McCain ad: “Recovery”

posted at 5:45 pm on September 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Perhaps that better describes the McCain campaign’s communications since returning from the Gulf on Tuesday.  After a quiet few days, the campaign has generated a series of advertisements pressing John McCain’s case with the American electorate.  This ad actually focuses on Ohio, which has had a tougher time economically than most of the rest of the nation.  The negative ad blames Democrats and their energy policy for the problem:

It’s a smart ad, and McCain needs to make this more of a national push. The more he talks about energy, the further he can erode Barack Obama’s formidable lead on the economy. Not only does McCain’s policy represent the mainstream for the American electorate, it also underscores his pragmatic appeal. Barack Obama speaks in almost philosophical and almost exclusively conceptual themes on just about any policy position. McCain, on the other hand, pursues realistic and pragmatic solutions, and no more so than on energy policy, in which he has taken the “kitchen sink” approach.

It’s good to see the McCain campaign get back on track with its series of ads today.

The more he talks about energy, the further he can erode Barack Obama’s formidable lead on the economy.

I don’t get why Obama has a lead on the economy in the first place. He has no personal expertise. He has essentially promised higher taxes. He’s not in favor of increased domestic energy production. He’s proposing all kinds of obscenely expensive new programs that he has not explained how he’ll pay for. He has not addressed the coming crisis in unfunded entitlement commitments. He’s proposed no viable, concrete plan for the economy at all.

What kind of uninformed idiots do they poll who think Obama is better on the economy by any stretch of the imagination?

Oh, and good ad.

aero on September 3, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Barack Obama IS out of touch. At least John McCain has to PAY for his private jet and he KNOWS how expensive the fuel is.

We MUST drill NOW and ramp up our oil and gasoline production while we develop our alternative energy. WHY should we get our refined gas from Canada? We need to refine it here, refine it now and THAT will reduce costs and reduce the price of gasonline to Americans.

Pay Americans to build refineries, pay Americans to work in the refineries and PAY Americans to build the oil infrstructure.

Need to get some Sarah Palin, or better, First Dude camera time on this.

(scene 1) First Dude, on a lawnchair, next to a snowmobile, in ANWR.
“Welcome to the American National Wildlife Refuge. There’s oil under here. Oil we don’t have to ship in from the Middle East. Oil we don’t have to pipe up from South America.”

(scene 2) First Dude, in the same lawnchair, next to the pipeline, herd of caribou in the background. “Those guys don’t mind the pipeline. In fact, they like it. (places hand on pipeline) It’s warm, you see – has to be, or the oil would gum up and not flow – and that lets the herd survive the harsh winters”

(scene 3) First Dude, in the same lawnchair, back in ANWR “No caribou around here. No trees, nothing but ice and rock.”

…..

I want to see and honest oil commercial. One that compares the 8.5% “windfall profits” that oil companies make to the margins of oooohhhhh…

- Hollywood studios
- IT companies
- “Green” technology companies

Then talk about how profits are are reinvested to pay for things like jobs and 10 year environmental studies on how a new building to house all those jobs will impact the flight of geese.

Nice to see this ad running in Ohio.

Unfortunately, Governor Strickland(D) is in the pocket of the unions across Ohio. And the unions are in the pocket of the Dem Party. Strickland is politics as usual. Ohio has a history of that sort of thing. Which is why Ohio is a shell of what it once was, even a decade or two ago…and its getting worse, generally.

Around here, they want to uncap oil wells that haven’t been pumped for decades. (Ohio a century ago was the biggest oil boom state around.) Still have oil, and a ton of coal. But try to get a permit to go after it from the State and feds…hope you have a ton of money to get the permits and do all the legal stuff. Strickland’s answer? Invite graduates of Ohio colleges to “come home.” Try to invite them back to start their businesses and such. No thought given as to why they left.

[As for ethanol...the subsidies for corn growers have made a lot of farmers ungodly rich this past year. Not a lot of corn available as animal feed or for food production, but plenty for ethanol.]

McCain’s getting on the right track. He needs more ads with the faces of Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, Feinstein, Boxer who all look like cadavers along with their depressing, no-nothing quotes juxtaposed with Republicans, especially some of the young bloods like Palin who represent optimism and the “can do”, American spirit.

McCain Saw Reagan become Pres. he should know to fire full torpedoes on the greatness of Americans and their ability to overcome adversity and prosper. Positive, positive, positive wins the race and builds up the country where liberalism can only exist in a negative atmosphere.

Keep pushing the word ‘liberal,’ RNC. I wish someone over there would ridicule the Marxist failures calling themselves ‘progressives.’

“You call that progress?” would be a great tagline for an ad on nearly any subject, social or fiscal.

The national economy is running a healthy 3% annual–the problem is that there are a number of over-unionized, over regulated and over-taxed states that aren’t doing so well.

And, as near as I can tell, I just moved from one on one coast to another on the other coast.

If the McCain campaign is smart it will begin and end every ad with a picture if Obama and Pelosi. They are, after all, the two most powerful Democrats in the country. McCain may have a female running mate, but whoever gets elected will be dealing with Pelosi.
