Excerpts from Palin speech: Small town, and proud of it

posted at 7:17 pm on September 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The RNCC just released excerpts of Sarah Palin’s speech, scheduled for delivery tonight, and it appears they have chosen the high road in re-introducing the Alaskan Governor to the nation.  According to the clips, she plans to defend small-town America and its values, and stress her role as an outsider in reforming the political culture in Washington DC. However, she won’t ignore the steady stream of smears that flew out of the commentariat this week, either:

“I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids’ public education better. When I ran for city council, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities. …

“I’m not a member of the permanent political establishment. And I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone. But here’s a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinion – I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this country. …

“Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems – as if we all didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all. Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines…build more nuclear plants…create jobs with clean coal…and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity, and produced by American workers. …

“Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.”

Republicans are relishing this opportunity. If the media thought that the GOP would get squeamish over barbs coming from the punditry, they will have those notions disabused tonight. McCain and Palin have no intention of backing down, nor of kissing up to the Beltway elite.

Keep an eye on this speech, and the reaction tonight. Palin brings her own fighting spirit to a presidential candidate known for his own willingness to take risks in engagement with their own party and with those who argue for business as usual. Voters will identify with the Palins much sooner than with the Beltway insiders.

Another reason the media is so angry: Saracuda is a phenomenon not of their own creation, unlike Obama.

I actually thought that’s what I said. The writers make the words sound pretty.

I actually heard they had this generic speech written for like Mitt or that other guy (which thankfully I never have to learn about, snore) And they really had to tweak that speech because she is not at all what they expected.

Yah, me neither. But this is better.

In fact, Obama, Hillary and Bill didn’t write their own glorious autobiographies.

“What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us.

Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ‘This was their finest hour.”

It was something about a convict not getting the right therapy he was demanding. The fact is that most prisons don’t seem to be as well run as they should be – not by a long shot. Did you know for example that a lot of times they don’t even have very many different cable channels? I have even heard that when you try to leave, someone stops you. The places are miserable to live in. The worst thing I heard is that sometimes those places can be dangerous because of the people they attract. There are often a lot of VERY violent people all living in the same location.

It appears that even the prisons in Alaska are not any better than those in the contiguous states. Makes me think that Palin wasn’t even trying to make them more comfortable. Some governor, huh?

Mormon Doc on September 3, 2008 at 8:15 PM

Can we flip the Republican ticket?

DfDeportation on September 3, 2008 at 7:45 PM

LOL! Although I must admit, I have a new level of respect for John McCain and the way he’s standing by his VP nominee. He’s shown a lot of class and courage.

Dariaanne on September 3, 2008 at 8:19 PM

Maybe when Alaska starts paying it’s own way instead of suckling at the federal government welfare teat…but not until then.

alphie on September 3, 2008 at 8:11 PM

You are going to LOVE Sarah, because that is exactly what she’s been trying to do.

PETS ARE SLAVES!!!!

Isn’t that what PETA says? I look forward to serving our new liberal masters so I am trying to get my schtick down.

I think McCain should introduce her to Sheriff Joe. You know tent city? In Arizona even in 116 degree heat. Yes, John knows all about that stuff. (Sheriff Joe went to NH to campaign for Mitt a bit of bad blood there)

petunia on September 3, 2008 at 8:22 PM

And what evidence do you have that Palin is a “rube”, alphie?

mikeyboss on September 3, 2008 at 8:22 PM

Everyone get their bricks and urine ready to throw at me…

“I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

Damiano says… weak.

She lowers the role of Chief Executive of a town to that of a wannabe lobbyist.

Damianomatic Political Speech Fixer says:

“I guess you could say that I got my start in a form of community organizing, except in Alaska we call it the PTA.”

maybe it’ll go better with her delivery…the mockery needs to be subtle or Keef’ll die on air.

I like the line but now it’s out there it won’t have the impact it might have. But I said community organizing sounded like the PTA myself. Or maybe private social work where they apply for grants.

But even then he doesn’t seem to have accomplished anything worth touting. So basically, he was a failed community organizer. I mean did he make a difference at all? Why don’t they have testimonials. It is all just hype.

petunia on September 3, 2008 at 8:31 PM

she plans to defend small-town America and its values, and stress her role as an outsider in reforming the political culture in Washington DC. However, she won’t ignore the steady stream of smears that flew out of the commentariat this week

Hope and change only works in Washington if it’s not hope and change.

Mr_Magoo on September 3, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Just took the TV off of mute so I could watch Michele Bachman on O’Reilly, another GOP rising star! :)

As for Bill, I’m surprised he didn’t ask her to produce an itinerary of her every waking moment while juggling marriage, motherhood and career. But she handled him with wit and confidence, while also pointing out the blatant liberal hypocrisy of Sally Quinn and others, as evidenced by their newfound “respect” and “admiration” for full-time mothers.

Dariaanne on September 3, 2008 at 8:38 PM

She can’t be a success. She’s never been ordained by the MSM. Doesn’t she realize she’s in Washington to kiss the ring of the media elite and to court their favor? What’s this crap about serving the public? Sounds like a radical to me!

GarandFan on September 3, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Those excerpts give me just the reassurance I needed

pappy on September 3, 2008 at 8:44 PM

“Here’s how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.”

Now this is a good line. There is mileage to be gotten out of this.

And I agree with those who have been so courteous as to withhold the tomatoes for my criticism. Good or bad will mostly depend on delivery.

I am keeping an eye out for lines that can be spun against here though. There has never been a candidate in history who is more open to negative punditry. One wrong line will be repeated and spun by the media and Obama for eternity.

So far, it looks like there are no “100 years” or “5 million dollar” statements that can be ripped out of context.

Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 8:47 PM

Watching Chris Matthew’s right now and he’s accusing Palin of picking a fight with the media. LOL

CanadianGuy on September 3, 2008 at 7:28 PM

I saw that idiot Matthews too, and had to laugh out loud at his crap about how it’s the media’s duty to dig up every bit of dirt it can find on national candidates, so it can inform the American public about those candidates’ character and integrity.

How many months was presidential candidate John Edwards touring the country last year with his friggin’ mistress on his campaign payroll, while at the same time Edwards was giving interviews with his wife Elizabeth, claiming she’s the one great love of his life, and even having the media photograph their renewal of vows ceremony? Meanwhile, Edwards has fathered a child by his mistress, has paid off one of his campaign staffers to falsely claim the baby is his, is using one of his campaign’s political fixers to pay off both the mistress and the lying staffer . . . and the MSM isn’t interested in reporting any of this stuff.

Who are these idiots trying to kid?
