GOP convention, night two: Thompson and Lieberman

Here’s your comment thread. 7 p.m. ET on C-SPAN; watch online if you’re not near a TV. Bush will speak via satellite at some point and then it’s Fred plating bleeding chunks of red meat and Joementum reprising Zell Miller — but kinder and gentler! — in primetime.
How intense is public interest in Palin? Judging by online activity, more intense than it’s ever been even for The One. Our heroine’s lying low for now, but if you’re hungry for more, here’s tomorrow’s “scandal” today: HuffPo video of her addressing a Pentecostal church and asking for prayers that the task of U.S. troops be “a task that is from God” and “that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.” NBC has already picked it up and is naturally very, very concerned. Too early to tell yet which stereotype of evangelicals the left will try to demagogue her with, the idea that they want to wage a holy war on Muslims or the idea that they’re trying to bring about the Rapture and the U.S. military is the fastest path to Armageddon. But it sounds to me like all she’s really saying here is that she hopes God approves of what we’re doing, which must be the most rudimentary prayer in all of Christendom. Am I right or has my benighted atheism clouded my judgment once again. Weigh in!
While you mull that, here’s video from CNN of Sally Quinn telling Christians how they’re supposed to feel about a working mom neglecting her kids by going off gallivanting to shop or get her hair done or run for vice president of the United States. Like Andy McCarthy says, it’s downright heartwarming to see the left take such an interest in the Palin children’s well-being after so cruelly ignoring the effect on the Obama girls of having daddy away for such long stretches at a time. (Barney Frank not included!) Exit quotation: “Sarah was a touchdown, but I feel like we’re looking at it on the video replay for a final call.”

See Entelechy, I wasn’t being mean to Lieberman, its just that Zell Miller’s a hard act to follow.

Of course Obama can quote the bible in his nomination speech. Of course Muslims should be aloud to gather on airplanes and pray then file lawsuits against the people who were scared by them.
But god forbid Sarah Palin pray…

Me too. I am SO DONE with the bias and the hatred. I REFUSE to watch CNN, MSNBC, or the big three. I’m fed up.

I hate to break this to you, Ole’ buddy Allah…. but I’ve yet to meet or hear of a positive, optimistic atheist.
What you all don’t comprehend is just how that much that clouds your judgment, day in and day out.
Every atheist I’ve ever known just has this sour puss perspective about everything… haven’t figured out if there is a redemptive value in this trait or not.. other than deserving a good whiplashing on a daily basis.
And don’t even ask me to look for a partner in crime for you… you all are impossible to please.
And with that I have to get some rest. I expect all you troopers to give the resident goat herder his hourly beating to keep him in shape, while I’m gone.
Cheers.

Best of the night
1. Newt Gingrich utterly destroying Ron Allen on MSNBC after Lieberman’s speech
2. Joe Lieberman exposing Obama
3. Switching the order so it was Fred, then Joe Lieberman
4. Medal of Honor winners, POWs, and veterans. Michael Mansour’s sister receiving unending applause, and breaking down.
5. Fred Thompson telling John McCain’s story.
6. George W. Bush delivering a solid speech with no rough spots
7. Laura Bush being Laura.
8. The energy of the crowd. It was incredible! I watched on C-SPAN before the RNC chairwoman opened the convention, right at 8pm (eastern) and the crowd was just dazzling, waving the signs, etc.
9. “Country First” is a great slogan
10. The McCain family.
This convention is going terrific. It’s home run after home run the whole night.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that this speech tonight by Joe most likely cost him his head of homeland security seat in the Senate after Nov. if the Dem.’s win more seats then they have now they will no longer need him around, just something to keep in mind.

I watched Zell Miller’s speech live on TV that night in 2004. He helped GWB win the election that year, I think.

Two lines from Thompson’s speech sent up some red flags for me:
Please, leave the military out of this. The military is apolitical. Speak for yourselves, and not attempt to do so for “the men and women who wear America’s uniform.” I don’t mind him talking about his time in the military. I don’t mind him talking about how much he appreciates, supports, understands, etc. the military. I do mind Thompson’s assertion that McCain and “the men and women who wear America’s uniform” share the same values and beliefs just because they all wore a uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Technically speaking, I can’t even say that I’m in the military and confirm or deny Thompson’s assertion in the same sentence. It’s no different than a politician saying, “The military loves me.” This sort of statement is not fair to the military, since Service Members are in no position to take sides, and is a gross over-generalization of an organization that is supposed to be apolitical in the first place. I’m sure people here can understand the implications of a military that didn’t have this sort of policy.
Yeah, Breyer and Ginsburg have hurt quite a bit. I sure wish that Sen. McCain hadn’t voted in favor of their confirmations.

What an AWESOME smackdown from Gingrich! Well done! That reporter had his ass handed to him.
THAT is how the media should be handled.
techno_barbarian on September 3, 2008 at 12:19 AM
That was great.
Laura Ingraham just absolutely ripped Greta to shreds. She was talking about Fred’s speech and how Palin has been treated and interrupted herself to ask Greta why G was rolling her eyes. She demanded to know why and asked am I boring you Greta?
Then Laura went on a nice long rant about how if Palin was a Dem she’d be a hero. She wouldn’t let Greta interrupt. When Laura was talking about not going to Europe and criticizing your country but standing for America, Greta tried to interject some words about McCain and torture, but Laura just kept right on rolling along.
Finally, as Greta was trying desperately to regain control and saying we only have a minute, Laura patted!! her on the shoulder and said next time I’ll try not to bore you.
Greta tried to make some crack about Laura being tired and cranky, but I’ll tell you Greta was thoroughly pwned!
Laura is 10X times as articulate and 10X smarter. The words and points just kept pouring out!

Interesting night, too bad Thompson didn’t have this much enthusiasm when he was running. Hope this won’t be the end of Liebermans career, he reminds me of the democrats of old. Yes he wasn’t fired up as was Miller, but thats not his character, and no I don’t think he will ever become a Republican, he will always be a Democrat that puts his country before the party. Interesting, I haven’t seen the party come together like this since Ike and Regan.

Right after Lieberman finished, MSNBC went to Ron Allen interviewing Gingrich on the floor. I was thinking that MSNBC found the Republican with the lowest likeability numbers (Gingrich has maybe 8% national likeability ratings), and they’re going to associate the convention with the negative public image of Gingrich.
Then Gingrich turns every question by Ron Allen around, scoring point after point. Finally, Ron Allen plays what he thinks is his trump card, Sarah Palin’s supposed lack of experience. That’s when Gingrich simply wipes the mat with Olberdouche’s lackey.
It turns out Gingrich knew what MSNBC was trying to do, and, as in jujitsu, flipped his negative image to attack mode, in devastating fashion. I’d like to see the entire interview again. I don’t think MSNBC will ever show it on air, though, Gingrich discredited MSNBC thoroughly.

While at on a walk at work today I was discussing with a co-worker the strategy of the Obama camp refusing to acknowledge that Gov. Palin is indeed a governor instead of a small town mayor. A woman who was making a delivery to our mail room asked if we were talking about McCain’s V.P. pick and started on a rant (not threatening) about her being an employee of the evil oil companies. Interesting.

A few observations from soggy Hawgland…Watched tonight via Fox News…Right Said FRED!! had some very good lines and a lot of energy…Joe was pretty good and his emphasis on country before party was very good…Greta got her behind handed to her by Laura Ingram…Newt was enthused…Juan Wms must take a lot of ibuprofen due to all that jerking from common sense to fringe bingeing he does…I think Susan Esteridge should be commended for saying that the Palin smears are unprecedented…
Thanks to the YouTUbe link I got to see Newt hand MSNBC their collective arses. Had I been watching it live would’ve also meant I was talking to ralph and earl due to the nausea caused by the “world’s worst person”…

When Fred speaks, America listens.
I tried network television only to be stuck with McNeil’s pallbearers of doom on PBS, though I did enjoy hearing McCain’s prison inmate “Bud” give his endorsement between speakers with the PBS blond lady journalist. But the three old white men cronies in the studio were awfully disgusting.
Thank God for reliable alternative sources for news.

maverick muse on September 3, 2008 at 8:25 AM
Speaking of Reagan Conservatives, the underground railroad CONTINUES to host travelers leaving the Democrat Party to join ranks with the GOP, even if as Independents.
Following WWII, folks like Ike left the Democrat Party in order to direct the flow of American business prosperity and domestic strength. Reagan would later endorse the same points for American strength, tirelessly promoting international democracy vs. communism.
The GI Bill leveled the economic playing field between the Democrat vs. Republican Parties, as neither has exclusive rights representing either rich or poor Americans. There are as many rich Democrats as Republicans, and as many economically challenged Republicans as Democrats.
Now, when voters transfer from one party to the other it is over IDEOLOGY. That a major ideological Democrat doctrine enforces amputation of wealth from the workers to drones and political swine remains the exclusive bane of the Democrats. That Republicans support education, jobs, energy and production that American businesses accomplish with successful security remains their own exclusive identity.
There is no converting a Nazi in Nazi Germany to leave his party to campaign for an opponent. No one expects to sway ubertards from their brain trench.
But there are a lot of people who don’t care one way or another about things they have no idea about–and a lot of people are uninformed.
maverick muse on September 3, 2008 at 8:53 AM
Uneducated voters need visual aids to realize their choices.
Political ad:
Voter goes car shopping at the Democrat Dealership. The Democrat salesman tells the voter to take a hike (to work, to the store, to the bus that may or may not be there in your town) enforcing good health & green environment via deprivation and forced marches. By the way, though the voter doesn’t get the car, the voter pays for the car he doesn’t get to provide security for the Democrat Dealership.
maverick muse on September 3, 2008 at 8:54 AM
Why is it that everyday, rank and file democrat party member is not being heard from on this unprecedented (Susan Estridge’s words) ATTACK on a mother, her eldest daughter, her youngest son and the her family as a whole?!?!?!?!
Is it because they are cowering from the lunatic fringe, the koskids, the huffpro haters, the Dailey machine incarnate?
Or is it because the democrat party is no longer the rank and file members but, rather the lunatics themselves along with their flying monkey media friends?
Dorothy survived the tornado and so will Governor Sarah Palin.

Fred’s speech about McCain’s trials in Viet Nam caused me to tear up. I have to say that my opinion of McCain couldn’t get much higher, although if he’d just come around on the illegal immigration issue(s), I think I’d feel even better about him.
Geministorm on September 3, 2008 at 9:19 AM
Get over your MDS, the reference to the military was that like the military, McCain put the country first.
You haters…oh my.
And better check your facts, the reason conservative have a majority in the supreme court is because of McCain’s actions.
I could point to many instances of conservative voting for what they thought was a reasonable justice, and the justice turns out to swing to the left.
The reason you can point to McCains mistakes, is that he actually made decisions and has a record.
Here is some news for you…leaders make mistakes…
