Source at TNR: Underestimate Palin at your peril

posted at 1:41 pm on September 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

I’m going to interrupt my breathing into a paper bag about the Blotter’s Troopergate story — the only source for which is a Democrat, do note — to bring you this rare shot of optimism, just because it’s the third instance I’ve heard something like this in the past 24 hours. KP, an Alaska native, tells me via e-mail that the word back home is she’s a “phenomenal politician … [who] just blows people away and tunes out the media and criticism.” That jibes with this too-good-to-check Bill Kristol anecdote about Palin all but laughing at McCain staffers fretting that she can’t stand up to media scrutiny. And now here’s another Alaska source warning TNR that the left shouldn’t invest too heavily in its fantasies of reducing her to a blubbering puddle. The Democrats, ironically, seem to have bought into the “ordinary gal” image even more totally than the right has; they’re actually starting pools about when she’ll finally wilt under the pressure and beg off the ticket. Put me down for “never”:

She’s just a small town mayor, just a hockey mom, just a beauty pageant queen. Palin has never shunned these belittling monikers, in part, I imagine, because the camouflage has served her so well. Soothed by the litany, her opponents tend to sleep too late, sneer too much, and forget who it is that hires them.

Watching Palin operate over the past few years has been like witnessing a dramatic reading of All the King’s Men

What the Republicans missed about Sarah Palin then–and what the Democrats seem poised to miss now–is that she is a true political savant; a candidate with a knack for identifying the key gripes of the populace and packaging herself as the solution. That keen political nose has enabled her to routinely outperform her resume. Nearly two years into her administration, she still racks up approval ratings of 80 per cent or better…

[I]n probing this candidate, it would behoove the Democrats and the pundits to shed the notion that they are dealing with some dimwitted bumpkin (Dan Quayle seems to come up a lot lately) who’s going to start crying when they ask her to name the president of Azerbaijan; or that Palin is the townie who was brought into the Skull & Bones initiation night for the amusement of all; or that somehow the prom queen ballots got mixed up with the Alaska gubernatorial poll. Trivialize her at your own peril.

Sarah Palin is a living reminder that the ultimate source of political power in this country is not the Kennedy School or the Davos Summit or an Ariana Huffington salon; even now, power emanates from the electorate itself. More precisely, power in 2008 emanates from the working class electorates of Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Don’t believe him? Read through this indispensable Time magazine story, dateline Wasilla, for a description of the sort of hardball Mayor Palin used to play. The hockey mom evidently knows how to use social issues to her advantage. Exit question about the Troopergate story: What’s the Democrat in charge of the investigation doing leaking about what it’s “likely” to conclude? If they’ve finished gathering their facts, go ahead and put out the report. If they haven’t, then how can he conclude what’s likely? And, follow-up question: Assuming for the sake of argument that McCain didn’t vet her down to the atomic level, surely the Troopergate thing at least was thoroughly vetted, no? It’s set to drop on October 31 and has the potential to finish him if it’s damaging. That would be the one thing, I think, they have a foot-thick binder of information on.

Blowback

Who would have thought the choice of Palin would make me like KP more? But it has, she’s been great (and leveling).

Former mayor? If you’re going to skip over her job as governor and, before that, her job heading the commission that oversees production of the largest petroleum reserves in America, why not “former high school student”?

That’s what I thought when I read it. This guy is just salivating at the chance to cause trouble. Personally, I think it’s mostly bluster since the investigation is ongoing, but I’m wondering if he hurt himself or the integrity of the investigation with that interview.

She’ll do exactly what Reagan did: Look straight into the camera and talk to the American people who can relate to her. The more they hammer her unfairly the greater the damage they do to themselves. They are going to piss off every white working class mother in this country by the time this is all over.

I suspect the VP debate will be interesting. I think she’ll open a large incision down the midline of Biden’s abdomen, grab his intestines and start pulling.

By contrast, Biden will be likely arrogant as hell and runs the risk of veering into the thickets of condescension, exaggeration and long windedness. The more frustrated he becomes the meaner he becomes.

Should be a popcorn night.

I remember way on back in the 70′s when a World Hockey Association phenom was starting to get some real attention, and a lot of the big, bad National Hockey League studs said “Let him join our league and we’ll see just how big a hot shot he really is.” Wayne Gretzky went on to rewrite the record books in a way that no major sport has ever seen. I’d love to see Sarah Palin in a number 99 jersey.

Patrick S on September 2, 2008 at 1:53 PM

It’s hard to keep from ascribing my own hopes onto her – I don’t want to be guilty of what I laugh at Obamatards for – but I think she’s got the mettle to handle this fine.

Just like some people get shot in the arm or leg and freak out and die from a non-life-threatening wound, while others suffer grievous injuries and just get pissed and fight all the harder. I think Sarah’cuda is the type to wipe the blood off her lip and say “If that’s the best you got, then this is gonna be easy…”

The comments at the blog taking bets are interesting:

Because even if Palin has far right views – she is REAL. And there is a HUGE shortage of real in politics today.
And she has accomplished things, she has a lovely family – especially with the problems (because every family has problems), and she is strong.

and all of the attacks on her and her family by the left are going to backfire. I am a liberal Dem and I am astonished that anyone is playing the experience card

It seems to be the same baseless sexism and hatred that they gave to Hillary. So here I am, thinking Sarah is a great gal!

Watch out folks! They’re really “poking the bear” with all these attacks on Palin. And by “the bear” I mean normal people – especially women – who represent the bulk of the voters in this country.

The Dem in question did Palin and the GOP an enormous favor, as this story can be hauled out to preemptively dismiss the report as a last-ditch partisan hack job. And to dismiss him as someone apparently unethical enough to leak things about an ongoing investigation to the press, not to mention too dumb to do it anonymously. Hard to have an October Surprise when you publicly announce it in September.

French is talking schmack now that the national spotlight has “made” him something for a brief, fleeting moment. UP TO THIS POINT ~ judging by a yet-to-be-vandalized Palin Wiki entry, Mr. French was quite happy with the governor and her office’s co-operation…

In response to Palin’s statement that she had nothing to hide, in August 2008 the Alaska Legislature hired Steve Branchflower to investigate Palin and her staff for possible abuse of power surrounding the dismissal, though lawmakers acknowledge that “Monegan and other commissioners serve at will, meaning they can be fired by Palin at any time.”[49] The investigation is being overseen by Democratic State Senator Hollis French, who says that the Palin administration has been cooperating and thus subpoenas are unnecessary.[50] The Palin administration itself was the first to release an audiotape of Bailey making inquiries about the status of the Wooten investigation.[48][51]

Here’s a barracuda story. I was fishing offshore at a wreck with a free-line drifting off the back of the boat, a bottom rig down for grouper and a snapper rig in my hand trying to get some stuff for my freezer. A number of barracuda arrived to eat the snapper I was trying to get past them. Frustrated with the experience, I put on a steel leader and put the head of a snapper on the hook and went for the ‘cudas. They all kept a reasonable distance until one made a pass and cut my line ABOVE the steel leader. Okay, they win. I’m going somewhere else. As I pulled in the other two lines, they were each also cut off well above the leader.

Moral to the story… if there’s a barracuda in the water, don’t even bother dropping a hook.

Two reasons. One: For practical reasons she needs to bone up on the foreign policy playbook to avoid the stupid kinds of gotcha questions the press will surely throw at her. Two: It builds the public excitement towards her VP speech, meaning it should get much higher viewership than if she was giving daily interviews. Risky, but with a much higher payoff if her speech is good.

Is it just me, or does it seem suspicious that the timing of the report’s release is scheduled for the Friday before election day? Do that and the whole thing is over all the websites and TV shows until Monday, at which point any response, no matter how correct, will be completely irrelevant, as people’s opinions on the subject will have cemented. Much like the “Bush had a DUI!” story back in 2000, this story’s release will be timed to exact maximum political damage. If it turns out that it’s all crap AFTER the Chosen One wins the election, there will some tut-tutting about baseless accusations and then the whole thing will get swept under the rug. Until the next election.

Another October Surprise. I wonder if it will have as much truth- or existence, for that matter- as the one back in 1992.

My bet: Biden will be first to blush.

I wouldn’t underestimate her as I don’t know for sure what she’s capable of, but if she’s so skilled why has she been so camera shy since the announcement?

Typhonsentra on September 2, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Go here if you want to see what she’s been doing for some of the last three days. The rest of her time so far has been visiting the south for storm relief efforts. Gustav threw off the Sarah launch pretty badly. The McCain campaign put the kabosh on political speech the day the storm made landfall.

Is the State Legislature controlled by GOP?

BOR keeps yapping that Palin can take no more hits. I don’t know why he is saying this. I think he is trying to do his fake nonpartisan junk to get ratings.

I suppose he’s not going to take her seriously until she does “Factor”. He’s starting an Obama-clock or something stupid on the show. He’ll probably treat her the same; he tends to want to jump on the big thing-of-the-moment and say they aren’t all-that until they do his show. Tiresome.

Marcus on September 2, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Palin is nearly identical in appearance to my last Air Force boss–a Chief Master Sergeant and mother of four. My old boss is also a Republican and a born-again Christian (as is my afore-mentioned sister). I know quite a few women like this and such women are mentally and emotionally a breed apart.

Someone up thread mentioned the ripping-your-heart out metaphor. Too apt. I’d say that she’d probably rip your heart out, roast it and serve it to you with a salad made from ingredients out of her garden.

These Lefties are used to their own emotional jelly-fish women.

they’re actually starting pools about when she’ll finally wilt under the pressure and beg off the ticket.

Who’s starting the pool for when Biden will step aside and make way for Hillary?!

Reread your post, and although any could get you fired I think the two you mentioned are at least suspendable (which is what I call them).

Clarification, even if irrelevant.

Ahhh, remember the good old days when the biggest campaign news was that McCain didn’t know how many houses his wife’s trust fund held?

There is going to be a flood of unsubstantiated rumors, gossip, and lies all the way to the election and beyond. The polls suggest the bulk of the voters are taking a wait and see approach. At some point people will draw their conclusions and will get fed up with the media and the slimepits they grow out of.

The Democrats are veering close to sexism and attacking the working class.

Keeping it classy.

moxie_neanderthal on September 2, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Palin won’t do many press avails. Barack Obama hasn’t done one in weeks and nobody cares. McCain hasn’t had one in weeks either. The press are useless hamsters in this election. Both campaigns have pretty much trained them to report whatever they hand them in a news release. They would not dare complain about Palin since they have been on their knees to Obama for months despite the lack of access.

Palin’s going to give a knock-your-socks-off speech at the convention and then hit the campaign trail. Probably with a Barbara Walters-type interview or two thrown in. She’ll spend a lot of time studying for the debate with Biden. She’s here to provide the red meat for the base and get the crowds to the rallies.

rockmom on September 2, 2008 at 2:19 PM

Who’s starting the pool for when Biden will step aside and make way for Hillary?!

The VP debates are in October. If in 2-3 weeks the Obama numbers go south look for Katherine Sebelius to take Biden’s place, not Hillary. That’s who I read he wanted all the time, but in the end was told “no” (you flopped in Berlin).

Marcus on September 2, 2008 at 2:19 PM

What’s the Democrat in charge of the investigation doing leaking about what it’s “likely” to conclude? If they’ve finished gathering their facts, go ahead and put out the report. If they haven’t, then how can he conclude what’s likely?

That’s what I thought when I read it. This guy is just salivating at the chance to cause trouble. Personally, I think it’s mostly bluster since the investigation is ongoing, but I’m wondering if he hurt himself or the integrity of the investigation with that interview.

Slublog on September 2, 2008 at 1:49 PM

I could just be cautiously optimistic here, but I’ve got the sneaking suspicion that there is no smoking gun here regarding “Troopergate” and Palin, and this Dem knows it. Which leaves him only with plan B: talk a lot of vague trash about how the report MIGHT be bad for Palin, without offering specifics, in the hopes that Americans will become suspicious that there’s something negative there, even though there are no facts to support that.

It’s typical liberal BS these days – when there’s nothing really nefarious going on with your opponent, just INSINUATE like there is and hope that people’s imaginations run wild.
