Video: St. Paul police taking tough line on protesters
posted at 9:45 am on September 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Last night, I got a dispatch from the Huffington Post — I’m on their e-mail list, it appears — informing me of the “illegal” arrest of Amy Goodman outside the Republican convention. The HuffPo posted a press release from Amy Goodman’s organization, Democracy Now, declaring her arrest “illegal” and unprovoked. The activists caught it on tape:
Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her.
Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfuly detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman’s crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.
Actually, Goodman’s crime appears to have been obstruction of justice and interfering with police in the performance of their duty — just from Democracy Now’s description. The video makes this even more clear. They tell her twice to move back, and when she refuses to cooperate, they arrest her. The police did not “violently manhandle” her; they arrested her in the normal manner by ensuring that she was physically secured, for their own protection.
Goodman had no right to interfere with the arrest of her colleagues. She could have bailed them out later, or perhaps found them an attorney, but interfering with police while making arrests is in fact against the law here in St. Paul and everywhere else. She wasn’t defending freedom of the press — she was trying to get herself arrested along with her activist partners.
I enthusiastically support the right of people to stage political protests, as long as they do not break the law. If they break the law, they had better be prepared to suffer the consequences. When those consequences arrive, pardon me if my sympathies lie with the police who keep our community safe and protect free speech for everyone rather than the agitators trying to disrupt the exercise of free speech in the Xcel Center this week.

Thanks. Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now” show comes on here in Philly on Ch. 35, and is, I must admit, one of my guilty pleasures (as is watching the wacky vegetarian/natural foods cooking lady while I eat roast beef with mayo along with a Diet Coke).
The parade of moonbats on Democracy Now is one of the best comedy shows on TV. She interviews the likes of Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, Noam Chomsky, etc. I can’t wait for her take on this.

A nice little rundown from my local station here in MN of peaceful lefties showing their love:
-Protesters attacked delegates, smashed windows, punctured car tires and threw bottles Monday.
-Delegate Rob Simmons told the station that a group of protesters came toward his delegation and tried to rip the credentials off their necks and sprayed them with a toxic substance that burned their eyes and stained their clothes.
-Terry Butts, a former Alabama Supreme Court justice who is a convention delegate, was on a bus taking delegates to the arena when a brick through the window sprayed glass on him and two others.
-From Instapundit: “Ran into Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit on my way into the Xcel Center. His bus was attacked by protesters who dropped sandbags from an overpass, but he was unscathed”.

Obey the cops and you won’t get arrested. It’s that easy. But these libs don’t seem to get that.
Secretly they like getting arrested. They like to play the victim. Being injustly detained by the evil GOP police state fits in nicely to just about any lib groups play narrative.

According to left wing philosophy, you’re not supposed to actually do anything to troublemakers, you’re supposed to just talk to them about it.
Seriously though, I’m glad the cops are taking the steps necessary to keep troublemakers under control. We don’t need any more incidents like MM had to endure last week–or worse.
I’m all in favor of free speech. But free speech does not equate to unlimited freedom of action. That’s something a lot of those “great intellectuals” on the left have yet to figure out.

Powerline reported a lefty group surrounded and rocked a bus filled with Cub Scouts who were on their way to be an honor guard at the convention. The kids were apparently unhurt, but terrified.
Gateway Pundit says some people were dropping sandbags from overpasses. One hit his bus, but didn’t go through the windshield.

The police don’t have time to debate with lunatics on the street, or herd them back to where they belong over and over. Debate the law in court. Not on the street. The police have too many other things on their plate.

BISHOP:
All true. I’m here, just a volunteer, but sandbags were dropped from an overpass onto more than one convention bus yesterday. Talked to some other law enforcement and they got hit with urine and feces yesterday. Bricks thrown and some more aggressive protesters threw bricks at convention goers. Got to hear a lot of this on a police radio while “floating” at the convention. How these guys can retain their composure in the face of this is amazing!

Elric66 on September 2, 2008 at 10:05 AM
mimi,
They don’t need to be retaining their composure. Anyone caught throwing bricks or sandbags at vehicles or pedestrians should be treated like someone firing a gun. Anyone caught with the weapons in their possession should be treated like any other criminal caught with a weapon, unless they can show good reason why they should be carrying such a thing.
Immolate on September 2, 2008 at 10:05 AM
You’ve said it all, Ed. I saw this earlier and thought exactly the same thing.
I am also absolutely convinced that these idiots intentionally get themselves arrested for the sole purpose of making ridiculous claims on the internet about it and trying to impress their idiot friends with how brave and victimized they were.
There hasn’t been a valid or meaningful protest since Martin Luther King walked the earth. Everything and everyone since are frauds who are obsessed with playing victim and feeling like they are part of a history greater than they will ever be.

Here’s a tip: If a police officer says, “Get back,” GET BACK.
There is a time to try to free your colleagues. It is called “Court.” You don’t try to free them as they are being arrested.
My advice is good advice. You don’t have to follow it. But if you don’t, you can expect a large and entirely unasked-for faceful of mace.
Just sayin’.

Many moons ago I was a police officer in Oregon and had the opportunity to see these types of fools in places such as Eugene and Medford, cities which are loosely considered ‘headquarters’ for the anarchist movement.
Let me just say that the Star Wars cantina scene has nothing on the people I dealt with; they are borderline insane and have interesting ways of resisting arrest.

If it wasn’t for racial hate and class envy the left would have no reason to exist. These are just Bill Ayers protoges who are trying to make up “for not doing more” in the 60′s. Wearing Obama for President shirts gives it away. Liberalism is really a “progressive” disease.
volsense on September 2, 2008 at 10:12 AM
As others have said, we have to take a hard stance against protesters throwing deadly objects at people and vehicles. And throwing body waste at anyone should be considered assault with a deadly weapon, the victim has no idea what sort of vile diseases these dirty hippies have!! I am glad to see the cops there making it clear that they are going to stand firm, especially by only giving Ms. Goodman two verbal warnings before taking her into custody… They gave her the chance to back off, and she refused. She knew what the consequences of her refusal to comply were! Good job on the part of the officers there.
Funny comment from my Wife (who comes from a very liberal family) yesterday- after telling her about the violence at the RNC convention she said to me “funny how we did not see that sort of thing at the Democrat convention”. I keep telling her that there are two kinds of people in America, and eventually she will listen. I do have to give her credit though, I have got her to be a conservative for the most part, and after only 7 years of being married! She always was a fast learner…

Sooo, what? Because you groan “don’t arrest me” during the commission of a crime, they suddenly can’t arrest you? Back during my active duty MP days, one warning was all I felt inclined to give you, and sometimes not even that. Crossing a police line is stupid enough, and just looking at one, you should know better. If they would’ve bounced her head off the paddy wagon a few times, I couldn’t be bothered to give a frig.

Excuse me if I doubt left-wing accounts of such police actions. Last night on “Free Speech TV” (which Amy Goodman often hosts) they talked about the Michelle Malkin incident in Denver. They said she got upset because she isn’t used to people disagreeing with her using facts and reasoned argument. LOL. Oh yeah, the video shows that all right.
Paul-Cincy on September 2, 2008 at 10:24 AM
One of my sons got involved with a few of his friends years ago and they were going to carpool to an “event” and engage in “protest.” I didn’t tell him nor his friends not to go…thought it’d be an enlightening experience for them. Asa they made their plans and a few of us parents looked at some of the literature they had obtained, a day or so before they left, I (and two other parents) calmly told the kids something along the line of “if you get caught up in this thing, and get your butt arrested, you and you alone will have to come up with bail, and legal fees and the cost of a lawyer, and you alone will have to tell your employer exactly why you did not show up to work, and you alone will have to explain to an employer why you have answered ‘yes’ on that question ‘have you ever been arrested?’. Don’t call us to come get you. Your choice, your decision.”
They went to a Detroit Lions game instead.
Arrest these “protestors” not for protesting, but for endangerment, assault, battery, attempted murder (in the case of the buses) and any other felony offense that fits. Set bail appropriately high. Then if any are under 18, go after the parents. In this state a parent can be held civily liable for certain criminal acts committed by a minor.
If these protestors want to play in the adult world…treat them like adults. It cuts both ways.
coldwarrior on September 2, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Goodman had no right to interfere with the arrest of her colleagues.
You just don’t get it, do you Ed? Typical knuckledraggin’ rethuglikkan. Lefty elites are ABOVE the law. Don’t you see that laws are made for the little people and that the elites are immune to such laws?
How ironic though, that if these people were really in charge, or should I say WHEN they ARE in charge (like in the Soviet Union) dissenters are tied together in twos, taken to a ditch, one of them is shot and the other is dragged down by the weight of the dead one and buried alive.
Tony737 on September 2, 2008 at 10:25 AM
No kidding. What they are doing is not protest but in fact terrorism and it should not be tolerated. The perpetrators should be shot in the act or arrested for attempted murder. These are not pranks. They are attempts to kill and injure people that don’t agree with them and it’s time we treat them as the terrorists they are.

Cody1991 on September 2, 2008 at 10:31 AM
In the case of dropping things from overpasses–definitely attempted murder.
In the case of rocking busses–terroristic acts, whatever the correct local charge is. Philip Bobbitt’s definition of terrorism fits: the use of violence or the threat of violence to deter people from doing what they have a legal or legitimate right to do.
In other cases–assault, of whatever degree.
I really, really hope that these cases go to court, and go as felonies. I hope that whatever footage can be subpoena’d is, and that this becomes a cause celebre, and that more people start to treat the Violent Left as what it is: a hive of criminals intent on destroying the Constitution, including the right to vote, the right to peaceably assemble, and the right to petition the government for their grievances.
njcommuter on September 2, 2008 at 10:32 AM
The officers did exactly as they should.
A police officer will first ask you to obey him/her.
If you are dumb enough not to comply, they will then tell you to obey.
If your stupidity goes even beyond that and you still do not comply, expect to be cuffed and stuffed and taken to jail. And if you happen to be really really stupid and resist, expect to lose the fight, be treated for your injuries, and then taken to jail.

Alinsky also taught that in some cases the mission of the People’s Organization could be aided if the organizer was able to get himself arrested and thereafter exploit the publicity he derived from the arrest. “Jailing the revolutionary leaders and their followers,” Alinsky said, “… strengthens immeasurably the position of the leaders with their people by surrounding the jailed leadership with an aura of martyrdom; it deepens the identification of the leadership with their people.” It shows, he said, “that their leadership cares so much for them, and is so sincerely committed to the issue, that it is willing to suffer imprisonment for the cause.”[87] But Alinsky stipulated that organizers should seek to be jailed only for a short duration (from one day to two months); longer terms of incarceration, he said, have a tendency to fall from public consciousness and to be forgotten.[88]

After seeing pictures of black hooded rioters attacking with hammers, I propose a new law: once a riot situation is declared, anyone wearing a mask is charged with a felony. The only two reasons for wearing a hood in such a situation is the ability to vandalize while hiding your identity or the willingness to abet such vandals by affording them cover.

Yes, Mike the neighborhood policeman, walking through Beaver Cleaver’s neighborhood, has all the time in the world to figure out who the culprit is or isn’t and admonish the guilty and have the kids over to the police station for cookies and milk.
But, in the real world…ANYONE challenging the directives of a police officer, or group of officers, in a riot situation or a situation bordering on riot, cannot reasonably expect that each protestor/culprit will get to sit down with the cop over cookies and milk to explain their position or their relative level of participation. Grab an officer, get in his way, or dare to try to wrest a person under detention from a cop, or assist to that end…and you have broken the law…in all 50 states.

The only exception to that, I did see Newt last night on Fox, he mentioned that there were 2 groups of protesters, the anti-war, and the anarchists. They showed one clip of guys busting a window and rolling a big planter around. Other than that, nothing on our domestic terrorists.

So does having them fumigated and de-loused.
I don’t even know if you can sterilize wood.

Spar the rod, spoil the hippie.
Yes, she was so trying to get arrested. The Cop ‘escorts’ her to the side walk, then she tries to break through the line yelling, “Don’t arrest me.” That’s like me seeing a cop car stopped at an intersection waiting for the light to turn green only to have me hit the gas speeding through the light yelling, “Don’t give me a ticket!”
Powerline reported a lefty group surrounded and rocked a bus filled with Cub Scouts who were on their way to be an honor guard at the convention. The kids were apparently unhurt, but terrified.

Well it had to be younger ones. The older ones know how to shoot.
Nor was the video conveniently cut. ;)

The first thing I noticed: She was pushed OUT of the street; he was pushed INTO the street.
(Actually, that was really the second thing I noticed. Our stormtroopers are a LOT better dressed and more professional than their stormtroopers.)

These guys have convinced themselves that (in the words of Nancy Pelosi) civilization itself is at stake, and therefore anything you do is justified.
