Awful: Peggy Noonan, Mike Murphy caught on open mike about Palin

I wonder how this little interstitial made its way from MSNBC to TPM. Oh well. Fox nailed Jesse Jackson talking about Obama this way, so turnabout’s fair play.
Simply awful, not only for Palin as a vote of no confidence (“it’s over”) ahead of the big speech from someone respected on the right but for Noonan herself as evidence that she lies to her readers. Remember, the column this morning that I stupidly praised was all about how compelling Palin’s narrative is and how dangerous it might prove to the left. See for yourself what she really thinks of the narrative approach. She also says, “Gut: The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work.” You’ll see that nuance somewhat refined here too.
I’m sending you to Politico to watch it because it’s a little hard to decipher what’s being said and they have a transcript. Exit quotation from Noonan’s op-ed: “Palin’s friends should be less immediately worried about what the Obama campaign will do to her than what the McCain campaign will do.” Or what Republican pundits will do, I guess. Click the image to watch.
Update: Noonan updates at the Journal to say she was taken out of context.

You mean Peggy Noonan lies? Really? I’m shocked.

Peggy Noonan is a part of the Washington Establishment who wants things their way.
Palin will force her to shut the hell up and sit the hell down.

Wow … I’m not sure what it does to the campaign, but “it’s over” definitely applies to Noonan’s credibility when this is contrasted with what she wrote this morning.

CliffHanger on September 3, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Geez.
You think they might take Giuliani’s advice and give her a chance. They don’t know Palin, for pete’s sake.
Why is it everyone thinks they this woman better than the people who elected her?
And…….I think Murphy and Noonan will find that the carpet got worn out and is not there for them any longer this cycle.
Save for PMSNBC.

In Peggy Noonan’s mind she is more qualified than Governor Palin.
That is the Narcissism of the Beltway crowd. DC was initially only occupied by the politicos for about a season and a ahalf. Boy aren’t we the better off.
Palin made the “mistake” of not making it to the DC cocktail circuit and galdhanding the newsies.
The talking heads were in the tank for Kerry, they were in the tank for Gore, they are in the tank for Obama.
Let’s flush the tank after we make them look foolish again.
sven10077 on September 3, 2008 at 5:23 PM
*sigh*
That actually hurts, Peggy. Say goodbye to your place in the conservative pantheon. Or, perhaps more accurately, welcome to your retirement.
spmat on September 3, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Cross-posting:
1. What Noonan says is not inconsistent with what she wrote. She can think that Palin was not the best pick and that the MSM has been hideous to her family. Plus, it’s not like you’re going to pick a fight with lefty Chuck Todd and disgruntled Mike Murphy while you’re stuck on-set.
2. That being said, I like open mikes. In particular, Noonan — for all of her decription of the Bubble today — has shown herself just as capable of being in it as her colleagues. To quote a classier lady, “Boo. Frickin’. Hoo.”
Plus:
3. Noonan started by calling the Palin pick a “Hail Mary pass,” which is again not inconsistent with her live mic comment. And her views of Palin can be separated to a large degree to her opinion of the reason Camp McCain picked her.

Noonan wasn’t invited to be a speech writer for Bush I or Bush II, nor McCain. She was a protege of Buchanan in the Reagan Administration. As a DC insider, frankly, she is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Will this hurt Palin? No. Will it hurt Noonan? Noonan who?

No Doubt! Ronald Reagan didn’t win Washington D.C!
We want to take Washington D.C. by the throat and KILL IT!
Chakra Hammer on September 3, 2008 at 5:24 PM
The only people that read Peggy Noonan already know who they are voting for and why.
Noonan is simply an Eeore anyways.
Wait until after tonight’s speech to see if Noonan suddenly finds her “doubts” turned around.
For me, I have always like Palin. A governor with 80% approval rating and people are acting like she is not qualified.
They only say that because they never heard of her and don’t want to feel stupid.
dKap on September 3, 2008 at 5:25 PM
“Blue Swing State Governor World”, do these people make up stupid phrases? Do they think it makes them sound intellegent? No wonder that have to cover the news, instead of making it. In answer to Peggy Noonan’s question, “Is she most qualified?”. My answer and a whole lot of other peoples is “Yes”. By the way Peggy, I can get through a whole paragraph with out swearing.

That’s what hurts the most…
ninjapirate on September 3, 2008 at 5:28 PM
It surely is, to the extent that she’s claiming the pass has fallen dead and the game is over. Also, like I say, she seemed very high on the power of Palin’s narrative to disarm the left in her op-ed. Now, suddenly, it’s cynical “bullsh*t.” Seems a bit inconsistent.
Allahpundit on September 3, 2008 at 5:28 PM
Nice going Nooner; now you have nobody that respects you.

Red/Blue an elitist is an elitist. No matter what normal Americans do they will look down their noses at us. WTF is it with journalists and lawyers that become politicians that makes them so damn condescending to everyone else?
DerKrieger on September 3, 2008 at 5:29 PM
When was this video shot? Is this the initial reaction and this morning’s column the reasoned, considered version?
cthulhu on September 3, 2008 at 5:29 PM
Elitist is getting thrown around a lot this year, but you know, if a word fits…then it does.
What is wrong with these people? I agree with Bernard Goldberg, these people should be forced to live in a semi-small city in the actual heartland of the US for a period of time. So they might get a feel for the actual country they live in.
Peggy Noonan – along with some other Republican Elit…no, how about snob? Yeah, snob it is! These folks need a lesson in how folks think “in country.”
We like Sarah because she’s an actual person. Not a empty suit (or pantsuit or even dress). She sounds like she not only knows what she is talking about, but means it!
I’d rather have someone who’s judgement I trust to make some hard, major decisions than someone I do not – but has all this experience!

If she thought that the Palin pick was bad, then why didn’t she say it in her column… Bueller? Bueller??
BTW, why the hell is Murphy so bitter?

This won’t go far.
It’s not as sexy as Jesse Jackson cutting a guys nuts off, (and doing the action to illustrate his point.)

I have been saying that Peggy is in it for Obama. She is sucked into Olbermann world on MSNBC. Her articles are crap to me. She is very much the snob that I detest.
jencab on September 3, 2008 at 5:30 PM
Now, does this mean Noonan doesn’t get one of those cool ass Christmas cards the White House sends out every year?
tree hugging sister on September 3, 2008 at 5:30 PM
When I first signed on to Hot Air and MM…. I once opined that I thought Noonan to be smarmy and elitist…… I was dressed down for it… Well, I stand my ground… she’s smarmy, elitist and a liar.
MNDavenotPC on September 3, 2008 at 5:30 PM
BTW I don’t care what “KAY” feels. Everyone else has rallied; and I think “KAY” was a bad pick. That would have been just a “narrative” pick.
Spirit of 1776 on September 3, 2008 at 5:30 PM
Noonan has been soft on Obama for a long time now…I really don’t know what happened to her – I used to admire her so much, and she seemed the farthest thing from a hack. She started getting weird around the time she bashed Bush’s SOTU speech a couple of years ago. She was just vicious about it, it seemed like she was jealous that he hadn’t usewd her as a speechwriter…….
Priscilla on September 3, 2008 at 5:30 PM
Noonan has finished her career but those comments will undoubtedly damage Palin as well.

Is Noonan a liberal? Maybe she’s been secretly posting to Daily Kos all these years.
indythinker on September 3, 2008 at 5:31 PM
OH my heck!
Peggy! This is so two faced. I expect better of you! And not really all that accurate of analysis! Narrative? What did Reagan have? Narrative! Much of the Reagan Revolution was Narrative! And Peggy Noonan wrote the narrative! Policy yes, but…. Palin has the right policy. And Kay H. is pro-choice. That outweighs experience. And she is part and parcel of Washington insider!
Peggy I think you are guilty of the bubble you were speaking about. You know the one you all in Washington try to get out of but never really do?
I think you can save yourself some of your long worked on reputation but you’d better hurry and appologize!
Peggy Noonan=Bubblehead
petunia on September 3, 2008 at 5:31 PM
This all strikes me as an overreaction. It would be one thing if she called her some moth breathing hick or gave some declarative like “I’d like to cut her nuts off” or something…So what? The pick of an Washington outsider pisses off a bunch of clubby insiders? Bravo Foxtrot Delta.
I fail to see how anything Noonan wrote this morning clashes with what she said on video (I’ve not watched the vid, only read the transcript). I missed where Noonan exalted Palin as some sort of conservative messiah in her piece in the WSJ this morning only to turn around and simply claim she wasn’t the most qualified. 99.9% of the world is going to say “so what?” and move on to the next thing. Consider me one of them.
MMW on September 3, 2008 at 5:31 PM
Palin is extremely qualified to be any president’s VP. Plain isn’t running for President. And to the dismay of the democrats and some … *swear word* republicans that might think McCain is not going to last the next four years. Go *swear word* yourselves.
(Replace the generic ” *swear word* ” with what murphy and noonan said on the link.) And after the Jessee Jackson off mike’ comment. Why would any of these two idiots be this stoo-pid and say this. Wow.
wise_man on September 3, 2008 at 5:31 PM
Under the Straight Talk Express with them. It’s fine if they have those opinions, no need to lie. It’s them who lose credibility, not the ticket.
jtorres138 on September 3, 2008 at 5:31 PM
Umm…. unless Noonan said something about tearing out Palin’s gonads, it isn’t even in the same ballpark.

I had stopped reading Noonan a while back. After her appearance on MSNBC last week where she broke up the anchors about poor mothers whose “feet were going to explode” I was ready to give her another go. Alas, she is now “one of them.” sigh.

I’ve never been more than a mild fan of hers, so I’m not personally bothered by her comment, but it is way too telling. I never wanted to know she felt that way.
Now she knows what the new media is all about though. Integrity actually means something. If you said it in public, the public will probably eventually hear about it. No more of this two-faced journalism.
Esthier on September 3, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Mike Murphy has been pissed at the McCain campaign for weeks, obviously because he wanted to work on it and was frozen out. He even said the “Celebrity” ad (the one with Paris Hilton) was no good. He would never say a good word about the McCain campaign’s tactics. That’s why he’s on MSNBC.
As for Noonan – she’s a skilled writer, but the consummate country club GOPer.

Why anybody ever agrees to do one of these shows after one of these open mic things comes out I will never understand. This sort of thing should be the kiss-of-death for any program, because nobody will be willing to be a guest when they have treated other guests so shabbily.
But I guess the narcissitic need for the chattering class to get themselves in front of a camera is so great they are willing to overlook such things.
