Video: “How can a woman run a state and bring up … five children at the same time?”

This should go a long way towards redeeming Trotta on the left for once joking about Obama being assassinated. They’re arguing at cross-purposes here: Kelly’s clearly right in principle that the argument’s sexist but Trotta’s point is that whether it is or not, some voters are going to be persuaded by it and act accordingly. Probably true, but is she sure they’re conservatives? As Goldstein notes, the “new feminism” takes a dim view of Republican women straying too far from the nursery.

No the new “feminism” takes a dim view of both parents running hell bent for leather at their own goals over their family.

Keep firing

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Again, the ‘arguments’ fall on deaf, conservative ears.

They simply don’t ‘get’ conservatives and surely don’t understand Christians.

Religious_Zealot on September 2, 2008 at 2:28 PM

How can a woman make cracks about the murder of presidential candidates and stay on television at the same time?

MadisonConservative on September 2, 2008 at 2:28 PM

how can Barrack Hussein take care of his 6 Fathers-in-law and destitute 1/2 brother in Africa if he is President???

SDarchitect on September 2, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Well, there is that accessory called her husband. We do tend to play a role in the whole child-rearing thing.

Slublog on September 2, 2008 at 2:28 PM

As Goldstein notes, the “new feminism” takes a dim view of Republican women straying too far from the nursery.

Guess no one can understand the women who work their tails off to help support the family as well as raise a child.

Hmmm, I guess nannies for those who can afford them are the only ones allowed to work.

upinak on September 2, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Better question: How can McCain take care of his poor, immigrant daughter if he’s DEAD?????

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

How can these people sleep at night? I mean, it’s got to be tough keeping it straight in their head about whether to be sanctimonious or not when discussing “working women”.

Here, I’ll make it easy for you: Liberal woman, I must use glowing praise. Conservative woman, I must use righteous indignation.

I don’t know but considering three are much older, she, and Todd, probably does it the same way John Kennedy, with Jacqueline, did so when John was running the country as President!

How can a woman make cracks about the murder of presidential candidates and stay on television at the same time?

Are comments about Obama being assassinated back on the table, perhaps? Because it seems very acceptable to talk about McCain dying on day 1.

I want to know if Palin’s daughter’s child’s father’s uncle’s former roommate’s cousin was the head of the Arian Nation. If so, why hasn’t Palin denounced that person?

I sure am tired of liberals telling me how Christian conservative women think and behave. I think I can figure it out, being one myself and all.

aero on September 2, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Amazing and revolting. The same leftist media that wouldn’t report on John Edwards, doesn’t want to touch the controversial relationships of Obama and doesn’t seem to have any interest in Joe Biden’s lobbyist son, chases down every whisper about Palin’s family. Disgusting.

Star20 on September 2, 2008 at 2:36 PM

My granny brought up 8 kids while teaching and helping run a farm. Or is this woman claiming that a woman can’t “run a state and bring up kids” because women are genetically incapable of doing more than 2 things at once?

mjk on September 2, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Bennett “almost lost his mind”? This woman has lost all credibility and should not be on television anymore.

Is this what we are reverting to? What happened to the Women’s Lib movement? Since when it is impossible to be a parent and a career person at the same time? This is so stupid, but I hope the Left keeps running with it. They keep shooting themselves in various body parts, at this rate there will be nothing left by the election.

“Get back in the kitchen and make me some PIE!”

Yeah, going with that “anecdotal” conservative double-secret inner circle quote, eh, Liz?
Yeah, get used to the notion that fewer and fewer Americans believe a word you people say anymore.

bbz123 on September 2, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Apparently Liz Trotta hasn’t heard these two words: Todd Palin

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 2, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Megan was not being rude. I thought she didn’t attack Trotta’s pathetic “conservatives are asking these questions” line enough. Megan rightly pointed out that everyone she had been talking to in St. Paul were praising the Palin decision. Who are these so-called “conservatives” that Trotta is talking about anyway. She didn’t get very specific. Therefore, she was making it up. And trying to legitimatize that the question should be asked.

Heh.
It’s like the liberal open-minded friends of mine who are so so shocked that I’m not married but managed to travel all over the place by my little self. It’s like because of my belief system and my vagina, I’m genetically incapable of boarding a plane, taking a cab, and bartering in the souks of Jerusalem and Jordan.

Lawrence, they DON’T know it, which makes it even worse. They only associate with other liberal idiots who think exactly the same way they do – “of COURSE, conservatives think that women should stay home with their children! EVERYONE knows that! (At least, everyone I know knows that!)” They would be completely floored that we are insulted by such statements.

What must they think of the people of Alaska then, who elected Sarah Palin in a landslide? Are they all raging liberals? She had four children when she was elected.

rockhauler on September 2, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Oh, yeah, in answer to the central question of the post:

“How can a woman run a state and bring up … five children at the same time?”

With the help of her perfectly capable and very involved husband, of course.

And it will soon be down to three, by the way. Track is already off on his own, and Bristol will soon be establishing her own home and family, which leaves three. Perfectly manageable for a VP and her willing Mr. Mom husband who has put his career on hold for just this purpose. No more stressful or difficult than Michelle Obama’s job would be bringing up the Obamalettes on her own while her husband runs around being POTUS, a far more demanding and time-consuming job than VP.

Michelle Obama should actually be very insulted by all this. The implication, by extension, is that she is no more than a glorified babysitter for her husband’s children and that he is not expected to take any meaningful role in their upbringing at all because he will be too important and busy to concern himself with family matters if he succeeds in becoming POTUS.

Last I checked one of the “kids” had joined the Army and was on his way to Iraq. The next in line is 17, pregnant, and about to be married. The next is old enough that she doesn’t need a sitter. That leaves the two youngest who will probably be with their father, who is a stay at home dad, a lot.

Ooh, I disagree. I think Trotta was grossly misrepresenting the truth of her opinion, suggesting instead that she was hearing “from conservatives” that, essentially “a woman’s place is in the home”.

To which conservatives does Liz Trotta listen to from her perch in the New School Far Left Liberal Greenwich Village Ivory Tower?

Kelly was very quick to call BS, but I don’t think she was necessarily rude, and I think she understood exactly what Trotta was saying.

Jaibones on September 2, 2008 at 2:56 PM

“which party is full of the preachy smarm artists?

I dont know but the republican party used to be the party of family values. Not the party of women who should be home watching their children so they arent getting preggers by high-school hockey players.

but the good news is …they are getting married. As you know, forced marriages of 17 year olds are always wonderful places to grow up if you are a child. Poor thing.

Roger Waters on September 2, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Sorry, but I think Liz Trotta is enunciating what is, in fact, the conservative position for many family values conservatives. And Megyn Kelly’s shrieking and getting angry over Trotta’s comments betrays her cluelessness. She comes off sounding like Gloria Steinem and trying to impose the Steinem-Friedan view on conservatives.

Ross Douthat has some related thoughts on Palin’s “baby problem”:

From what I’ve read as governor she brings the kid to the office with her. Geez. It’s not like she’s going to be dumping him at the local day care.

Eff this, we’re supposed to be superwomen, remember? We’re supposed to do everything men do and better. In 2 inch heels and backwards, remember?

Puh-leeze, ladies, get over yourself. Just because Sara’cuda’s a conservative and not a liberal doesn’t make her any less of a great lady.

I saw this earlier and I thought that Megyn wasn’t listening and was rude.

Spot on. One of those cases where you and I agree.

Debbie Schlussel on September 2, 2008 at 2:57 PM

You all weren’t listening either. I’m on Megyn’s side but she ran right over what Trotta (no liberal at all) said.

And since when are conservatives pustulating that women and men are the same?

Oh Roger, Roger, glass houses are not good dwelling places.

Well, partly right. But Sarah isn’t going to be raising 5 kids as VP. One will be off in Iraq. Another will be married and likely back in Wasilla.

That leaves three kids, which is only one more than the Kennedy’s had in the White House. Where was the consternation when Kennedy ran with two children under three with one born right after he was elected. Oh yeah, that was then, when a man worked and the woman stayed bare-foot and in the White House kitchen.

That’s a convenient attitude for the left to take now.

How about that?
