GOP convention, night two: Thompson and Lieberman

Here’s your comment thread. 7 p.m. ET on C-SPAN; watch online if you’re not near a TV. Bush will speak via satellite at some point and then it’s Fred plating bleeding chunks of red meat and Joementum reprising Zell Miller — but kinder and gentler! — in primetime.

How intense is public interest in Palin? Judging by online activity, more intense than it’s ever been even for The One. Our heroine’s lying low for now, but if you’re hungry for more, here’s tomorrow’s “scandal” today: HuffPo video of her addressing a Pentecostal church and asking for prayers that the task of U.S. troops be “a task that is from God” and “that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.” NBC has already picked it up and is naturally very, very concerned. Too early to tell yet which stereotype of evangelicals the left will try to demagogue her with, the idea that they want to wage a holy war on Muslims or the idea that they’re trying to bring about the Rapture and the U.S. military is the fastest path to Armageddon. But it sounds to me like all she’s really saying here is that she hopes God approves of what we’re doing, which must be the most rudimentary prayer in all of Christendom. Am I right or has my benighted atheism clouded my judgment once again. Weigh in!

While you mull that, here’s video from CNN of Sally Quinn telling Christians how they’re supposed to feel about a working mom neglecting her kids by going off gallivanting to shop or get her hair done or run for vice president of the United States. Like Andy McCarthy says, it’s downright heartwarming to see the left take such an interest in the Palin children’s well-being after so cruelly ignoring the effect on the Obama girls of having daddy away for such long stretches at a time. (Barney Frank not included!) Exit quotation: “Sarah was a touchdown, but I feel like we’re looking at it on the video replay for a final call.”

Funky I have a friend that makes great utube videos and will forward the idea, its a good one. She is already working on the O-bam-a vs U S A chant theme that was suggested here the other day. To see her work search on Miradena at utube.

I’m so glad they are highlighting this about Mrs. McCain.

Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 8:42 PM

wow, what a beautiful young lady

poor Bridget is quite heavy :-( I hope she isn’t in poor health?

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 8:42 PM

don’t flame me…I just hate to see young people carrying so much weight. I hope the crap that weirdos on our own side of the aisle and on the other side (of course) have thrown at Bridget over the years hasn’t hurt her.

Ditto!

I think at least 1/3 of my friends were adopted.

Hey, it’s Mary Richards of Minneapolis!

Tuning Spork on September 2, 2008 at 8:36 PM

Your comment before about her weight doesn’t help.

Let the libs be the ones that are hung up on anyone having even the littlest of fat on them. Let the libs be the one that think fat people are the lowest of the low.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 8:47 PM

Oh good, it’s not a country singer. Remember, GOP, not all conservatives just listen to country. Get Iced Earth to play “When the Eagle Cries”, carn-sarnit!

Personally, I don’t construe “I hope she isn’t in poor health” as an attack.

I was referring to this.

poor Bridget is quite heavy :-(

I don’t think funky meant any offense but it still came off pretty bad.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 8:56 PM

I remember Bridget from 2000. She wasn’t shy/uncomfortable looking then either. She looked like a happy, active little kid back then.

Why do so many evil losers think it’s cool to throw slime on little children? Maybe she has developed arthritis or something else that limits her mobility….barring that, I have to guess people hurt her verbally.

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Good thing the signer is there cuz I can’t understand a word she’s singing.

Tuning Spork on September 2, 2008 at 8:57 PM

I can understand her fine.

Ryan Gandy on September 2, 2008 at 8:58 PM

yeah I won’t say anything else….the difference from 2000 is kinda shocking to me is all.

I’m a mommy, so really, didn’t mean it as a slam on her.

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 8:58 PM

yeah I won’t say anything else….the difference from 2000 is kinda shocking to me is all.

No problem. When you’re a guy who has rather quick metabolism and then hear from your wife break down in tears to the point of wanting to die because she’s on the heavy side, it breaks my heart. I love her so much and get so pissed at the people out there that act like Britney Spears or Jennifer Love Hewitt were ever fat. My wife and I are both on Weight Watchers right now (I do have a gut and I need to eat healtier, but other then that I have a pretty thin frame).

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 9:02 PM

OK, um, probably no great loss to only have 3 nights of this stuff.

Jeez, I’m kinda mean tonight :-) sorry–it reminds me of teacher inservice crap they used to force us to attend. It’s the main reason I gave up on education as a career.

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 9:02 PM

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 9:02 PM

it’s horrifying really. and the thing that gets me is when a beautiful woman like Jessica Alba gets famous and then starves herself into a bobblehead.

Courtney Cox did the same thing. Why/who came up with the idea that skeletal women are the most attractive?

and yes, it’s very, very damaging to women and girls. no question about it.

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 9:05 PM

GHW and Barbara look great.

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 9:06 PM

George H.W. Bush looks so much more frail. That kind of makes me sad.

Slublog on September 2, 2008 at 9:07 PM

I mean, he looks good for his age, but less hearty.

Slublog on September 2, 2008 at 9:07 PM

And Hansen too? Damn.

Never let it be said, by anyone, that Republican conventions are full of women that are either old OR ugly.

Ryan Gandy on September 2, 2008 at 9:08 PM

FYI – Bill O’Reilly just announced that he will be interviewing Obama on Thursday Night – in essence, preempting McCain’s acceptance speech.

Who’s in the tank for Obama?

dugan on September 2, 2008 at 9:08 PM

I just watched Chris Mathews interview Tom Ridge. I laughed out loud. Chris looks deranged. Best thing is that he was asking questions about Governor Palin designed to get the answers he wanted, only Ridge wasn’t delivering. I wonder if Chris Mathews ever watchs his own tapes. They are really funny.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Why/who came up with the idea that skeletal women are the most attractive?

Thin is nice, but forcing the body to be skeletal is horrific – I dont understand that, that makes me cringe. But sometimes the body just has a mind of its own – I’m a guy who cant gain weight no matter what.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Weren’t Obama’s press flacks whining about “political malpractice” when McCain was teasing a release of his running mate on The One’s speech night?

I can’t say I’m surprised by their turnaround on that.

well, there goes my hope that O’Reilly has any of his folks up there looking at those Chicago Annenberg Challenge documents.

Gee, did O’Reilly ask McCain to do an interview last Thursday and McCain turned him down?

Remember–Ted Sampley (purveyor of the John McCain=Manchurian NVA Candidate) also slings slime at GHW Bush.

funky chicken on September 2, 2008 at 9:21 PM

Watched ABC’s coverage of Day 2…

They showed Tom DeLay slinking into a convention fund raising party(with a recap of the charges against him), some senile Republican Congressman head butting the camera and some talk about Palin’s husband belonging to a modern Confederate/secession group in Alaska…

Quite a show!

Please oh please oh PLEASES do a tribute to the man who jumped on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers. I”m kicking myself for not being able to remember his name (I”m terrible with names).

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 2, 2008 at 9:53 PM

I love the upbeat nature of the convention so far, and Mrs. Bush is doing a great job of keeping it up. She talks about “inspiring statistics” and “people living in freedom.” You don’t hear Obama talking about inspiration and freedom, aside from the occasional boast about how inspiring he is. And you sure don’t hear him talking about “keeping Americans safe,” as Mrs. Bush just did. The Dem convention was a funereal for an America that Democrats think lasted 200 years too long. This is a celebration.

Doctor Zero on September 2, 2008 at 9:54 PM

It beats the “Scanners” look from the dems giving speeches due to the teleprompter being in front of them.
