of her own.
sven10077 on September 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM
So, Peggy.
Is it still over?
MadisonConservative on September 3, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Let me paraphrase Markos:
SCREW HER — LIAR!!!!!

Go away Peggy.

No Christmas card for her (Noonan) this year.
Thumbs up to Gov. Palin for a great speech tonight.
mindhacker on September 3, 2008 at 11:34 PM
Well, I think tonight Peggy is feeling a little, eh, comeuppish?
spmat on September 3, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Seems Peggy’s mouth may have outlived her soul.
petefrt on September 3, 2008 at 11:47 PM
You start hanging out with the political elites and you turn into one.
Noonan is dead to me.
ex-Democrat on September 3, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Peggy, maybe you should move out here to flyoverland for a while and get in touch with the real world. I think I can get you a job at our local paper.
flyoverland on September 3, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Feeling stupid right now, Peggy?
drjohn on September 3, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Stupid ignorant you-know-what. Palin has set the bar.
Drum on September 3, 2008 at 11:51 PM
A better explanation is this …
Women are always judging other women harder than they would a man.
TexasDude on September 3, 2008 at 11:52 PM
You are playing checkers for 60 days; I am playing chess for a decade or more. I am merely forecasting your disappointment in the future. Nice name calling – thanks for admitting you can’t argue.
Can.Utility on September 4, 2008 at 12:00 AM
So True Drum … Peggy will have trouble limboing under the bar that Sarah has set. Go Sarah’Cuda.
ORrighty on September 4, 2008 at 12:01 AM
Hey Peggy… scoreboard.
discerningtexan on September 4, 2008 at 12:02 AM
You know I had to, pete.
Jaibones on September 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Peggy suffers from elitist dementia. Do we not have retirement homes for tired old ladies who can’t look after themselves?
revolution on September 4, 2008 at 12:08 AM
I can, an Obama victory with a 2 year liberal bobsled course guided by truer ideologues than Gephardt and Daschle will not waste time constructing a massive new house of entitlement cards that make a GOP resurgence less meaningful because dismantling the goody tree will be suicide until the economy is imploding because of the spending. This ticket with our effort can stem the flow and eventually be turned lightly right each election.
sven10077 on September 4, 2008 at 12:08 AM
I’m done with you Noonan. Your EXACTLY what’s been wrong with the Republican Party for the last 10 years. Don’t let the Party door hit you in your elitist Belt-way ass.
FiveWays on September 4, 2008 at 12:41 AM
Noonan proving that it really is “us and them” with respect to journalists and the rest of America.
JeffB. on September 4, 2008 at 12:59 AM
Noonan explaining? Now that’s cynical…
DfDeportation on September 4, 2008 at 1:20 AM
I happen to agree with that. I am not throwing Peggy under the bus. She has been a staunch conservative and contributed too much to this party to do that. You all do what you want. I’ll stand by Peggy though I think this was really bad form for her.
Glynn on September 4, 2008 at 1:36 AM
Palin has raised the bar.
Johan Klaus on September 4, 2008 at 1:38 AM
I have no idea why people even consider Peggy Noonan a conservative in the first place. It seems like anybody who ever worked for Ronald Reagan claims to have a lifetime pass to say whatever the Hell crazy crap they want and have everyone who calls himself “conservative” bow down to them.
Well, no. You are what you do – or say.
Noonan’s “explanation” is gobbledygook. What was captured on the mic was telling; not because it showed a bias – it’s possible for someone who deeply loves Sarah Palin to (albeit mistakenly) think she’s a poor strategic choice.
What that snippet of conversation showed me is how incredibly ARROGANT these people are. The “analysis” the twits were doing was downright puerile, but they spoke in conclusive terms. Like they knew something the average person didn’t. But they’re nothing but a bunch of feebs. They’re arrested adolescents who bounce sophomoric catch phrases like “Narrative” back and forth among themselves and act like it has some kind of incredibly deep meaning. And it’s all nothing but a pseudo-intellectual circle jerk.
logis on September 4, 2008 at 2:10 AM
Allow me to quote from Sarah Palin’s speech last night…
You know, Peggy, we don’t know quite what to think about a commentator who lavishes praise on ordinary Republicans when we are listening, and then talks about how close minded and xenophobic we are when we are not listening. We tend to prefer commentators who don’t talk about us one way in their columns and another way when they are trying to suck up to the media establishment…
gridlock2 on September 4, 2008 at 4:40 AM
Peg’s country club, Sarah’s gun club.
Any questions?
SuperCool on September 4, 2008 at 4:45 AM
noonan’s articles always have a whiff of condescension and elitism to them. She is alway a little too holier then thou and lecturing for me. Seems her true colors have shown.
And how stupid could these people be not to realize that since the jesse jackson thing no conservatives mike has been turned off at cnn and msnbc until they were in their limo on the way home.
peacenprosperity on September 4, 2008 at 6:19 AM
Yeah, basically, this “narrative,” (anyone want to talk about how dehumanizing this is in the first place?) is mine, as well. Whatever you want to call it, she looks and sounds a lot like me. I also agree that this is good feminism in REALITY, rather than theory. Funny how liberals cannot tolerate any deviation from their brand. I digress…
Another thing I find curious: why denigrate republicans in assuming we can’t “do” narrative like the other side. Like, we excel in one-dimensional politics and cannot go toe-to-toe with mock-intellectual nuance thrown at us day and night? please.
Fact is, if we wanted a “narrative,” we managed to get it…and a real one at that.
Mommypundit on September 4, 2008 at 6:35 AM
Peggy, a big swing and a miss! Go vote for Obama! We no longer need you!
sabbott on September 4, 2008 at 8:04 AM
Peggy who?
BadBrad on September 4, 2008 at 9:11 AM
It seems that some cannot seem to see it that way. As for me, I adore her and anyone who says she is not a real conservative has not read any of her books or followed her career at all. So let’s just drive her completely out of the party! Off with her head!
Glynn on September 4, 2008 at 9:11 AM
I never thought McCain would get my vote. I’ll take him to get her. We may be looking at a female president in 2012, but not the one we thought. Watch your back Sara.
I realize she didn’t write that speech but it was a knock-out.
Ernest on September 4, 2008 at 9:14 AM
I didn’t bother reading the link, but today’s UK, leftist rag, the Guardian, has a story playing up “conservative commentators attack Palin” or the like. So the Left was listening too.
andycanuck on September 4, 2008 at 9:22 AM
Palin didn’t just get handed a sheaf of paper with instructions to “read this out loud”…..she was intimately involved. All serious figures are – it’s how the job gets done right.
The tone and style of that speech was 100% Palin. A professional speechwriter most likely (although not necessarily – there are people that DIY) massaged the entire piece to sculpt it for maximum effect.
This “Palin didn’t write the speech” murmur is yet another underhanded attempt to slur her competencies. Every serious politician employs speechwriters….yet we never have this fact shoved under our noses when there’s a johnson in the underpants……curiouser and curiouser.

Closet liberal wanting desperately to come out of the closet to prove to the other media pundits she is really one of them.
In November will she vote for Obama?

This is the same Peggy Noonan who said that Jeremiah Wright’s congregants didn’t agree with his racism, when the video clearly showed otherwise. She wanted to ignore the Rev. Wright stuff, adn she’s a fraud.
All of her BS boring touchy-feely columns are all about narrative. That’s all this talentless hack-ette does. Maybe she’s mad another woman is now living it. I never understood the unearned hype over this woman. Glad the rest of you are finally seeing the light on this human cauldron of fertilizer.
Debbie Schlussel on September 4, 2008 at 10:46 AM
I think Peggy is jealous. 20 years ago she was Reagan’s go to girl for speechwriting. She feels left out. This is sad. Time to retire Peggy. Do one of us from The Enterprise need to come speak to you?
bill30097 on September 4, 2008 at 10:57 AM
I don’t think Noonan has been in the “Closet” for Obama at all. Her articles all through the primaries have been full of Obama praises.
She is just another establishment journalist who is offended by Gov. Palins selection.
Maybe this won’t work like so many experts are saying. But at least it was better than the alternatives (Giuliani, Mitt, Ridge, Lieberman).
Gov. Palin hit a grand slam. It isn’t the game winner, but it scored some runs.
CinC on September 4, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Yikes! Get down, she isn’t shooting blanks!
CinC on September 4, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Noonan is a liar. She’s been caught with her pants and her granny-panties down and she’s trying to scramble for a shred of credibility.
She does not deserve it. She has long deserved to be ridiculed in the public square and this does not come at a moment too soon.
pabarge on September 4, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Peggy…I hear they’re hiring at MSNBC.
You are the past, Noonan. Sara’cuda is the future.
HornetSting on September 4, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Credit where it’s due. You’re right.
And Noonan has been knobbing Obama for so long, now, he probably owes her palimony.
