Palin goes on offense in Troopergate, releases affidavit

Everyone knew it was coming but I thought they’d wait longer to do it. Presumably they decided to take advantage of the raging river of information and push it out now rather than wait until things quiet down, when the media can focus all of its attention on it. Here’s the PDF. The recitation of facts is only around 10 pages; pay special attention to the short section on the Bailey phone call, which is where she’s most likely to have problems. This is, ostensibly, a legal document written for ethics investigators, but the true aim of course is to put the public on notice about her former brother-in-law’s “eccentricities” so that if she’s found guilty of crossing an ethical line she can claim she acted the way any good daughter or sister would when family’s threatened. The defense, in other words, will be that she’s morally right even if she’s ethically wrong.

Not the actions of a woman ready to pull an Eagleton, needless to say.

Yeah! That’s my girl! I can’t wait for tomorrow night’s speech. If it’s like Fred’s tonight, I’m going to be giddy.

Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 10:44 PM

I am really glad they are getting ahead of this. This seems to me to be the only real possible speed bump, so for them to get out front and set the story – that’s good news.

After the trooper-in-law threatened her father and tased her nephew, the governor had to wonder when he was going to come after her. That’s my reading of the situation and would explain the First Dude’s involvement.

Terrie on September 2, 2008 at 10:49 PM

I will say it now; Sarah is as tough as any man in Washington. She will be just fine.

Rovin on September 2, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Fred nailed that speech. And with “Troopergate” I’m not sure what they’re going to use to attack Palin. All I needed to hear is what the guy did and I suddenly didn’t care what kind of pressure she put on anyone to fire him. I have to think that it’ll be similar with most voters. I mean the guy tasered his step-son, drank while on the job, and threatened to kill his wife’s father and they want us to be outraged over her trying to get this guy fired?

I frankly would be less likely to vote for her if she DIDN’T try to get him fired.

Kronos on September 2, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Just wait until tomorrow and when she debates Biden (as in she’ll still be the VP nominee wobbly-ones).

Haunchie on September 2, 2008 at 10:52 PM

The defense, in other words, will be that she’s morally right even if she’s ethically wrong.

Wait, did we read the same document? She has expressly denied any wrongdoing and expressly denied firing anyone over Wooten. What she said is that Bailey did not act with her approval or authority — a statement Bailey himself supports. By the way, contrary to your title, Allah, that document is not Palin’s affidavit.

I maintain: the BIGGEST thing Palin needs to do right now is to be 100% honest about everything, even if it makes her look a little bad. In political investigations, the coverup — or even innocuous actions that look like a coverup (see Scooter Libby) — is worse than the crime. They are looking for Palin to trip up and fail to mention something, or cover something up, or change a story, or SOMETHING. She needs to treat lightly here, and I’m glad she’s hired counsel. I hope she’s got a great white collar legal team working for her on this.

I give props to HotAir, I was informed on Palin here, but I did my own homework. Integrity jumped out at me about Palin. I’ll take integrity over experience every time. You can count on someone who chooses to do the right thing over someone who is “politically” experienced.

I liked her 10 minutes into my research and like her more with every new thing I learn about her. Doing the politically expediant is easy… doing something else is doing something else entirely.

Like i said before, no one, and i mean no one (sane that is. leaving out 90% of Kos commentators) will blame her for (supposedly) pressuring for the firing of a guy who TASED his own stepson and threatened to kill his father-in-law (Palin’s father).

Offtopic, I just heard that her entire family including the boyfriend will be joining her onstage tomorrow after she’s done speaking. Um, I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. I think it’s better for her to meet them offstage or something(with the media around). Putting her family up there might bring up thoughts of her not being able to be devoted to her job. The bristol situation will add a little elmer gantryish factor to it too.

The McCain campaign has to be very, very aggressive. Liberal commenters are adding notes to every story that’s written stating false information that Sarah Palin is a secessionist. The “Big Lie” theory of warfare seems to be their purpose. They want to smear Gov. Palin so that lies will sail around for people that aren’t well-informed to believe. It’s like all the crazy rumors that floated around about Obama being a non-citizen or a secretly hostile Muslim. These left-wing loons literally don’t care that it’s all lies.

For our party’s sake I hope she is telling the truth, because as the famous saying goes, “It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up”. I would support her whole-heartedly in this matter for firing the guy who wouldn’t fire the jerk of a brother-in-law, but since she claims she didn’t fire him for that reason, the fact that her brother-in-law is a jerk won’t matter if it turns out she was lying.

Speaking of going on the offense, I love this:

ST. PAUL — Levi Johnston, the boyfriend of the pregnant 17-year-old Bristol Palin, plans to join the family at the Republican Party’s nomination here of mom and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for vice president.

The 18-year-old father-, husband- and celebrity-to-be left Alaska this morning to join the Palin family at the convention, according to his mother. Gov. Palin’s speech is scheduled for Wednesday.

Buy Danish on September 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM

Re: ninjapirate 10:59pm

If the boyfriend was instead Bristol’s *husband*, I’d have no problem with them all being onstage, but since he is *not* married to the pregnant daughter, having him up there is shoving the whole thing down our throats. I’d say Palin is trusting a little too much on Evangelical support if she does that.

Aslans Girl on September 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM

ninjapirate on September 2, 2008 at 11:13 PM

I believe the support will be a direct response to the non-stop attack the MSM, Democrats, and Left have attacked Sarah Palin and HER FAMILY since her nomination….

Trust me, the American people are sick of it, and with the New Media, we have a voice that will not be silenced.

The next slogan for this convention will be……. BACKLASH!!!!

Seven Percent Solution on September 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM

The defense, in other words, will be that she’s morally right even if she’s ethically wrong.

Mmm. The more I think about this, the less “ethically wrong” she would have been even if she did try to apply pressure. The ex is a dangerous man regardless of who he used to be married to, and, at a minimum, should have been fired. It would have been wrong not to ask why the guy wasn’t gone. That Monagan didn’t get rid of him IS, in a fair world, a stain on Monagan’s reputation, not Palin’s.

What Governor Palin is doing is smart — really, the only thing to do, since the MSM seems adamant not to report the details of the ex brother-in-law, or any mitigating specifics for that matter, just the accusation. From what Ace of Spades said about it, the special investigator (Branchwater?) is no friend to the Palins. I saw him on Youtube on a very biased news report calling for everyone in Alaska to call his office if they had information. What a circus the man is trying to create! I also “question the timing,” as his report is supposed to come out a few days before the election — exactly too late to counter it.

Aardvark on September 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM

” Edwards’ fiasco?”
i think it was so pathetic it didn’t get a name, tho perhaps “babygate” was floated …

/note the lll media deliberately picked troopergate to deflect form the ORIGINAL troopergate — y’know, where it was documented that billy jeff utilized state troopers to bring in the booty calls, etc. …

Buckaroo on September 2, 2008 at 11:21 PM

Don’t you find it rather odd that the same people that view water boarding as torture and have condemned the Bush Administration for its use on 3 occasions, seem to have no problem with a law enforcement officer using a taser on a 10 year old boy? In addition to quotes from Monegan, given to ADN, these few quotes seem like case closed to me:

Monegan himself has said that no one in the Palin administration told him to fire Wooten.

Monegan has stated that no one asked for Wooten to be fired.

Baily has acknowledged under oath that he acted on his own initiative.

Walt Monegan has not filed an Ethics Disclosure Form with the attorney general, suggesting that he personally does not believe that he has ever been faced with a matter that violates the Alaska ethics laws. State employees are required to report ethics violations.

I certainly hope so. When she says things like “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull?”

.. “Lipstick.” I feel better.

But I also know democrats. And I know how they have 60 days to plan her destruction. And her career, her reputation and her family are all at stake, and targets. All it takes is for one person to come forward like Anita Hill and with the help of the press and the democrats who want Obama towin, Mccain to lose, and Palin to be taken down, they will try. And she seems to be a good woman. And this is a good family. And I don’t want to despise the democrats any more that I do right now.

It is a family moment. The two of the are engaged. I don’t see a problem with them being on stage together, IF THE FAMILY WANTS IT. And apparently they do.

(Actually, it might help this young couple to sustain their future wedding. Because if that boy ever does her wrong, his face will have been plastered all across America’s living rooms.)

Now if only we can get rid of the Nat’l Enquirer and their crap, we’ll be in good shape.

“…I am not afraid of the media. BRING.IT.ON.”

OMG, if she did that, McCain would be lucky if the country didn’t demand that the ticket be reversed, with her as Pres!

I wonder if any politician, and especially McCain, can really appreciate the depth to which the media is despised and loathed by real Americans, after their dastardly behavior over the last 8 years? Turn the Sarahcuda loose!

I don’t think they have any idea. I wasn’t surprised when he said he was surprised by the amount of enthusiasm.

Comeback from where? The media is so hysterical, that I think it is catching. This lady is quite capable of taking care of herself. I am sure that if she thought there was anything to all this, she would not be where she is right now. It only puts her under more scrutiny and pressure.

If the boyfriend was instead Bristol’s *husband*, I’d have no problem with them all being onstage, but since he is *not* married to the pregnant daughter, having him up there is shoving the whole thing down our throats. I’d say Palin is trusting a little too much on Evangelical support if she does that.

What if there is a wedding in the morning? Would that make everything OK for you?

The interesting thing here is that (and I have no absolute proof, but my belief after watching as much as I can) Sarah Palin had no presidential ambition. That cant be said for Obama, and Biden and McCain. I think that the people who try too hard for this or anything else, might not be the best person for the job. Example, Huckabee tries too hard. Hillary tries too hard. Everything they do, every step they take is all for the single purpose of being elected the president.

And it took McCain to win the primary and then pick Palin. How wonderful would it be that if McCain and Palin win, Palin gets a lot of experience and then we can at some time get to vote for her when she’s ready. I can think of few people who deserve to be the president. For the right reasons. If McCain didn’t pick her, I don’t think she would be so egotistic to seek it out on her own. But the few days of learning about her, and seeing the democrats attack her and her family, it’s nice to have optimism for the future.

Thanks for that link. Unbelievable!

“We are being bombarded by e-mails and phone calls from journalists asking when she will be dropping out of the race,” Schmidt said.

There are SMART people running this campaign, and they’re quick and tough.

Campaigns ( smart tough campaigns ) win elections

Period; no question mark……

Ask Bush I, or Reagan 1980, or Bush II 2004, or Nixon 1968

Nixon had to wrestle die-hard Democrats as well as Wallace in the South in 1968, and toughed it out while outsmarting HHH and Wallace

Reagan 1980 won New York and New Joysey, and 42 other states, even with a Republican renegade taking five percent of the national vote

The McCain campaign in the past month has been nearly flawless: as fast and persistent as the Obamites, and smarter
