Awful: Peggy Noonan, Mike Murphy caught on open mike about Palin

I wonder how this little interstitial made its way from MSNBC to TPM. Oh well. Fox nailed Jesse Jackson talking about Obama this way, so turnabout’s fair play.
Simply awful, not only for Palin as a vote of no confidence (“it’s over”) ahead of the big speech from someone respected on the right but for Noonan herself as evidence that she lies to her readers. Remember, the column this morning that I stupidly praised was all about how compelling Palin’s narrative is and how dangerous it might prove to the left. See for yourself what she really thinks of the narrative approach. She also says, “Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work.” You’ll see that nuance somewhat refined here too.
I’m sending you to Politico to watch it because it’s a little hard to decipher what’s being said and they have a transcript. Exit quotation from Noonan’s op-ed: “Palin’s friends should be less immediately worried about what the Obama campaign will do to her than what the McCain campaign will do.” Or what Republican pundits will do, I guess. Click the image to watch.
Update: Noonan updates at the Journal to say she was taken out of context.

Liebs is hardcore left except for the war. And yeah, Tucker supports RP, but he’s a libertarian, not one of the crazies that we associate w/ RP. He loved Tancredo too, and he isn’t for a Iraq pullout or a Truther. He is a hard core small gov guy though.

Apparently, you havent read my post very clearly. I said IF the allegation is true. I didnt say it WAS true. I hope that it isnt true. But the Edwards story WAS true and many people with reflect on the fact that the recent Edwards allegation panned out. So, the timing is unfortunate. That was my point. This is worthy of it’s own thread (the topic). I disagree with you MadisonConservative. I think you are in equal poor taste in attacking the other poster based on your moral-card baiting. I am no fan of Buchanan mind you, but I am less of a fan of people who take morally volatile issues as shields of righteousness to stifle others. Which is what you are doing.

Considering the “fatuous suck-uppery” video from the other day, and considering the state of things at MSNBC, you’ve got to think that the video leaker’s might have been the near enemy – Noonan, Murphy, other “conservatives” at MSNBC – rather than the far one. Regardless of the intention, it’s mMuch, much more harmful to Noonan and Murphy, personally and professionally, than to McCain and Palin politically and electorally. It’ll be interesting to see whether the former two feel compelled to reply somehow, and whether MSNBC will be forced to let them do so.
Not that it’s worth thinking about very muchy, but I’ll also say it would be helpful to know exactly when this tape was made, and to hear a little more about what the two really thought they were saying and think now. Krauthammer, for instance, has gone from his kneejerk reaction (”near-suicidal”) to something much more thoughtful.

Elizabetty on September 3, 2008 at 6:44 PM
Hmmmnn…In that stream of consciousness-style column of Noonan’s this morning I detect some conflicting feelings. Acknowledging that she is a “bubblehead” out of touch with smalltown America tells me she knows that she’s a snob. I guess that those repressed feelings just popped up on open mic. Palin’s problem with people like these is that she’s just hasn’t sucked-up to the party elders and Washington insiders, “paid her dues” perhaps, the naughty little hick.
I notice that the wannabe sophisticates in my liberal town (Austin) are at great pains to distance themselves from the “rednecks” here in Texas. As a non-white foreigner (with a posh British accent, haha) I find that both telling and amusing.

OFFICIAL RESPONSE FROM THE ENQUIRER AFTER THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN THREATENED LEGAL ACTION:
“The National Enquirer’s coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin’s extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor’s daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards’ exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign’s vetting process. Despite the McCain camp’s attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum.”

All right, I grant you that my comparison was inaccurate. Shall we say less conservative than McCain?
As for Tucker, a lot of Ron Paul supporters like Hunter, Tancredo, and Thompson. However, when the guy is the headliner of a Ron Paul convention, I get very suspicious about his real leanings. MSNBC doesn’t seem to like hiring conservatives that don’t shoot themselves in the foot.

And they do suck at imitating Demos. The sooner they stop trying to imitate Demos the better. Enough of this reaching across the aisle BS.

I don’t know Joe as well as Tucker, so yeah, I’ll take moderate Republican. I didn’t follow his career until after the fact, so the coverage is…um, not always to be believed.
As to Tucker, MSNBC fired him. Mostly for challenging the stupid-ass anti-Bush guests. But he is a straight shooter. It’s not like they brought him in as a KO conservative. He sure isn’t that. He is a very smart guy who understands the inner gears in Washington.
Don’t forget Joe and Tucker are the ones that made the McCain commerical: the 9th grade love one – they mock the cult of personality.

Not surprised one bit. Her career has been built on writing speeches. She’s a pro on writing anything, she made Reagan look great. Why would you believe or care about her columns?
She’s a talented writer, that’s all and I hope this gets out there and more people know about what she said. What a great career she’s had, let it be over for her too, if she can’t write what she really feels. Who needs to read her columns if they are lies, we have enough of that going on as it is.

Roger Waters on September 3, 2008 at 6:51 PM
I’m not sure what Noonan said qualifies her earlier comments as lying to her readers, Allah.
I read her piece as saying that Palin could be a brilliant pick or a stupid one and, without answering that question, reflecting on why it might be a brilliant one. She doesn’t spell out her reservations, but I could tell they were there (she said something about how McCain should see to it that Palin has some A list advisors).
I’m sure Noonan and Murphy are hoping that Palin hits it out of the park tonight, but they’re also aware, and how could they not be, that Palin’s selection carries a lot of risk and smacks of identity politics. Until we know more about her, there isn’t much to do except hope McCain knows something about Palin that isn’t reflected on her resume.
And if hoping doesn’t work, there’s always that paper bag.

As for Peggy: may be there be a thousand open mikes for such as her. I really don’t care if it’s a media dirty trick, it only identifies her as among those who feel threatened by such as Sarah Palin.
After all, how dare anyone not consider the opinions of the insiders — the elite — the prescient — the people who don’t know a g-d thing about mainstream America, but who nevertheless demand to have their opinions considered by the GOP! How dare they not!
And so, she and her fellow elitists will do all they can, with petty sniping, doubts and insinuations, to now prove that hell yes, they were right!

That’s for you, kid. Not interested in what you have to say about it.
You misunderstand. I’m not necessarily doubting the credentials of either. I’m merely saying that you don’t see William Safire or Chuck Krauthammer or Cal Thomas ever getting a job there for the reason that they’re unequivocally conservative. Not to say that they would lower themselves to a job there, but MSNBC seems to want conservatives with chinks in their armor. As you said, they fired Tucker, which I do attribute to probably his resistance to their attempts to break him down. The rest, though, capitulate enough to keep themselves going.

This is outstanding. Finally, to hear someone on TV say such things, and Peggy Noonan of all folks! Awesome.
I hear lots of cheers for Palin. I also hear a lot of folks saying, “leave her alone.” I’d like to ask, in what areas are we allowed to question Gov. Palin?
What about her immigration policies, or lack thereof?
What about her lack of experience in terms of foreign policy and military affairs? Don’t give me the typical fallacious answer that “well, she has more than Obama.” My toddler is more qualified to attend kindergarten than a newborn, but that doesn’t mean he’s qualified. I care not about Obama. Convince me, on her own merits, that she’s qualified in this area.
What about her philosophies in terms of state vs. federal gov’t roles? Taxation? Purpose of gov’t? Social security?
I’m not limited to voting either Democrat or Republican here, so don’t tell me that “she’s better than Obama.” I want to hear why she’s qualified for Vice President. So far, I’m not convinced.

I call a spade a spade. I used to admire Buchanan a great deal. However, when he criticizes nearly every action the United States takes, including taking up the ever popular “9/11 was deserved” stance, it makes certain labels, like nazi sympathizer, seem more valid.
MadisonConservative on September 3, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Oh Peggy… oh well…
Meanwhile, Ann Coulter’s new column is up at anncoulter.com… a great one in support of Sarah Palin. I particularly loved this line:
When liberals start acting like they’re opposed to pre-marital sex and mothers having careers, you know McCain’s vice presidential choice has knocked them back on their heels.
But at least liberal reporters had finally found someone their own size to pick on: a 17-year-old girl.
And then she closes with this:
It’s as if a basketball player made the winning shot in the last three seconds of the game and liberals demand that we have a week-long discussion about whether the player should have taken that shot. WHAT IF HE MISSED?
With Palin, McCain didn’t miss.
D2Boston on September 3, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Bingo. A debate–a discussion–on the issues. On policy. On governing. That is what we want. We want her to present herself and not spend all her available air time answering stupid accusations. The Left is desperate to keep her off real issues and on defense against their sexist and personal attacks.
If YOU (Send_Me) want to know about her, GO FIND OUT. Don’t wait for us, or anyone for that matter, to do your homework. Read up on her. Read up on Biden. You might like one or the other. But for God’s sake (umm, can I say that in America? God’s sake?) don’t wait for the media to do it for you.

Sigh. You don’t get it…
I agree with everything Buchanan said about Hitler in your exerpt. Many people before us agreed too–and wrote about it.
Why can’t you see that someone can excel at something yet still be a complete monster. To note or acknowledge the things the monster does well (like, kill for example) is NOT To condone, endorse or appreciate it.
A well known and time proven maxim is to know your enemy. If you can’t honestly apprise what your enemy does well, then you are lost.
Buchanan simply noting what is TRUE about Hitler does not mean he ADMIRES Nazisim.
Let fall your banner Madison.
We’re way off topic here though–and I should reveal that I was in a similar position as Buchanan when I submitted a thesis idea to my Far Left Nutwing Professers in Grad School. They labeled me a slave-loving white capitalist. All I wanted to do was write a paper on the arguements for the South’s secession prior to the Civil War WITHOUT a focus on slavery (slavery focused works were, well, in abundance). I wanted to look at other aspects of secession and them apply them to today’s America (immigration changing the values, languages and allegiances, etc).
But, like you, the Department fixated on the EVIL or the South–and didn’t like that I might suggest that they made some good points OUTSIDE of slavery for secession.

Peggy Noonan has written too many wise things over the course of the last 20+ years to be dismissed out of hand. I think the key to understanding her view is the word narrative. She had a narrative in mind for this cycle years ago – she wrote a book against Hillary, if you’ll recall. Obama exploded that narrative and because of that, Noonan has a soft spot for Obama. So Obama’s narrative became the narrative to understand. Now that nasty Maverick has upset the applecart once again.
After Palin gives a good speech tonight, Peggy will apologize and turn around on what she said today. And when that happens, you can draw your own conclusions.
Mr. D on September 3, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Perhaps, something really good will come of this incident. Perhaps we won’t be subjected to that idiotic buzzword “narrative”. I don’t know where the media types found it, but I have grown so tired of its use (mostly abuse) that I can stand to see a few fall on the “narrative” petard, if that helps to end its use.

No issues here.
Well, there’s one problem: she hasn’t published her position yet on these issues. That is my point. I guess I don’t understand the fascination about her. I don’t care that she’s a woman, a Mom of 5, has a pregnant daughter, or anything besides her credentials for becoming president. She’s pro-life. Good stuff. She hunts/fishes. That’s fine, so do I, but what has she done to fight for 2nd Amendment rights as a statesman? According to the NRA, of which she’s a life-time member, she signed a legal brief to the SOTUS during the Heller case, and that’s it. Signing a legal brief, while important, isn’t all that much. She’s fought corruption. Sounds good to me. Now, if she has put information out there on the issues I listed, great, please, share the wealth of knowledge with all. I’ve shared links on here for others, and I’ve appreciated any links people have posted as well.
I’m not here to disrespect her or her followers and supporters. I’m just wondering that if a person calls themselves a “conservative”, then wouldn’t it be prudent to get answers to such questions before giving $7+ million in support? That’s all I’m trying to say.

I stopped reading and listening to Noonan when she turned on Bush. She is not a person of integrity at all, she just uses conservatives and her contacts in journalism to make money.

And when The Dali Bama is on The Factor, either watch “Z-Visa’s” speech or the Giants vs. Redskins league opener…Don’t watch The Dali Bama, especially now that he’s breaking his pledge to not go on FOX!

I totally agree with you Send_Me, I was being sarcastic.
Nice job kicking MadisonCommunist’s ass, Montana. I wouldnt spend too much time rebutting the fool though. He cant learn, he is a bigot…and pretty damn dumb.

Unless she can figger a way to ‘nuance’ her way out of this, it’s gonna hurt her bad.

The left is going to have a field day with this. Thanks Peggy. I am so dissapointed right now.
Zetterson on September 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM
Now I know how much it must have sucked for libtards when Geraldine Ferraro (D) and Joe Lieberman (D) came over to our side!
They can have Noonan. No loss.
jeff_from_mpls on September 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM
Fine. You’re a rabid Buchanan supporter who refuses to address what he said because you agree wholeheartedly with it, and do not address Hitler’s actions during the war, the America First movement, or any of his history of anti-semitic remarks pointed out by one of the fathers of conservatism, William Buckley.
I wish you’d have just said that at the beginning.
MadisonConservative on September 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM
This is going to kill Peggy Noonan. Unfortunately it will also hurt Sarah Palin. This is going to prove to be a horrible mistake.

You have to admit every time you read a future column you will wonder who she is pandering to at any given moment. Although she is a beautiful writer I have a little trouble watching her live because she is so affected but that’s a me thing. And she has been really hard on W so for me she has used up any credit she had for writing the Challenger speech for Pres. Reagan. Besides, she said he knew and wanted to include the line everybody remembers best.

Well, here is my fascination (yes, subject to change if I find out more I do not like):
1. Her record in Alaska as I understand it
2. Her open Pro-Life stance
3. She hunts (yes that is impressive to me and though I am sure many see hunting as a throwback or a “cowboy hat trick” it shows an appreciation of 1) guns, 2 ) gun discipline, 3) self sufficiency, 4) getting dirty (quartering an moose in the back country—ugh!)
4. Her decision to keep her special needs child
5. I can identify with her. I cannot identify with a Joe Biden (except the longwinded part)
Hope that helps.
I personally think it’s ok to be excited about things in life–about candidates, about a new job, about a child, about a new day.
I chose optimism and hope (not Barack Hope…)
Does she have a downside? I sure hope so. If she doesn’t, my fifth point above goes poof.

Apparently you didn’t look up Straw Man.
Can’t help you any further.

Shhh, didn’t you hear, she’s one of our own? You won’t be a “Great American” unless you show a little more giddiness on this.

ANOTHER SCANDAL FOR PALIN?!?!?!?!?!
Gov. Sarah Palin is already facing ethical questions over her firing of the Alaska public safety commissioner, and now she faces questions over the firing of a longtime local police chief.
New reports raise questions about the firing of a local police chief.
After taking over as Mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Palin fired the longtime local police chief. The former police chief, Irl Stambaugh says he was fired because he stepped on the toes of Palin’s campaign contributors, including bar owners and the National Rifle Association.
Stambaugh’s lawyer, William Jermain, says the chief tried to move up the closing hours of local bars from 5 a.m. to two a.m. after a spurt of drunk driving accidents and arrests.
“His crackdown on that practice by the bars was not appreciated by her and that was one reason she terminated Irl,” said Jermain.
PALIN IS TOAST!!!! Sad, very funny, but very sad and very bad for our country.

Pick up that Intrade stock, yet? Or are you too busy thinking up more names and avoiding the link I gave you?

Naw! This shouldn’t hurt Sarah Palin at all. Us Middle Americans enjoy the fact that she’s shaking them up BIG TIME! The MSM spokesholes hate the fact that somebody like her even exists!!!!

Sure thing Madison, sure thing. I have read all of Pat’s books and most of his articles and have seen him on numerous shows. I know how Pat feels about America and how he feels about Nazism. You, on the other hand, have ZERO credibility with me and I dont wish to debate with you any further.
Montana is correct, you use sleazy debate tactics like straw men, etc….liberals do that well.
Roger Waters on September 3, 2008 at 7:38 PM
lol
Not bad, Montana.
Send_Me on September 3, 2008 at 7:40 PM
I think Peggy will come out and refresh our memory when Reagan had his hot mike screw up that sent the libs into orbit (remember). She’ll try to equate that with her faux pas ( a nice elitist term). It won’t work for me- just sayin’. Peggy you are not Reagan.
Fuquay Steve on September 3, 2008 at 7:41 PM
Best news since I read the Palin speech excerpts.
MadisonConservative on September 3, 2008 at 7:41 PM
Roger, notice anything in that article you cut and copied? Only one view point. Two sides to every story.
Field test: Go find 10 people who got fired, get their opinion on their firing. Count how many state it was their own fault.
Every town, no matter the size, has it’s politics, it’s grudges.
Every person who’s been fired blames the boss. It’s human nature.
And well, if Sarah Palin actually fired someone, well, that is proof of executive experience right there! It is one of the hardest things to do–fire someone. For personal, social, economic, legal and moral purposes. Very hard.
How’s that research on Straw Man arguments goin’ pally?
Montana on September 3, 2008 at 7:41 PM
well, I hope you are right Montana…I have my suspicions.
