New McCain ad: “Alaska Maverick”

posted at 1:22 pm on September 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

Surprisingly dull given the frenzy of Barracudamania, but then the point isn’t to build her up so much as it is to tear The One down. They’ve got a second contrast ad coming later today focusing on their comparative experience. The one virtue of having the media spin her as dangerously unqualified, of course, is that it leaves McCain wide open for ads like this, treating Barry to a little vicarious ridicule for his absurdly thin record. Something like 70 percent of voters say the VP candidates won’t affect their votes in November; if Palin is deemed too green to be trusted but some of that rubs off on Obama in the process, it may well be a worthy trade.

Exit question: Are Obama’s people actually coming after Palin on pork? After Captain Earmark tried to stuff his fat face with federal money last year and voted — together with Biden — not to shift the money for the bridge to nowhere to Katrina relief?

Does a Bear poop in the Woods?

Did you see Greta last night?

They had some head of the DNC up there and he claimed that Obama running for the office is what makes him qualified. Greta almost laughed in his face. Biden is twice as qualified as Obama based upon that sort of experience.

lorien1973 on September 3, 2008 at 1:26 PM

If Gov. Palin was pro-abortion the media would make her out to be the Virgin Mary to Obama’s Messiah comparison.

Forget the fact that she was an elected offical when Obama was a community organizer visiting Ayers and helping create slums for minorities to live in. Gov. Palin has more leadership experience with almost 12 years of Executive leadership in political office compared to Obama’s Zero!

azcop on September 3, 2008 at 1:27 PM

I think it’s a great strategy for McCain to draw the #1 on their ticket into a fight over comparative experience with the #2 on his ticket. It just highlights how his experience pales against McCain’s, and at the same time, since he’s drawn into the fight, he’s essentially admitting that experience matters.

thirteen28 on September 3, 2008 at 1:28 PM

Don’t give up, don’t back down, never give in.

Once again, you are fighting for your country, Sen. McCain, against foreign enemies – our own fifth column media.

And if Obama manages to steal this election, carry the fight on. No concession to the Democrats. Barack Obama will never be a legitimate President.

Strangle an Obama administration in the crib. Impeach and remove Obama from office in chains, for his inevitable crimes.

The man has terrorist ties and is up to his armpits in dirty money. If the media would do its job instead of chasing around 17 year olds, Obama would be locked up in Leavenworth and on trial for his life.

azcop on September 3, 2008 at 1:29 PM

I don’t like this ad much. If this turns into an election of Sarah Palin vs. Barack Obama, we lose. The only way this ad makes sense is if it starts with Obama’s own words about Palin. Although if this is the leading edge of a new attack on Obama as a Chicago corruptocrat, I’m all for it.

rockmom on September 3, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Dull?

Maybe so. I think it’s smart though, continuing the comparison a VP candidate to a P candidate makes the other party look weak and unprepared.

I’m with Allah’s take. Nice for a starter, but overall kinda lightweight. The “Liberal” quote is exceptionally weak when they had so much more to choose from there. The independents don’t care about titles and the Democrats that could vote against The One won’t be influenced.

Looking forward to round two.

Wish I saw that.

And in addition to ‘running for president qualifies you to be president,’ they are also peddling the BS that Obama is executive in chief worthy because millions of people have given him millions of dollars, and he’s managing and spending all of their money.

And if and when Obama is president, he will be managing and spending millions of our money too. In the form of asking his buddies in congress to increase our taxes and so he can spend it on all of the things he promised at his acceptance speech. You know, the speech streamed on the fox website (situation room) where Michael Steele kept saying “how” every time Obama promised something new.

Future ads need to drive this point home. Even if Obama is marginally more qualified (he isn’t, but conceeding that point for the sake of argument), He’s still the Presidential candidate while Palin is the VP candidate.

If their P is only marginally better than our VP, then they are toast.

MarkTheGreat on September 3, 2008 at 1:35 PM

rockmom on September 3, 2008 at 1:30 PM

Y’know, I don’t think it will, but if it does, I’m not at all sure that will be the outcome. The election already probably hinges on her speech tonight. If she hits it out of the park, then the media’s bashing of her the past few days is going to backfire in a way I’ve never seen in my lifetime.

If she sounds as I’ve seen her in interviews, calm and assured and engaging and extremely competent, then goes out and makes the country fall in love with her on Leno and Letterman and even with Stewart, then everyone who wants new won’t have to have a Harvard snob to serve it up.

And if all that happens, yeah, I’ll take Sarah vs. Barry, even up.

Of course, she does have to hit it out. But there are people in this world who relish a challenge and people who shrink form one; people who rise to the occasion and people who don’t.

I’m betting I know which group she’s in.

Harry Reid weighs in – through his spokesman from “somewhere”.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said, “Sen. Reid was very disappointed in Sen. Lieberman’s speech … especially when he appeared to go out of his way to distort Sen. Obama’s record of bipartisan achievements in the Senate. He can give all the partisan speeches he wants, but as the American people have made very clear, the last thing this country needs is another four years of the same old failed Bush/McCain polices of the past.”

Disappointed. Distort. Bipartisan achievements… oh here’s a good one: the same old failed Bush/McCain policies. Apparently Bush and McCain were co-presidents for 8 years. Who knew?

PS: Pelosi has been spirited away to Japan. Out of sight out of mind I guess.

OT: And the lies continue: Some Jamal idiot (DNCC) on Fox News Live Desk saying McCain talked to Palin Wed night, decided Thursday. Of course, no rebuttal by Martha the talking head. She just lets him spout off the list of lying talking points (you already know them) and she moves on to the next “expert.” I have gotta get a new addiction!

I’ve got a rumor: “What if Obama wins and becomes President?”

jp on September 3, 2008 at 1:45 PM

Are Obama’s people actually coming after Palin on pork?

Well, let’s take a stroll down memory hole lane. Remember back in 2004 a little election in Illinois? One of the candidates was divorced and had sealed the records. The Chicago Tribune and a Chicago TV station filed lawsuits to get the records unsealed. Who was behind these lawsuits? Which candidate did it benefit?

Can we draw any parallels to today?

Barack Obama’s backers emailed reporters about the divorce controversy, but refrained from on-the-record commentary about the divorce files. On March 29, 2004, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider ruled that several of the Ryans’ divorce records should be opened to the public, and ruled that a court-appointed referee would later decide which custody files should remain sealed to protect the interests of Ryan’s young child. The following week, on April 2, 2004, Barack Obama changed his position about the Ryans’ soon-to-be-released divorce records, and called on Democrats to not inject them into the campaign. The Ryan campaign characterized Obama’s shift as hypocritical, because Obama’s backers had been emailing reports about the divorce records prior to Judge Schnider’s decision.

Now if a certain unmentionable candidate could stoop this low during a previous election, what’s to stop him from continuing his hypocritical positions?

It seems like a pattern. Hmmmm…….

She has been a real governor, he hasn’t. She’s been in charge of the Alaskan National Guard, he hasn’t. She was a whistleblower who defeated an incumbent mayor. He has never once shown that kind of courage. She’s a whistleblower who turned in the chairman of her own party and got him fined $12,000. I’ve never seen Obama do one thing like that. She took on the incumbent governor of her own party and beat him, and then she beat a former Democratic governor in the general election. Schlafly told WND McCain’s choice of Palin was the best he could possibly have made.

“Sarah Palin has reinvigorated the entire Republican Party,” she said. “And it’s across the board. It’s not just pro-lifers. She’s a breath of fresh air. She’s right on every issue.”

Feminists, Schlafly said, portray women as victims who live in “an oppressive patriarchal society.”

“You can see the women we’ve got here don’t buy that,” Schlafly said. “Sarah Palin will appeal to women and men. She’s likable, just like Hillary isn’t.”

Magoo,

As good as that would feel, it would be the wrong approach. There’s still enough truth left in the “Don’t attack someone who buys ink by the barrel” statement yet.

Much, much better to fight back with sweetness and politeness. Let the bloggers (who are buying ink by the gallon now…) carry the war for a bit.

Just … after the election, remember who’s who and grant interviews and replies to press corps meetings appropriately.

(And will someone please check to see if Helen Thomas is still breathing? I think she may have become a zombie, and *NOT* the good kind!)

Given the “frenzy of Barracudamania,” many may find a good old “dull” political ad something of a relief.

CK MacLeod on September 3, 2008 at 1:59 PM

There’s a lot more ammunition available than is used in this ad.

Don’t go wobbly on us, John.

This is a war on American values by the media elite. Fight harder for us, please.

If a man is alone in a forest and does something wrong without a woman there to tell him, is he still wrong?

upinak on September 3, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Yes, but he won’t know it.

Frozen Tex on September 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

If Camp McCain has two of these ready to roll, it tells you they very much want to bait the left into an Obama vs. Palin argument, which inherently diminishes Obama.

Karl on September 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Now if a certain unmentionable candidate could stoop this low during a previous election, what’s to stop him from continuing his hypocritical positions?

It seems like a pattern. Hmmmm…….

Regrettably, that’s how it’s done here in Chicagoland. Dirty campaigning, any nastiness in the background gets aired in the news outlets, and if there isn’t any dirt, they’ll be happy to manufacture some for ya.

And that’s the “nice” approach. The “gloves off” approach is far more direct.

If guns are outlawed, can we use swords? I have none of the former (no license either) but three of the latter.

Grue in the Attic on September 3, 2008 at 1:55 PM

Swords? Really?

Reminds me of this….

Sean Connery: Uh.. I’ll take “Swords” for $400.

Alex Trebek: It’s actually not “Swords”.. these are words that begin with “S”. The answer is: “Popeye is this sort of man”. [ Reynolds buzzes in ] Burt Reynolds.

Burt Reynolds: What is.. Popeye?

Alex Trebek:
[ sighs ] No. [ Connery buzzes in ] Sean Connery. And, remember, these are words that begin with the letter “S”, i>not “Swords”.

Sean Connery:
[ bangs podium, thinking ] Saber!

Alex Trebek:
No.

Sean Connery:
It began with a bloody “S”!

*********************************

Alex Trebek: [ shakes head ] Okay, let’s just move on. Burt, can you please pick a category?

Sean Connery: [ whispering ] Pick “Swords”.

Burt Reynolds: Yeah, sure, give me “Swords”.

Alex Trebek:
[ annoyed ] It’s “‘S’ Words”! “‘S’ Words”! And, for how much, Mr. Reynolds?

Burt Reynolds: Aw, hell, let’s go nuts, “Swords” for $48,000!

Alex Trebek:
We’re not doing “Swords”! You know what, why don’t we just move on to Final Jeopardy? The category is “Bodies of Water”. “This body of water gave Salt Lake City it’s name.” [ Final Jeopardy music plays, answers are written ] And, time is up. “This body of water gave Salt Lake City it’s name.” Sean Connery, you wrote.. [ screen reads "Swords" ] ..”Swords”. And you wagered.. [ screen shows lines ] ..what appears to be a Roman Numeral Seven.

Sean Connery: That’s an “M”!

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 3, 2008 at 2:07 PM

By the way, where’s Cheney been lately?

Funny you should ask….

Answer:
Rigging election voting booths around the country to “steal another election”. He’s a little bushed having worked overtime to get the Russians into Georgia and manipulating storm systems. Oh, and just in case….stoking racial hatred.

Elliot Ness-style campaigning?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 3, 2008 at 2:08 PM

“Regrettably, that’s how it’s done here in Chicagoland.”

They also steal money with both hands there and take kickbacks from known criminals.

Both of which Barack Obama has done.

‘Course that’s not important when there’s a 17 year old girl’s sex life in question.

We don’t have a media in this country, we have DNC errand boys and girls.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison to Obama’s scope of respnsibility and Palin’s:

OBAMA PALIN

First Public Office 1997 1992

Positions Held State Senate City Council;
Mayor

Current Office 2005 2006

Days On Job (Before 143 days 624 days
Seeking Higher Office)

Responsibility Shared Sole
(One of 100
Senators)

Employees ??? 24,000

Budget Authority No Yes

Veto Authority No Yes

Judicial Appointments No Yes

Senatorial Replacement No Yes
Authority

Pardons, Clemency No Yes

Law Enforcement No Yes
Authority

Commander-In-Chief No Yes
* AK Natl Guard
* AK Air Natl Guard
* AK State Defense
Force

Fact is, Obama has a made a career of hiding in large groups and not being personally held accountable for anything… but always keeping in the spotlight, with his eye on the next prize. Palin has effectively been the CEO of a $10B business… with a track record for improving operations at every level in which she’s served along the way.

How close are Sarah and husband Todd to the Alaskan Independence Party [AIP]…?

Succession from the Union of the United States of America…?

Is she really that much of a
Maverick…?

I would say more of a “tempest in a teapot”.

However; than there’s this…

“The smart money thinks there’s a better chance today than yesterday that John McCain will dump Sarah Palin as his running mate.
