Obama’s answer on experience: But I’m such a great campaigner! Update: McCain response — “Desperate, laughable”

Anderson Cooper asked Barack Obama last night to answer the claim that Sarah Palin has more applicable experience than he does. In response, he completely ignores Palin’s status as governor, and then makes the claim that a campaign counts as executive experience:
AC: Some Republican critics say, you don’t have the experience to handle a situation like this [Hurricane Gustav]. They’ve in fact said that Governor Palin has more executive experience as mayor of a small town and as governor of a big state like Alaska. What’s your response?
BO: Well, you know, my understanding is that, uh, Governor Palin’s town of Wasilly [sic] has, uh, 50 employees, uh, uh, we’ve got 2500, uh, in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million a year. Uh, uh, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month. Uh, so I think that, uh, our ability to manage large systems, uh, and to, uh, execute, uh, I think has been made clear over the last couple of years. Uh, and certainly, in terms of, uh, the legislation that I’ve passed just dealing with this issue post-Katrina, uh, of how we handle emergency management. The fact that, uh, many of my recommendations were adopted and are being put in place, uh, as we speak indicates to extent to which we can provide the kinds of support and good service that the American people expect.
Let’s take the last point first. Did Barack Obama pass legislation bearing his recommendations for emergency management? A list of “actions” taken by Obama in the wake of Katrina compiled by a supporter doesn’t exactly lend itself to that conclusion. Once one strips out all of the speeches, the actual legislative actions appear to mostly consist of adding his name as co-sponsor to the bills of others, and it’s unclear whether any of the bills Obama did introduce ever passed.
Even if they did, it gives him no experience at managing disasters. Governors and mayors have to manage disasters, and when they succeed, they save lives. When they fail, as we saw in Katrina, it costs lives. Legislators have no role in disaster management itself, although honestly, disaster management isn’t usually a resumé point when voting for mayor, governor, or President. Whatever impulse exists now to make it one stems from the irrational blame heaped on George Bush for the failures of Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco in Katrina, although FEMA certainly had its failures as well.
But the main point here is that Obama didn’t really answer the question, and he set up a straw man argument in response to Cooper. Governor Palin is, well, governor, and not currently the mayor of Wasila. As Governor, Palin operates a $9 billion budget, and manages $13 billion in revenue. Furthermore, she runs a government that employs 25,000 people.
Obama blithely pretends that she’s still the mayor of “Wasilly” in order to boost himself. However, running for office isn’t executive experience, for one good reason: Obama isn’t the campaign manager. He has a CEO actually running the campaign, handling the budget, and managing the people while Obama makes the speeches.
If this is Obama’s best response on the experience question, the attacks on Palin’s experience will have to stop, unless the campaign wants Obama to keep embarrassing himself while making it.
Update: The McCain campaign has responded to Mark Halperin at Time:
“For Barack Obama to argue that he’s experienced enough to be president because he’s running for president is desperate circular logic and it’s laughable. It is a testament to Barack Obama’s inexperience and failing qualifications that he would stoop to passing off his candidacy as comparable to Governor Sarah Palin’s executive experience managing a budget of over 10 billion dollar dollars, and more than 24,000 employees.” —Tucker Bounds, spokesman John McCain 2008
By that standard, anyone who ever ran for any public office has executive experience — and that also kills their own experience argument against Palin anyway.

And the threat from the Left that an Obama defeat will result in race wars isn’t all that far fetched.
Nice little editorial in the Philly press this morning…the same old same old shrieking Left meme, but something to consider. The money quote: “If McCain wins, look for a full-fledged race and class war, fueled by a deflated and depressed country, soaring crime, homelessness – and hopelessness! “
Since they couldn’t carry out a three-day weekend luxuriating in the afterglow of the Obamassiah’s acceptance speech, and their attacks on Palin as a “responsible” parent failed miserably…that leaves the race card as something they will most certainly use in the next 60 days.
Fear. Using fear to convince voters that only Obama getting elected will prevent massive racial wars across the land…

If Obama thinks his current job is running for president, then the length of the time on the job is just a little less than Palin’s time as governor, right?

Well, that’s the last time I accept a drinking game challenge based on a shot per “uh”.
Luckily it was only orange juice, so I’ll just have to take a long bathroom break.
I wonder if Diebold makes Teleprompters, and whether we can get Rove to have them fiddle with them before all of Obama’s future speeches. He is such a magnificent devil, that Rove.

As Gustav and Katrina have highlighted, Mayors and Governors are always on call to deal with disasters as they may arise.
Gov. Palin has been in the position of being on call for emergencies for more than 2500 days of her government service.
For these 2500+ days, she has needed to be ready to respond to the needs of her city/state. She has had to plan ahead for the problems. She truly could be the one that gets that 3am call.
Her rear is on the line at a moments notice – none of the jobs Obama has held have carried even one day of that level of responsibility, or even authority.

Anderson Cooper did a decent job last night. For example when one of the CNN female reporters was ranting about how Palin couldn’t possibly work as a VP when she has kids to take care of, AC shot right back ‘Why are you not saying the same thing about Obama who also has kids’. The sexism from the liberal females against Palin is mind boggling.
Tobias2012 on September 2, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Click you heels together and repeat after me, there is no bias in the media. How this reporter could not point out the error that she is a Governor and not a Mayor just shows how they don’t bother to report the news any more or challenge false statements.
JeffinSac on September 2, 2008 at 10:52 AM
I wonder how Obama can explain that he and Biden supported the “Bridge to NoWhere” while Palin, after reviewing the facts, turned it down. Oh, Obama would rather support this “bridge” versus sending monies to Katrina victims. Great experience.
http://cdobs.com/archive/our-columns/obama-and-biden-voted-for-bridge-to-nowhere,1628/
Now that Alaska is front and center in the news again, it is a good time to catch up on a favorite story, The Bridge to Nowhere, using the Washington Post US Congress Votes Database.
Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere), she eventually killed the project, chosing to spend Federal money on other infrasturcture programs.
However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

McCain needs to keep this conversation going. It headlines Drudge now. Sarah needs to say “I challenge Obama to a debate. I think it’s more appropriate that we debate since he almost reaches my level of experience, but not quite. We can compare accomplishments and executive experience.“

I, uh, should, um, be president, uuuhhhhhhhhhhhh, because, uh, Im running for er, president.

After I heard one of my favorite talk show hosts criticize Mccain’s pick for VP I thought that all is lost but after I read the transcript of this, man, Palin could be an axe murderer and she’d still look better than this uh, you know, uh, moron.
Didn’t he have a good answer ready for Anderson? Apparently not; he wasn’t informed about the questions or her history. It’s a good thing for Barry that no one watches that show.
The Obamites don’t listen to him except when he’s giving a speech anyway.
I saw/heard this question launched last night but turned the channel before I heard much of a reply, then my curiosity got the best of me and I went back to find that he was trying to pass his campaign off as executive experience. I thought I had fallen asleep and was dreaming…
Christine on September 2, 2008 at 11:23 AM
If Cooper had been interviewing McCain, and McCain had given such a lame, stupid answer, Cooper would have made certain to note that Palin is now a governor and asked the logical follow-up.
But that never happens in today’s media.
By the way: if “running for president” is now Osama Obama’s job, we should ask him to quit the Senate and refund the money he has received for not doing the job he claimed to want.

Blaise on September 2, 2008 at 12:06 PM
When you talk about Americans selecting and voting for Sen. Obama, you really mean Democrats. Most Americans were not permitted, because of party affiliation or lack thereof, to cast a vote for or against Sen. Obama.
One part of the Senator’s response that is not being addressed is that even though he might be running 2,500 employees, they are 100% supportive of and in favor of him. Gov. Palin has to deal with a cantankerous population and a legislature that is most certainly not 100% in her pocket.

It’s not the kids, it’s the number of kids (i.e. more than one spoiled brat). When my niece became preggers with her fourth, she simply took to apologizing lightheartedly in advance to all her liberal workmates. It didn’t stop the snarking behind her back, but she, like Palin is a strong woman. She can handle the hatin’.
Nichevo on September 2, 2008 at 12:16 PM
To which the Obama campaign responds: “Aha! He is a master at delegating responsibility.”
I hate to break it to you but the Obama campaign is totally immune to humiliation. They have totally freed of the shackles of logic and good taste. Watch out. Embarassment won’t stop the Obama campaign from anything – otherwise he wouldn’t even be running.

Obama: “…the legislation that I‘ve passed…”
Passing anything through the United States Senate requires at least 51 votes, in most cases 60 votes. Obama, alone, hasn’t passed ANY legislation–it’s a collective effort. Typical Obama tactics–taking credit for other people’s work.
Palin, as Governor, CAN kill the Bridge to Nowhere or any other pork project with a veto.
Steve Z on September 2, 2008 at 1:11 PM
Is it just me or did Obama just say “Uh” 17 times? Man, he really needs to stop doing that. It’s almost as annoying as McCain’s “my friends.” Actually, scratch that, IT IS more annoying than McCain’s “my friends.”

Obama claiming that running for President gives him the experience to be President….LMAO! According to Obama’s logic this must mean that McCain has double the experience to be President! He has after all run for POTUS twice now…
2Nightmares on September 2, 2008 at 2:04 PM
I forgot to add that Biden must have 3 or 4 times the experience as everybody on both tickets. I think he has ran at least that many times for POTUS!

Comparing his political campaign to the responsibilities of a civil administrator and leader is blatantly stupid. Further, if this is his hallmark accomplishment he should keep quite about it and not embarrass himself. This dolt is unbelievable. Like we’ve been saying, he has done nothing.

Barack Obama: 2500 campaign staffers, ridiculous amounts of money, ridiculous amounts of MSM buttkissery, a country thought to be trending left, and he barely beats Hillary (you have to use scientific notation to numerically express her nagatives), and is basically polling in a dead-heat with the Maverick (who is barely tolerated by half the GOP)?

Don’t know if many folks realize this, but as far as natural disaster threats go, Alaska ranks at the top of the list of any state. They have more earthquakes than Caifornia, get the crap kicked out of them by some horrendous storms, deal with the risk of volcanic eruptions and are at the top of the list for tsunami potential.
In the hotels there are directions in every room regarding what to do in the event of earthquakes or tsunamis.
Their emergency services people are a busy bunch.
Obama is probably going to regret he invited the comparison of his disaster cred by winging a response out there.

Jackass Junior here hasn’t managed anything other than his own career.
Promoting yourself over other, more capable people with actual accomplishments is really the only thing Obama is good at doing.
How about we promote him instantly into ex-President status? Then Obama can go into the mode of Jackass Democrat ex-President, like Carter and Clinton did, and he can collect wheelbarrows full of cash doing it.
Meanwhile, we won’t have to suffer through a lousy Obama Presidency.
It’s a win-win.

Just to clarify, during the same time frame that BHO has been gaining his experience managing his campaign staff of about 2500, Governor Palin has been the elected executive in charge of a state work force of 24,674 which is the average number of State Employees in Alaska according to the US Census Statistics for 2007.
McCain/Palin need only now to start pounding congress for failing to act on energy and or immigration legislation and be critical of Bush for using his VETO pen so little and the election is their’s to lose.
