Awful: Peggy Noonan, Mike Murphy caught on open mike about Palin

posted at 5:16 pm on September 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

I wonder how this little interstitial made its way from MSNBC to TPM. Oh well. Fox nailed Jesse Jackson talking about Obama this way, so turnabout’s fair play.

Simply awful, not only for Palin as a vote of no confidence (“it’s over”) ahead of the big speech from someone respected on the right but for Noonan herself as evidence that she lies to her readers. Remember, the column this morning that I stupidly praised was all about how compelling Palin’s narrative is and how dangerous it might prove to the left. See for yourself what she really thinks of the narrative approach. She also says, “Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work.” You’ll see that nuance somewhat refined here too.

I’m sending you to Politico to watch it because it’s a little hard to decipher what’s being said and they have a transcript. Exit quotation from Noonan’s op-ed: “Palin’s friends should be less immediately worried about what the Obama campaign will do to her than what the McCain campaign will do.” Or what Republican pundits will do, I guess. Click the image to watch.

Update: Noonan updates at the Journal to say she was taken out of context.

I’m more interested in how this piece of audio got out.

Who cares? If you have a microphone around your neck or ANYWHERE in the vicinity, use half a brain.

Ever see that commercial where the fellow comes in to fix the mute button…AFTER the tirade?

Exactly.

Allah, you fool! :)

I called her on her suck-uppy, mixed messages here.

The alarms began to go off when she started writing bizarre columns about the Messiah for the W.S.J. awhile back, so I have been on high alert ever since.

AP is either a liberal or a NY rube, even the NY rube doesn’t fit since he bashes Rudy every chance he gets…

Can it you stupid troll: Allah is a Eeyore and a bit of a blue-state dhimmi, but he’s no liberal and has never pulled any two-faced shit.

someone on September 3, 2008 at 5:58 PM

I think the video from last week was far more shocking..she called out MSNBC and then went on to pick on politicians that bring up the 2 headed person with a bad leg and no insurance..I agreed with the premise but found it rather shocking that she would talk in the manner she did…

Anyway, unfortunatly, what they said is the truth. Palin was a horrid choice and will seal the deal for Obama. Blame McCain. What a dumb choice….what a ghastly republican nominee.

Roger Waters on September 3, 2008 at 5:45 PM

Please enlighten us, oh wise one, how this now totally invigorated conservative base, many who were last week planning on a) not voting, and b) an Obama Administration, is a bad thing for John McCain. Do you know of another who could have brought the base into camp, or are you just a pissy little troll?

Patrick S on September 3, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Now, suddenly, it’s cynical “bullsh*t.” Seems a bit inconsistent.

Allahpundit on September 3, 2008 at 5:28 PM

I don’t know if it’s that inconsistent. In the article, she is saying what she thought the Palin pick could do in a positive fashion especially with respect to the attacks from the left she’ll get. In the open mic, she’s saying that, overall, it’s a negative to pick a young, right-wing woman with limited experience, sort of an Obama mirror image, but one without the worldwide fame and reputation for charisma. She might think that swing voters will look at it and instinctively trust McCain less. The left can’t say, “You know, McCain was great until August, but now we think you should vote for Obama.” That doesn’t tie in with the “McCain = Bush” narrative. But voters can think that, and if they lose faith in McCain, it’s game over.

Incidentally, Noonan was not among those who blurted, “cynical,” but the above would be true whether or not she were. Noonan wrote, “She is either going to be magic or one of history’s accidents.” Clearly, surrounded by the drawn knives at MSNBC, Noonan was leaning toward the latter. I, for one, think and hope she’s wrong. And I also hope she explains herself; after all, Palin has to.

About That Off-Mic Exchange [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

I’m surprised by how many people are content with believing an off-mic conversation rudely and unprofessionally put on YouTube is the full unvarnished final word from a commentator. The honest truth is that no one in St. Paul knows how this is all going to turn out and Peggy Noonan’s comments on and off the record reflect that.

Look at another one of the republicans defending this retched comment by Noonan. NRO’S Kathryn Jean Lopez. Good Lord how many more trolls are out there dismissing our Barracuda?!

Peggy, I have a feeling that when we look back in a few months, this will damage you a lot more than it will hurt Sarah Palin. And that will be true no matter who is elected in November.

If given the opportunity to address Ms. Noonan, who heretofore I trusted, It would be these two words: You C*nt.

Doc Rochester on September 3, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Noonan had written about the media needing to remember they are in a bubble with each other, then she gets caught on tape yammering in the bubble.

She probably wrote about how the 2007 New York Giants had a chance to win the Super Bowl, then bet a fat wad of dough on the Patriots.

Graybark on September 3, 2008 at 6:03 PM

I’m so sick to death of the media dictating to us how and what we are suppose to believe. This whole ordeal just makes me sick. The sad thing is that most people get their opinions from this kind of crap, they listen to the headlines but don’t read the story. I was at a BBQ this weekend and was dumfounded at how many people were just spouting off; did you hear about her daughter; did you hear she got someone fired etc… So many people will not bother to research and will vote this election like it’s American Idol.

spypeach on September 3, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Wow. I can’t help but think that that might have been a set-up by MSNBC. Noonan’s article today was very good and was somewhat encouraging to us Palin fans. What better way to completely undercut Noonan’s message and credibility than set up a hot mic “gotcha” like this? Even if it was just a fortuitous accident on MSNBC’s part to capture this conversation, someone over there certainly didn’t hesitate to disseminate it.

I still agree with Noonan’s article, not her comments in this video. I’m not surprised by her actual cynicism; I’m just disappointed that she ended up contributing to the relentless pounding our enthusiasm for Palin is taking. I don’t think Noonan really wanted to be one of the reasons why Palin fails if indeed Palin ends up failing.

I think Sarah will surprise Noonan and everyone else. Go Sarah!

I’ve said it before, but it always rings true: Noonan hopped a very strange train a long time ago and I have no idea where she’s headed.

But this from Schlussel…

Noonan’s incessant gushing over people for whom she wants to become the next speechwriter is beyond gauche.

… is one of the funniest things I’ve seen all week.

Keep your eyes on the prize, folks. McCain-Palin in 2008.

Peggy Noonan is the Blanche DuBois of punditry. Her airy, breathy prognosticating is an exercise in self promotion all dressed up in more makeup than the pig.

McCain-Palin. 2008. That’s the prize.

Oh and Peggy? Apparently McCain and Palin already have speech writers and you’re not one of them. Bee-yotch.

pabarge on September 3, 2008 at 6:07 PM

As far as Noonan being on the MSNBC payroll, and now being screwed by them in this manner, as the great Jewish physicist Wolfgang Pauli said his long-time friend Werner Heisenberg staying in Germany to work for the Nazis on an atomic bomb:
“He agreed to sup with the devil, but found out that his spoon wasn’t long enough.”

TexasJew on September 3, 2008 at 6:08 PM

Is it true ? Did Joe Biden tell Sarah, “My daddy can whip your daddy”. (Just kidding) Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the epitome of maturity but, this all sounds like playground politics to me. The whole world is watching this. It’s embarrassing.

KyserS on September 3, 2008 at 6:08 PM

this shows Noonan’s articles are b.s. and dont reflect even HER opinions. Funny but very sad.

This is going to hurt…but not as bad as the affair allegation if that allegation has legs. Since that allegations comes on the heels of the Edwards allegation which turned out to be exaclty right…the timing couldnt be worse for Palin….or should I say republicans…or should I say the U.S. for the next four years.

http://www.philosophynow.org/issue60/60snaevarr.htm

MacIntyre maintains that personal videntities must have a narrative structure. Our actions are episodes in stories, not least in our own personal stories. As the above example illustrates, any action cannot be given an identity unless it is placed within an agent’s biography. Further, MacIntyre says that even if we can theoretically doubt the unity of our personality – doubt that we are the same persons today as we were ten years (or ten seconds!) ago – other people do not doubt this unity. We can for instance be held responsible for actions we did a decade ago. This can only happen because others regard us as having a narrative totality. MacIntyre uses an example inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel The Count of Monte Christo. Its protagonist is in a certain context described as “the prisoner of Chateau d’If” and in another context “the Count of Monte Christo.” To understand that we are talking about the same person only means that we can recount a story about how this person can under different circumstances be characterised in two completely different ways. In this fashion, a person’s identity is precisely the same type of identity presupposed of a character in a novel or a play. This unity is in turn a function of the unity of the narrative. Thus persons are abstractions from narratives. At the same time, MacIntyre emphasises that the concept of personal identity is not only logically dependent upon the concept of a narrative, but it’s also the other way round. Inother words it is meaningless to talk about a character biography unless one presupposes that its subject has a personal identity. The biography must be about a continually-existing thing. Conversely, it is pointless, meaningless, to state that some being has a personal identity through time, and at the same time deny that this being has a possible biography.

irishspy on September 3, 2008 at 6:25 PM

What’s the big deal? I think the people speaking, even though “Republican”, aren’t of concern or consequence. What is that…. two DC votes? I don’t think Sarah Palin is solely an anti-Democrat candidate. I think she is an anti-bullshit candidate.

Anyway you cut it, she is clearly better than either Obama or Biden. If McCain drops her, he makes every kind word said about him last night a lie…. won’t happen. To be a functional (and good?) President requires selecting a good group of advisors and cabinet along with an ideologically compatible #2. To be a great President requires the same except we can add in strong character with core principles that you adhere to.

About 100 years ago, I was in the 82d at Ft. Bragg. The first woman to go through jump school had just completed the course and there was a picture of her in the Army Times being picked up on the drop zone by a jeep (along with her ‘chute). I remarked to another guy about what bullshit it was… she should have to roll up her chute and double-time off the drop zone like everyone else. He agreed and the discussion quickly changed to equal pay for equal work. I told him I believed in equal pay for TRULY equal work. He did not. We debated. Every time I asked him why and blunted his point for the BS it was, he was getting agrier and angrier until he stood and yelled as his answer “Because! Because I got a dick!” and then stormed off. That guy must be showing up on this forum….

Look at another one of the republicans defending this retched comment by Noonan. NRO’S Kathryn Jean Lopez. Good Lord how many more trolls are out there dismissing our Barracuda?!

jencab on September 3, 2008 at 6:00 PM

She does have a good point about not believing what you see on You Tube. It is a good solid lesson to remember.

But I have very little doubt Peggy said these things.

Elizabetty on September 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

What’s the big deal?

The deal isn’t with the effect this comment will have on the election (none).

It’s on what Peggy Noonan has, Lonesome Rhodes-style, revealed about her true self.

someone on September 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Give David Frum credit for being honest about his snobbery.

CanadianGuy on September 3, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Mark Levin is talking about Noonan now. And he says, it’s all about them (Noonan and others) about being loved. They don’t like us…. full stop.

I’m used to this drill living where I do. Y’all might as well get used to it, too.

Cody1991 on September 3, 2008 at 6:28 PM

“Actually, Roger, I asked you a fairly simple question. You come across as Johnny Gloom n’ Doom over Sarah Palin and I’d like to know who you believe would have brought the disaffected conservatives freighting back into the fold like thay have. Maybe you’re not a troll but you responded pretty pissy. Have a bran muffin.”

These media hyped disaffected conservatives were going to vote for McCain because the idea of an Obama presidency made them sick. Dont worry about them. McCain threw a “hail mary” when he recklessly picked Palin and he had some excellent safe conservative choices that would have helped with the media hyped disaffected conservatives and had the advantage of actually having experience and knowledge, unlike Palin. Palin was picked over experienced and better choices because she is a female. Or havent you figured that one out yet?

Roger Waters on September 3, 2008 at 6:28 PM

OH dear. If the Enquirer story on Palin having an affair with her husband’s former business partner is true….turn out the lights and concede. Reputation aside, the Enquirer gets it right more than they get it wrong.

UnFRICKINbelievable.

Roger Waters on September 3, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Not even close — they even admitted it was a rumor provided to them by an enemy.

Topsecretk9 on September 3, 2008 at 6:28 PM

Noonan’s also the yutz who got a case of the vapors when George Bush dared to mention God in his second inaurgural address. I imagine she has equally kind things to say about anyone from outside the Beltway.

To heck with her.

irishspy on September 3, 2008 at 6:25 PM

If the Enquirer truly has this scoop they should release it TODAY before she gets the VP nomination–within hours!!!

They gave Obama a break by releasing the Edward’s story before EGObama might have chosen him. Fair is fair, even though I think getting this news (if true) today or even this week would cause MANY HEADS TO EXPLODE! Some karma for Johnny at the expense of those of us who tried to vote in the primaries for a qualified and morally decent candidate?!

Noonan’s statement doesn’t reflect at all negatively on Sarah Palin, so you’re preaching to the choir.

The outrage is directed at Noonan, who is a freaking hypocrite and a liar.

fossten on September 3, 2008 at 6:30 PM

The beltway pundits and self-appointed brahmans on both sides have had the knives out for Palin right from the start. She doesn’t fit the upper crusty, Ivy League narrative that they have decided is the one and only acceptable narrative for a major candidate and that’s the main reason they are slobbering all over Obama The Messiah. Obama’s one of them, not one of us.

Django on September 3, 2008 at 6:30 PM

It’s on what Peggy Noonan has, Lonesome Rhodes-style, revealed about her true self.

I agree, especially since she prides herself on having the most on the pulse assessment of all state of affairs and what conservatives and americans want ABOVE ALL OTHERS.

Topsecretk9 on September 3, 2008 at 6:30 PM

I don’t think that Noonan’s comment was exactly a diss on Palin. I don’t think she intended to say that Palin wasn’t qualified, just that she wasn’t necessarily the most qualified woman McCain could’ve picked.

I’ve said it myself: there were plenty of other safer Republican women to choose from. McCain chose this woman for a reason, and while I don’t think narrative was the whole, or even the most important consideration, I don’t think it was ignored either.

Eukardios on September 3, 2008 at 6:31 PM

I do. We all make mistakes; we all can learn from them. If you had read her previous WSJ essay, you would have seen that Noonan has travelled a long way down Andrew Sullivan Lane.

It’s a shame. They both had their uber-cognitive moments in the sun, but all too briefly. Now it’s time to write them off as cocktail party-addled ninnies.

HelenW on September 3, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Good observations. Noonan always came across to me as the type of phony conservative (like George Will) who would never cross a certain line because she preferred to get invited to the best Georgetown cocktail parties. Randy Andy Sullivan likes to promote himself as a conservative but in the last two elections supported John Kerry and now B. Hussein Obama. His Bush Derangement Syndrome is because Bush does not support Randy Andy’s marrying his boyfriend and Sully has an obsession with torture probably because he engages in a lot (and I know I am speculating) of S & M stuff with said boyfriend. I read something out of Randy Andy’s rants that could have come straight out of the paleocon Buchanan playbook – he actually said “Our Likudnik foreign policy” – that’s when I gave up on him (as I did David Gergen and Peggy Noonan a long time ago).

You really need to think over that statement again.

fossten on September 3, 2008 at 6:31 PM

Well, I guess folks can decide for themselves whether Palin is bullshit, but after this, it’s beyond reasonable doubt that the certain bullshitter is Peggy Noonan.
Before this article I was suspecting Noonan had fallen in the tank for Obama. This article, I said, almost redeemed her. Silly me.

My,what a disappointment Noonan has become.

He spoke with admiration of Hitler, vocally defended nazi war criminals, and maintains an isolationist view of World War 2, continuing to blame the US for nearly every military venture we’ve taken part in. So when you’ve finished your tantrum, and can make a substantive post not comprised entirely of childish name-calling, you can consider responding. Until then, go step on a land mine.

Exit question: from what party are the “Gulf Rim” governors and what are they all doing right now?

baldilocks on September 3, 2008 at 5:43 PM

No kidding, and of all people, Peggy Noonan should know that, having been a speechwriter for Ronald Reagan. Numerous times the elitists said something couldn’t be done … just before Reagan went out and did it.

Apparently, Peg didn’t learn much from that experience.
