Awful: Peggy Noonan, Mike Murphy caught on open mike about Palin

I wonder how this little interstitial made its way from MSNBC to TPM. Oh well. Fox nailed Jesse Jackson talking about Obama this way, so turnabout’s fair play.
Simply awful, not only for Palin as a vote of no confidence (“it’s over”) ahead of the big speech from someone respected on the right but for Noonan herself as evidence that she lies to her readers. Remember, the column this morning that I stupidly praised was all about how compelling Palin’s narrative is and how dangerous it might prove to the left. See for yourself what she really thinks of the narrative approach. She also says, “Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work.” You’ll see that nuance somewhat refined here too.
I’m sending you to Politico to watch it because it’s a little hard to decipher what’s being said and they have a transcript. Exit quotation from Noonan’s op-ed: “Palin’s friends should be less immediately worried about what the Obama campaign will do to her than what the McCain campaign will do.” Or what Republican pundits will do, I guess. Click the image to watch.
Update: Noonan updates at the Journal to say she was taken out of context.

It didn’t sound to me like Noonan was knocking Palin. She simply said that Palin wasn’t the most “qualified” woman they could have picked. She never even said it was a bad pick, only that the republicans suck at the identity-politics, narrative-based crap (which they do).
DaveS on September 3, 2008 at 5:37 PM
I don’t really find it as shocking as everyone else. Peggy Noonan has been a good conservative, she recently ripped MSNBC for suck-upping to Obama. I think she was just being skeptical. She did call McCain’s pick a “hail mary” in her article. I don’t agree with her, but I don’t think it was that shocking.
poljunkie on September 3, 2008 at 5:37 PM
STFU. AP is on our side, dumbass.

Bull. AP would talk rings around Noonan, most of which would be worth hearing.
Dusty on September 3, 2008 at 5:37 PM
Have to agree with what Jonah Goldberg wrote on the Corner – I listen to Charles Krauthammer – but he was wrong on this one.
I guess that is one difference between us and the Others – we do not blindly or unquestioningly follow anybody!
I think that is part of what makes Americans just that -Americans.
I mean God Almighty even challenges us to come and test Him, so I believe the phrase “With God we trush – everybody else – verify!”
kybowexar on September 3, 2008 at 5:37 PM
I am sure the editors of the Wall St. Journal (where she writes her column) are doing a head shaking “What the hell?”
And wondering what credibility she now has as a conservative-type writer for their publication.
Next column Noonan will tell all and admit she is a closet liberal and voting for Obama and loves the way Michelle dresses.
Noonan is not on the Republican side.
albill on September 3, 2008 at 5:38 PM
Agreed. Ironside better get his sh!t together real soon if he expects to have any credibility left as a conservative pundit.

Like just about everything else, Debbie Schlussel was light years ahead of the curve. She has constantly pointed out what an absolute phony and fake “conservative” Peggy Noonan was. From Mar 24 of this year:

AP, your earlier praise of Noonan’s column wasn’t stupid. Who could have imagined she would be this duplicitous?
Her credibility is gone. She wrote to mid-conservatives. Who’s her audience going to be now? If anyone does read her they’ll be wondering whether she’d actually stand by her words.

Two peas in a Liberal Pod.
Chakra Hammer on September 3, 2008 at 5:39 PM
Allahpundit–someone said when was this? Was this this morning after she wrote the article? Or was this a few days ago?
My first reaction was not all happy faced either. If this is close to day one and then she wrote what she wrote later… well her article does say she as well as others are mostly out of touch with middle America.
So the date of this is important. If it is today. I stand by my earlier post.

We need to purge ourselves of these NYC/Beltway elitist bullshit artists. They are just as clueless and condescending as their Lefty counterparts. Up until recently Peggy was in love Obama. Perhaps she can now go back to where her heart is.
TheBigOldDog on September 3, 2008 at 5:40 PM
Shall we split the difference and agree that he’s “liberally pessimistic”?!
Citizen Duck on September 3, 2008 at 5:40 PM
Where do they live? The answer is, they aren’t CONSERVATIVE anymore. That’s the problem.
What are they good at when not conservative? Letting Democrats win elections.
kirkill on September 3, 2008 at 5:40 PM
Noonan probably thought it was over before the Palin pick. And that McCain picking her was cynical, not that Palin is. Or am I being too pessimistic?
Karl on September 3, 2008 at 5:40 PM
She’s a great writer! You people are going to toss her overboard for something that she said off-camera to an audience of three?
How many people in public life say things behind closed doors that they would never say in public? Rough guess: all of them. She’s not an elected official, so cut her some slack.
I’m more interested in how this piece of audio got out.
YYZ on September 3, 2008 at 5:40 PM
This is yet another reason why I find the Palin pick, and the subsequent reaction of those of the “Old Boys” network, to be so refreshing. It’s shaking things up, messing with business as usual and something that, to me as a conservative who has been severely disappointed with the Republican party, brings a new wind in all this. So despite the fact Palin is young the ideology she carries with her is as proven as Reagan. And as long as she holds strong to that this country’s mindset towards smaller government and stronger self-responsibility can continue to live another day.
That is what is most important to me in my support for her.
CTDeLude on September 3, 2008 at 5:40 PM
I used to love Peggy Noonan. I read her columns consistantly. Now, not so much. I quit reading her about two years ago. I read her column today because it was linked all over the blogosphere. For a moment I thought maybe she was finally worth reading again.
That moment has passed.

Yup, that piece was a good read and I, for one, was really feeling good. Now all of a sudden why does it feel like Sarah Palin, and the rest of us low class conservative types have this big proverbial knife in our backs? Hmmmmm?

Noonan and Krauthammer are both very intelligent and knowledgeable. Sometimes the truth hurts, folks. Palin was a WAY OUT THERE PICK FOR VP!

How obnoxious. I’ve been done with Noonan for a good while now.
CP on September 3, 2008 at 5:42 PM
I’m unclear as to what Noonan meant when she said “It’s not going to work.”
The selection? Or the sale/narrative that they’ll use for Palin to introduce her to the public?
Yes, better spinning through ignorance.
SteveMG on September 3, 2008 at 5:42 PM
The biggest thing we can hold to a writer in their honest commentary to the nation at large is that they are indeed honest. This shows she’s anything but as she was positive in a column about Palin then privately saying “it’s over.” That’s inconsistency and entirely removes any reason to read, and believe, whatever she says from here on out.
CTDeLude on September 3, 2008 at 5:42 PM
Damage control, pronto, Ms. Noonan. You seem to like to talk.

So, now we know that Peggy Noonan is more of an elitist than a conservative. That’s good to know.
Loxodonta on September 3, 2008 at 5:43 PM
The cynicism is not McCain’s – it is theirs. Ostensibly working for a cause, a company, a party, and then privately trashing it??? That’s dishonest and low-life.
These three had better start looking for new jobs; and we’re all going to prove them wrong on November 4th. Go McCain/Palin!!!

Good job Noonan, you old hag. Palin took your limelight and you get all bitter about it?
How does a candidate lose before she ever gets started?
This is why Republicans lost in 2006. Complacency and pessimism.
Either shut up and move forward, or get off the train Noonan. Pessimism is not inspirational, nor is it what people are attracted to.
TheHat on September 3, 2008 at 5:43 PM
I haven’t liked Noonan since she went all ga-ga for Obama.
That last remark about BHO had so much “class” to not let his campaign staff speak ill about Palin’s daughter was instructive. What a dimwit!
Obama’s staff and operatives and MSM sycophants have been pushing that story as hard as they could. He just wanted his fingerprints off of it.
Where the hell do Noonan think all those well-financed websites and whisper campaigns came from?
Goodbye, and good riddance..
TexasJew on September 3, 2008 at 5:43 PM
Noonan’s long had a way with words… but ideas? Not so much.
Here’s what cooks her in my stew pot, though … as a conservative member of the MSM until recently. Why the Zeus is she sitting on that parody of a news network, that fraudulent and flatulent tool thats either shamelessly shoveling money from the Soros crowd into its pockets or so devoid of a raison d’etre that it latches on to the lunatic fringe of the left?
I appeared on CNN a few times and invariably left wishing I could have taken a bath. You don’t contribute to a bunch of unabashed hacks like the MSNBC crewe UNLESS you lean that way to begin with. I don’t care how much they pay you.
She’s a soul-less hack unless she somehow miraculously explains here double-edged hypocrisy.

1. AP, you do need to either stop with the liberal equivalencies.
2. Noonan will be enjoying her new job saying, “Do you want fries with that?”
3. Remember what our resident defeatist AP linked to about Palin: A “hockey mom” differs from a grizzley in that she wears lipstick. Obviously Palin has to be a bit reserved, but may we hope and pray for a nice zinger against “detractors”. In other words, may she tell Noonan to F-off. (Dang, I wish censorship wasn’t in place here.)
Tommygun on September 3, 2008 at 5:44 PM
This declassifies Palin as a worthless liar and commentator. She is a hack for Obama.
MSNBC also purposely left the audio on air.
Regardless these two trolls are the ultimate jerks in our republican party.
Murphy is a liberal republican failure as well as Noonan. I am restraining myself from using all kinds of cursing that Noonan has not used in that video.

Seixon on September 3, 2008 at 5:44 PM
There was some lefty movie a few years ago with Jeff Bridges that depicted a female vice-presidential candidate. In the quite lame movie some Republican (played by Gary Oldman) supposedly had a home-made porno movie of the prospective candidate. Eventually she weather’s the storm, they get elected anyway without her responding to the tape. In this case the woman was obviously a Democrat and the baddies were Republican but they preached about privacy and how women always have to take a few on the chin in public life.
Now we have the exact opposite reaction by the left. Is this life imitating art?

Anyway, unfortunatly, what they said is the truth. Palin was a horrid choice and will seal the deal for Obama. Blame McCain. What a dumb choice….what a ghastly republican nominee.
Roger Waters on September 3, 2008 at 5:45 PM
Am I supposed to care what Peggy Noonan says? Do you really think many of the undecided voters out there even know who she is or care about what she says? This is more fodder for the liberals to make them feel better about themselves, but it doesn’t mean jack shit as far as the election goes.

Hey, go fsck yourself. AP is lots of things, not the least of which being one of the best analysts I’ve ever read, on par with anyone in the NY/DC axis and better than nearly all of them, but he’s not a lefty. He’s a powerful asset to conservatives, whether he’s agreeing or disagree with them, because he’s honest, thorough and viscerally direct in his commentary. He’s a newspaperman in a world of preening journalists.
We’ve all got our problems with what AP says, for one reason or another, but I think it’s fair to say that we all, those of us who give a shite about the reality on the ground anyway, appreciate the fact that he has no bones with saying what he thinks.

TWWWWEEEEET! Five yard penalty for introducing facts not in evidence.
Speaking for me and my position on the right but it’s been a couple years since I had any respect for Noonan. Her post 9/11/01 column brought tears to my eyes but she has become increasingly shrill and liberal over the years. I guess she’s sold out to the Bill Kristol/ McCain/ Allahpundit crowd of elitist liberal “Republicans” who hate people like me because I say what I mean and stick to more core values of traditional conservativism instead of reveling in the political strategy, compromise, and getting along with liberals nature that is the cancer on the GOP.
Noonan has not been a conservative voice for some time and only fellow travelers down McCain’s brand of conservatism are blind to that fact. The right doesn’t respect her much anymore despite her wonderful gift with writing powerful columns and her connection to Reagan. McCain abandoned any association with Reagan Republicans the minute he slithered to the top of the heap and got the nomination. One example- Liberman praised McCain for abridging Constitutional rights in the name of CFR and for plotting with Kennedy to force a second round of amnesty on the nation (which Reagan aadmitted didn’t turn out as he would have hoped). McCain is no conservative and Noonan is no longer the voice of the movement she once was.

Funny that you are calling other people liberals. Liberals sit around and complain and complain while never adding anything to society.
That is exactly what you are doing here.
Elizabetty on September 3, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Okay, I’ve about had it. You whiny pieces of shit who sit on your keyboards and blame the main people who run this fine blog are more worthless than trolls like alphie. Trolls like him provide entertainment because they are like punching bags. You can hit them over and over easily, and they come back for more. You, on the other hand, are providing nothing but bitching.
Some of you that have been crying your eyes out over AP’s and Ed’s analyses have been here a while, but it appears that most of you are newly registered. This happens when they open registration: sewage floats in with the floodwaters. That’s fine. Some of you have been and will not be back, and you won’t be missed. For those of you who have been reading this same man’s writing for years, as we have, seem to think that recently a brain transplant has occurred. It hasn’t.
AP is hard on the candidates that we go bananas for, like Fred and Sarah. It’s good sense to do so. That sentiment, and that sentiment alone, is what is driving the Obama campaign. We have to take a hard look at Sarah Palin and John McCain to make sure that we learn everything we can before the left dishes it out to us. He’s been hard on McCain for quite a while now, and rightly so. Now he’s being hard on Palin, and I think a great deal of scorn is coming by virtue of the fact that she’s giving you the pleasure of voting for a conservative republican ticket this November. That was something few of us expected, and I’m grateful for it. For some of you, frankly, I think it’s because she’s a cute chick, and you don’t want Biff Tannen hassling her. For the latter, grow the hell up, you’re embarrassing us. For the former, you have to realize that just because the ticket is now conservative does not mean it’s won. Lots of things can happen, and the way the information flows can be critical to how they play out. Imagine if the ugly rumors about Trig had not gotten out. It would not have been so easy to play down her daughter’s pregnancy. The flow of information with the right timing made that happen.
The bottom line is this: Ed and Allah are pundits. They give their observations about the state of political situations, based on their beliefs and views. However, Ed and Allah are exceptional pundits. They try to be as objective as possible, and never shy from allowing all commenters to have their viewpoints, which places them a cut above places like Freep and RedState. If you don’t like what they have to say, leave. Calling them liberals or downers or “pussies” is the equivalent of whiny Kos kids, and it needs to stop. You’re fouling the site with your complaining and bitching, especially when it’s about the fact that they are linking to news. If you’re so afraid of what is actually happening, go to sites where they hide events they don’t like. The rest of us will face the truth about the good and the bad, and deal with it.
In a nutshell, if you’re going to do nothing but moan like a girl with a skinned knee, go make your own f***ing blog and do it.

Michael Murphy is the Republican Susan Estrich he is more known for the campaigns he lost then he has ever won now he is a TV toad making a buck trying to pass himself off as knowledgeable.
Peggy Noonan is (was) attractive who has always been known as a self promoting opportunist. She took credit for speeches that she was not even the lead on them. She took credit for many things that were not hers but she always had this disarming charm where she could get by with it.
When she left Reagan’s White House there were no tears.

Money and face time, plus she’s been part of the system for so long it’s all a game for them.
I will note however, that Noonan is right that Palin is not the most qualified from an experience standpoint, but she makes that up with capability, performance, and principles that haven’t been hacked to pieces by years in the system. That, to me is worth so much more than having someone who has more experience but has sold their souls to the system.
Oh yeah, Sarah has the ability to inspire to a winning ticket degree, something all the others didn’t. That’s just as important as experience. Noonan’s job was to give 90% of that to others through speeches.
