Must see: Reporters at convention are “rabid” over Kos smears of Palin, say Brzezinski and Barnicle; Update: Smear post disappears from dKos

Superb catch by the ‘Busters but they buried the lede. Click the image to watch and skip ahead to 6:00 for the money part; the thought of the media stooping so low as to offend MSNBC hosts makes my temples throb. Who could have guessed that our beloved Deciders are devoted, uncritical patrons of Nutroots HQ, able to be thrown into a frenzy by nothing more than a photo of Palin and perfunctory comments by some anonymous slackjaw to the effect of, “She doesn’t really look that pregnant-ish in this one”? Blogger Lee Stranahan effectively debunked it with one phone call. Meanwhile, per Barnicle, the pros were calling each other up to try to scrape together a critical mass of innuendo worthy of a patented “questions are being raised” story. Just like they did with John Edwards, you see.
But the bias angle is easy enough, so never mind that. The more coverage of Palin I see, the clearer it is that the media thinks its job here isn’t so much to find out the truth about her as to simply “test her mettle” by putting her through a wringer — even if the wringer’s composed of, um, slander. See, e.g., CNN gratuitously mentioning the dKos rumors about Trig Palin yesterday as a lead-in to the story about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy. A more benign form is the way they’ve inflated some of the more mundane details about her to the level of breathless revelation to fit the “loose cannon” narrative they’re trying to build. Check out the lefty link action on WaPo’s front-pager about Palin having –gasp — sought earmarks as mayor of Wasilla. Sure, she was a whistleblower on corruption, and yeah, she opposed Alaska’s GOP establishment as governor, and okay, she canceled the bridge to nowhere (after initially supporting it!!1!), but she’s taken earmarks. Really, now: What kind of “Change” candidate does that?
Exit question: How would the VP coverage have gone if Obama hadn’t run, Hillary had won the nomination, and then surprised everyone by tapping him as VP? Wright and Rezko and Ayers and infanticide in rapid succession: Clearly, our media would conclude that this dangerously untested ingenue is too unknown a quantity to be a heartbeat away, with Tom Eagleton comparisons gleefully invoked starting, oh, 72 hours in.
Update: A follow-up exit question: How important is Sullivan in “mainstreaming” the most repulsive smears for big media consumption? The media knows his name and his credentials at TNR and The Atlantic and therefore assumes that if something filthy’s being “aired” at the Daily Dish, there must be something to it. (Big mistake.) Howard Kurtz actually still thinks he’s “right-leaning” even though he voted Democrat last time, will vote Democrat again now, and spends an overwhelmingly disproportionate amount of his time defending Obama and attacking the right. Hey, Howard: Did you know that I’m actually a far-left liberal? I just happen to have become “disillusioned” with my side’s behavior since turning 10 years old. Call me a “socialist of doubt.”
Update: Absolutely the perfect ending to this story: Its mission having been completed, the dKos smear post that so enthralled our press corps has now been quietly suppressed.

I have a question…Did John Edwards take the Abstinence Only Sex Ed Course or the Contraceptive one?
And what do his actions say about John and his family?
Was he really fully vetted?
Was he really capable enough to run for office?

Scum of the Earth. The American media. I’m beginning to think we’re on the wrong side. Can an American immigrate to Russia or China?

The think obtaining $500,000 for a youth center is the same as the bridge to nowhere.
Moral equivalency at it’s worst.
This is getting better, the more “outing” of dkos, and the associations with CNN and the Dems the better for the Republicans.
Us who live in the world know how despicable dkos is, the rest of the U.S. needs to know.

Awesome. “The Trap” is unavoidable. Obama possums cant help themselves. The question is, will it help McCain/Palin? How do they use it effectively?
O’Reilly began the tie of DailyKos to Obama last night on his show. Which by the way, does anyone know who the blogger was that splashed the “Trig is your grandson” story and where he got the idea and information to do this?

I’m thinking protest over the death of Journalism in America are needed outside the headquarters of CBS, NBC, ABC and CNN, like yesterday.
only problem is who will cover it? Drudge?
jp on September 2, 2008 at 11:34 AM
No, I’ve never seen “journalism” in such a sorry state — and I remember Watergate and as working in “journalism” while it was taking place (watched Nixon leave the Whhite House, the whole thing, “live” — following many dreadful prior events in our nation, a few of which were gruesom, all taking place at that time).
I THINK that the internet readiness, or, ready availability, is what’s motivating this problem. Us human beings have not YET mastered wisdom with the internet, only attempted cunning. Thus, what at some point once was known as “journalism” is today moreorless a gossip fest, people talking, anything that’s stated is then deemed to be reported.
Which is technically correct (anything stated is also reported), but not in professional or craft terms (not everything is art, though everything exists).
It’s likely going to take a while for humans to grow our cultural intelligence. The internet reflects our “stone age” level cultural intelligence at present, in my view.

The media’s intent is to quickly build up the muck so they can start “asking the question” the lefty sphere is already fantasizing over: “When will she drop out and say she needs to take care of her family? Which by the way she’s a bad mother for putting them in this position and spotlight and she should have known better than to accept the job, and omg McCain is a dumb idiot who can’t be trusted on anything—VOTE OBAMA!!!111!!”

I am not sure what is more disgusting, exploiting a 17 year old girl or threatening race wars if Obama loses.
Damiano on September 2, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Yes. Just do a little research on the Internet and you will see little has changed. I find it amusing that the NYT made it big by saying the Titanic had sunk when in fact they had no evidence of that and were most likely as shocked as everyone else that it really had. They ran a headline that it sunk based on hearing radio traffic in Morse code form parts unknown.

It’s a shame so much time and energy has to be wasted highlighting MSM’s shenanigans – even more unfortunate that it’s necessary. I worry that enough people take these “Professionals” seriously to affect the elections outcome. This also prevents proper focus on real political issues.

The media consist of out of touch liberal ideologs and aevery dingle time they over play their hand and end up pissing off so many the media helps elect a Republican.
They have pissed off a LOT of people, they can’t seem to aks if Obama or Biden should be considered unqualified if they had a pregnant daughter pregnant, but then the media collectively is sexist.

they are trying to force Palin on Defense, so she can’t ever get on offense to make her compelling case. Thats what all this gutter stuff is about as much as anything.
the fact the Dems are so corrupt and they let them get away with murder and we can’t inform the average Joe without going through an outlet they are told is ‘bias conservative’ is frustrating.

This is a shot right across the bow of the USS Olbermann who both writes for the DKos and also regularly uses material from that site and other leftwing sites for stories that he uses on his pretend news show.
As they point out, any journalist who uses material from ideological websites without vetting it and checking it is not a profesional journalist.
I.e., Keith Olbermann.

The enormous gaggle of “C” average journalist majors in this country is absolutely disgusting. In Fact, even the few on the far right of the curve are less than impressive. What we have here is a lot of chronic voyeurs that have made a cottage industry out of a constitutional right. Even though they have a right to speak, they seem to forget that there is no requirement for anyone to believe them.

Indeed. It is ALL tabloid journalism. The brainwashing in the public schools has reached fruition. The people running the mass media, and subsequently, the populace have bought into humanism, situational ethics, and moral relativism. The result is that no one cares about the truth anymore — because they don’t even believe that it exists in the first place.
My collie says:
They will eat your brain, if you let them. The media are teh zombies.

The only people who should be forced to resign this week are Markos Moulitsas, Andrew Sullivan, and that dumbass Obama spokesman.
rockmom on September 2, 2008 at 11:45 AM
The KosKids will never admit how horrifically pwned they were on this. Not only were they completely wrong, but they gave Palin the perfect excuse to release a potentially bad news story as a defense to false slander.
The left was manipulated in a way that could only be described as Rovian.
ROVE YOU MAGNIFICIENT BASTARD!
BohicaTwentyTwo on September 2, 2008 at 11:45 AM
And part of that is lefty bias. But it is also symptomatic of the MSM’s Beltway elitist mentality. It’s hazing the Palins for wanting to join what they see as their sorority/fraternity. That this is more about the American people stopped registering with them years ago, if it ever registered with them. The slander titilates them because it plays into their contempt for people who do things like fish and hunt, have daughters who choose life, etc.
Karl on September 2, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Hmmm… I don’t know… I think the public is getting fed up with this crap… Three women I know, including my teenage daughter, see this bogus coverage for what it is.
Theres a spectrum of coverage… and a permissable band of bias… MSM has gone too far as shown by the polls about the trust of the media. This is going to get interesting.

Why do I keep seeing references to Andrew Sullivan? I’ve never gone to a blog he’s posted at (not that I’m aware). I never read TNR when he was there (it had already gone deep into the sh*tter at that point). I never read any article of his and have never cared what he said about anything. I don’t see him on TV – save one or two appearances that left me asking, “Who the heck was that moron?”
Maybe I’m just out of touch, but talk about Sullivan always reminds me of bigfoot (droppings) sightings.

jp on September 2, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Bingo. It’s ALL calculated for effect, and veracity of message has little to do with it.
In its Palinophobia, MSM and Obamosphere are using words however most expedient to destroy Palin and undermine our support of her. It has nothing to do with finding out the truth about her, and everything to do with regaining control of the campaign narrative.
petefrt on September 2, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Sarah Palin, alone, has outed the DNC voters and party hacks, with hardly a scant word.
The DNC voters and party hacks, work solely off of emotion 1st, which is what we are seeing here since Palin was named the VP candidate. They cannot control their emotions, just like a mosquito cant resist the UV light on the back porch ZAP!!!!!!!!! Before they know it, they have overplayed their hand once again, and will soon tuck tail and run.
TheHat on September 2, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Okay, but that’s not the key issues on the table.
One issue is the (attempted) linking by the Obama campaign and the press of Palin with Buchanan.
There is no evidence that she endorsed or supported Buchanan.
That’s a smear.
Second is the uncritical use by the press of smears promoted by leftwing (or partisan) websites. That is simply unacceptable journalism.
We can debate the character of Buchanan at another time since thatl, it seems to me, is really ancillary to the more important topics raised.
SteveMG on September 2, 2008 at 11:51 AM
The downward spiral in journalism began with the assumption that ‘changing the world’ was more rewarding than professionalism in reportage. Making History is their new vocation. I hope their extinction is the event that ends up in the history books.

The photos of Britol holding her baby brother that they tried to offer as proof that she was the mother backfired.

Puke Buchanan at least let his TV buddies handle his defense, and they did so nicely.. He may not be a nazi sympathizer but he sure is a hell of a sympathizer to anyone who doesn’t like Jews. I’d use the preferred pejorative Joooos but in this case I think Patty boy dislikes us both.
Thank goodness on American TV you can pretty much call a young Alaskan girl who never did wrong to anyone a whore, but heavens forbid you call out Pat Buchanan an anti-semite heads will roll lol. That doesn’t excuse the left’s lowball use of both these issues politically in this manner, but thanks to MSNBC for letting me see Pat Buchanan announce his foreign policy views are close to Obama’s. Now at least I know my fears of both of them are somewhat justified :)

The media is not part of government. If you believe that, then you have bought into their self-serving propaganda.
The media has always been this way. Any student of history that has dug thru the papers knows that the rules of journalism are simple.
- If it bleeds it leads.
- If it is not bleeding, make it or fake it.
- Sex sells, especially with blood.
Reporters are some of the worst fictional authors I have seen. They can’t get their “stories straight”.
This has been true since that particular form of vulture was invented. While others make history, they make noise…

(I didn’t read all the comments, so I don’t know if anyone already mentioned this above) More interestingly – what if Obama had picked Clinton as his VP? Do you think we’d see feminist outrage at the tokenism of the Obama-Clinton ticket? Or would we see lots of breathless coverage of the historic Democrat presidential campaign?
Enrique on September 2, 2008 at 12:14 PM
My response to these smear bloggers on DKos and HuffPo is go ahead, keep posting your hatred and vileness. The more reporters that get sickened by all of this, the better. Maybe some of them will finally start seeing these sites for what they really are and will stop turning to them for updates and information, maybe even be instrumental in getting them shut down once and for all. DKos and HuffPo are not journalism sites, they are not even blogs. They are the meeting places for some of the absolute worst examples of what could lightly be called humanity.

I can’t help but feel a bit discouraged about all that’s happened this weekend. I’m still excited about Sarah Palin,
but I’m beginning to doubt whether McCain can overcome the trilateral commission (the Democratic party, their foot soldier goons on the left blog, and media sycophants). The media are *especially* bad this year as far as bias – they
aren’t even trying to hide it (maybe that’s healthier). In any case I can always go to Hugh Hewitt for a dose of happy kool-aid to counteract Allah’s frequent “heart-ache” posts.

Whats interesting now however is that in the past, there was a distinct line between Hard News, and commentary.
Editors wanted the facts.. the whole who, what, when, where, how thing… instead of Biased commentary. There was bias in Story Selection, but that was done by the Editorial boards more than the reporters themselves….
Now? We constantly see huge bias inside the stories themselves, even to the point of headlines totaly disagreeing with what is in the actual story.

Pat may not be well-informed enough but I’m sorry, Mr. Brzezinski has been one of THE biggest supporters of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Khomeinist regime from the get-go back in 1978. He is SHAMELESS in his efforts in backing some of THE most disreputable Iranian organizations in DC, set up specifically in order to promote the Mullahs. The National Iranian American Council which claims to be an organization that is meant to help Iranian-Americans in being more civic-minded in the U.S., does nothing of the kind. The founder, the young man, pet of Mr. Brzezinski, Trita Parsi is one of the best-known supporters of the Mullahs outside the U.S. Here’s an article that will give anyone who wants to know more a little insight about these characters and their affiliations:
1. http://english.iranianlobby.com/page1.php?id=11&bakhsh=ARTICLES
2. http://frontpagemag.com/Articles/Read.aspx?GUID=046095EF-ACDA-48DF-BB0F-EA6B68330102
These are just two small examples; but let’s see what results Mr. Brzezinski and his band of cronies at the Council on Foreign Relations got when they invited the churlish Ahmadinejad to meet with them, to get him to play ball, back in 2006:

The fact is that anyone who thinks that talking to Iran, Buchanan (who probably has good intentions) to Brzezinski who has been one of the biggest backers and protectors of the Mullahs in the last 31 years, is living either in a dream world OR really wants the misery of the people of the middle east.

I seem to recall that when the Obamanation’s mettle was being tested after revelations of Rev Wright in March, 2008, he went on to lose ten major primary contests. However, he still never has received the full treatment from the adoring lib media. He would crumple under its weight like a sad discarded socialist flag.

I went to the Daily Kos post and they had a poll asking if this diary should be deleted. Overwhelmingly the response was ‘delete’. This was Friday. Finally it gets deleted?
My other point is this: As far as I know Daily Kos and Alan Colmes are the only ones in the Blogoshere who consider deleting posts good web etiquette. Has Hot Air ever deleted a post? Has Mark Stein? Michelle Malkin? Even the Katrina Cannibal story was only updated when the story was debunked.
I’m sure if they had their way the book burners wouldn’t stop at their own; these tactics are dispicable.

To a degree, but it’s gotten worse in the sense that before they at least pretended to be objective and to adhere to what were considered common standards of decency. Now: no need! Let it all hang out! Crush the fascist right! Onward to frenzied victory!

Now that I am a fullfledged subscriber to the Daily Kos (I had to register in order to send in a response last week), I occasionally drop in over there to check out what Markos Moulitzos and the Katzenjammer Kids are up to. They certainly do have a collection of angry lefties over there. Their reaction to the Sarah Palin nomination is a case in point.
In the past few days, Daily Kos has been running with an Internet rumor that Sarah Palin’s baby, born in April with Downs Syndrome, was really the child of Palin’s daughter, Bristol, who is 17. According to the story, Palin claimed to be the mother to protect her daughter. The Kos also showed photos allegedly taken of Palin with no noticeable bulge during the time she would have been 6 months pregnant.
Well, with that story growing on the Internet, Palin has now announced that Bristol is currently pregnant with a child due in December, which makes it very unlikely that Bristol gave birth to a baby in April (do the math). Palin states that Bristol plans to have the child and marry the father.
John McCain, who was reportedly advised of the situation, is supposedly furious at the Daily Kos for forcing Palin to go public due to the unsubstantiated Internet rumors. In addition, Bill O’Reilly, no fan of the Kos, has also chimed in with his condemnation of the blog as a hate site. The Kos is fighting back with its own attacks on O’Reilly and Juan Williams, who one writer described as “the white man’s black man”.
Meanwhile, kudos to Barack Obama for publicly stating that the Palin story is off limits.
Also today, the Kos is focusing on the events in the Minneapolis-St Paul area, which is being wracked by violent demonstrations by anarchists. Police have been assaulted, police cars damaged and windows broken. Yet, the Kos is accusing the police of attacking “peaceful” protesters. Whose side is the Kos on?
Save your comments. It was just a rhetorical question.

I think you can make the case that Dan Rather’s activities in 2004 really freed the media. Using forged documents to bring down a president at the last minute in an election was several order of magnitude beyond anything the MSM had tried to that point…and it came so close to working. If Rather’s forger had used a typewriter we’d have President Kerry today.
Keep in mind that was in service of a man that few people actually wanted to be president (Rather and friends just hated Bush that much). The MSM is in love with Obama – consider Chris Matthews’s tingling senations. I think in the run up to this election you’ll see many reporters/journalists reprize Rather’s role in 2004.
