Will Palin get helped by the opposition attacks?

Sarah Palin has had a wild ride since becoming John McCain’s running mate. Having governed in Alaska, the Palins haven’t experienced the national spotlight, and the opposition attacks must seem daunting — and in some cases, insane. But rather than making Americans uncomfortable with Sarah Palin, Charles Mahtesian at Politico believes it might allow Americans to identify more closely with Palin than any of the other candidates:
Fishing permit violations. A blue-collar husband who racked up a DUI citation as a 22-year-old. An unmarried teenage daughter who is pregnant and a nasty child custody battle involving a family member.
All of this, to one degree or another, has surfaced in recent days as a result of efforts to discredit or undermine Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. But these revelations may have the opposite effect: In one sense, they could reinforce how remarkably unremarkable she is.
So far — and it is hard to tell what the future may hold for Palin’s unexpected national candidacy — the travails of the Palin family probably seem awfully familiar to many average Americans. It is this averageness that makes her such a politically promising running mate for John McCain — and such a dangerous opponent for Democrats. Many voters will find it easy to identify with her family’s struggles — a significant advantage in an election where the voting calculus is so unusually and intensely personal.
Color me skeptical on this point. Last night, The Nation’s John Nichols and I discussed this on BBC Radio, and we both agreed that most of these issues will fade, whether or not one gets repulsed or inspired by them now. None of them really have anything to do with Palin’s ability to govern, and she’s already established that in Alaska with a highly popular first two years as chief executive of the state.
People relate to Palin with or without these non-issues. Who can’t relate to a “hockey mom” who went to a state university and worked her way up from the bottom of the political structure, while balancing family needs? Most people know at least a few women just like her; most people have at least one Sarah Palin in their family. In contrast, not too many have a POW war hero or a Harvard Law School graduate in their circle of acquaintance.
As Mahtesian says, that’s what makes attacks on Palin so dangerous for the Obama campaign. Attack a Senator, and people shrug. Attack a hockey mom, and people recoil from the familiarity of it.
So what should the Obama campaign do? They may do best to just ignore her. People don’t usually vote for running mates anyway. George H. W. Bush won election even after Dan Quayle cratered in his debate with Lloyd Bentson and turned into a big liability on the campaign trail. Quayle turned into a better VP than most would admit, but during the campaign he did nothing at all to help Bush 41, and he won anyway. Regardless of who the running-mate is, voters eventually focus on the top of the tickets when making their choice. Attacks on Palin will gain them nothing, and could cost them significant goodwill among the middle-class voters they need to woo.

Nay, not so, TJ. This is about thinking through the situation with some rationality. Not about group-thinking our way to victory.

I live in a similar state that has very rarely voted for a Republican for president in many decades, with the exception of the Reagan landslide. So, I do understand that in our particular cases, not voting or a third party vote will have no impact on the national outcome.
However, I am a “Safety First” person. I don’t trust Obama with the safety of our country.
Second, I know of no other national candidates other than McCain & Palin who have records of successfully fighting corruption within their own parties. Obama comes from and never fought the Chicago Machine:
And, as I posted yesterday on some thread, I am an old man and I do not want to live out my remaining years under the control of the neighborhood “human rights commission.” I am very worried about Obama’s extreme liberal views and their potential impact on our freedoms.
Therefore, even though I have some serious differences with both candidates, I am enthusiastically supporting McCain/Palin.

My thoughts are with you. I cannot imagine the tragedy you have gone through because of your rape. I pray you have nothing but happiness since you have already been through hell!
Branch Rickey on September 2, 2008 at 1:21 PM
No, she will not be helped.
Complaining about the complainers will only galvanize people who already support her.
Undecided voters aren’t going to decide to vote for McCain because people are treating Palin harshly.
Dave Rywall on September 2, 2008 at 1:24 PM
I’m very sorry this happened to you. I can’t even imagine the horror.
On the abortion issue, while I agree with you about choosing the candidate who is the best match my point is just that her stance is going to hurt her with some of the swing voters. They don’t usually get to know many of the policies of the candidates and unfortunately base their vote on one or two things they hear from the media. Sadly, I think they’ll hear that Sarah Palin doesn’t want rape/incest victims to be allowed to get abortions.
gash on September 2, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Great point, hadn’t really considered how consistent it really is. So why aren’t most pro-lifers against abortion in cases of rape/incest? Or are they and I’m just out of touch?
gash on September 2, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Branch Rickey – thanks. Abortion is a tricky subject – I used to be pro-choice until I got pregnant, and then faced with the decision, I chose to become pro-life. I know other women who have been pro-life, and then when faced with motherhood, chose not to face it. It’s something I think every woman should sit down and think about before writing off a candidate simply for her personal beliefs on abortion – time and circumstances change us, and it’s dangerous to only consider a candidate based on one position.
While I may not agree with her 100% on this issue, I’m inclined to side with Gov. Palin anyway because she has shown she stands up for her convictions. This separates her from many on the Left, who are all about choice unless that choice is life.
Anna on September 2, 2008 at 1:32 PM
The media is jumping through hoops to crucify Palin for her daughters pregnancy, while completely ignoring Obama who was in bed with Rezko, and Larry Sinclair.
ARom on September 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM
I meant to type disingenious, rather than dangerous, but I suppose they both work.
Thanks everybody for your words, but it’s something I’ve overcome. I think that I’m not alone, though, in that many average women might be against abortion, but when faced with something horrible like rape or incest, might choose a different path. Although, I’d like to think that it’d be for the health of the mother in these cases.
Anna on September 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM
I admire your courage, convictions and common sense.

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 1:39 PM
Obama’s mother was pro-life. She was unmarried when Barack was conceived.
Herb on September 2, 2008 at 1:42 PM
Rywall – this election was never about undecided voters. It was about consolidating Republican support for McCain. Republican voters HATE the media and will work harder than ever for McCain/Palin now.
The other value of Gov. Palin is the way she has energized Sen. McCain himself and enabled him to pivot his campaign from just being the old guy with the most experience to being the reformer ready to chase the moneychangers out of the temple. No other possible VP pick could have done all that for McCain. Even if Sarah Palin ends up turning off a few independent or undecided voters, it will be worth it.
McCain is trying to steal the “change” mantle from Obama and add a “reform” message to it. All of the attacks so far on Gov. Palin are of the variety that suggest Democrats still think they can turn off conservative voters or scare off moderates. They ought to be concentrating on defending the attacks that are coming on Obama’s connections to the chicago Democratic machine and Joe Biden’s ties to banking lobbyists.

What has me ticked is the main press is using the storm coverage to NOT have to cover the Repub. Convention and thats bull. I hope the Repubs win anyway. The Dems haven’t learned yet. Will they ever? Every smear comes back to bite them but they still go off and do it and they think ignoring the other convention is gonna help. I was expecting them to dig up something on Palin but no they go after her family. What the hell is this? The Republicans just need to deliver facts and promises they can back up. Palin shows she’s feminine enough without expense to her toughness. She’s going to go far in todays world.

This was long ago and forgotten but I meant the issue of “nuance” I was accused of being nuanced in my answer and I said Dems like nuance and Reps don’t care about it…

Loxodonta on September 2, 2008 at 2:30 PM
Yes, she’s a wonderful candidate. I hope she’s not flushing her future down the drain hitching her wagon to a Washington insider unprincipled dirtbag like McCain. If he does a replay of his last 8 years of giving ‘reach arounds’ across the aisle to the democrats, the animosity he’s going to create may transfer on to her, depending on how much she appears to be behind his sh*t policies. My cynicism tells me that McCain is going to use her as cover while he does his normal routine. That’s why all this enthusiasm for her frightens me. We’re betting so much that we’re going to get her policies and beliefs, instead of McCain’s. I think that’s a mistake and all this enthusiasm could turn to anger when we start seeing McCain’s signature moves (ie, screwing the GOP and its platform.) I know nobody wants to hear this. I am no DU plant; simply a conservative that has grown a healthy dislike for John McCain over the last 8 years. Only time will tell, and I hope I’m wrong. I like Palin.
austinnelly on September 2, 2008 at 2:33 PM
John McCain has obviously read the ‘Art of War’; his pick of Sarah Palin was pure genius. The lefty blogs and MSM are directing all their attention to her. She is sucking all the air out of the election news. All the attention is on Palin, not Obama, this can only be an advantage for the McCain\Palin ticket. When the country tunes in to see what Palin has to say, they odds are pretty good that she will dazzle them.
towerh2o on September 2, 2008 at 2:36 PM

petunia on September 2, 2008 at 3:10 PM
YES the attacks help, most Americans are going to relate to their family on one level or another. They are representative of the American Family. So attack them and someone will empathize with them. Dumb but the Left doesn’t think past attacking the target. If checked, most of them probably don’t have military backgrounds, they don’t get strategy. There is nothing sophisticated about smear merchants, they are “brutes”
Dr Evil on September 2, 2008 at 3:22 PM
The left are insular and don’t really understand conservatives or Christians. The fact that they think Bristol Palin’s situation will hurt Palin’s candidacy with conservative voters shows a shocking level of ignorance. Conservatives and Christians on the other hand, understand the left very well. We’re faced with them daily in our papers and news programs and in our universities. So we know how they think and how they argue.
There is another aspect to this whole issue. It is not only the Christian/Conservative angle that angers the Left. Sarah Palin, in their eyes, is also a hick. How dare anyone from Alaska, I mean my God ALASKA!, dare to come in and think she can assume a position of power in OUR government. This also explains why some conservative commentators have been slow to warm to Palin’s candidacy. They have a bias, even if they’re not aware of it, against anyone who is not in the elite set. If Palin had been governor of Delaware, she would have gotten a more favorable reaction from the pundits.
Only one more day to go. I suspect that with Palin’s speech on Wed. nite – and I’m confident in predicting that she will blow doors – the window for stopping Palin’s momentum will have closed. The elites know this and they have one day left to frame her and marginalize her.
Their fear and anger is paltable. Howard Kurtz compared her to Caligua’s horse. Expect worse in the next 24 hours.
PackerBronco on September 2, 2008 at 3:37 PM
Okay… I’m getting tired of the MSM propaganda. If this was John Edwards, it wouldn’t even make it to the front page. This is an extreme example of Liberal Media Bias. Where is the talk of Edwards’ child? Compare the two. Photographs of Edwards’ child, hush money given out, and the intentional cover-up of the MSM. Versus, the vicious unsubstantiated rumors of Palin, that the MSM reports as truth without further research. Mmmm… bias much.

I hereby dub myself Spokesperson for Social Conservatives. As such I hereby issue the following statement on behalf of Social Conservatives across America.
“Revelations about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy do not in any way dampen our enthusiasm for Sarah Palin as the republican Vice Presidential nominee. To the contrary, we find Gov. Palin’s poise, grace, and followthrough on her core beliefs to be honorable and praiseworthy. We support her in her decision to choose life for her youngest child. We support Bristol Palin’s decision to choose life for her own child. We do not hold her mistake against her. She is welcome to the same grace and forgiveness we have all been reciepiants of at one time or another. The way the Left has savagely attacked the Palin family has only galvanized our support for Sarah Palin and will continue to do so.”

The sort of change wafted about in just about every presidential campaign (if you’re not the incumbent) is go after the other guy as an “insider”….
Hmmmm, once again….
Sooo…these folks now seem to all be kvetching on cue that Gov. Palin hasn’t got any experience…but they don’t want “insiders”….
…and you get experience by being “inside”….
…and Mr. O picked a running mate who himself became an “insider” when Mr. O was a callow 11-year-old….
I’m soooooo confused…I’ve all but got this whole “dialectic” thing figured out, and then they through me this curveball.

On one paw, I agree with you – we are electing McCain to POTUS, not Palin.
On the *other* paw, I don’t see another path to POTUS for a sane, rational person like Palin. Gifted politician or not, it’s a very unlikely route from Alaska to DC. Suspect her longer-term plan called for a stop-over in the Senate, but then Huck wouldn’t leave Mitt alone….
On the *other* paw (it’s good to be a cat!) If McCain/Palin flame out and crash, so what? Mitt is (relatively) clean and can run against Obama in 2012. Mitt/Fred! vs. Obama/Biden?
On the *final* paw, if McCain dies or otherwise cannot serve, I think she’ll do fine in the “caretaker” role for as long as it takes. Less experience than Romney or (shudder) Huck, but more than Obama, and she’ll have McCains’ team advising her.
Don’t think *just* tactical, think strategic. Change the game.

A lot of people on the conservative / libertarian as well as the LEFT side don’t like Sarah Palin for a variety of reasons
1)She is a political neophyte and McCain cannot used Obama’s inexperience against him because McCain himself chose a VP candidate that have the same inexperience as Obama
2) McCain in having Palin as his VP nominee and is heavily betting that he can have a massive defection of Hillary supporters on his side
3) Palin just had a baby who have Down’s syndrome coupled with a daughter who is pregnant and it is selfish of her running for the position of VP when she could just say no and have her take care of her daughters in Alaska
4) She was a member of AIP
5) The Bridge to Nowhere decision .
Okay , since I had listed some of the most popular objections against Palin , I will list why who ever McCain will get as VP will not be good enough as well.
1 ) Mitt Romney : In a normal and level headed election , Romney would be the logical and excellent pick as Vice President . He got executive experience as CEO of a successful private company for several years and later become Governor of Massachusetts . The cons , he’s rich , he’s successful and he is a practicing Mormon . The other thing that made a lot of conservatives not happy with him was the increase state taxes in Massachusetts .
2) Eric Cantor . This Congressman would make a fine vice president candidate . Only one big problem . Are you guys ready for it . He is a practicing Jew .
3) Fred Thompson : Good VP Pick if he is 20 years younger .
4) Mike Huckabee 2 words, Christian Minister .
5) Bobby Jindal : Like Sarah Palin , very successful self made man and is a relative Washington outsider . The cons , well , does the term inexperience and race traitor come to mind ?
5) Tim Pawlenty : An excellent choice for VP as well with almost the same success like Mitt Romney . The cons , the stadium funding issue and he is a practicing Christian .
6) Joe Lieberman – A party traitor and a Jew to boot
You see , ladies and gentlemen , it does not matter who McCain would pick , the MSM , the Kos Kidzs will discredit the nominee and what’s worse , the conservatives will do the same thing because the VP selected is not good enough for them . Governor Pawlenty , Congressman Cantor , Joe Lieberman and Mike Huckabee as well as Mitt Romney would be attacked because of their deep devotion to their faith . Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty would also be criticized because they are rich and out of touch with the masses . Bobby Jindal would be criticized by race mongers for converting to Roman Catholicism in order to further his ambition as well as betraying his race by being a Catholic instead of being a Hindu . Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman will be criticized for being in the Metamucil crowd . Oh yeah , there is a special place in Hell for Joe Lieberman if the Democratic party have anything to say about it . And I haven’t talk about the abortion issue , the border and immigration issue , the taxes issue and a lot of other things that people would hang this guys for being not qualified .
The media and leftists will use anything against these other candidates , their wealth , their faith , their families , all for the sake of getting Obama in office . In fact , if truth be told , it would have been much better if McCain just concede the election already and have Obama and Biden respectively become President and Vice President tomorrow without the benefit of a single vote because in the eyes of the media , the Left and the Democratic Party . Obama is the One , our Saviour and our Deliverer and no puny Election should block His way to Glory . The Republican scums should be better off hiding in their holes and hope that the Uber Messiah would be merciful to them .

As someone who is pro-abortion, meaning it’s a privacy issue that is nobody else’s business, and as a person who hates kids and will never understand how anyone has more than one on purpose, and would REQUIRE all pregnant women to prove they can afford to raise said kid without any government assistance, and be forced to name the father of said kid so he can raise it if he so chooses, or give the kid up for adoption, and if all that fails I would require them to have an abortion and get sterilized so they can’t can’t pregnant again….
….the only type of pro-life advocates I have any respect for at all are those, like Reagan and Palin, who do not make any exception for rape or incest.
Life is life. A baby that is conceived through rape or incest is just as innocent as any other baby. The fact that a baby may have been conceived through rape or incest is not the baby’s fault. It’s still a life.
Pro-lifers like Palin do not make exceptions for the “health” of the mother, either. They only make exceptions for the life of the mother. “Health” is too broad a term and can mean anything from a life threatening condition to too much stress.
Don’t forget, also, that the woman who was Roe in Roe v. Wade lied about being raped.
Being pro-life means just that. There is no choice involved. If you allow the “choice” part to play any roll in abortion, such as with rape, then you have to allow it in all cases.
Anyone who claims to be pro-life and makes allowances for rape or incest is a hypocrite.

Conservatives must face the possibility that the influence of biased news coverage, liberal indoctrination in most American universities and public schools and the impact television/entertainment over the past decades has the potential to change our value system and, thus, change voting patterns. After all, when an Al Gore and/or a John Kerry can come within a gnat’s hair of leading the nation, red flags should go up.
There will always be unsavory characters trying to get elected to the highest office in the land. It will be the PEOPLE who are finally convinced by propaganda to place their vote for such characters. The U.S. is now exposed to the same type of organized propaganda on the left as the Nazis employed in the 1930’s……except it is not government imposed; it is all done voluntary by those members of “The Church of the Left” whom have succeeded in gaining influence and power in the areas necessary to mold public opinion.
Hitler wanted “change”. While Obama is not a Hitler (yet??) we must remember that Hitler was initially placed in power democratically. And the Obama supporters who blindly give him their support remind us of the “useful idiots” of 1939 raising their right arms shouting “Sieg Heil!”. Yup, change we can believe in!
To think conservative thought can survive in the sea of liberal propoganda is being a little too naive. We are a nation bent upon suicide. And Obama in power may very well be the tipping point necessary to get us beyond the point of no return. Tyranny, like barbarism, can reappear at any time. And it seems man is bent upon allowing it to do so. We have met the enemy……and it is US!

His dad knew he needed money and a job, but no company would hire him so he became a lobbyist to support his habit.
He has obtained over 2 million dollars from his dad’s votes and friends, all the while keeping his drug habit alive.
Now prove that he is not…

See how that goes?
How about this?

Michelle Obama has been meeting secretly with Bernadine Dorn to set up a counter government inner city program to teach Marxism and revolution to the inner city school children.
They have met several times and have laid the ground work for the after school inner city program. Laced with quotes from Karl Marx, it will be billed under the guise as a
“after school integrity program” ASIP in Chicago will be the first of the Marxist style schools dedicated to the overthrow of the tradional school system.
Now prove she has never met with Dorn…

See how this works???

Holy moly, DinobotPrime is a 15 year old loon?
1. She ran a city and a state. There’s a big difference between being a professional voter (see Congress) and an executive. She has more experience running a government than either Biden or Obama. On the other hand, John McCain was a leader of men during war (well, Viet Nam). McCain freezes the Dem ticket on inexperience, not the other way around, just goes to show you’re a lefty playing a righty…people don’t usually pitch as well opposite handed. McCain also freezes Obama out on the Washington “insider” crap Obama sold his faithful prior to picking Biden, one of the ultimate insiders.
2. McCain having Palin, who’s sex is only a concern to the closet bigots (that’s you Democrats/Libs) is because of her values, reformer tilt (she walks the walk) and a strong person. She was on the short list among Conservatives for a few months now and was mentioned several times here in fact. Being a female is just be a bonus and a very savvy move because it also freezes the racism card with the sexism card.
3. More of your closet-bigotry showing through…Todd is going to be Mr. Mom, but beside that, you don’t even comprehend your bigotry because you know nobody asks Obama about his kids, or McCain about his adopted kid, or asked John Kennedy about his young kids. Not to mention, none of the liberal media would ask a female Democrat this line of questioning.
4. Already disproved tripe. I think the majority of conservatives are more concerned that Democrats are, or becoming, out and out Socialists. We’re worried that someone that has associations with Ayers and who’s spiritual leader and pastor for 20 years is an anti-American racist is so wildly popular with voters and might become the PotUS, wouldn’t we be similarly worried if someone like David Duke were in line to be PotUS?
5. The Bridge to Nowhere decision. Minor pork barrel issue. We can easily match this with stories on the other side of the aisle. Also, we can counter this with Palin’s *actions* in cutting excess in her government, cutting taxes and putting conservative economic principles to work in AK.
No one on the right is suggesting McCain drop Palin, the reaction by the right has been extremely strong and supportive, especially through all of the stupid smear campaign crap that the left has thrown at her.
Wow, bigoted much? BTW, *no one* on the right sees being rich as a “con”, we like success. More of the lefty shining through Dumbo.
Your racism is down right creepy. Can you speak in public like this, or do you regularly get beaten? I’m betting that you are (a) unemployed and (b) younger than 25.
Moron, Thompson is 66 (August 1942). Twenty years younger and he’s 46 which is 2 years younger than Obama and only 2 years older than Palin. If such youth and inexperience is a problem for you, then being 46 and a VP choice is going to cut it for you. Do just a moment’s worth of research would you dumb-ass? Again, you’re obviously a lefty troll cruising a right-oriented blog. A real right winger would have known a bit about teh Fred!
Could you be any more inane? No one on the left cares if Jesse Jackson is a Christian reverend/minister/pastor, nor Al Sharpton. Do you think the right actually thinks its a con to have a devout Christian as a Presidential nominee…I’m beginning to wonder if you’ve ever even spoken to a conservative.
Yes, whenever I think how the liberal trolls will play this. You see, this is the Nth reason why we know you’re not a conservative/righty, we don’t care what color someone is, and the only ones that call other “race traitors” and “Uncle Tom” are the liberals (see the treatment of Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, etc.). As long as they are on the left, they are “historical”, but if they are conservatives, they are “race traitors”. Newsflash Dumbo, Martin Luther King was a Republican. Now, while you pick your jaw off the floor, I *double dog dare you* to call MLK a race traitor. C’mon, you can do it…
Bigots are typically ignored, and for good reason.
I’m calling you out as a troll and a bigot.
Not a “con” except to possibly atheists (sorry, AP) and bigots.
Yeah, racist bigot is all up in here. The con on Lieberman is that he is a liberal, his policies and positions, with the exception of Iraq, would not work on the conservative ticket. McCain is already a RINO in the eyes of most here, Lieberman would seal McCain’s loss as a center-left candidate to the far left Obama/Biden ticket.
I blame this on your parents, they shouldn’t let you use the internet unsupervised. Get some help young man/woman.

Sarah will eviscerate Biden in the VP debate.
He parrots sound bites that have been carefully scripted by political consultants, and she speaks from her heart.
It is so absolutely refreshing to see a candidate who is not part of the ruling elite.
She is a blessing.

I believe this was precisely the intent of nominating Palin: McCain’s camp knew that Democrats would overshoot in their attacks, and wind up revealing themselves as the elitists they are.
Remember: America more closely resembles the Jerry Springer show than it does open mic night at the local poetry cafe.
