Will Palin get helped by the opposition attacks?

posted at 10:15 am on September 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin has had a wild ride since becoming John McCain’s running mate.  Having governed in Alaska, the Palins haven’t experienced the national spotlight, and the opposition attacks must seem daunting — and in some cases, insane.  But rather than making Americans uncomfortable with Sarah Palin, Charles Mahtesian at Politico believes it might allow Americans to identify more closely with Palin than any of the other candidates:

Fishing permit violations. A blue-collar husband who racked up a DUI citation as a 22-year-old. An unmarried teenage daughter who is pregnant and a nasty child custody battle involving a family member.

All of this, to one degree or another, has surfaced in recent days as a result of efforts to discredit or undermine Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. But these revelations may have the opposite effect: In one sense, they could reinforce how remarkably unremarkable she is.

So far — and it is hard to tell what the future may hold for Palin’s unexpected national candidacy — the travails of the Palin family probably seem awfully familiar to many average Americans. It is this averageness that makes her such a politically promising running mate for John McCain — and such a dangerous opponent for Democrats. Many voters will find it easy to identify with her family’s struggles — a significant advantage in an election where the voting calculus is so unusually and intensely personal.

Color me skeptical on this point.  Last night, The Nation’s John Nichols and I discussed this on BBC Radio, and we both agreed that most of these issues will fade, whether or not one gets repulsed or inspired by them now.  None of them really have anything to do with Palin’s ability to govern, and she’s already established that in Alaska with a highly popular first two years as chief executive of the state.

People relate to Palin with or without these non-issues.  Who can’t relate to a “hockey mom” who went to a state university and worked her way up from the bottom of the political structure, while balancing family needs?  Most people know at least a few women just like her; most people have at least one Sarah Palin in their family.  In contrast, not too many have a POW war hero or a Harvard Law School graduate in their circle of acquaintance.

As Mahtesian says, that’s what makes attacks on Palin so dangerous for the Obama campaign.  Attack a Senator, and people shrug.  Attack a hockey mom, and people recoil from the familiarity of it.

So what should the Obama campaign do?  They may do best to just ignore her.  People don’t usually vote for running mates anyway.  George H. W. Bush won election even after Dan Quayle cratered in his debate with Lloyd Bentson and turned into a big liability on the campaign trail.  Quayle turned into a better VP than most would admit, but during the campaign he did nothing at all to help Bush 41, and he won anyway.  Regardless of who the running-mate is, voters eventually focus on the top of the tickets when making their choice.  Attacks on Palin will gain them nothing, and could cost them significant goodwill among the middle-class voters they need to woo.

I don’t know…do we want a former community organizer whose political experience includes being a half-term senator next in line to the Presidency behind a 66 year old man who could die at any second?

Oh wait…Biden is the VP nominee, isn’t he? I sorta forgot that what with all the attention Baracky is paying to Palin.

That’s your prayer.
The top of the Dem ticket, Obama, has much less experience then Palin. Biden is a career politician, never holding any other position, never running any organization, never having any managerial responsibility, besides running for re-election. Biden knows how to get re-elected, that’s it.
Obama has never had an executive position, never been in private sector, has no knowledge or experience of military, no knowledge or experience of energy, He was an community organizer, then a Senator for 1 year. The sub-committee he headed up never even had a meeting. And that is the top of the ticket…Biden gets re-elected, the consummate insider.

Obama looks like Biden next to her. I mean, do we want a woman who 20 years ago seemingly had aspirations to be a Sportscenter anchor and who’s political experience includes being mayor of a town of 10,000 and a half term as Governor of Alaska next in line to the presidency behind a 72-year-old man with a history of cancer?

As opposed to a man who was a community organizer for a corrupt political machine, a state senator who got elected to a part-time job because he managed to knock his opponents off the ballot on technicalities and then got elected U.S. Senator because he ran against Alan Keyes, and then almost immediately began a run for the presidency of the U.S.?

Let me remind you that Palin is the chief executive of a state with a $9 million budget, $13 million in revenues and 25,000 employees. In the private sector that would be one helluva corporation.

And don;t brin up health issues: Biden has had two aneurysms already.

Sarah’cuda has executive experience where it counts. She runs an entire state. All Obama runs is his mouth.

Ya know, we have all been living this 24/7 since Friday; but 90% of America has been at the beach for Labor Day weekend, or evacuated due to a hurricane, or getting their kids ready to go back to school. This is a hothouse topic right now, mostly inside the media and on the blogs. The VAST majority of Americans still don’t know anything about Sarah Palin, and her speech tomorrow will be her real introduction to America.

Don’t panic! She is going to be fine. She has fired up the base and fired up John McCain, and that’s what we needed most to have any shot at winning this election.

We still haven’t seen the best part of the Palin pick play out fully: she’s now the NEW thing, and Barack Obama isn’t. If Obama is right that America wants change more than experience, then Sarah Palin trumps him.

Isn’t being in a group that works towards a state seceding from the union somewhat Un American?

Wouldn’t it be concerning if an influential member in that group spoke of “Infiltrating” the major parties?

Would it be still MORE concerning if a soon to be VP candidate recorded a message for the group’s annual convention, stating that Alaska has “a great promise to be a self-sufficient state” and encouraging them to “keep up the good work.”

I don’t know…but my vote would not go to someone who was EVER EVEN ASSOCIATED with a group who’s main goal is to fracture the union. Just doesn’t really seem to fit to me.

I have seen this info on numerous sources, but I will gladly retract these statements if someone can show me any proof to the contrary.

Depends on how you define experience, Mister Pea. Leglislative experience? Dems have it. Executive experience, where one is obliged to call the shots and make tough decisions? Sorry, but Bambi and Plugs don’t have it. McCain’s military service as a squadron leader in wartime counts for some. Palin’s experience as a mayor (even of a small town) coupled with her experience as the governor of a state counts for much.

I think it’s because although I’m no Palin fanatic, my life situation is way different from hers and I disagree with her on some issues, I’m taking these attacks on her somehow personally. I have a lot of affinity for Palin because she’s a regular American as am I – no privileged background, no special favors or corrupt political machine (Obama) to grease the wheels, etc.

Remember how quickly black voters closed ranks behind Obama when his campaign played the race card on Bill Clinton. Most Republicans I know thought this election was lost because John McCain did not want and could not get the values voters that turned out in such force for Bush in 2004. Well, he’s got them now, and he doesn’t even have to say a word himself about values for the rest of the campaign.

A 17 year-old girl — a teenager — young lady — had fallen in love with a man.

It didn’t matter that this man was not only married, but was the father of an infant son by his wife — who was again pregnant with their second child.

It did not bother this young lady with this small detail, because she promptly became pregnant with this man’s child.

This woman-child was seventeen and unmarried when she conceived. The father is married with children.

The young lady of whom I am referring; the young lady who was three months with child before marrying the never-divorced father of her child — is, of course, Ann Dunham — the mother of Barack Obama.

No, not just yet. Another week or two, then the teeth get shown.

Too much of the U.S.A. is distracted by barbecue and amusement park and back-to-school and end-of-summer and, oh yes, hurricanes.

Let the initial story (She’s a wife and mother, played sports, beauty queen, reformer) get out a bit first. The “reformer” aspect hints at teeth.

Then, once the nutroots attacks penetrate the mainstream, she gives a speech about sanctity of life or love for children or children are the future. Something nice and family-friendly.

Then, a nice sit-down with a sane Barbara Walters type to talk about how it feels for the press to go after her kids, with reminders of *any* prez or veep kid who had rumors. Evah. All the nasty rumors around Amy Carter or Chelsea Clinton need to be dragged up, as well as the Bush twins.

That’s how to handle it. Play it cool. Hit the news cycle right. Wait until they’re paying attention *and* know why they should be paying attention.

Obama opens lead on McCain in Rasmussen today. 6 points w/leaners and breaking 50%

hope its just because of Labor Day traveling. else the attacks on Palin may be working

jp on September 2, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Traditional bounce from the convention is at least 10%. The McCain campaign expected 15%. This is not good news for Obama, believe me.

After the 1988 Democratic convention, Dukakis led Bush 53-36. By the time the GOP convention was over – a convention that included the gi-normous firestorm over Dan Quayle – it was dead even.

The single dumbest thing McCain can do is give up on Palin.

William Amos on September 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM

not going to happen, she’s raising too much money.

bottom line is the Media has to be forcefully confronted and get down and dirty about it. the point that Journalism is dead in America needs to be noted by John McCain at the top and on down to us at the bottom

jp on September 2, 2008 at 11:24 AM

I disagree. If Obama wins, I will fully support a secession of all the red states. Let him screw up HIS America beyond all recognition…not mine.

SaintOlaf on September 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM

See St. O I was surprized to find you were an Alaskan… I pegged you for the deepest darkest south… And here again your answer sounds so southern. You are difficult to understand.

And a simple and effective argument for anyone who brings up Todd Palin’s DUI in 1986: Well per Obama’s book Obama was doing some coke about that time.

petunia on September 2, 2008 at 11:17 AM

I see what you’re saying, but have to respectfully disagree. If someone from the other regions was running and was associated with a similar group, I would be similarly outraged.

There are other channels, threatening secession is the equivalent to a toddler holding its breath to try and get what it wants.

beefytee on September 2, 2008 at 11:24 AM

When the Watergate Coup started, President Nixon had no problems because of the real success of his Presidency in winning Democrat JFK’s Vietnam War. But, with no Republican Media like today’s talk radio, Nixon was hammered without mercy by the Democrat scum on the Washington Post until what was later described as “spin” during the Clinton Years became grounds for impeachment. What is needed now is ATTACk. Obama’s questions as in Ayers, Pastor Wright, Rezko, the Daly Machine, Farrakhan et al need to examined with a proctolgist like approach.

Will pose this. If McCain dumps Palin the backlash among conservatives would be great. They would not accept another replacement they would look at it as McCain betraying the base.

The single dumbest thing McCain can do is give up on Palin.

I disagree. The single most intelligent thing Mccain can do right now is: Dump Palin and choose the Huck!

SaintOlaf on September 2, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Why does everyone say Hillary broke the glass ceiling? She did not. Her own party did not let her through. Sarah Palin broke the glass ceiling. I laugh when anyone says that Hillary will work hard to help BO win the election. Hillary knows that if he wins, she is a washed up has been.

bloggless on September 2, 2008 at 11:26 AM

And Republicans don’t care about the issue so it’s all good!

petunia on September 2, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Dis ag ree. We hate illegal immigration, we distrust multiculturalism, we want everyone to speak english and sing the national anthem in ‘American.’ Splitting up is not a good thing. Secessionism=balkanization=civil war II=death of the republic.

I care.

I have seen this info on numerous sources, but I will gladly retract these statements if someone can show me any proof to the contrary.

beefytee on September 2, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Well then why don’t you quote and reference those “numerous” sources?
Is the sources like the sources who said Palin’s daughter was really the mother of Trig???
You make the mistake (but I doubt it is a mistake) of saying if someone states a lie, then the person being lied about has to prove it is a lie.
That’s not how it works (except for liars), you come forward with the proof that she wanted Alaska to secede from the union.

The Republicans need to keep pointing to the DailyKos, et al, as an example of how Obama is a “uniter.”

exhelodrvr on September 2, 2008 at 11:27 AM

I think it is a good sign that the lefties are attacking Palin’s family and personal life vice her policies. It shows that even the left knows that most of the country supports her conservative values.

Is this an example of St. Mc’s prior naval traing;piss poor prior planning [PPPP] olde military acronym there?

I think not.

J_Gocht on September 2, 2008 at 11:29 AM

I mean, do we want a woman who 20 years ago seemingly had aspirations to be a Sportscenter anchor and who’s political experience includes being mayor of a town of 10,000 and a half term as Governor of Alaska next in line to the presidency behind a 72-year-old man with a history of cancer?

Tom_Shipley on September 2, 2008 at 10:49 AM

Hmm. A half-term governor and former mayor for Vice President, or a half-term Senator for President?

Easy choice. Especially when you consider that the half-term Senator has no military experience, no executive experience, no foreign policy experience, and has been dead wrong on the most important issues that have arisen during his half-term tenure in the Senate — e.g., the surge (which Obama not only opposed but wrongly predicted would lead to more violence in Iraq); Iranian nuclear ambitions (Obama announced he’d meet with Iran’s leaders with no pre-conditions — then had to backtrack when it was pointed out what a stupid idea that was; Obama also called Iran a “tiny” country that was no real threat to the U.S. — and again had to backtrack when it was pointed out what a stupid statement that was), etc.

Obama has repeatedly demonstrated his lack of readiness to be President — and now his campaign is claiming that his running for President actually qualifies him to be President. Unbelieveable.

AZCoyote on September 2, 2008 at 11:29 AM

This may sound silly but is there some avenue we could take to send emails of support to Sarah Palin. I mean I know she’s a strong woman and I trust she can handle all this mud-slinging but it would be nice to let her know how many people are phyched about her candidacy etc…

bagadeez04 on September 2, 2008 at 11:30 AM

I think another attractive point that Palin has raised that is delighting the right, she has served to reveal what liars and frauds the Democrat part consists of – Femists? Tolerance? Hurricane exploiters?

etc. etc.

That’s firing them up.

Topsecretk9 on September 2, 2008 at 11:30 AM

If Alan Colmes writes a gratuitous slam piece about the health of Trig on the part of his mom; does he and other libs care about putting undue, and uncalled for, “abusive remarks” on a 17 year old pregnant girl whose MOTHER is running for office?

How are their indefensible attacks on Bristol contribute to helpful neonatal care of her baby?

I Hate You Sarah Palin
Judd sets the stage.

By David Kahane

“Yeah, I’m talking about Sarah Barracuda, aka Hurricane Sarah. Where does she get off thinking she can be vice president of the United States? Up against the one million years in the Senate her opponent, Joe Biden, has logged in between expensive rides at taxpayer expense on the Acela, what can she offer? Mayor of a town of six people and ten caribou [sneer]? Miss Congeniality [sneer, sneer]? Illegitimate-child baby-grandma [sneer, sneer, sneer]? Poster chick for “family values” [sneer, sneer, sneer, sneer]?

Sorry, I’m running out of sneers.”
———————————————

“So that’s why we’re having our Wellstone Funeral Moment at the moment. We mean well; we promised ourselves we wouldn’t go over the top with our outright loathing of the Neanderthals who preach “Christian” values while practicing Wiccanism and child sacrifice and who hate black people and gay people and want to destroy the environment just because they can, and want to amass more money than even John Kerry or Jon Corzine or Herb Kohl or Jay Rockefeller or Dianne Feinstein — the five richest senators — or Ted Kennedy or John Edwards or Nancy Pelosi have. That, usually, is the Kos Kidz’s job. Along with speculating exactly how Bush got from My Pet Goat to planting the depth charges that blew up the levees in New Orleans.

But sometimes the mask slips and you can see — whoops! — how much we hate you. Normally we’re against hate in all its forms, and embrace tolerance as one of our defining moral attributes. But when it comes to you conservatives, well, with the best will in the world, we just can’t tolerate you. You’re elitist, you’re judgmental, you’re hypocritical, and we know that deep down you hate us even more than we hate you. Therefore, by any means necessary, we will defeat you this fall. Voter fraud, “walking around” money, legions of lawyers, as many recounts as it takes — bring it on!

Because we need to take back our country. We need to take it back from fascists like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, and give it back to its rightful proprietors, patriots like Henry Wallace, Sidney Hillman, Norman Thomas, Gus Hall, Karl Marx, Leon Trotsky, Joseph Stalin, Saul Alinsky, William Kunstler, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Bobby Seale, and, yes, my guy, the Talking Parrot, you know who.”
————————————————
“We hate you because you’re smart and beautiful and we wish we had women like you on our side.

We hate you.”

The Dems had better not hammer Todd Palin’s DUI too much since Obama’s daddy was such a raging alcoholic and drunk driver that one car accident resulted in the amputation of his legs and the last accident took his life.
