McCain campaign: Palin a Republican since 1982; Update: Documentation

posted at 12:05 pm on September 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, the New York Times reported that Sarah Palin had belonged to the Alaskan Independence Party in the early 1990s instead of the Republican Party.   The AIP now exists mostly as a fringe political party, but had been mainstream enough in 1994 that their gubernatorial candidate had attracted 38% of the vote.  Later, though, the party appeared to emphasize an effort to explore options regarding secession and independence.

Now, however, the McCain campaign blog McCain Report states that New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller simply made it up:

While the press scrambles to report on the process by which Governor Palin was offered the second spot on the Republican ticket, New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller has opted instead to make up her own version of events. As the AP reports, “Sarah Palin voluntarily told John McCain’s campaign about her pregnant teenage daughter and her husband’s 2-decade-old DUI arrest during questioning as part of the Republican’s vice presidential search, the lawyer who conducted the background review said.” Yet according to Bumiller, yesterday’s disclosures “called into question” how thoroughly Governor Palin had been vetted. Why the discrepancy? It seems one reporter actually reported the story, while Bumiller made up her own. …

And Bumiller writes that Governor Palin “was a member for two years in the 1990s of the Alaska Independence Party.” Not true, and unsourced. Governor Palin has been a registered Republican since 1982.

I’m not aware that Bumiller reported on this story, but she’s not the only one who did so.  Jake Tapper, generally regarded as a balanced and careful political reporter, also reported on the story yesterday.  Lynnette Clark, an AIP official, went on record with ABC at least to make this allegation, such as it was.  Given that, it hardly seems accurate to call it “unsourced” or to focus one’s ire on Bumiller, at least in this case.

Tapper also contacted the McCain campaign, though, who provided documentation to refute the allegation:

A day after ABC News requested a response from Palin as to whether she was ever a member of the AIP, McCain campain spox Brian Rogers told ABC News that Clark’s “allegations are false.”

“Governor Palin has been a registered Republican since 1982,” Rogers says, providing some voter registration documentation showing her to be a Republican. “As you know, if she changed her registration, there would have been some record of it. There isn’t.”

Rogers says the McCain campaign provided ABC News with all the voter registration information that exists. Rogers says that Palin didn’t attend the AIP convention in 1994, “but she visited them when they had their convention in Wasilla in 2000 as a courtesy since she was mayor.”

He would not comment as to why AIP officials are so convinced Palin was a member of their party. When asked if Palin ever identified herself as a member of the AIP, Rogers said, “No, she’s a lifelong Republican.”

Sarah Palin never belonged to the AIP.  That’s the bottom line.  Instead of making this argument about Bumiller, the McCain report would be better served by pointing the finger at Lynette Clark, who is obviously so desperate for attention that she exploited Palin’s newfound fame to get her 15 minutes in the limelight.

Update: I got a PDF copy of the documentation showing Palin to have remained Republican her entire adult life.  Even I don’t pass that test; I flirted with the Libertarian Party briefly in 1992, but wound up voting Republican anyway in the presidential election.

I heard this morning, it was on either ABC or the local conservative CBS affilaite in charlotte, can’t remember.

the dems/media are desperate. This pick is a gambel in many ways, and it could pay off huge. Not just by defeating the dems, but throughly discrediting the media

Ok waiting for the “but she is a Vaginal Robert E Lee” people here to retract in 5,4,3,2…….what…you mean it’ll be a longer wait than that????

26 years is not long enough?

But then she would have been 18 if she was ever a member of that party…..

what was Barry doing at 18?

Well the M$M doesn’t want me going there….

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 12:09 PM

wait the NY Times which ran a false story about McCain having an affair with a lobbiest and the same Times that said “McCain was angry at our reporter” when he barely raised his voice ?

That NY Times ?

William Amos on September 2, 2008 at 12:11 PM

You know. Alaskan’s are getting quite tired of the BS.

People seriously lying just because they do not like the pick is getting old. If anyone looked into Sarah’s past knows this woman has and is a true red blooded American to the core and is normal in every way. They aren’t rich, they have problems like every other family.

This is quite a bunch of crap.

Sadly, it took me a bit longer.

Did Obama ever learn how to work on a car engine? I’m just asking in case he doesn’t recognize that backfire sound that keeps going off when his minions attack Palin.

Palin: Maybe a member of a then-mainstream third party a dozen years ago.

Obama: A few months ago resigned from black separatist church only to give its members a break.

NYT motto in the post Jayson Blair era:

All the news we could make up.

EconomicNeocon on September 2, 2008 at 12:17 PM

Bumiller should have been fired from the NYT long ago, would have been fired if the Slimes’s publisher had either ethics or balls.

But then so should all the commentariat at the WaPoo and many other newspapers and media outlets.

Opposing views are one matter: outright lies and scurrilous accusations are another.

sven10077 has it right: this all deflects attention to the issue that affects the fate — maybe even the survival — of the nation: who is this Barack Obama who wants to lead us, what does he believe, and how will his past and present life, associations and beliefs serve us?

The answers to the latter questions are, I fear, far more dangerous to us than Palin’s stands on abortion and abstinence.

MrScribbler on September 2, 2008 at 12:17 PM

McCain is Bush 2…as far as the media goes. He has become more and more pushed to the side as was bush and now every story will be about how he is hard to work with.

It happens to everyone. Reagan was great not because of any one thing he did, but because of his ability to deal with them.

Years and years ago I supported PETA. They did great work raising awareness for the need to spay and neuter your pets.

But then they took a left hand turn down Insanity Boulevard and started to espouse the belief that animals were not only equal to humans, but somehow even better.

I’ll never support them again.

And isn’t this the way things are supposed to work – you support something unless and until they change what they’re for?

Lynette Clark, who is obviously so desperate for attention that she exploited Palin’s newfound fame to get her 15 minutes in the limelight.

Lynette and Dexter Clark have been saying this for almost a year now, if not longer, and not just to grab media attention. Then there’s the strange case of her videotaped message to the AIP: “keep up the good work”. I’m not saying that there’s anything crazy about Palin, but be careful with this one – I’m not sure if a single statement from the McCain campaign is going to put this one to bed yet.

I see where you posted that you would not vote for McCain. What you people don’t understand is that the McCain people do not want your vote or support. Anyone that is so sensitive as to believe any rumor thrown at them is not a loyal or trustworthy supporter. Those rumor mongers do more harm then good. It is better to keep them outside the party, where they belong. The Republican party is trying hard to purge those type of people out of the ranks. The liberal blogs love your type of thinking, just look at the past 48 hours, you know that ones you have been quoting.
Not saying you are a liberal, just the same mindset as the liberal bloggers.

3) he exposed Barry to counter attack on any point attempted to be made about Sarah

What happened to two independent sources for verification?

Yes, McCain’s campaign should point the finger at Lynette Clark, but anything anyone says is a fact shouldn’t make the news without some verification and that is Bumiller’s job, right? And when those vaunted ‘guardians’ don’t do their job they should be called on it, so I have no problem with McCain’s campaign going after Bumiller.

Given that, it hardly seems accurate to call it “unsourced” or to focus one’s ire on Bumiller, at least in this case.

When your sources are not credible is it accurate to call your article sourced?

You know they are looking for dirt. Wouldn’t you expect them to make an extra effort to be accurate in case they, you know, unfairly slime someone?

There is always a problem when you rely on names as proof. As much as you think a name is unique, I assure you that after working with numerous databases, it is not. So, unless you have an address, ss#, etc., a name alone, if it even exists, is worth bupkis. And even if you have the aforementioned items, it still is not a 100% guarantee.

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Look at this picture…

I wonder who will be the first to compare Palin’s story to the Geena Davis TV show a year ago (Sorry forgot the name). Remember how it was supposed to be preparing the country for a female president just in time for Hillary to run. Ironically, it resembles more the talk of Sarah Palin. A female Vice president gets the top job when the President dies shortly after taking office. In that show, many questioned her ability to be president and run her family (complete with a wayward teenage daughter) amid accusations that she only was given the VP role because she was a woman. If I recall, Geena Davis’ character was only a school teacher prior to being chosen for VP while Sarah Palin is a governor, so the comparison really does not completely fit. Even with the weak resume, the show did make Geena look strong and able to whip the House Leader into submission.

AverageJoe on September 2, 2008 at 12:48 PM

I’m reading about this organization called “Feminists for Life”, of which Gov. Palin is a member, and I fail to see how feminism jives with the idea of being “pro-family.” But hey, I’m not holding my breath for any “evangelical” leaders to say anything about it.
On a side note, folks may be interested in the findings of Gun Owners of America in regards to McCain. Don’t trust the words of a politician. Trust his deeds.

Here we expose how the left has lied about Palin (along with “Trig is not her baby”) for the past 48 hours. So far his lack of vetting has shown what? They knew (as the whole town did) about her pregnancy. Now they did not know she was a member of AIP, and neither did she…but you embraced it.
That as mayor she sought out funds for a youth program? But denied millions for a “bridge”?

My laptop’s on the fritz. Three good years of work but it’s on its last legs – lots of bluescreen in the past two months, likely some hard drive damage. Thusly my work computer is my only reliable connection… so no show on holiday weekends.

Plus I was out of the house most of the time. ;)

Gotta tell you, I’ve never seen a raking of a single person that the media is doing to Sarah Palin. This is blowback in the highest degree becuase he took the winds out of Obama’s sails.

Vincenzo on September 2, 2008 at 12:50 PM

You were running fairly hard at “palin wantz the Alaska to secedez” meme in the other thread and pushing Mitt or Fred.

Get over it I have 10 million reason Sarah is staying and I was 600 of them.

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 12:46 PM

Keep yer next $600 in your pocket, angry one. I am talking bout having Fred or Mitt at the top-o-ticket, as opposed to WT McCain.

As for Palin, yes the attacks will solidify much support, but for those not already disposed, may very well turn them off. McCain could have and should have done this differently.

trailboss on September 2, 2008 at 12:50 PM

They may be getting this from a video that floating around were she threw em a bone by telling them they were an important part of Alaska’s political system or something. Kinda like Republicans patting the Libertarians on the back every once in awhile.

Where did all these crappy little trolls spring up from?

TexasJew on September 2, 2008 at 12:51 PM

I’m finding this information on Wiki:

Palin began her political career in 1992 when she ran for Wasilla city council, supporting a controversial new sales tax and advocating “a safer, more progressive Wasilla”.[17] She won and served two terms on the council from 1992 to 1996.

According to officials of the Alaska Independence Party, Sarah Palin was a member in 1994.[3] A portion of the party’s platform “challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote … [under] international law” and calls for a referendum on whether Alaska should secede from the United States to become an independent nation, remain a state, or become a U.S. territory or commonwealth.[3][18] Palin remained on good terms with the AIP,[19][3][20] and would later give a “welcome” speech to the 2008 AIP Convention.[21]After registering as a Republican in 1996, Palin challenged and defeated incumbent John Stein for the non-partisan office of mayor, criticizing wasteful spending and high taxes.[7] In October 1996, she asked the police chief, librarian, public works director, and finance director to resign, and instituted a policy requiring department heads to get her approval before talking to reporters.[22] The librarian kept the job, despite a dispute over inquires by Palin on how to ban books including inappropriate language,[23] but in January 1997, Palin fired the police chief, citing a failure to support her administration.[24] Palin said in a letter that she wanted a change because she believed the two did not fully support her administration.[25] A court dismissed a suit subsequently filed by the police chief, finding that Palin had the right to fire city employees even for political reasons.[26]

Anyone know about this?

I’m a pro-family male feminist.

I back my soldier wife getting equal pay for equal work. I support her having whatever career she wants that she is qualified for. If the good of the family were to require me to scale back I would.

I don’t get what your rant is over?

Wiki’s about as credible as the NYT and largely written by the same hacks.

It is her job to make personell decisions, and she was not a member of the AIP.

sven10077 on September 2, 2008 at 12:53 PM

You can debunk the lies in 24 hours, but the left will keep repeating it for the next two months.

Truth does not matter to them, only their own power.

Yes, I don’t have the link, but one of blogs (I think LGF) linked to a bunch of dkos posts. One of the posts was from an editor of Wiki. He proposed that people submit as much information as they can about Palin. If enough submit similar info (he was referring to false accusations) then it will “stick”. He said the more disinformation the better.
I think the WIKI is not the place to go to for info. Look at the other post on HA and you will see that the person who made that claim is backing off it.
According to the vetting process, Palin was never a member of this organization.

right2bright on September 2, 2008 at 12:58 PM

KMC1 on September 2, 2008 at 12:52 PM

1. Tax couldn’t have been that controversial since she was elected.

2. Palin has been a registered republican since 1982. The AIP is garbage.

I have to fisk the rest but since they have already been dishonest, I would be surprised if the rest is also not lies.

Someone with wiki privileges needs to edit and protect that page.

Blake on September 2, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Well I was wondering how long it would be before the liberal women at work would get the claws out for Palin. Answer: just under one hour (I was too busy arguing to note the exact time).

Apparently McCain had no idea about the baby, Sarah is a hypocrite for her daughter getting pregnant, they tried to cover up the pregnancy and it’s horrible the Palins are forcing her to get married.

The hypocrite charge was my favorite. The woman who made it is a 31 yr old thrice married mother of one who is engaged in an ongoing court battle about he parenting of her kid. In her defense her ex is really nuts, but I wonder what she’d say if I called her mom a hypocrite? I didn’t because 1) i’m friends with her 2) i wouldnt have believed it if I said it and 3) I don’t want to get kicked in the crotch.

The crazy libs never fail to disappoint!

I think the WIKI is not the place to go to for info.

Unfortunately, other people do. Wiki needs to be corrected and the editor needs to get his privileges yanked.

This is turning into one hell of a dirty campaign.

Yeah, that will get you some traction, claiming I am a Kos kid.
You bought into “she was not vetted”, so far the people who have claimed that, have been debunked. This forum is a discussion of what matters to conservatives, and perpetrating this “she was not vetted” nonsense that was born from the liberals attack machine is being outed.
Sorry you were caught spreading and believing that liberal talking point…if I were you I would have lashed out at me also, it is embarrassing to be caught falling for the liberal line…”she was not vetted”.

I have lived in Alaska for quite some time also, and I’ll let you in on a little secret that the MSM is not aware of yet…

Alaskan women are NOT the kind of women that the average woman can identify with in any way..

Without disclosing too much, I’ll give you a little hint.

For every woman in Alaska, there are about 100 desperate men, willing to kill for her
