Source at TNR: Underestimate Palin at your peril

I’m going to interrupt my breathing into a paper bag about the Blotter’s Troopergate story — the only source for which is a Democrat, do note — to bring you this rare shot of optimism, just because it’s the third instance I’ve heard something like this in the past 24 hours. KP, an Alaska native, tells me via e-mail that the word back home is she’s a “phenomenal politician … [who] just blows people away and tunes out the media and criticism.” That jibes with this too-good-to-check Bill Kristol anecdote about Palin all but laughing at McCain staffers fretting that she can’t stand up to media scrutiny. And now here’s another Alaska source warning TNR that the left shouldn’t invest too heavily in its fantasies of reducing her to a blubbering puddle. The Democrats, ironically, seem to have bought into the “ordinary gal” image even more totally than the right has; they’re actually starting pools about when she’ll finally wilt under the pressure and beg off the ticket. Put me down for “never”:
She’s just a small town mayor, just a hockey mom, just a beauty pageant queen. Palin has never shunned these belittling monikers, in part, I imagine, because the camouflage has served her so well. Soothed by the litany, her opponents tend to sleep too late, sneer too much, and forget who it is that hires them.
Watching Palin operate over the past few years has been like witnessing a dramatic reading of All the King’s Men…
What the Republicans missed about Sarah Palin then–and what the Democrats seem poised to miss now–is that she is a true political savant; a candidate with a knack for identifying the key gripes of the populace and packaging herself as the solution. That keen political nose has enabled her to routinely outperform her resume. Nearly two years into her administration, she still racks up approval ratings of 80 per cent or better…
[I]n probing this candidate, it would behoove the Democrats and the pundits to shed the notion that they are dealing with some dimwitted bumpkin (Dan Quayle seems to come up a lot lately) who’s going to start crying when they ask her to name the president of Azerbaijan; or that Palin is the townie who was brought into the Skull & Bones initiation night for the amusement of all; or that somehow the prom queen ballots got mixed up with the Alaska gubernatorial poll. Trivialize her at your own peril.
Sarah Palin is a living reminder that the ultimate source of political power in this country is not the Kennedy School or the Davos Summit or an Ariana Huffington salon; even now, power emanates from the electorate itself. More precisely, power in 2008 emanates from the working class electorates of Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Don’t believe him? Read through this indispensable Time magazine story, dateline Wasilla, for a description of the sort of hardball Mayor Palin used to play. The hockey mom evidently knows how to use social issues to her advantage. Exit question about the Troopergate story: What’s the Democrat in charge of the investigation doing leaking about what it’s “likely” to conclude? If they’ve finished gathering their facts, go ahead and put out the report. If they haven’t, then how can he conclude what’s likely? And, follow-up question: Assuming for the sake of argument that McCain didn’t vet her down to the atomic level, surely the Troopergate thing at least was thoroughly vetted, no? It’s set to drop on October 31 and has the potential to finish him if it’s damaging. That would be the one thing, I think, they have a foot-thick binder of information on.

That’s the whole freakin’ point. It IS another October Surprise.
I mean, c’mon. Duh, he’s a Democrat. (I haven’t been a voting Republican for 21 years for nuthin’. You kinda begin to notice patterns.)

Two weeks from now: McCain? Who’s he? Oh yeah, he’s the guy that chose Sarah Palin as his running mate. It’s a shame she has to lug him around as baggage on her campaign.

This is great, after all the bashing Hillary took from her very own media and now the liberals attack Sarah Palin is going to bite them with some Hillary supporters.

I heard Biden’s new nickname is ‘moose’.
Said someone named ‘Sarah’ was heard calling him that…
I wonder if she’ll be able to get him to actually scream the epithets at the debate?
KCSteve on September 2, 2008 at 2:22 PM
Here’s a prediction for you: Her speech Wednesday night outdraws Obama On The Mount.
I’d have to assume that the McCain camp knew the Left/MSM would unload on her, and what better strategy then to let them shoot their entire wads, buildup the suspense and her crowd, then give her her chance to rip them to pieces.
I wouldn’t want her taking one bit of that audience away by speaking to any of this until then.

“Barracuda” – Heart
So this ain’t the end
I saw you again
Today
I had to turn my heart away
Smile like the sun
Kisses for everyone
And tales
It never fails
You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you gonna ambush me
You’d have me down, down, down, down on my knees
Now wouldn’t you?
Barracuda
Back over time
We were all trying
For free
You met the porpoise with me
Uh huh
No right, no wrong
Selling a song
A name
Whisper game
And if the real thing don’t do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it out to the wick
Ooh, Barracuda
‘Sell me, sell you’ the porpoise said
Dive down deep now save my head
You
I think you got the blues too
All that night and all the next
Swam without looking back
Made for the western pools
Silly, silly fools
The real thing don’t do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it out to the wick
Ohh, Barracuda
Ooh, hey

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 2, 2008 at 2:30 PM
The left and the media are doing a great job of lowering expectations for Palin. The more they characterize her as an air-headed beauty queen, the less she’ll actually have to do rise above such infantile wishful thinking. Keep it up, guys! When she duels Biden to a draw (at least) she’ll be seen as the runaway winner. This is a high-stakes gamble by the left, because the only way they win is if Palin goes Dan Quayle over the next 60 days, and her history suggests that that isn’t likely to happen.
holygoat on September 2, 2008 at 2:32 PM
Sarah Palin does not sleep. Each moose she kills reinvigorates her through the next hunt.

logis on September 2, 2008 at 2:34 PM
I worry a lot more about McCain than Palin. Judging from what I’ve seen of Palin so far I’m convinced she has great substance, she’s not going to fade away like the liberals hope. She is confident but not over confident and she speaks with conviction. She believes what she says and is not sidelined by questions framed to undermine her position.
I think all the media attacks on Palin’s “inexperience” are going to be exactly as effective as the media’s attacks on Bush’s intelligence. Yeah, dumb old Bush, he’s outmaneuvered the left at every turn.
Maxx on September 2, 2008 at 2:34 PM
On this ‘Troopergate’ thing:
If SP had just allowed this rat cop to stay part of the force without any argument whatsoever she’d now stand accused of cronyism and the left would be shouting from the rooftops about how the guy tazered a child and Sarah stood by watching, doing nothing about it.
There’s no winning with the highly hypocritical left.

Any truth to the rumor that the writers of “24″ rejected Sarah Palin as being to tough for the series? Jack Bauer couldn’t stand up to her! That’s what I heard…
UkiddenMe on September 2, 2008 at 2:36 PM
Won’t happen. By then, all of the thunder will be gone. Not only that, but if Barry were to do such a thing, he would tick off his feminist constituency so badly that it may well
force them into not voting- after all, why didn’t he do that in the first place, and why not with Hillary? They woudn’t vote for a Republican ticket out of principle, but you can bleeding well bet they would make him pay for an out-and-out insult. Even if you discount all that, by the time Barry decided he had buyers remorse, it would be too late- nowhere near enough time to get Selibus up and running. She’ll wind up looking quite stupid through no fault of her own. Naw- Barry had better play the hand he dealt himself, and hope it doesn’t come up 2’s and 3’s.

Desperate Housewives; Commander in Chief; The Sarah Conner Chronicles… And I’m sure I’m missing a bunch more.
The liberal media have paved the way. Everyone who supports both parties, along with millions of people who don’t know how to SPELL “politics” will be tuned in and sitting on the edges of their seats.
I don’t think it’s reasonable to compare Sarah’s celebrity (good and bad) to a mere God-among-mortals. Poor Barack doesn’t have a prayer.
A more fair comparison would be with the recent Olympic coverage. Probably not worldwide, but at least in America – my money’s on Sarah.

ALLAH. RELAX. I just got done talking to my boss, who is a moderate thinker-type, and he said he didn’t notice any news about Palin’s daughter until this morning. He was busy with family all weekend.
I think you are overestimating, due to your bloggyness, the typical American citizen’s level of political appetite on the FIRST MAJOR FOOTBALL WEEKEND of the year. And a three-day weekend to boot.
I don’t think most Americans caught much of this. We interwebz addicts are not the norm. And come on, who watches CNN anyway?
Everybody relax. The convention will go as planned, and people will say, “What scandal? I hadn’t heard anything! Oh, well, so what?”

The people putting any faith in the polls are going to be sorely disappointed. “The Bradley Effect” applies fully to these polls. Polls aren’t secret ballots, they are an open expression of what you intend to do. There is absolutely no way to get anything approaching an accurate poll of this election until November on election day. Senator Obama will be the first liberal to lose 50 of 50.

When she spoke Friday she said, “Americans come join our cause” and “We are asking for your vote on Nov 4″
I told my husband she was the first of those now on the tickets to do that this season.
She is going to end up more popular than Obama, Biden and McCain in no time.
Elizabetty on September 2, 2008 at 3:50 PM
I stand by my opinion of the pick. I think it is a mistake and will hurt the Republican chances in November, even though it will generate a lot of yapping in the short term.
The bottom line is that she would be a heartbeat away from being the POTUS, and she is surely not the most qualified Republican person in the country to be president.
I like her, but not for this spot.

Let’s hope her speech tomorrow night is DYN-NO-MYTE…!
J_Gocht on September 2, 2008 at 4:29 PM
Excellent point. It’s a lose/ lose for him… if anyone would actually report it as such. The American Idol/ Jerry Springer crowd are not known for their ability to think for themselves.
- If he wins the argument, he has successfully proven that he is more qualified than a person that his party has relegated a “hockey mom” to be VP.., to say nothing about President.
vs.
- If he loses the argument, he proves that he is not even qualified to be VP… much less President
Rove, you glorious bastard…
Damiano on September 2, 2008 at 4:53 PM
You’re probably right about her qualifications not being the best for being President in case something terrible happened to the real President…. she’s just the 2nd best choice of the four people now available to vote for.
CapedConservative on September 2, 2008 at 4:56 PM
Like I tell all my real world contacts…..NEVER believe the MSM… They have been slanting the truth since the invention of the newspaper. The problem is that most conservatives are decent people that when somebody says something bad won’t shout them down or contradict them. You start talking to the average American one on one and quiet….guess what, Bush is popular, we have won the war in Iraq, God is acceptable in conversation and in schools, and abortion should be stopped.
So when a poll says that Obama and whatziz are at 50%….yeah right, maybe on the top floor of the NY Tass…but not in real America.
Besides I have never believed in poll results….they ask in a way that will get them the answer they want…..nature of the beast.

No Democrat was going to enjoy her but wait until the non-partisans see the GOP EXCITED about her and get to meet her and know her. The Democrats will have underestimated her. Never in my life have I seen so much importance placed on a VP pick.
October surprise!?! Huh? Don’t you think the rest of the country that’s not paying attention like the political fanatics will get tired of this stuff?
