Fiorina presser: Democrats for McCain

Earlier today, I attended a press conference held by Carly Fiorina to introduce the Citizens for McCain Coalition, a group of Democrats and independents who plan to vote for John McCain in November. Six prominent Democrats joined Fiorina for the conference, including a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, two elected Democrats, and a former Clinton-era ambassador to OPEC. One by one, they explained how the campaign of Barack Obama disillusioned them and drove them to support McCain.

  • Ambassador Mark Erwin
  • John Coale, former fundraiser for both Clintons
  • Silver Salazar, Hispanic community leader in Colorado
  • Brian Golden, former state representative from Boston and an Iraq War veteran
  • Jennifer Lee, a Hillary Clinton campaign worker from California
  • Cynthia Ruccia, women’s rights activist and former Congressional candidate from Ohio.

This was an interesting concept, and it certainly could help the McCain campaign with centrists and independents, but the reasons these people have crossed the aisle won’t necessarily thrilll the base.  Most of them talked about the untested nature of Barack Obama, and how unhappy Coale, Lee, and Ruccia were specifically about the sexism of the Obama campaign and the Democrats in general.

While those topics won’t give the base any problems at all, the rest of the reasons might.  Most of them praised McCain’s moderation, and one or two specifically mentioned immigration as a reason. On the other hand, Ambassador Erwin gave a great response to my question at the end about foreign policy and how Obama is hopelessly naive.  It’ll make a great soundbite.

I’ll have all of the video posted as soon as I can find a reliable Internet connection to do the upload.  It may be later this evening, as the wireless has suddenly started grinding to a halt.

Update: Well, I’ve got Part 1 loaded:

Hey “base?” You’ll still take their votes, right?

Nice Post. BTW, did anyone else notice that CSPAN was running video of a Ron Paul event all day long? Did they spend that much time on Dem fringe groups during their convention?

This is a powerful PR angle. We need to sustain it.

I think the base is solid at this point, especially compared to Obama. This just feeds into the image that Obama and the Democrats aren’t solid and there is a serious rift there that we should put a wedge in and slam it into a rift that is unrepairable.

Offtopic: This interview will set AP on a roller coaster…

McCain’s openness and friendliness to Hillary is why he has a chance to pick up lots of votes from her supporters. He needs those votes to win the election. I’m still confused that this is such a difficult concept for some people to grasp.

Heh.

She is what McCain would like to be: She really is a maverick. In two years she stuck it to the two largest oil corporations in the United States of America. That’s pretty fucking impressive, you know, that she has antagonized her party to the point that they despise her. And her ratings are still in the 80s.

McCain has been a lot of Democrats’ favorite Republican for a long time, at least since 2000. It’s a favorite fable on the Left that McCain lost the 2000 GOP nomination only because the evil BushRove machine smeared him as the father of a black child.

OT: Watching Glenn Beck play clips of Biden, Reed and yes Olby saying the surge won’t work and the war is lost. Now Jonah Goldberg is discussing all the times Biden’s foreign policy has been wrong.

Got to love The Beck!

spacekicker on September 2, 2008 at 7:15 PM

Yeah the GOP base of real Republicans should be really happy and unified that Democrats are voting for McCain because of his part in the plot to force the nation into an ill-advised amnesty scheme.

rockmom on September 2, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Right up there with the myth that McCain is a conservative Republican. At least somebody got through to McCain and convinced him to stop making that utterly false claim.

This is an object lesson that shows where the power really is: with the people. As apathetic as our political process seems, from time to time little rays of democracy like this appear and strike most pols absolutely mute. They know she does not care what happens to them as a party. But they can’t complain without exposing their self-interests. So they shut up, or flip-flop to ride (in this case) her coat-tails.

Orville Redenbacher, you are a genius.

Could anybody have imagined a week ago that we’d be saying this right now?

Seriously, as long as Palin stays true, I could give two squats about the “Maverick’s” centricrist proclivities.

I just keep repeating to myself: “Only four more years; Only four more years…”

And there it is! The STFU and vote McCain because he isn’t Obama crap. Now tinged with the “We put Palin on the ticket to appease you- what else do you ungrateful bastards want to stop questioning McCain’s motives?”

highhopes on September 2, 2008 at 9:16 PM

What, no WalMart greeters?

When are the promised “leading” Democrats for McCain going to reveal themselves?

alphie on September 2, 2008 at 9:19 PM

WTF is Carly Fiorina doing as a McCain official? This woman has been a FAIL in every CEO job she had, driving Lucent to bankruptcy and then nearly ruining Hewlett-Packard. She’s living proof that women can be like other CEO’s, once in the club, you get rewarded for your failures with golden parachutes and even BETTER jobs?

Last I saw she was working for the UN, an appropriate place for her. Hope she doesn’t end up in any important job in the McCain administration. I’m not impressed at all with the people McCain surrounds himself with, which is why I was SHOCKED that Palin was selected.

wildcat84 on September 2, 2008 at 9:20 PM

the dudesblog: Well at least last night C-SPAN did run coverage of the anti-war rally there in St. Paul. I watched for awhile, and I can tell you that amore comical group of losers would be hard to find. The one that really cracked me up was the woman who was head of Welfare Rights(what that has to do with the war is beyond me, but whatever…)

She was complaining about starving people in America and food bank shortages. She herself is morbidly obese.

Hannibal Smith on September 2, 2008 at 7:13 PM

They want McCain under the “least worst” theory and in many ways so do I. Maybe for no other reason than to provide some kind of checks and balances in our government. Dems control congress already and I know that absolute power corrupts absolutely. I think this must be the reason I find myself voting for the same candidate as these people. The answer is yes, we’ll take their votes, we need every vote we can get!

Dollayo on September 3, 2008 at 12:04 AM

spacekicker on September 2, 2008 at 7:15 PM

According to the new gallup poll, Obama has the support of 81% of Hillary’s backers with 65% of saying with certainty that they will vote for him versus 16% who would vote for McCain. I think his base is solid enough and there isn’t going to be any mass defects to McCain’s side. The whole PUMA angle was overplayed by the MSM looking for drama.

Ric on September 3, 2008 at 12:41 AM

These democrats remind me of who the democrats were, before George Soros took over their party.

Kini on September 3, 2008 at 2:26 AM

The Dem party has been hijacked and stretched far left, we know this. We also know the more fringe the left becomes, the more the common values, the traditional American values, are left behind for freakish causes carried out in the most un-American of ways for all to see and hear. Palin therefore becomes that little beacon of light for those who still hold out hope for a return to normalcy and the stuff that is real and tangible. A real person of light, but a light that originates from the inside out, not from DC down to the masses.
