Fred Thompson: The left’s smears of Palin prove that they’re panicking

posted at 1:01 pm on September 2, 2008 by Allahpundit

Yeah, maybe, although I’ll have an easier time believing that after a gangbusters speech tomorrow night. Fred says here that a lot of women identify with her. True?

If McCain’s strategy was to reach out to women voters, however, thus far it hasn’t been successful. The night after the announcement, slightly more women voters viewed Palin as the right choice for McCain’s running mate, but now 41% say she was not, versus 36% who still believe she was a good choice. Forty-one percent (41%) of women say they are less likely now to vote for McCain because of Palin, as opposed to 31% who say they are more likely to support him. Women voters were essentially even on this question in the earlier survey…

[E]ven a plurality of men (47%) say Palin is not ready to be president in the event of the 72-year-old McCain being incapacitated while in the White House, although 32% believe she is ready. Women voters by a nearly two-to-one margin believe Palin is not ready…

Voters overall by a 48% to 29% margin say Palin is not ready yet to be president, a view shared by 74% of Democrats and 48% of unaffiliated voters but only 16% of Republicans.

He told Hemmer earlier in the interview that he’ll be speaking tonight in praise of McCain but they’d be better off using him to sell Palin. Lieberman can take care of pushing Maverick’s maverickiness; Thompson’s presence, fame, conservative cred, and even stereotypical masculinity make him a money choice to bolster an unknown woman candidate’s credibility. Exit question: Which Republicans does he have in mind as being “sore” about the Palin pick? Hmmm.

Update: Actually, maybe Huckabee should introduce her: “I don’t know if you realize this but Sarah Palin got more votes running for mayor in Wasilla Alaska than Joe Biden did in [his] quest for the presidency…”

I dont know if its Mitt’s backers or Hucks but there is an element in the GOP that is doing Obama’s dirty work for him indirectly.

William Amos on September 2, 2008 at 1:05 PM

Fred says here that a lot of women identify with her. True?

Every moose-hunting, icefishing woman I know is behind her 100%.

RedWinged Blackbird on September 2, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Thanks Fred….

I think it is both sets of backers…..

their guys are on board but some are having trouble letting go of “the dream”.

I do.

Topsecretk9 on September 2, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Kay Bailey Hutchinson perhaps??

Illinidiva on September 2, 2008 at 1:06 PM

I think she’s gotten women excited about the ticket, judging by my Bride’s reaction and my Sister’s.

Mr. Bingley on September 2, 2008 at 1:06 PM

So we get Palin and bang ¡FRED! shows up for the party (not that party)!

mad saint jack on September 2, 2008 at 1:07 PM

I swear if I find out that either Mitt or Huck is behind these smears I will actively work to make sure either never has any post in the GOP.

William Amos on September 2, 2008 at 1:07 PM

I was about to say that Fred is such a great spokesman for this campaign.

then I realized I need to add, so has been Mitt and Huck! These boys are doing great!

Illinidiva on September 2, 2008 at 1:06 PM

The Veep’s job is really to help sell the product. While Hutchinson certainly seems competent at what she does there’s nothing exciting about her.

Mr. Bingley on September 2, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Exit question: Which Republicans does he have in mind as being “sore” about the Palin pick?

Every insider. Go over to NRO’s original posts, for example, and look around.

Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Fred says here that a lot of women identify with her. True?

I can only speak for myself and my circle of influence: very TRUE. We most certainly identify with Palin, now more than ever. The double standard applied to her service and her life is abominable, but we’ve all experienced it in our own lives – though certainly not on this level.

My admiration and respect for Sarah Palin increases every day.

Redhead Infidel on September 2, 2008 at 1:11 PM

I agree, Fred should sell Sarah (they both aren’t afraid to tell it like it is) and let Leibs bolster McCain. Quick, Allah, get a post-it note over to the RNC!

Fred sounds drunk. Maybe Nixon was right about Fred not being too bright.

stlpatriot on September 2, 2008 at 1:11 PM

Sarah Palin is Fred Thompson if Fred were better looking and wore skirts. I love them both.

D0WNT0WN on September 2, 2008 at 1:12 PM

The problem here is that the McCain people are getting out-flanked in defining Palin. She’s getting hit with the “not ready to lead” meme because the Democrats have had an open field to run vicious attacks on her all Labor Day weekend with no serious response or forward agenda by the GOP. The fact that we lost our first convention day to Gustav is a problem, too.

In my judgment, 50% of this entire convention needs to be dedicated to selling Palin. And she needs to give the speech to end all speeches on Wednesday night. Any flub-ups, any goofy statements, any verbal tics, ANYTHING, will hurt her severely.

After that, they need to put her out there in interviews and get people seeing her, rather than simply the nonsense the Obama campaign and their media surrogates peddle about her.

Outlander on September 2, 2008 at 1:12 PM

I’ve been saying since Friday I identify with her.

It’s good to see my man Fred.

Anna on September 2, 2008 at 1:13 PM

oh, sorry, illini; you were saying she might be sore about not getting picked; i thought you were suggesting other women he might have chosen. my bad.

Mr. Bingley on September 2, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Fred! is at least partially right — our side’s rather moderate disdain [and glee] over greasy joe is ’cause everyone knows he was the establishment pick and does oblahblah few if any favors.

saracuda opens up whole new worlds for John — hence the immense pressure to disqualify her. After ~72 hrs. of white-hot effort by the smear machine, we have a bruised [but not broken] candidate. I predict her speech wil be as good/better than oblahblah’s was last week, and the narrative that John wants wil be mostly re-established.

Buckaroo on September 2, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Exit question: Which Republicans does he have in mind as being “sore” about the Palin pick? Hmmm.

I can name quite a from this site alone. The buck stops where ?

redrock on September 2, 2008 at 1:13 PM

Fred says here that a lot of women identify with her. True?

I think it’s still too early to tell.

Thompson’s presence, fame, conservative cred, and even stereotypical masculinity make him a money choice to bolster an unknown woman candidate’s credibility.

Absolutely. But also, I’d like to see both themes woven together. And, as wonderful as Palin is, I still don’t like the top ticket guy. Fred could help smooth some of that over (emphasis “could”).

I am a HUGE Mitt fan and honestly couldn’t be happier about the choice of Palin for VP. While I can’t speak for everyone, what I have seen from Mitt supporters is along the same lines as myself. Some people might be disappointed, but they aren’t bitter like some of the other candidates and their supporters.

Every moose-hunting, icefishing woman I know is behind her 100%.

RedWinged Blackbird on September 2, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Geez, are you just saying the women who actually get out and do “sporty” things are the only ones who will vote for her?

I don’t really know what to say about that.

upinak on September 2, 2008 at 1:15 PM

Whether or not McCain chose Sarah to get Hillary voters I can’t say for sure, but I hope that the end result will be that he pulls in independent men and woman. If he gets some Hillary-ites that’s gravy, IMO. Overall, I think the BSD will keep them in BHO’s camp.

Mr_Magoo on September 2, 2008 at 1:15 PM

I would have been just as extatic if Mitt was VP as Palin. But Mitt isnt the VP and wont be the VP and some of his backers need to come to grips with that.

And give this crappy line up. Mitt and Huck are campaigning looking great. People are getting behind this ticket, so let’s let this lame attempt @ division die it’s natural death. There’s no need to play that crap up.

Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 1:18 PM

So far the only spokesman I have heard on TV say without question that Sarah is ready to be POTUS is… Huckabee. Everyone else seems hesitant to commit themselves. They deflect the question with political-speak.

Thanks Huck! Keep saying it!

With all the divided sentiment over whether Palin will be good or bad for the ticket, we need as little division as possible.

Oh, and FRED!

MadisonConservative on September 2, 2008 at 1:20 PM

Why don’t they trot out all the Republican women in office right now? Have them defend her. They want to attack her for being a woman, a mother, inexperienced, unvetted, etc. Get the GOP women in front of the camera. Get them synced talking about how outrageous it is to say that being a mother of five will somehow distract from her duties as VP or as a mother. Get the GOP women fired up! They should be front and center arguing her case, not just the men!

She’ll be fine. Just talking to my circle of friends (most of whom are extremely apolitical) and it’s clear that this media mud-slinging is having the OPPOSITE effect. Everyday folks (i.e. the one take time off work to vote) are saying “…why is CNN talking about her daughter?”.

The media’s pathetic attempt to “journalise” the story by talking about overburdened responsibilities, etc is falling on deaf ears.

One of my all-time favorite quotes (by a US general during Katrina in 2005) is still “…the American people are not stuck on stupid”.

Keep it up MSM, and especially the Obama camp’s minions and sleeze merchants. It’s all money in the RNC bank and additional votes from independants over to McCain…one at a time.

Yeah, I especially liked Richard Brookhiser, who said that “conservatives liked her because she had a Down Syndrome baby and an M-16.” And that if that was the base of the Republican Party, maybe we/they (take your pick) needed “a different base.”

Illinidiva on September 2, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Fred brought up an interesting point that may have been mentioned already above, there is some upset among the media elite because they weren’t included in the decision making and new who the VP pick was at the same time as everyone else. So they’re bitter they weren’t allowed to be the elite by having first-hand knowledge. Some of their bitterness is being reflected in the coverage of Palin. They can’t help themselves.

Weebork on September 2, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Apparently its not Huck

Over the past few days we’ve been hearing all this stuff about how Gov. Palin doesn’t have experience let me tell you something I can assure having been a governor myself for ten and a half years, she’s had more executive experience in 2 years than her counterpart Joe Biden has had in all the years that he’s been making speeches because she’s been making decisions he’s been making just simple speeches,” Huckabee told the crowd.

The American Spectator has this up today in Storm Center:

GLOVES OFF
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney may be putting on a brave face for the cameras after losing out to Gov. Sarah Palin for the veepship, but his ever-loyal cadre of aides and consultants and conservative media types continue to work for him.

Almost every critical remark made about Palin on a recent briefing call about her selection came from political consultants with ties to Romney. Those comments were planted, says one, because they knew that reporters would be on the call.

Same here, William. My neighbor,”Bubba”, despises McCain and said he wouldn’t vote at all if he didn’t choose Mitt as his running mate. We had some discussions that nearly turned into screaming matches because I can’t imagine handing this election to BO out of stubbornness.

“Bubba” arrived home from a trip, and we had a chat about Palin. He hadn’t heard much. Last time I saw him he was carrying on about how fantastic she is, and he can’t get over how attractive she is. Of course, this is anecdotal, but I’m hearing only positive buzz about her where I live.

As for the angry Repubs, I’m sure they’re out there. As I noted in a post the other day the initial reaction on several conservative websites was not only unflattering but dripping with condescension and blatant chauvinism.

All I can say is screw ‘em.

1. Uhh, no. Neither side is panicking.

2. One party talking about the other party being guilty of double standards is beyond ridiculous.

3. Both sides are just doing exactly what they both do very well: practice petty gotcha politics and toss never-ending double standards and hypocrisy onto the table. Meanwhile the issues get lost somewhere in limboland while everybody blathers on and on about a teen pregnancy or a poor long lost brother living in squalor in Africa.

The bar keeps lowering and both sides are the ones lowering it. So Thompson can take his little indignation over the whole Palin thing and shove it.

Dr Evil on September 2, 2008 at 1:33 PM

It’s interesting to compare the 2000+ thread of last Friday when the nomination news came through (called “…near hysterical by even righty blogs) to the simmering panic that seems to have set it.

I say again…she will be fine. There’s no point in circle-jerking this thing until her speech on Wednesday or else every stutter or pause is going to be met with groans and heart attacks by our own side.

I never thought I would use this analogy, but let’s take a cue from the Obamaniacs, defend our side to absurdity (well, maybe not that far) and refuse to pick at the scabs. After all, if they can keep focused with a guy like Obama, can’t we all just get along…sorry….can’t we just drop the angst and focus our energies into suggestion like what her speech should say, etc?

Waterboy on September 2, 2008 at 1:33 PM

It was well known within two weeks of Dan Quayle’s selection by George Bush in 1988 that James Baker was fanning the flames with the media about Quayle being a poor choice. Baker was deliberately left out of the loop in the VP selection because Bush did not trust him not to leak the choice all over the place beforehand. Baker got spooked at the first piece of bad news about Quayle’s draft avoidance, and immediately worked to distance himself from the pick and undermine it.

Baker was a dirty coward, and so are some of these Republican insiders today. My guess is there are a couple of veteran leakers in the McCain camp who were left out of the loop, just like Baker was, and they are pissed off and getting their revenge by fanning the flames.

rockmom on September 2, 2008 at 1:34 PM

I relate to Sarah Palin because, like her, I have achieved what I have based on my own hard work. No handouts. This is why, as a woman, I am enthused about her selection. Candidly, I don’t want the girl or boy next door to be my President. I think the job is too important for that. I don’t really care that she can cure a moose (although I presume BO can raise one from the dead).

Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 1:36 PM

It is probably true that “no one” is qualified to be president when they get the job. That being said, Palin appears better qualified than Obama or Biden. This is the source of all the left wing gutter politics. They are scared of her (and with good reason).

duff65 on September 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Fred brought up an interesting point that may have been mentioned already above, there is some upset among the media elite because they weren’t included in the decision making and new who the VP pick was at the same time as everyone else. So they’re bitter they weren’t allowed to be the elite by having first-hand knowledge. Some of their bitterness is being reflected in the coverage of Palin. They can’t help themselves.

Weebork on September 2, 2008 at 1:24 PM

Notice how evenhanded Fox news has been in its coverage. Fox got the scoop on the pick. Coincidence?

rockmom on September 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Based on the initial reaction by the boys at Power Line to the news of Palin’s selection, I would guess that Tim Pawlenty was more than a little put off by the choice.

Jim M. on September 2, 2008 at 1:37 PM

William Amos,

I neither think Mitt or Huckabee are doing anything behind the scenes to ruin Sarah Palin. It’s just not in Mitt’s character to do stuff underhanded and Huckabee is thrilled over Palin’s family values and Pro-Life stance. (No offense to Huckabee, but my impression of his campaign was nearly single issue over abortion.)

As to the rabble rousers who have taken criticism to Palin down to the level of the DailyKos by perpetuating the absolutely phooney-baloney nonsense over Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy, I don’t think they were either Mitt or Huckabee supporters at all. They were never their supporters. They were simply people who find it necessary to use a particular candidate or conservative position to snipe from. Their only interest is to piss actual conservatives and supporters of candidates off.

They’re, for the most part, trolls. They hide behind a vale of reasonableness, when in fact, they are just plain full of themselves. They bait you by appearing to seem to have reasonable arguments, but they’re just wrong. It is only to reel you in to a never-ending argument. They have you now, and all they have to do is keep you going until you give up completely and utterly frustrated. You try to be reasonable, but that is the trap.

The only way to win is to not play the game. You can stop at any time.

Spirit of 1776 on September 2, 2008 at 1:39 PM

No matter how you spin it….Palin is being ravaged by forces so evil that the truth be damned. This attack on a woman running for office could be the most vicious in history. What is the source of these unwarranted attacks, the LEFT. Who owns the democrats….the LEFT. Think about it, ladies. Do you think when they used racial hatred and sexism to bury Hillary that it was over? It was only the beginning. The only way the left will allow a woman to ever be elected is for her to be a bigger whore than the men she is running against. Palin is not that woman.

That wouldn’t surprise me at all. The PL guys were awful, so awful in fact that I e-mailed them. They got a huge blowback from other readers in their forums.

A lot of Rep elites are just like Dem elites. They loathe those of us who didn’t graduate from Ivy League schools, inhabit flyover country and are real conservatives.

Like McCain railing at all of us after the defeat of his shamnesty bill last year, they just want us all to shut up, pay taxes and do what we’re told – no questions asked.

The left have been trying to capitalize on the Palin revelations but so far they are failing . . . even old hatchet face Mitchell on MSNBC is floundering. Keep it up Dems and it won’t be long before you enrage every family in the country.

Does anyone have links to Palin’s speeches during, for example, during her campaigns for Mayor and Gov? You can bet she’s heard all the “beauty queen” “trailer trash” and Ma and Pa Kettle comments and has a ready salvo for Wednesday night.

What do folks think? What’s her message for Wednesday:

1. McCain is our guy
2. This is my story
3. Why Obama (and Biden) are complete tools
4. We’re gonna be at war within 12 months, I can feel it, so who’s it gonna be, huh?
5. (Any combination of the above)

Courage and standing up to leadership, Palin.

Fred put it well. This is a McCain decision taking everything into consideration; McCain chose what’s best for himself in his presidency.

Naturally, a minority might have a superiority complex of their own. Whether camouflaged or overt, harpies and misogynists live for an opportunity to ridicule or judge pregnancy as though they gain power from that. So deal with yourselves. If you must practice sabotage, apply it to the opposition. When push comes to shove, if you want to fight Obama, do so. As Tony Soprano put it, “don’t sh*t where you eat; and especially don’t sh*t where I eat.”

Kay Bailey Hutchinson perhaps??

The Veep’s job is really to help sell the product. While Hutchinson certainly seems competent at what she does there’s nothing exciting about her.

Mr. Bingley on September 2, 2008 at 1:10 PM

OT,  but Kay Bailey is nothing more than a Pol who loves pork.   A conservative reformer Kay Bailey is _not_!   There’s talk (rumors I’ve read) that Kay Bailey may run for Texas Governor?   Not sure how that’s going to wash out here in Texas?
