GOP convention, night two: Thompson and Lieberman

Here’s your comment thread. 7 p.m. ET on C-SPAN; watch online if you’re not near a TV. Bush will speak via satellite at some point and then it’s Fred plating bleeding chunks of red meat and Joementum reprising Zell Miller — but kinder and gentler! — in primetime.

How intense is public interest in Palin? Judging by online activity, more intense than it’s ever been even for The One. Our heroine’s lying low for now, but if you’re hungry for more, here’s tomorrow’s “scandal” today: HuffPo video of her addressing a Pentecostal church and asking for prayers that the task of U.S. troops be “a task that is from God” and “that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.” NBC has already picked it up and is naturally very, very concerned. Too early to tell yet which stereotype of evangelicals the left will try to demagogue her with, the idea that they want to wage a holy war on Muslims or the idea that they’re trying to bring about the Rapture and the U.S. military is the fastest path to Armageddon. But it sounds to me like all she’s really saying here is that she hopes God approves of what we’re doing, which must be the most rudimentary prayer in all of Christendom. Am I right or has my benighted atheism clouded my judgment once again. Weigh in!

While you mull that, here’s video from CNN of Sally Quinn telling Christians how they’re supposed to feel about a working mom neglecting her kids by going off gallivanting to shop or get her hair done or run for vice president of the United States. Like Andy McCarthy says, it’s downright heartwarming to see the left take such an interest in the Palin children’s well-being after so cruelly ignoring the effect on the Obama girls of having daddy away for such long stretches at a time. (Barney Frank not included!) Exit quotation: “Sarah was a touchdown, but I feel like we’re looking at it on the video replay for a final call.”

Yes Guy, Joe didn’t mean that last line literally.

Me too. He’ll pay a price for this.

Quit being a wuss Joe and just become a Rebpulican. Honestly.

The YES! guy sounds alot like Chris “HA! HA! HA!” Matthews.

ThePrez on September 2, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Maxx, I saw it often, since. It’s still out there. I also read his book and adore him.

Entelechy on September 2, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Joe has one big set of brass ones taking on the party and The One.

SimplyKimberly on September 2, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Olberman is grasping at straws and even admitting he’s “nitpicking”.

CanadianGuy on September 2, 2008 at 11:01 PM

And Lieberman’s party is very very angry and violent. This takes guts! Wow. I’m in awe.

Leiberman’s party is full of cowards and traitors. They dream of violence but don’t have the guts to carry anything out. That’s why they’re going to get trounced again this election.

McC’s definitely not my favorite, but he beats the marxist ‘progresives’ hands down.

There are never any perfect choices. Life just doesn’t work like that, unfortunately.

How can you guys and gals watch that crap? I had to switch from CNN to FNC when the CNN talking heads came back online. Disgusting.

CNN did have a better image and sound though. Too bad their editorialist ‘reporters’ are so in the tank for the marxist ‘progressives’.

Lord.

Please kick Fred off of the panel Brit.

FRED!!! That was AWESOME. Reinforcing again why I supported him so strongly in the primaries. I still say FRED would be a better President, but he certainly made the case for McCain tonight.

Great stuff!

bigred on September 2, 2008 at 11:06 PM

Ok, just listened to Fred! & Liebs. God, if only McCain could deliver a speech like Fred! This would be a dead solid lock.

peski on September 2, 2008 at 11:07 PM

Hell… I can barely stand to listen to the FNC folks. I’ve completely stopped watching all of it for the past couple of months. Gotta admit that I’m MUCH happier and healthier for doing so.

Absitenance works every time it’s tried. ;)

Highly reccommended.

techno_barbarian on September 2, 2008 at 11:07 PM

The Rabbi did good.

The Irving Berlin (Jewish) God Bless America theme also worked well.

FRED!!!!!!!!!!!

ApartforHaShem on September 2, 2008 at 11:07 PM

I watched it on CSPAN so I could just hear the speakers. Fred was epic. Joe was pretty good, but hey, you can’t really expect a lot of conservative red meat from a Democrat.

Newt smacking Obama around is beautiful.

SimplyKimberly on September 2, 2008 at 11:08 PM

Yes and Newt ended by asking the reporter to name one thing that Obama has ever done. The reporter just said “I’m gonna leave it there. I’m not gonna argue the case. Back to you Keith.”

pappy on September 2, 2008 at 11:11 PM

CanadianGuy on September 2, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Karl Rove just called Fred’s speech red meat. Liebs was for the American people and powerful in that way.

akerralls on September 2, 2008 at 11:13 PM

I can’t handle more than a few seconds of MSNBC or CNN, so someone let me know when one of their “analysts” is the first to ask why Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman didn’t directly address the topic of Bristol Palin’s baby, the most important unborn child since the Messiah before the current one. It’s coming up on 11:15 and I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t happen by 11:30.

Doctor Zero on September 2, 2008 at 11:13 PM

On MSNBC, Matthews and Keith O are talking about how the RNC Convention is so centered on the man; McCain, vs a platform or the party. It is interesting in light of the observations last week that none of the speakers at the DNC convention spoke to the character and “core” of Obama. Quite a contrast!! At the DNC convention, there were not any real testimonials for Obama, other than by his wife. Thompson and Lieberman spoke about the good man that McCain is.

Star20 on September 2, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Rove…wow..great analogy. 2 piles of dynamite on the 2 foundations of Obama’s “message”.

peski on September 2, 2008 at 11:09 PM

Good evening peski. Thanks for asking. So far, a masterstroke, from this perspective, for two reasons:

1. The “inexperience/experience” topic is front and center now, having been intentionally hidden by the media and the O-camp so far. I don’t think they did Obama a favor, and will live to regret it.

2. The reaction of the left is all-telling. They know, and they fear. When Sally Quinn ‘worries’ about Mrs. Palin’s children, I know something special is happening, and it’s not to Mrs. Quinn’s liking.

Only my 2 cents. With best regards,

Entelechy on September 2, 2008 at 11:15 PM

Fred! was great! Best speach evah! Lieberman was so-so – nothing like Zel Miller, but I didn’t expect as much. Leiberman still caucuses with the Dems and even called himself a Dem while on stage, instead of an Independent.

Neocon Peg on September 2, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Here we go, for all of you new to the Republican Party. This is what Joe Lieberman was trying to do, but Zell Miller shows us how its actually done.

Maxx on September 2, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Campbell Brown is disappointed with the partisanship and says the recklessness of the Palin pick undermines the arguments of Fred and Lieberman. WTF???

Well, I’m the last one on page 6 of the comments so all I’ve got to say is that Thompsons speech was fantastic, absolutely great. Unfortunately as a Canadian I can’t vote for McCain/Palin…is it legal to contribute to the campaign?

Wolf Blitzer and Campbell Brown questioning his endorsement of Palin and whether you can believe anything he says about John McCain. These people are Dem operatives.

chasdal on September 2, 2008 at 11:02 PM

No no! Lieberman is a DEMOCRAT. You can tell because he started out so negative and saying how bad off people were. He’s not going to ever be a Republican.

To be a Republican you have to be optimistic and think things are pretty good but they can always get better. That is directly opposite of how Dems see things. Lieberman is a Dem in his heart of hearts.

That’s why his taking down Obama is so important. I bet there are a lot more like him that really see Obama as a mistake. He is way too green. They should have left him on the tree to ripen.

I think even oh darn what’s her name first woman vp pick? Ferraro. I think she is leaning this way too. Not because they are Republicans but because they believe in John and think Obama is wrong for the country.

What is going on with Brit Hume’s group?? Were they watching the same speeches I was? I’m sick and tired of that Nina grasping for negative things to say! From the comments I’ve read it sounded like MSNBC gave the night higher marks than Fox. And just so I can get it off my chest- Juan Williams was a smacked ass (again) on Special Report earlier tonite; they need to put Juan and Mort out to pasture.

I don’t see why not. But if you do contribute, you need to do it before McCain accepts the nomination on Thursday, because after that he’s limited to public financing.

ReubenJCogburn on September 2, 2008 at 11:23 PM

John King highlighted this quote from Fred’s speech: It’s pretty clear there are two questions we will never have to ask ourselves, “Who is this man?” and “Can we trust this man with the Presidency?”

CanadianGuy on September 2, 2008 at 11:24 PM

Just saw another one of those stupid al-gore ‘we’ commercials.

I can’t wait for McC to come out and say, “I kept an open mind about the climate change crisis, but having looked at the recent science, it is impossible not to reconsider that position…” And then lay out the science against it and open the eyes of the nation.

Will that happen? Dunno. Probably not. Sure would be a master stroke, though.

techno_barbarian on September 2, 2008 at 11:24 PM

Neocon Peg on September 2, 2008 at 11:20 PM

I believe she was selected for both reasons, Neocon Peg, but it doesn’t bother me.

There’s a third reason which makes me cautiously optimistic about Nov. of this year, the fact that common Americans, men and women, will identify so easily with the Palin family. I mean the ones Obama demeaned when he was speaking to the billionnaires in San Francisco.

Entelechy on September 2, 2008 at 11:24 PM

Is Romney still speaking tomorrow? Did anyone hear. I’ll be sad if he isn’t respected enough for a speaking spot after the hurricane.

petunia on September 2, 2008 at 11:26 PM

Olbermann’s reporter on the floor asked Newt Gingrich if her lack of experience is a concern, to which I just saw Newt Gingrich deliver the most accurate, fluid, flawless destruction of an interviewer in a long, long time. He was so good, as Olbermann came back on the screen, he just had a smile on, knowing that his reporter just got owned to the tenth degree.

I really hope someone tivo’d that moment.

I thought the speeches were good. I really liked Fred’s speech and I always think that Laura Bush is a class act. I was glad Bush was there, even if it was not in person. And I got the impression the audience was glad too.

I really respect Lieberman for doing what he did. It took guts.

I think the panel at Fox is kind of lame anymore. I don’t know why, but they annoy me.

Ha! My favorite too! You just don’t get better than Zel Miller! I got the feeling from Leiberman that he was just doing it as a favor to McCain – not with any real feeling ala Miller, who I think actually believed what he said.

Miller was passionate, he was breathing fire that night. A better performance, I doubt I’ll ever see.
