The Eagleton scenario; Update: HuffPo pushing Eagleton now

“If McCain drops Palin,” writes Jim Treacher in the comments to the Headlines item on this, “he may as well drop out of the race.” Agreed. It’d be the buzzkill di tutti buzzkills for a party that hasn’t had a buzz on since … 2003, maybe? The base will, simply, melt down. I was skeptical that the left’s attacks are evidence of panic, but now that the Eagleton thing is suddenly popping up — Ben Smith mentioned it last night, now Joshua Green, and I think NBC mentioned it earlier — I’m starting to wonder. Why on earth would McCain dump her? What does the media have to show for all these breathless scandals they’ve dug up? We found out her daughter’s pregnant, but McCain probably knew about that in advance; in any case, the base has rallied around her in the aftermath and independents are unlikely to care two months down the road. We found out she was once a member of the Alaska Independence Party — except that, er, she wasn’t, and as Smith notes, it’s not nearly as fringe a party as one might think. We found out Todd Palin had a DUI back when Wham! was still together. We found out she flip-flopped on the bridge to nowhere, which would sting if not for the fact that she flip-flopped in the right direction and ended up torpedoing it. We found out she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla in the fine tradition of The One, who also claims to stand for “Change.” We found out she hopes God approves of what our soldiers are doing overseas. And as to the one big story that’s cooking, Troopergate, we found out nothing: She has a private lawyer now and the Democrat in charge of the investigation is trying hard to make Republicans panic, but like the Bristol Palin news, this is one thing McCain probably did vet thoroughly given the stakes.
So what’s the big smoking gun that’s going to get her Eagletoned to oblivion? Is the suggestion that something bigger’s coming down the pike? An Alaska libertarian who’s, um, high on Palin thinks there is, although it sounds less like a case of him having specific information than simply believing Alaskans are free spirits with embarrassing juvenile behavior in their closets. Exit question: Given all of her enemies among the state party establishment, how is it these various and sundry nefarious scandals haven’t already emerged?
Update: But since we’re talking about replacing people on the ticket…
Old, Grizzled Third-Party Candidate May Steal Support From McCain
Update: Tom Edsall begs Republicans — any Republican — at the convention to tell him McCain’s considering dumping Palin and the best he can do is this:
“Hell no! No hint of that! None! Nada,” declared Republican Pollster Whit Ayres. “All of the talk is exactly the other way,” he said, claiming to be stunned by a reporter’s inquiry. Palin, he said, “has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her.”
On the record and off the record, Republican strategists are putting up a nearly united front in a drive to quash public speculation that the growing controversies surrounding the Palin pick, and the growing body of evidence that only a superficial background check of the Alaska Governor was conducted, are forcing the McCain campaign to rethink its choice…
The Republican ‘Omerta’ strategy is, as one lonely GOP source noted to the Huffington Post, not credible. “Of course people talk about it [pulling Palin off the ticket] over a drink or at breakfast. Everyone agrees that it’s not in the cards now, but it’s crazy to tell you animals [reporters] that there is a total vacuum of thought.”
That note of realism does not, however, prevent the cadre of strategists and operatives here from toeing the line. “There has not been any talk that I’ve heard,” one well-connected player here contended. “Everyone is locking in on her.”

Excellent post, Allah. Putting everything in perspective always helps.
As to the Eagleton scenario, that more likely applies to Biden, who has never seemed able to control what comes spilling out of his mouth.

I have to say Allah, you are coming around with your optimistic analysis.
We haven’t given up on you, just yet…..
What I found amazing yesterday, is that you kept finding your own rebuttals and that even in the same blog time line!!
I don’t believe the Eagleton scenario comes even close to applying here because of the ground swell of support that is erupting across demographics.
The fund raising spike that McCain experienced over the weekend is for real.
And, is all the indication anyone needed to make the right judgment, in determining whether there is support for her.
In the Eagleton scenario, mind you, there was no ground swell support.
But I do have to say this, because of who was against her today and of who brought up the stupidest questions today - I’m talking non-liberal talk show hosts, nationally and locally – I made up my mind, that if I have to come home and listen to such crap from you… I would’ve completely lost all respect for you, no joke!!
But lucky for us all, you didn’t fail us.
Thanks, that’s all. Thanks.

Palin was a last minute pick and clearly not his first choice. The big donors talked him out of Liebs.

The good news is that the MSM is not as in capable of investigative reporting as their response to an Obama candidacy lead some to believe.
The bad news is that they still feel that reverence and worship are the most appropriate approach to a Democrat candidate.

Desperation has morphed into projection for the Dems.
And I love all this talk about ‘growing controversies.’
What ‘controversy’ has come out that has any real merit/substance?
Trig is Palin’s daughter’s baby? No.
Trig is Palin’s daughter’s baby and the father is Todd? No.
Sarah got on a plane while in labor with Trig? No.
Todd is a cuckolded and emasculated husband? No.
Sarah had a sense of humor in college and once wore a funny t-shirt? No.
Sarah is a secret Nazi-sympathizer because she once wore a Pat Buchanan button out of hospitality? No.
Sarah’s a bad mom because she didn’t physical restrain her daughter from having pre-marital sex (which I thought the left was all for?)? No.
Troopergate? No, not really.
The only “controversy” is that Sarah’s daughter got pregnant out of wedlock. And since she’s going to have the baby and marry the father (their own, unpressured decisions made before Sarah knew she would be the VP), it’s only caused the base to rally around her.
The only “growing controversy” is that the media are trying to MAKE a controversy out of nothing.

So far I see no systemic weaknesses in Palin’s public personna. The strongest attack the Dems have against her is to whine rather hysterically “She’s not perfect!”. They are so clueless.

tarpon on September 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Here’s why the left is pushing this trope of Sarah being dropped:
Sarah’s nomination has electrified and energize the base like nothing else in quite some time. (Now, we can discuss whether or not the SHOULD be energized over her, but that’s immaterial to the point).
The huge spike in donations bears this out.
Now, while some here have commented that nominated Sarah killed McCain’s chances, the truth is actually the opposite. If (When!) McCain wins it will be because of picking Sarah as a VP (and thus energizing his base).
Thus, if McCain somehow caved into the bottom-feeding mud-slinging and pulled Sarah, he wouldn’t just lose his base, he would ENRAGE them.
Thus, insuring the swearing in of President Obama.
Thus – dropping Sarah is the best hope that Dems have (at this time) of securing a victory in November.
THAT is why they are pushing this. Not because there is any chance of it happening, but because they desperately want/need it to happen.

There is no way in hell John McCain is going to even consider dropping Sara Palin from the ticket; now or ever. Whoever thinks this is a valid scenario is either desperate or smoking copious amounts of grass. Or both.
Prediction: If John McCain wins the presidency, Sara Palin will be the new target of hate from the left for the following 4 years. They’ll transfer their BDS into PDS. You can take it to the bank.

Now, to the question…why would McCain consider for a milli-second pulling an “Eagleton?”
I’d suspect that the Obama campaign office on Michigan Avenue has had a few discussions about pulling an “Eagleton” with regard to Biden, and would be entirely correct in doing so. Other than “he’s from Scranton” what exactly does he bring to the Obama ticket? Other than jumbled lounge-lizard seemingly-inebriated totally inappropriate comments?

Eagleton was dumped because they thought he was nuts — although getting shock treatments was the sanest thing he could have done for his disorder.
Furthermore, if the Eagleton nuttiness criteria for ticket dismissal was enforced, there would be no Democratic ticket. Obama exhibits signs of megalomania and Biden apparently suffers from Baron Munchausen’s problems of lying and exaggeration.
But that is not what’s happening here. Make no mistake. What is happening is the Thomas effect. Leftists believe people of color and women are their constituencies. The firestorm is because Palin, like Thomas, is viewed as an apostate. (She discredits the “White Man’s party” slur.) And since Leftists believe the ends justify the means (remember Stalin’s omelet comment), they will stop at nothing — and I mean nothing — to destroy her.

Hey dude, it’s because the Republican party doesn’t have a quota
(I’m sorry, goals) for their convention delegates.
Frankly, I find it the meanest form of identity politics, for it panders to the lowest common denominator – those that pay no or little attention to politics and party agendas. It also leaves the impression of “looking like America”, but it also papers over and reinforces the notion of ideological purity – you can look different, but you have to think the same.
Is that what drives you? Is that as far as you can think – skin deep? The Democrat party welcomes you. The Republican party urges you to look and think more critically.

The MSM is in the tank for Obama…spent a few minutes watching the RNC post-speech commentary on CNN and MSNBC. Actually, for most of the past few days I’ve been watching it, this MSM trying to do everything they can to either minimize or demonize Palin. I love it when these passive-agressive fools, most of whom couldn’t hold a candle to a McCain or a Palin, preface their remarks with “I don’t know if it is true or not, but I’ve heard Palin did a, b, c, and McCain never vetted her” and then go off on a tangent having nothing to do with the subject at hand getting their digs in for Obama and trying to present Palin as a total nobody, or worse.
Unfortunately, more than half of America gets their “news” from the MSM. So, these lies and the “I don’t know if it is true or not” comments take on a reality of their own.
These MSM propagandists would make Goebbels and Ilya Ehrenburg blush for their audacity.
And chuckle with glee in their graves for the effectiveness of it all.

In response to the comments about the Bridge to Nowhere…
I’ve been searching like mad for a thread that I think was at Protein Wisdom, but may have been at AoSHQ. One of the commenters, an Alaskan, wrote addressing several different Palin issues, on request, after demonstrating an uncommon grasp of the local politics.
I’ll try to sum it up as best as I remember, though I hope I can find the original to post here too. It was late, I was tired, et cetera.
The problem with the BtN was more complicated that For or Against, because of the history of earmarks in Alaska, which Palin had, in fact, run against. The previous (corrupt, remember?), administrations had traded away the usual forms of federal financing that states receive for transportation/highway financing in exchange for earmarks, which the Alaskans (and Palin) hated because it took away the power of the state (i.e. the people of Alaska) to decide how those funds were spent. The bridge itself wasn’t necessarily a bad idea – the small community on that island wanted a chance to grow larger – but the geographic logistics made it more complicated. Shipping traffic apparently required the bridge to be much higher than would be usual for a bridge of that size, which added a lot to the cost. It wasn’t anyone’s first, best choice, but it was all they had. When the topic became a hot potato, there was an opportunity for Palin to take the funds that would have been wasted on one bridge, and use the money according to the wishes of the Alaskan planners.
I hope I got that right, but that’s the best that I remember. One point that I’ve taken away from all of the discussion about Alaska is that the people living there have some good reasons to not feel guilty about getting some extra federal cash now and then, and have some say in how it’s spent. The feds have been doing guilt assuaging land grabs there for the last 40ish years. Every time some Washington politico wants to rail against environmental ravaging in the lower 48, they offer up another chunk of Alaska as another Wildlife Refuge, making it nearly impossible for the people there to use their resources as they see fit. For what it’s worth, I live in Michigan, and, as much as we love our wilderness areas, I think we’d be howling with rage if the feds tried to be as heavy handed here.
Ain’t gonna preview. It’s late. So, sorry if this comes out a bit raw.

If the media didn’t think Palin helped McCain’s chances, they would simply condescend to her, or ignore her. The obvious end result they’re looking for here is Palin out of the race, which would free McCain to pick anybody else on Earth. So, we can consult our Ann Coulter Political Guide and ask the question: What can we learn from this?

Gov. Palin isn’t going anywhere. Obama Spokesman Keith Overbite doesn’t support it yet and tonight he made sure to clarify the campaign position on each charge that came up with the round table tonight, i.e. Obama and abortion, and a couple of cute comments on Fred’s cough as well as Gov. Palin’s sportcasting. “Something I know about.” That and the fact that all the Obama camp saw from tonights speeches were putting McCain next to a flag with a gun. Good thing his boyfriend Mr. Maddow was there to cover his absence on the panel….
Someone tell the press that John McCain picked Sarah because he had a vision from God on Thursday and that Jesus himself vetted her – so we can watch every talking head in the MSM explode and be done with it.

Why is the Eagleton meme appearing everywhere? I thought you would’ve figured out by now. That’s how the Obama campaign works. I know we all dislike Hillary here but you should read the things her supporters say about Obama. If anything, Hillary supporters come to me as the sanest of all.
The MSM( with the benediction of the Obama campaign) have directed everything they have to get Palin off the ticket. How desperate is that. The feversihness that accompanied these so called “scandals” is truly the giveaway. They want to scare McCain and the Repubs but the good news is, they have very little and what they have they have used up in a very short time.

By the way, I am hearing a lot about this Lyda Green woman. Can’t the Republican Party put a choke on her or something. I hear she is a Republican.
promachus on September 3, 2008 at 4:36 AM
Giuliani knocked this one out of the park last night on Fox. I’ll take her husbands DUI when he was 20 and raise you Barack Obama’s snorting coke at the same age and around the same time.
Run the ad, McCain.

Nah, let her talk. She comes across about as well as Biden giving a speech about respecting the Indian culture at 7-11, after 20 beers and a brain aneurysm.
She’s more proof of Palin’s ability to deal with morons in her own party.
Damiano on September 3, 2008 at 4:55 AM
If McCain drops her, he better pick Fred Thompson or he won’t stand a chance this election.

Blogger surprisingly optimistic!
Don’t go wobbly on me now, George.
JiangxiDad on September 3, 2008 at 7:13 AM
I think that would be his only hope. But seriously, the media is desperate and trying to gin up nervousness by constantly repeating this meme. Gee, I sort of remember someone in history saying something about repetition.
aikidoka on September 3, 2008 at 7:51 AM
And that not only applies to the Eagleton thing, but to Barry’s entire Woodstock redux campaign.
JiangxiDad on September 3, 2008 at 7:55 AM
Isn’t it funny how the Eagleton drumbeat just spontaneously commences.
No, it’s not funny.
It’s hysterical, in both senses of the word.
silverfox on September 3, 2008 at 7:55 AM
So our resident Russian Novelist(plug) is now optimistic. Did it really take you this long to realize these attacks stem from desperation bordering on obvious insanity?
I’m sure there will be more TERRIBLE REVELATIONS THAT DISQUALIFY PALIN FROM ANY OFFICE – NAY – FROM LIFE ITSELF coming soon. When they come, perhaps you should try breathing into a paper bag instead of hyperventilating out a post at HA.
Random Numbers (Brian Epps) on September 3, 2008 at 7:56 AM
There is NO WAY she even THINKS about dropping out. And McCain wouldn’t throw her under the bus in a zillion years. What’re you guys sticking up your noses? Drop out because her daughter had premarital sex?!? Pinch me — what year is this?
I haven’t read the whole thread, so I don’t know if anyone bothered to explain who the frack Eagleton was, but Wikipedia has a pretty bland biography.

They’re stuck with a lot of unsold Barry dolls, and the fashions have changed.

I still think this is another sign that the democratic party is afraid of strong women.
This includes all those female lefty journalists which obviously got their jobs because of affirmative action.

i think the MSM and the DailyKos kids are the ones that need an “Eagleton”. A couple shock therapy sessions might bring out some intelligence and/or common decency.
momof2 on September 3, 2008 at 8:53 AM
Oh my God, did he really say that? Is that on youtube?
